universal goal designations : The poll

Thanks for putting this together, Denman. I started the discussion, but with the build in progress, and being new at this, I just didn't have time to follow through and figure out how to set up a poll. There are a few comments and clarifications, however, that I would like to make about the options.

Number 1
Far Left........Far Mid........Far Right
Mid Left........CENTER........Mid Right
Near Left......Near Mid.......Near Right
This seems to be very popular, but I like using the word home instead of near as in number 6. Something warm and fuzzy about bringing your robot home at the end of the match reinforces this. Maybe you change 6 to this since it has no votes yet.

I also really liked the converse of this which was suggested by DougHogg where you call out row one right, row two left, three center, etc.

Maybe you could add this or replace number 7 which has no votes and I don't think would really work because it's not intuitive.

Finally, my intent when I wrote #9 was that it would be called out as goal one-one, goal two-three, etc. where the first digit is the row and the second the column. goal two - row three. This also might take too much thinking.

Numbered systems do lend themselves to hand signals between coaches, however you shouldn't stick your hands in front of your drivers!

We use #1 now, but who knows what convention we'll use 'during the heat of battle'. It will probably involve a lot of grunting and hopping up and down in frustration! ;)

As if you are reading the field, starting at top left and working your way to the right and down. It just seems like the logical pattern to us as that is how we commonly associate things that we see (at least for us on the team that onyl speak english :rolleyes: )

Reading over the replies, I decided to vote for number one because of all the variation in how teams are dealing with this.

If we use number 1 (far left, near left, etc.), it will be understandable no matter what system our partners have used previously.

Unfortunately, there is a significant population of people who do not immediately know which direction "left" is, especially when on the verge of sensory overload.

Maybe next year we'll implement a heads-up display for the driver, and the coach can use a control pad to superimpose tactical commands on it? :cool: We do have a few LED-bearing pairs of safety goggles...hmm...

with my drive team because in the box the goals are always in the same orientation, but as a general universal designation I think Number 8 (using red and blue endzones as a base) makes the most sense because right/left, top/bottom will change depending on where a person is standing, should you happen to be talking about the goals when not in the box.

I discourage the use of a numbering system because they can become confusing, but for the purposes of the drivers I would use the terms "home, middle, far" and "left, center, right." However, this system works properly only for the drivers, and I would suggest either a single system that is universal or an additional system for the audiece and scorekeepers to use, such as what i suggested here (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=343739&postcount=40). However, if this is in terms of drivers only, I recommend using option 2.

I Thought this was a good idea origionally, but I think this discussion is really about drive teams who will be switching back and fourth between the red and blue side. Let's hope they can remember which tetras to pick up!
The announcers will probably use a red/center/blue, front/middle back system, but it won't be relevant to the drive team.

So the universal system won't be universally universal!

How about - Drive Team Relative Goal Location Designations. :cool:
