After viewing robots from other teams, What team or teams are you afraid to compete against in a match and why?

I think, individually, I am most afraid to compete against a team who doesn't have a firm understanding of some level of gracious professionalism. I think that is any individual's reasonable fear. I don't want Rowdy 6 to be eaten by a mean robot.

However, in terms of competition fear, I'm nervous for those awesome rookie teams that you may not know about much but that just come and do awesome with some fantastic strategy. I look forward to working with them though :) Rookies rock. That's in interest of success, casue there are a few every year. Take for example the delicious team 1388, a member of Buzz's alliance last year that won at Curie Division.

I am not afraid to go against anyone, I cant wait to go against 111, 71, 23, 303, 254.. etc.
It isn't about fear its about respect, Win or loose its all learning experience. How to have a better strategy, or add/fix things in the pit to do better when you go up against a high caliber team

Not too worried. I just take it one day at competition at a time. I'm just excited to see how well our 'bot does. =D Teams don't make me scared. All I need is confidence in my team's 'bot, and then I'm all set! =)

Nobody.

I don't mean to say that in an arrogant way, but there's no way to really avoid competing against a team we're paired up with. So if 1293 gets paired up against some monster alliance (say, 25, 179, and 180), I'll be all for going out there, stacking 'em up, and letting the proverbial chips fall where they may.

Not afraid. Fascinated.
I want to see team 340, 73, 237, what has 494 done, 1126( I know you're robot is fine Alex. Stop trying to pry it from me :p ) has up their sleeve. Just a little over two days away to find out.

From a driving standpoint...
If you are afraid, you lose. I have to go out and play the game the way my machine plays it. If I am "afraid" mistakes happen. Confidence is the key.
But on the same note... If you asked me what team would I least likely want to go up against... thats easy. Any team with 2 chips and a FP on each side of their drivetrain for the simple reason of hard and fast defence.
I would also have to say that I would not want go go up against team 25... but Corey is too much of a cutie to be "afraid" of. ;) :p

Ok, let me try to re-direct this thread in the direction that I think was originally meant. What Henry means (I think) is what teams do you think will be your biggest competition given the scouting that your team has done.

At UTC, I am very eager to see teams 230, 195, and 173 in that order. I feel that they (with my limited scouting abilities) will be some of the more successful teams at the regional. So afraid? No. Are they gonna be great competition? You bet!

Good luck, can't wait til comps.

I am not really afraid of one robot specifically. I am just afraid that during qualifying matches we will be allied with not so great alliance partners and we will be against some good teams. I didn't fear this last year because we could handel ourselves pointwise, but this year its anyone's game........ your partners are very important this year!!!

GO 1403!!!

The biggest teams that I fear are all going to be at the Purdue Regional. The powerhouses of Hammond, Wildstang, Chief Delphi, and others are all going to be there and I think it is going to be some stiff competition.

I have to agree with what Henry said, no not being afraid of me...well...we will see... but the fact that if you are afraid, you have already taken a big hit in your chances. During the season i was sooo incredibly nervous to not mess up. So almost everything i tried to complete, was delayed a good second, and made me lose a few matches. During the offseason, i lost that fear and started to drive every match like i could win it. 3 wins and a 2nd while having fun is alot better then 8th and scared to death. Confidence is the most important thing out on the field, without it, a loss is that much closer.

In turn, i would have to say, i am the most afraid of 222. They are always a great bot and with Henry at the sticks, they are amazing. He has something like 4 2nds at regionals and 3 offseason wins. Past 222, 45, 237, and 1676, i think will be huge players this year. Even more so then they have before.

Who knows if we will ever compete against them... but teams 254 and 60.

They have a very similar robot design as us, and their robots look amazing.

Sure, its all about Henry now. LOL J/K. Yes fear is a bad thing. During the mini season all I would do is fear the other alliance. Why? I don't know. Just the fact that there is a good chance someone is going to do something that will make you wonder how you will be getting out of it. As a rookie driver, I thought too much about what the other teams are doing on the Field rather than what was going on with our robot. Yes, it cost us a lot of losses (and I feel horrible about) but winning second place at the Summer Frenzy was the event were my fear diminished. Then we came out winning two minis in a row, ignoring my fears going back to what Henry said.

I don't fear teams much anymore, but I am going to worry sometimes when we can't cap a really tall goal if it ever happens. Wildstang. Have to watch out for them. Also teams 25, 303, 45 and many others. ;)

I haven't seen any really forehead-slap ("Why didn't I think of/do that!") robots. I have seen a lot of really good rookie robots though...

fear is not in my vocabulary.

I welcome all competition with utter most of gracious professionalism.

I don't think I fear any team's robot.

But teams 118 and 476 seem to be bringing very good robots to Lone Star and are going to provide lots of great competition and/or are going to be a great alliance partner. Especially 118 seeing that their robot can stop Godzilla and all.

I totally agree! I also think if you have no confidence in your own bot to do well, then when you face the people you "fear" you will have almost no chance of winning. But if I have to say who I think will be good... ...I would say the obvious...111, 461, and 108 etc. I do have some rookie picks...1504 and 1646...I think both will win rookie all-star awards.

i don't fear this team so much as they always seem to have something ready for me and whatever team I'm on.....Metal-In-Motion (343) by nationals they always seem to have the game down pat....even at the regionals they always seem to have something special up their sleeve for me. I wouldn't have it any other way cause one of these times I'll get em back :) 1083 has some crazy strategy guy there so they are always a pain and if they were still around 267 always made me a little paranoid....

We never worry about robots!

We watch out for alliances and strategies. I have seen the smallest and weakest of machines take out the Giants of FIRST, with just the right strategies and partners.

Its all in your mind! Any team can be dangerous under the right circumstances.

Respect them ALL or Perish!!!! :D

Stephen..I know your roots. 312-Heatwave has always dished out its share. We have played with them and against them and believe me, you want to play with them. Same goes for 16,21,79,108,180...OMG we're in trouble... :ahh:

I fear all robots that are top heavy and may fall over on me when I am announcing. Almost got hit 4 or 5 times last year and I think it might be worse this year as teams will be trying to get off field objects.

Not afraid of anybody really. I'm sure Tic-Tac/Rhino/Land-Shark/Tank will be able to handle what ever comes at it. Although I was impressed with 230 at the scrimmage.

Travis just released the picture of their robot, so I must say..

968

That is probably the NICEST looking robot I have ever seen, and based on its design and subsytems, looks like it could be the best robot in FIRST history.

Thats just my opinion though... ;)

i really don't think we fear teams we just like to have a challenge...
some teams yes are stronger but always you never know what's gonna happen, the luck of the draw just gets it...cause especially those last few seconds change the score many times...

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!!

To those who said 180..you can fear b/c the El Chupacabra is HERE!!! :D

The only team I'm fearing this year is team 330. They were the first team we lost to in Atlanta last year. It was awesome.

I'll tell you one other thing: I don't fear the Cheesy Poofs!!!!! *ferocious growl*

Michael Leicht

what is with 25 being so feared i just see the fear of them ramming someone. or playing D as Corey puts it. but they are not that scary the teams i am worried about have to be 237, national champs 71, and 469. theses teams did some crazy stuff last year can't wait to see what they do this year.

I agree completely with this statement. Many robots (as far as I've noticed on CD) can extend to 12' high or even higher. Most will attempt to carry a tetra at that height as well. With many of the goals positioned on the sides of the field, and robot contact expected because defense and goal protection is permitted, many robots can become falling tree trunks instantly. I fear the safety of the human players and the referees and camera people. 6 tall robots in a crowded field will not be a pretty sight when aggressive matches occur.

As for specific robots, there is nothing to fear. It's more interesting to learn about how their robot operates and the systems it uses. FIRST is a learning experience.

Truth be told, it's not a well designed good performing robot but a poorly designed poor performing robot that you are saddled with in an alliance that does more damage to you than the opposing alliance.
That's the robot I would fear.

i dont fear other teams as much as i fear my own team and what power our robot has. and if i had to fear something it would be the Florida competion because there are so many good teams there. anything could have there and anyone could win.

Ya in 2003 i watched 254 dominate at both sacramento and svr. Saw their bot this year and looks good, well see how they do :). Then again, our bot is much better this year is well.

02-03-2005, 23:49
yea.. i agree with jackson. 254 was a beastly robot last year, im sure they'll do amazing things this year as well. however, we at 1072 have built a fairly decent robot as well... right now I'm actually more afraid of our driver (alex) than any other team. He attacked me once with the robot. not fun. anyway.. its late and tomorrow is the sac. regional. soo jittery.

good luck all teams tomorrow :D

I would not quite call it fear, but respect. Team 71 has our number. We have been up against them 7 times during Regional and Championship elimination rounds, and they have beat us 6 times. And... never have we been allied with them after the alliance selection dust settles on Saturday.

Don't get me wrong, 45 and 71 are good friends, and we have much fun together. It just gets exhaustive to be looking across the field at them in the finals.

Efficiency will win this year and a couple teams that were efficent very early on (the Washington DC Scrimmage) were 225 (the only team there with an autonomous program) and 122. I am eager to play against these guys.
