FREE HUGS?? i LOVE free hugs,
at the nats last year, some guy had this thing flashing around
that said 'free hugs' and i ran up to him though a crowd,
pulled at his sleeve (me being short) like a little kid and said
'i want a hug!' and he gave me one!!
my fondest memories of a FIRST social
... but i still don't know who that guy was

I should do that at Nationals! Just look for the guy w/ a robocards team 5 jersey on, and with a sign saying "hugs for free, with a 1 $ donation" (j/p, i'll wear the jersey and sign saying "Free Hugs" though)

My fav I got last year from the Space Coast Team (233 I think), it said "Real Men Wear Pink". I was wearing it again this year (sadly I didn't get many new pins this year because I had my head stuck inside our bot for 2 days).

How about all those Glow Sticks given out at the GLR? ;)

Yeah.. I was wondering where you got that button from.. couldn't find it anywhere.

And about you having your head stuck in the robot for two days.. sorry about that.. lol, some of it was our fault. But we still love ya, you guys should have been picked for the tournament!

LoL.. this thread has deviated from its subject.. again. Eh, who cares?

Harrison

Nah, the part that your guys did damage too we replaced in favour of a stronger part. It was drill trannys blowing up that kept my attention (yay for crappy couplers).

But hey, damage or not, we were pushing the B.E.A.S.T. around (sry, just had to get that in...lol)

As for the subject......This is Delphi, are we are on topic for more than 2 replys? I think not!

Those things from CD was one of the best light-producing ones I got.

Us running out of them is because I had a very short limited supply, sorry about that. Hopefully PR people will get more by Nat's. I was gonna wear them like I did at a few inventationals...by putting them on the lenses of my glasses (it got a lot of looks...;)). You should've got a limited edition button, they are really cool IMHO [please note: I'm a firster in robotics]

this question has allready been asked probably, im just too lazy to find out, what is with the whole "im gonna be at this place and i have to ask someone out" mentality? i just confuses me...

purpledaisy
31-03-2003, 22:33
There's no mentality that you have to ask someone out - pick up lines can be a good conversation starter, even if you're just looking for a friend. It's (usually) a safe way to get a laugh and a better way to get someone to notice you than sending your friend, even if you don't want to get romantically involved. I don't think any of us really expect to find the person of our dreams and ask them out using a pick up line, we're (I think) just having fun.

Harrison
31-03-2003, 23:00
I didn't mean it as a pick-up line, but at the Canadian i started a conversation with an american girl by saying to her: "Say About".

Boy did I get an odd look...

Its realy hard to get up the guts to ask a girl out, or to strike up conversation, but to u more experienced people, does it get easier to hook up with ppl after youve done it once?

I don't thinks so, I mean, it's your frame of mind that has to
change over time.
You could feel different things for different people
so as long as you are comfortable with your self
and that's about it.
I guess it can get easier because you will see that
it's not that bad (hard of a thing or major),
but it also depends on how intense the feeling you have is.

To me, personally, it's all fun and games,
I'm not shy about it,
if I like a guy I tell him,
I don't expect anything in return,
or I don't tell him, doesn't matter
I like friends - and usually the guys i tell
are just like 'o, OK, cool' and that's that.
and I'll have some guy tell me that
he has a crush on me, and i'd
be like 'o, OK, cool,' and he would still feel
comfortable in calling me up and
tell me about some girl he's in love with
(yes, this is true, is happening with 2 guys right now)
and that's what rocks, you can say 'i like you'
and not feel weird.

You can't try to rush things sometimes --
if they know how you feel,
that's cool, maybe something will happen,
maybe not.

but that could just be me.
sometimes I'm a little too laid back and oblivious for my own good;) :D :p

when a girl flat out asks you if you like them, is that their way of saying they like you?

I don't know what everyone else thinks but..

Well, it usually depends on the girl...but most likely, yeah...it's our way of telling u that we like u. :)

4 me though, I'll usually say something some what directly... :p

Kevin A
01-04-2003, 22:51
Yea, i would rather be told flat out. Today somebody came up to me and asked me if i liked them...i told the truth and said no. Would I have treated her differently/the situation differently if she had said she liked me? I dont know, and i dont know how i would have reacted. She doesnt know how i would i have reacted, which is probably why she didnt ask me. All i have to say is im not out there to hurt anybody.

ok, here is my next stupid question about dating and the comps, where the heck would u go out on the date? or would u just do things together, ugh, i feel so stupid...

Johca_Gaorl
02-04-2003, 12:18
At a comp? You can't really go on a date unless you are both out of high school, cause then you don't have to obey school rules of staying in the comp area. I'd say just hang out with each other, if you are in the same hotel, that's cool too.

sorry if I'm changing the subject a little. But during the nyc regional a guy from team 549 came up to one of the only girls on my team and proceeded to tell her that he and his team thought she was the hottest girl at the competition. I looked inside and saw his whole team lined up against the wall out of the girls site, and all of them were peeking anxiously at the girl.
Funniest thing I saw all competition.

As for dating at a competition, that's a no-no with FORD teams...it's in the rule book...:)...and I'm sure a lot of teams are in compliance with their school rules...

IMO cheering in the stands is the best way to meet and get to know people. When you share the same cheering section as another team, you get to know them pretty well:)

purpledaisy
02-04-2003, 22:12
Well, as I'm one of those people who comes home from a competition with several new friends' email addresses, let me just say this - just go up and talk to the person. you don't have to be a slacker to meet new people, you just need to have a robot/team that doesn't keep you busy in the pit 24/7. That can mean being a scout, being a "cheerleader" in the stands, whatever. Most of the time, just go up and say hi, if you're nervous about being rejected, bring a friend - that way if they're a jerk, you can laugh at them as you and your friend walk away. Most FIRSTers are pretty nice to people if you don't try to pull them away from the robot or a strategy session or something. Or, another one, look for the person sitting alone in the dining area, and ask if they mind if you join them. Usually, at least this is how I am, if they're sitting alone, they're either exhausted to the point of not being able to support rational thought, or hoping someone will come and talk to them.

codeoftherobot
03-04-2003, 00:09
The only time I'm able to get out of the pit is when I am at lunch. I occasionally meet some of the scouts and talk with them but I'm coordinating our pit area so I am really busy (you do this, you do that, DON'T BOTHER ME!). Most of the scouts that I meet are really nice and I make quick friends with them.

Melissa H.
03-04-2003, 00:25
Scouting, I think, is the best way to meet people...also, during a match, cheering with an alliance works.

Is this off topic? I have that habit of going off topic...:p

Be weary of that. I speak from experience, even if you are within the "Rules of Co-habitiation" as my Model UN peeps would put it, people tend to get the wrong idea if you're hanging out with a member of the opposite sex in a hotel. Even if you're just watching a movie or playing cards, or something else innocent, people tend to talk, which can be disastrous to one's reputation (especially if her roommates come looking for her, and your teammates happen to walk by as all four of them leave your room)

Jeff Waegelin
03-04-2003, 16:24
Eh.... what's wrong with spending time in someone else's room? I did it all the time at both regionals.... though I suppose I did get a few weird looks, our team is pretty liberal as far as that goes. Generally, if the people in the room let you in, and there's more than just the two of you, it's okay with us. We watch movies, play cards, and talk all the time with members of the opposite sex. It's no big deal.

Umm, drd, hate to throw the damper on the plan, but I know our coaches better than you do, they won't let you visit other hotels after hours, most likely. It's not like Disney, where they're back to back. If we're in the same hotel (and we're staying at the Radisson), sure, hang out! It's a blast! But I doubt you'll be allowed to go to someone else's hotel.

Getting back to pick-up lines and funny stories ...

This year, at the Midwest Regional, one of the guys on our team was scoping out a girl on team 829. He asked one of the girls on my team to go over to her and get him a button. So, the girl on my team went over to the 829 girl and said, "Umm ... could you do me a favor? See the guy over there with the big curly hair, sitting above the guy in the red hat? Well, he'd really like it if you went over there and gave him a button! Please? I just want to see his reaction!" So she did. His face turned *bright* red. Heeheehee ...

Then there were the guys in the pit next to us, who came up to ChellyZee93 and I and asked, "Can we take your picture? Please?" So we let them. Chelly left, and about ten minutes later the guys came back. One of them asked me, "Hey, can you take a picture with my friend here?" The friend was like, "Wha - huh?? Uh ... Um ..." Hmm ... I wonder how the pictures turned out! :)

I wish I were kidding.

Then there was the guy from 87 who tried to tell me I'd gotten drunk and we'd flown to LA and been married by Elvis... he came back later and told me he wanted a divorce because I was so mean to him... since I didn't agree to the marriage, I had no problem agreeing to the divorce...

so i'm walking around the corner to my pit and this guy comes up to me and says hi. so i say hi back b/c i like to be friendly to other teams and he pulls this bulldog out of a plastic bag and asks me if i want to buy it. now i'm really busy so i'm trying to get rid of him nicely and say no thank you and continue on to my pit but he won't leave me alone. so i ask him how much? he says 10$ and i say, no thanks, that's going to pay for my dinner tonite. his response: well you can buy the bulldog and i'll buy you dinner tonite...at that point i was like, umm....no......thank you........gotta jet!

you don't have to worry about looking smooth,
people need more good friends then anything else.

But last August I met this guy at the fair, and he had bought a chess set, so we were playing chess. He was beating me soo badly...and I was like "on man, I suck at this game" and he was like "it's all right. We still love you" So I said, "We? Who's we?" And he responded, "Would you rather I said 'I'?"

He got me involved in robotics. We've been together for 7 months now. :]

this happened last week at nationals. two girls from my team and i were on our bus with some guys from another team. i forget which team, they had dark blue shirts and one guy was named tom or something. the friends i was with both worked on controls, and these two guys started talking. one was talking about how to use huge capacitors to shrink coins and stuff. dumb things he'd done with electrical circuts. then the other guy starts talking to christina about computers. so the electricity guy is feeling threatened or something, so he goes, "yeah, that's his wet dream, to find a girl he can talk to about computers." and the computer guy replies, "but you were just talking about electricity!" and they start bickering and start a silly little catfight between them, to establish alpha male superiority or something. then my friends who are both in martial arts (as well as me) start beating up on each other too, just to join in because they like to fight. it was kind of surreal.

however, i have never been hit on. guys tend to ignore me. (sigh) there was a hot guy who was at the cleveland regional and at nationals from that team that had the yellow jersey-style shirts. his name is michael and he's really hot and he hung around with a mohawked kid. he was giving out free hugs and i got three. if anyone knows which team that is, tell me please! he's really hot!

ok here's one:

him: excuse me, are you a model?
me: No.
him: No? well can i get your autograph anyway?
me: No. (said while laughing slightly)
him: how about your phone number instead then?

his attempt was kinda cute... unfortunately he wasn't. I ended up not giving him my number. I think it would have been a lot more productive for him if he had just asked me for my number instead of using that terrible line. I may have given it to him.

Next year, I think I should compile a list of pickup lines and then test them out at competitions to see which ones are the most successful.

This other girl on my team, Jen, and I accidently scared a guy at the Canadian regional when we tried to have a conversation with him .. haha. He seemed really fearful of why we were randomly talking to him.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic... but

I met this girl at the pool @ the Raddison... she was really cool we talked for awhile but I had to go so she said we would talk @ the competiton the next day. Well long story short I didnt have anytime to go scouting people out and find her. I dont know what team she was on but I know she had to wear a "Cat-like" mascot costume and I think her name MIGHT have been Heather. If anyone knows who this is please let me know.

THANKS!

BTW- She was wearing Glasses

If she was a driver in a cat-like mascot costume, she was proboly one of the two from team 57. We played a lotta matches with this team and hung out with them over in the staging field. I don't know their names, but team 57 had three cat-like costume people in the drive box, two girls, one guy. Hope this helps ya!

Btw...
If you've been hit on disrespectfully by a 108 member, PLEASE let either me or Mark Hamilton know, we will be more than glad to beat said person for you. All we need is a short description of the person and their actions. From that, we'll make sure that justice is served for you. Again, the views of some of our team members do not reflect the views of our team, heh.

After reading a lot of those pages, but not all of them, I have one thing to say...

dlavery- If you would of tried any of those pickup lines that "didn't work" on me, I probably would of hung out with you the whole competition. I am more in personality then looks ( then again, I know a lot of the HeatWave people and they are Hott (jared) but we won't get into that ) But yea a sense of Humor is always a nice thing to find in a guy, then again just someone saying "Hi" is nice, lol.

AT Regionals, it was to my knowledge and confirmed by my friend in Auto at school, that a girl who actually works on a bot and has grease all over her and doesn't care is ard ot come by, so needless to say I ended up meeting a lot of people at Regionals, and even more at Nat's.

But some funny pick-up lines I have experienced is infact from a mentor for one of his students....whom I will keep nameless:
"Hi, are you Megan?"
"Yes..."
"Question, do you know ::insert name here:: over here?"
"I am not sure, I cant see him, I am near-sighted"
"Well, he is hiding behind the crate, but he was wondering if you would sit next to him on rides at 6 Flags tonight"
Sure enough the team paid my entry fair...o.O

And..."Hi, can I have your number" to which I reply "Sure ::Writes team number on te arm::" I ended up being good friends with the guy now...haha. Then again that was pretty funny too...

Also poor 701 believe it was, my "pick-up line" I guess you woudl call it, was some guy told me to do a trck for him at Nat's, in order to get JElly Beans, and I drew a picture onhis hand, by the end of the day, I think I drew 50 pictures on guys hands, if you call those pick up lines, lol. and no Heatwave, they weren't pick-up lines on you, pfft!

But in conclusion dlavery you rock!

FUNNY STORY TIME!
so i was in 6 flags friday night, walking around with my teammate kharnicia. some boys have the misconception that girls like to have their attention caught by PPST! HEY YO! YOU! GIRL IN THE PINK SHIRT! (this is very wrong. please don't do that.) so i tried ignoring them, but nece wasn't catching on, so she pointed them out and i HAD to turn around and talk to them. I tried just giving the guy the cold shoulder, hoping he'd get the hint and avoid the impending ebbarassment, but noooo, so i ask him if he'd seen anyone from team 108. 5 minutes pass, this guy's still following us, and he had kept asking us questions until a lightbulb must have dawned when he asked "why are you looking for 108?" and i TRIED not making him look really silly by juss telling him "the guy i'm talking to is on that team" but his friends still made fun of him, and he turned around like no other.

th moral of that story is: if they're trying to walk away, don't pursue unless you wanna look pretty dumb in front of your friends

I figured out something, ask Tyler on 662 (Halon) I usually talk to my guy friend, long distance, at my expence mind you, and to tell other guy friends I do it and then go "Well I would call you, but don't have your number" That is so uber awesome, I now own Tyler's number, haha. I told him I had to post it, it has works like 5 times so far, whee.

As for something totally sweet. believe it or not, I will levae the person nameless, less they wanna fess up, but one of my friends is going to try and make a 4 hour round trip, twice mind you (once for parents to meet me, and the other for my prom) to come to prom with me. He is also canceling a trip to the keys he had planned, that is like the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me...::blush::

this is true, but be careful you're delivery is good,
b/c there is nothing worse then a romantic line
turned stockish

and for all of you guys thinking
'I'm not gonna bother being romantic, that stuff never works'
just think of it this way:

some girl comes up to you w/ a flower
looks deep into ur eyes and tells you
how beautiful they are,
would YOU not go weak in the knees?

haha, OK, well, i don't know,
maybe you should know the girl 1st.
but from what i know of my experience,
it turns the guys into mush:p

try something subtlety sweet 1st
if that's the approach you wanna take,
but be careful you don't come off as a freak
if you don't even know the girl...
unless that's the impression you wanna give
which is cool, i guess:D

I heard from a young teacher on another team that some boys are not very adept or polite when approaching the young ladies. She was on an elevator with a boy who said to her "Yo, you have some fine a-- b-----es on your team!" To which she immediately replied "Excuse me? Number one I am a teacher. Two you will not speak to me that way and three you will refer to me as Miss!"
Needless to say the boy was quite surprised.
A little tip to you fellas
1. Make sure the girl you approach is a actually a teenager.
2. You may want to use more endearing terms than "B---es" for girls.
3. You want to make sure they appreciate your interest before speaking.
Just a few suggestions.

I wouldn't call this lame, rather I might go so far as to call them smooth...

Well, both occurred on the same day, at Midwest. Hehe, and both were from the same team (imagine that ;) ) Well I saw one of the guys who had been on this particular team and graduated two years ago. Hehe, ironically, he had also hit on my two years ago at Disney--craaazy. Anyway, when we got done talking he slipped me a card with his # and sn when he hugged me goodbye.
The other guy is friends w/ Luis, a guy on my team, and he wanted his contact info. So I, being the nice person I am, offered to go get it from him (the guy from the other team). So when I went to get it, he wrote it down on a slip of paper and he was like yeah, and you can share this with Luis (the guy on my team) if you want. I was like hehehe...sweeeeet. Needless to say, at nats I found him again and well yay:)

this is vaguely related to robotics- one day, at a meeting, a bunch of us were talking about cheesy pick up lines. one guy apparently said his favorite was "baby, if you were a car door, id slam you all night long."

a few weeks later, at competition, my friends retelling this story; she repeats the pick up line. keep in mind that a guy said it. well, when she retells it to me i mis-hear her, and think she says "baby, if you were ricky ricardo, id slam you all night long." suffice to say, i was freaked out until she realized what i must have thought and corrected me. still an ongoing joke between her and i.

-Are you're parents aliens? Cuz you're outta this world!
-Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?
and my personal favorite
-I lost my phone number, can I get your's?
There was also those guys last year who kept following my friend and I around during competitions trying to film us "hugging their mascot" By the end, we had our big, bad robotics boys pretend they were our boyfriends.....

bc pick-up lines are fun! in jest and all. I mean, if you're not all sleezy about it, and then laugh and introduce yourself it's all good.
I joke about it with ppl all the time, I think they are simply so creative, that you would go to such leanths to talk to a girl. Given I perfer ppl to b honest/blunt at times, pick-up lines, in my view, take some presser off, and make everything easy. But I know most ppl don't think like me, so this is all a personal statement...
I've never use pick-up lines personally, but I don't mind them when they are used on me, as long as the other person understand that when i laugh, i'm laughing with them, not at them... haha

nway, if you are at a robotics comp, you are bound to run into creative ppl, so relish in it! just be respectful!

This isnt much of a pick up line... but are there any other girls who have had guys following them around and taking their picture, it happened to me last year and it was quite disturbing (you boys know who you are *cough*25*cough*)

asher

I HAVE! I feel your pain! The Pac. NorthWest regional (in Seattle) 2 years ago... There was this one guy, a volunteer for FIRST or something. He was doing inspections for robots in the pits, and he ALWAYS came over and started talking with me whenever he wasn't doing something. He'd put his arm on me and flirt with me openly. It was freaking scary.

AND... Hmmm... There was one other really good pickup line, but I just forgot it. I'll add it in later when I remember it.

Guy: Would you like a plum?
Girl: No (or yes it doesnt really matter)
Guy: How about a date ??

well if your into the strange ones made up from late nights working on the robot there's:
Can I wire brush your face?

You've made me so nervous that I've totally forgotten my standard pick-up line.

Excuse me, I just noticed you noticing me and I just wanted to give you notice that I noticed you too.

One of the greatest things I heard was last year at Regionals we were allied with team 1048 and 303 for the finals at MidAtlantics. As we were preparing in our pit and reviewing scouting information, I had a guy come up behind me and tell me to take off my shirt. I was completely caught off guard, and was in a deep discussion with my driving partner - in the mean time, both he and my partner started laughing because they realized that I had no idea who he was. The guy that had walked up to me, and told me to take my shirt off was the driver from 1048 which we were allied, and we were going to go spy on the drawing board of an opposing team in an upcoming match.

...pfew, that caught me off guard , LOL!

Okay, this is a little backwards. My first year at Nats a girl walked up to me and used the old "Did it hurt?","Did what hurt?","When you fell from heaven." thing. I immediatly knew something was up, and sure enough a couple guys from my team were off to the side with a video camera.

They made people do some weird stuff to get those little stuffed peguins we were handing out...

In 2001 in Florida during nationals one of our male team members fell asleep in the pits. So being the good team mates that we are ;) , we poured water on his lap and had a girl from another team wake him up asking if their was something wrong!! lol

Conclusion: You don't need no stinkin' pick up lines, just some great team mates to help you in your cause!!! lol

also earlier ppl were saying stuff about relationships taking up too much time- a relationship is what you want it. you dont need to talk to your bf every day, you dont need to see him every day let alone every week. find a guy thats as busy as you or that cares enough about u to realize that your worthwhile even if you're busy.

This last weekend at the portland regional was one of the sadest things I have ever seen. As a person and a robotics student I was very um well scared. These infamous kids in capes didn't show up the first day and knew nothing about robotics. Seriously their robot was a Fridge. But that wasn't the bad thing. We have 5 girls on our team and well there guys were a little off to say the least.. The events that soon went down were quite scary... Well we shall call her roberta so this roberta has no involvement with the capes but still managed to get the unfortunete task of having a pocket full of email address... they even asked roberta and another girl we will call denise to swing dance with them.. it was quite funny.. but hey these guys pulled it together as a rookie team and were auctually pretty cool.. some of the peope on our team might have been a little scared but without them we wouldn't have made such a impact at the portland and we have to thank Chunky Dunawell for that...

haha i was the lead scout for team 824, i remember the dudes in capes. i think one of those dudes came up to one of our girls and out of the blue asked for her email...

but i congratulate them on a great first-year effort, and they're already making a reputation, which is crucial at competitions...

because i know that my original post on the bad pickup lines is hidden somewhere way deep in these 40+ pages, I'd like to reiterate the line that I was inspired to invent after reading all these horrible, horrible, pickup lines:

"there must be some sushi around here, because you're as hot as wasabi"

Grr. I just typed up a whole bunch of them and then went to submit and it says I wasn't logged in, so I lost them all. Grr. Let me try to remember them:

"Hey baby, can I cap your goal?"
"Wanna hang on a 10-foot pole?"
"You make my autonomous program drive in circles!"
"You threw off my robot's IR sensors... 'cause you're really HOT!"
"How do you do it? You do so much hard on the robot AND you manage to keep yourself absolutely BEAUTIFUL!"
"I heard your team wouldn't let you in the drivers' area... they were afraid that you'd be too much of a distraction!"

Probably the only one that I've actually used (as a joke of course)...
"You've stolen my heart... but that's okay 'cause I've got three more back home in the freezer."

Don't know what I am going to do at Atlanta when my BLATENTLY obvious and awesome driving skills cause mass hysteria. I let my actions do my talking.

well, I haven't gotten any lame pick up lines sent towards me..other than the classic "Wanna screw?(while holding out an actual screw)" one. but I know I myself have gone up to a guy and the first words to escape my lips were "You have really pretty hair *giggle*". :D

FIRST is aimed at those girls on your team. They don't know anything about mechanics, or electricity, or programming, or machining. They have no interest in it, either. They're perfect candidates for FIRST.

Well said. I agree with that...I had no intention of going into an engineering field or even anything relative to technology. Heck, up until recently I still favored the old method of writing letters rather than e-mailing. FIRST picked me up somewhere during my sophomore year and now I am considering it. Some people know exactly what they want to do when they get out of high school. I am not that fortunate. I am fortunate in that FIRST is offering me a glimpse before I make a commitment. So maybe I don't know how to program? But I will. Thank you M. Krass for putting into words what I have been trying to say for so long.

Ok, pickup line my friend was the recipient of at the Philly regional just a bit ago. It was her job to find our team some shrink wrap for our crate and was successful in getting some. When she went to return it to the person who lent it to her, he responded, "Since you borrowed our shrink wrap, you think I could borrow your number?" It took her a bit to figure out what he was referring to, her first reaction was it had something to do with her team number, but go figure it was an origional pickup line.

Teeheee! I didn't really get told anything at a regional. My general pickup line, though hardly desperate is "can I have a hug?". Simplicity in its essence! The best CD pickup line I ever got (sorta pickupline) is "I don't have a DDR shirt...can I borrow yours?" That was great...

simplicity....reminds of something my friend said, not very relevnat but cute

"short and sweet makes nice yrbook messages and girls"

Just a suggestion, but when refering to talking to girls and such never eveeeer use/ refer to things as "lines", i doubt that if you were a girl you would want to her "lines" from some boy (unless it was poetry or somthing)

This might be on here already, but...

This was said to a friend of mine at the Detroit regional this year.
"I'll be your human player..."

A couple friends and I decided that the turn down line needs to be "Sorry, but it's autonomous mode...hands off" :p

I've got a bit of a funny story. At Nat's I had a guy come up to our pit & ask if we had any buttons to trade. Our driver, John, said we were out. So the guy puts his arm around me & says "well I'll just take her instead." John laughed like hell. I just felt awkward.

Ok, this isn't really a pickup line... It's more of a "compliment gone wrong" So 1am Sunday morning after Championships, I'm in the Mezzanine of our Fabulous hotel (or... not) with one guy from my team and like 3 guys from another team. As MANY of you may recall, one of the teams (was it 79?) had basket balls or something stuffed up their shirts. One of the guys on the other team says "Yeah, they had huge jugs, but they didn't look that great." I was just thinking 'ok, whatever...' When this guy turns to me and says, "Oh, you've got nice jugs though"

So what do you think? Compliment gone wrong???

So my team is from Philly area and we forgot our plastic wrap at a competition so my friend asks another team for their wrap, a little while later after everything is all packed up some guy comes up to my friend and says "Can I borrow your number since I let you borrow my plastic wrap."

at the canadian regional, i was handing out bracelets and buttons for my team. because the bracelets were not made out of stretchy elastic, (they were gimp - its cheaper), the bracelets came in all different sizes. the guy asked me for a bracelet (though i had already given him like 10) but i didnt have any that could fit his hands. and so he goes "thats all right, how about instead of you giving me a bracelet, i take you out to dinner?"

fist off, i'm a guy, i'm just sayin' what pick-up line I'll be using just so you can be prepared:

Here's a line I got:
"I’m a systems engineer, which system would you like to test first?"

Actually, when I was a rookie in FIRST I realized that at Regional competitions there were a good number of relatively good-looking & smart guys present (way higher percentage than in a typical high school). So, I learned my networking skills by approaching guys and starting conversations. Now, most of my relationships have been with FIRST guys. I have tried to make a ruling: No more FIRST guys! But it never works. We just have too much in common...

This one guy from another team last year came up to me... it was actually really gross... and asked me if i would help him play with his balls. It was so gross... needless to say some guys on first are just icky.

I've never been to a FIRST comp. No one has ever tried to "pick me up". Until track regionals last year, nobody had ever told me I was hot (a couple of my guy friends signed my yearbook, but I think they were just trying to be nice). Geez, it hurts when guys talk about "cute" girls. I'm a very shy person and I would have the hardest time trying to start a conversation with a guy, though I did give this dude (that I have a major crush on) a handmade Valentine card (which he loved!!!, I think...). If you have any pointers, PLEASE tell ASAP!!

Ohhhh trust me, I know how you're feeling. I have changed so much since high school (no guy had ever asked me out or got near me in high school)... and FIRST is the reason for all that change. No guys really approached me at FIRST Regionals either; it was I who had to learn the art of walking up to them, starting a conversation with them about their robot, and let it go from there (boy, did that usually work too! :) ). It's a skill that has evolved into an ability to talk to VIPs and getting them interested in FIRST.

In addition, I've noticed that guys usually talk ABOUT "cute" girls but they don't talk TO them. Us enginerd girls are far too interesting for them to pass up ;) . Nevertheless, If the guy would prefer the "cute" one, then they are not my type anyway.

Sorry so long.

lalala- being "hot" and being the cutest girl shouldnt be all wht guys want. It should be about personality and acting yourself around guys. Thats was very awsome and a very great idea that you made the handmade valentine card for your crush. Thats being yourself and tahts what guys shoud look for, or hopefully. Dont be scared to talk to guys, just be yourself and itll all be good. If you have trouble starting up a conversation with a guy..ask him anything...liek if hes in a sport ask him about that and how its going. Or just in general like Hey Whats up..Hows it going...hows your day. Im a very talkative person and very random as sum people tell me so i just talk about butterflies or llamas sumtimes to any one even if its a guy in my class thats cute...hell just laugh and start talking to me about llamas or butterflies!

As far as getting pick up lines go...all them are cheesy...i havent really had any at robotics competetions...but in gymnastics class when guys are in there working out with us theyll just act stupid and try to hit on me with stupid cheesy pick up lines that i just laugh histercally at for like 15 seconds then get back to wht i was doing and pretend they hadn't talk to me. lol

my suggestion: skip the pick up line and just talk.

i find pick-up lines a turnoff because it just makes me wonder how much that line was used - not cool. i'm less likely to respond to a "hey girl *insert cheesy line*" then a "hey, i'm from *blank*, is that your robot?"

hahaha .. but at the same time .. a guy with the guts to use a FUNNY pick up line (yes must be funny) is worth talking to for some time because you know he has to be somewhat interesting .... maybe not to go out with though

yes i'll give you that. i'm definitely a sucker for a sense of humor. if you can make me laugh, you got +2 cool points right there. perhaps a pickup line so-cheesy-it's-sad would make me laugh. just as long as it's not the "ey gurrrrl". reminds me of those *insertword* ppl who honk at you when you are desperately trying to get home.

<psst.. Guys.. learn from these strange collection of words these females speak. When you are able to get inside their heads, you will either A) Learn a lot, and learn how to talk to them and thus lead to a relationship and/or a life long friendship, or.. B) Learn way to much, and end up running away screaming. - Either way, it'll be a learning experience. And if you learn nothing else in FIRST, at least learn how to interact socially. Because, even if you don't go into a Science, Technology, or Engineering career (as is the whole (original) basis if FIRST) when you grow up, you will still need to know how to socially interact.>
