are human players alowed to use a dry erase board to communicate with the coach of the drivers?
Personally, I wouldn't recomend it. I think that sound waves travel faster than the eye registers the markings on a white board :)

Actually if your team was on the far end and your human player sees something that the coach or driver doesn't, chances are that your human player couldn't communicate with the rest of the drive team without something like a dry erase board.

hand signals and yelling is what we are going to use. :o

It would not really matter, unless you had another plan behind it.
I wonder...

If you do use a marker board, be sure to use one that's bright green. :D But seriously, I think it could be a good way to communicate. There could be a lot of noise so a marker board could be the way to go.

Something to keep in mind is that your human player can't move off his pad to make his erase board viewable to the drive team. Maybe they can't see him for some reason, but he can't move to let them. Otherwise, robot dies, and the problem gets bigger.
Realistically speaking, would you really halt your progress to write on a dry erase baord? I support Brad's idea. Having a practiced and simple set of gestures on the field could definitly benefit you.
Good luck everyone :)

Correct me if I'm wrong...
I thought I saw somewhere (possibly a Q/A) that the coach is allowed to "roam free" within the driver stations. That is, they can move back and forth to communicate with the other coaches on the alliance.
(Thank God... Coaching is enough of a nightmare this year.)
Though it isn't very practical, couldn't the coach zip on down to the end of the alliance, and have a nice little chat with the HP?
My drivers can manage themselves for a few seconds.
They don't ALWAYS need a baby-sitter.
Beyond that, our only Human Player test this year was "how loud can you shout: HEY JOHN!!!". ;)

If they cant see a dry erase board, how could they see a hand signal?
I think that the human player can probably only communicate to and from the loading zone...

Q:Due to the fact that there are three separate player stations, is it possible that the COACHES can travel from station to station to allow the outer two stations to communicate?
A:Yes.
Yay, that will help alot.

"Send More Tetram" a little spelling mistake? or a little bleed through from Latin?
ChrisH
I would not suggest using a dry erase board, not only is it unclarified by FIRST at this point, but the amount of room you have to move is going to be drastically reduced if you have dry erase boards and markers for each human player. Plus it will save time just having a "runner" coach talking to the others if need be.
P.S.~ Dave i think we should ask Brandon to put in a spell check for semaphore flag signals because you want us to "Send more Tetram".

Here is a question for everyone, what exactly needs to be said to the human player? Umm put the tetra on the robot. How much more complicated is it?

They need to be the person who can stay calm and not jump up and down when something goes right/wrong in the match. They have to be fast in loading and returning to the pad, also fast in communicating to the drivers and coaches.

...assuming that the first symbol is an "I". i'd say that warning the human player as to when you will be getting up to the loading station (in the event that their view is obstructed by a ref/robot/other human player) and where to place the tetra on the 'bot, since some teams could have multiple places to hold a tetra.
by the by dave, is there a chance that i could get in on this cookie deal too ? ;)

lots of things. like, "the robot is coming your way", or "the robot is driving by the human loading zone but we arn't going to stop so don't move" or "load a tetra on arm A"( if you have multiple arms) or "get ready to make lots of tetra trips back and forth" or even "the robots about to tip over from our crazy driver so get off the pad and stop the beast before we fall flat on our face(!)"

Ok so wouldn't it be easy to have a hand signal system?
For example.
Thumbs up- robot is coming
Thumbs down- robot isn't coming into station.
1- position one
2- position two
And so on, and a verbal to keep the Hp on the pressure pad and not jumping up and down during a match.

As it stands now, we don't expect our HP to do much other than stand on the pad, but he/she will be expected to continuously watch our robot and be prepared to run and load a tetra if we stop in the loading station. We may use a "roving coach" to warn HP's that a robot is coming, but probably not. My biggest concern is the possibility of collision between human players if two robots of an alliance go to the loading stations at the same time. Then, there is the possibility of HP's returning to the wrong pad. That would not be good.

I have an idea.
Let's all have our human players train on adding up the scores. The HP on the right scores one alliance, the one on the left scores the other alliance and the one in the middle signals which alliance is in the lead by pointing to that alliance's player station.
That should keep them awake.

WHAT ARE WE SIGNALING ABOUT AGAIN?
That would take about a quarter of the match to ask. Your human player had better be able to remember things if he wants to get anything done. :)

An excellent idea! Given the number of things to track during this years game, that would help offload some of the tasks from the coach a little bit.

Having gone through the routine of placing 3 tetras onto our robot the entire time at the UTC Scrimmage I found that the communication between the human players and the driver and/or operators to be very minimal. It is good stradegy by the team to tell teh human player when to load before the match. Yes some circumstances might require the raising of voices if a plan has failed. But usually for our team it was from our coach at our driver and operator to try and stack on a different goal. In our case whenever the robot was in the zone, I was loading so for me it was easy. The better the human player, in my opinion, the less yelling that has to go on from the coach unless you do something wrong. Good luck to all and I hope to see you in Atlanta

The human player can do a lot more than just place tetra's. He can be another set of eyes for the drivers/coaches and possibly see things that they potentially cant. Being that my team is going mainly for the autoloader, this is going to be our human players main role. To keep the drivers/coach informed about important things going on the opposite side of the field...well I think thats how its going to go! haha Ill tell you after our first comp. next weekend

At Sacramento, at least one human player did not place his tetra but carried it back to the pad or dropped it and fled. Reason: robot not in loading zone. One human actually went on hands and knees to check the robot's position before he placed the tetra, which saved the team a penalty.
