View Full Version : Halo 2 Tournament
Hey, I've heard rumors of a halo 2 tournament during the Championships... any truth to it? If not, anyone wanna help me set one up?

Hmm, there will be, I'm sure of it. Last two years i've set up entire networks at the hotels i've stayed at. Let me tell you, airport secuity was perplexed when they saw I had over 1k feet of cat5 and network switch gear + xbox in my carry on. (some things are more important to carry on). we stayed at the westin last year, and I had cat5 running in the stairwells to other floors to play against other teams. This year I'm staying Mariot Marquis, not the west in, which was an awesome place, but the time it took to get any where do to the crowding was nuts. Great rooms though. No doubt i'll have enough cat5 and switch gear to set up some massive multiplayer bouts.

I know we've been thinking of having some games.. wireless network of course.. provided I can get my laptop to bridge the wireless and ethernet networks. We're in the Holiday Inn, and it will be a 802.11b network :)
Anyone else staying there that wants to have some games? We would need another xbox ;)
I'm actually hoping to go get a 500ft box of network cabling, so that would work :)

500ft or so should do ya, no need to go crazy like me. Wireless is nice, I think I have a wireless router lying around somewhere, Got it for free for buying something else at comp usa a while back, now just to remember where it is. I wonder how far away your hotel is from ours....I;m experimenting with building long range yagi antennas. (12+ Db gain) and more at night, which is when we would probably be playing anyway...so we could probably create a long range wireless network, if you had an antenna, and I had one, and we pointed them at each other, assuming some type of line of sight, it may work. I'll research where your hotel is and I'll compare it to where my hotel is, if by some chance there could be a line of sight, we could create a network for lan gamming, might be a fun experiment. if we have a good line of sight, we should be able to carry more than enough bandwidth over the short distance. This setup would work for about ten miles under ideal conditions.
which holiday inn are you staying at? The one on intl' blvd? We are staying at the marriot marquis, so once I know which one your staying at, I can determine if it would be possible.

You could ad hoc between two or more x-boxes using the game wireless adapters. That would seem to be easire than lugging around lots of Cat5 cable.
Thats my $0.02

yea, but in the past the cat 5 has worked great, as long as we manage to keep it out of the way (hide it) no one bothers with it, and we do it late at night, and clean it up before anyone is the wiser. That way not everyone has to have a wireless adapter. right now I'm experimenting with a Yagi antenna built from a Pringle's can to increase the gain by 12 DB's or more. So, if we wanted to play against other people in the other hotels...we could. I'm even testing passive repeaters to get the signal around corners, but I doubt I'll lug everything down to Atlanta, I may bring two Yagi's, so if I had to I could set up a long range wireless link to another hotel. We'll see, I'll bring enough gear to get up and running, I'm sure others will bring gear, and I'm sure there will be some LAN gaming. Idk, maybe if you interested in building your own Pringle's can Yagi antenna, scope out this link.

I have waited for this thread for um....SO LONG
I am in... I have about 40 feet of cat 5 heh.
I will bring my box and all the goodies like halo1+2 and 4 controllers
Maybe we should get some cell phone numbers around through IM's or PM's or w/e to organize it once we get to the hotel.

I have to wait until I get a replacement MB for one of my computers.. then I can start trying to see if my laptop can bridge a wireless and wired network. Otherwise I'll have to think of something else

Looking at a map, it shows my hotel, and the holiday inn about 1/3 of a mile away. My hotel is a 50 story beast, so line of site is still passable if my room is somewhere close to the south west corner of the building. The distance is so short that I'm not even worried about creating a network, I would still be interested in finding hotels farther away to establish a network with. Halo LAN game here we come. The games will probably be held late at night cause I'm sure we will all have things to do. Like swimming in the pools, enjoying the hot tubs, and hanging out with friends. Getting everyone's cell phone numbers is a good idea, I think that should be done in email or PM's as well.

I don't believe so. It really depends on the range of the wireless networks. I'm actually hthinking about buying a 5db antenna for my laptop.. instead of my current one which has an integrated card and antenna.
If the wireless reaches, we would be able to form an ad-hoc wireless netowkr, meaning the xbox's would be going over the lan, not the internet. Its the same thing if you take 2 xbox game adapters (which are nothing more then wireless bridges) and use them to link the system.

If a game gets going, myself and two other team mates will gladly participate. To be an egotist, I think we're pretty good too. I'll try to keep updated about it.

As for the 500ft network cable, cat5 can only go 340ft before it needs to be boosted again. Just something to consider. And I don't remember where we are staying, but I'm sure that we will join in on the fun also. We have a few good players also(me being included :D ). Anyways, see you all there!!!

You are correct, cat5 can only maintain a good connection up to about 100 meters before there are too many collisions. I will be bringing a lot more than 500 ft of cat 5 (there are no lengths exceeding the max obviously) I will also, as statded in one of my previous posts be bringing enough switchgear to support a network as large as we would ever need. I still plan on bringing my wap, and I plan on experimenting and testing my pringles cantenna which I made from plans I found on the web. Although just the other day in I forget which store I saw the real "cantenna" for something about 40 bucks, looks excatly like a pringles can...I wonder.. In all honesty though,. I dont know how much free time I will have, and I'll definately be spending some of it in the pool.

Man, I wish my team was going to the championship now... I feel like crying. H2 tournaments are awesome and I'm totally missing out.
Hey, Team 810 themselves is going to have our own halo 2 tournament, and we welcome competition. If you'd like to challenge us or want to merge your tournament with ours, instant message me at at Kyle2007b on AIM, even if I'm on my cell.
I have 3 guys on my team who are basically amazing at Halo from what I have seen.
Can all of you that are interested PM me your:
name
cell phone number
team number
and email addresses.
I will compile a list of this stuff and email it to everyone. This would be a good way of keping in contact during the competition for tournaments.
I will be staying at the marquis.
We could do a tournament just by teams to see which team has the best players period. Or we could just do it by individuals.
We could probably get a few pools going if you guys want.
I am staying at the Mariott Marquis.
So yeah please PM me all this stuff or email it to therealsantosh@gmail.com or 28ksucks@gmail.com
Also mention if you guys have cerfuws and what you can bring along (Xboxes, controllers, games, etc.)

I am borrowing one of the school's LCD wall projectors for various demos the team has been doing. My friends and I have used it to play Halo 2 from floor to ceiling. I'll see what I can do about catching up with some of you guys in Atlanta. if there is a LAN party at the Omni, someone PM me about it, I may end up there.

Barry, so, you've gotten a taste of what it's like to game BIG screen style. I think in that respect im spoiled, we built a home thertre downstairs, and we use a lcd projecter, 400:1 contrast ratio, High def capable (and boy is it capable)!!. we have super bowl parties down there once a year, but mostly we watch movies, and play xbox on it. We also use the 60 inch lcd projection to lan game with, thats our living room tv. whole house is networked, wired, and wireless, so lan gaming in our house, be it computer, or xbox is a snap. I hope you guys didn't forget your pencil, and paper, because im gonna bring you back to school. (shameless halo referance)
The screen is set up for approx 100 inches diaganal, but it can go up to 23 feet I beleive, we have been thinking about knocking down the back wall, and extending the room even more, so we could use the entire wall.

1089 whupped up on 365 in omni north last night. Shame their robot is a lot better than ours :)
If you're in Omni, plug into your desk and we can just do system link. And if you happened to get Unreal Championship 2, even better! We have 2 copies of that, and it's really cool!
1089 has a team meeting at 10, but there will be some of us on before and after, I think, though some are going to the arcade up the street.
