View Full Version : Engineer Movies
Driving home this evening I realized that there wasn't much I wanted to do other than watch a good movie. But since this is Engineers Week and I are one I thought an Engineer movie would be fun. But I couldn't think of one I haven't seen already.
So what movies have you seen that showcase engineers?
Here's the list I can remember in no particular order
October Sky
Apollo 13
The Right Stuff
The Aviator
Cheaper by the Dozen (the old one not the recent Steve Martin version)
Notice these are mostly also about aerospace, but engineering affects all areas of society, surely there are more?

There was a time, and maybe it was just because I was looking for it, but there was a time when almost every movie I saw, the main character was an Architect. It was wild.
I would like to say that most of your movies that you listed are about showcasing space and flying relataed engineering fields, just because those are the most recent (in the public eye) enginnering fields that most people A) find cool, and B) Don't understand.
I would think that almost all sci-fi movies have an engineering role in there somewhere, but I think you hit the nail on the head with your list.
I am at a loss to find some more engineering focused movies.
Hmm.. Now I will have to go through my entire movie collection.
Most movies I can think of, are sort of like the movie Sphere, where the engineering team go in to find something wrong, and do a search and recovery operation.
Well.. What about Back To The Future? Does a scientist count as an engineer??

Its not exactly a movie but From the Earth to the Moon is very heavy in to engineering.

Some students as Drexel University made a short film about their experience there and trying to get Systems homework handed in on time. If your an engineer I think you'll enjoy it.

I suppose Bridge on the River Kwai and The Great Escape might qualify.
The pyramids get built in The 10 Commandments;)
Chain Reaction (Can you imagine Keanu Reeves running a FIRST team?)
If you broaden the set to include TV shows, then every episode of Gilligan's Island with "The Professor" in it! He was really more of an engineer than a scientist - of all the scientists I know, not one of them could make a radio out of a coconut, but most of the engineers I know can tell you the dielectric constant of coconut husk!

one of my favorites "real genius" is defiantly an engineering movie

On the TV genre there is only one engineer and that's MacGyver.
Does the Gyro Copter flyer in Mad Max qualify as an engineer :D
Than there's Captain Nemo from 20,000 leagues under the sea. And we can't forget Q, or R, from James Bond.
On another note, can you imagine Dr. Emmett Brown being a FIRST mentor :ahh:
Wayne Doenges
Lemmings non sumus
How could we forget 'Contact'?
It's not specifically about engineering, but it is easily one of the best sci/fi movies and my personal favorite.
Also, 'The Dish' is a pretty good one. Its about the guys who ran a radio telescope in Australia during the Apollo 11 mission, and where responsible for receiving the radio and television transmission of the landing. Not a drama, not a comedy, it's more 'cute' than anything. But if your a fan of Sam Neil, or just like a quiet feel good movie, it's worth it.

How about Short Circut? Number 5 is basically a very advanced robot( a little overwieght for FIRST and that laser has to go but he's competition ready. That A.I is a big plus). I don't think scientists don't design robots.
what was the name of the one about an guy who reversed engineered objects...then was hired and had his memory removed...but got an envelope holding misc junk objects?
