I've noticed that many people think this project is "exclusive" and that it takes somethign special to be included. I'd like to clear this up by saying that anybody who wants to help is encouraged to. you don't need to be a programmer or an animator or have any special kind of knowledge to help. if you know enough about computers to be reading this thread, odds are you know enough that you can be of assistance.
here are some of the major areas people can get involved in:
Documentation
Layout - diagramming user interfaces and other game aspects
Databasing - create lists and tables to organize information about the game
Programming
gameplay - robot controls, game setup
menu interfaces - pre-game and pause menus
2004 game and rules - objectives, elements, rules, and penalties of the 2004 game
Update Manager - small application to check for updates to various URC componants
Installers
2D
textures - materials for robots, objects, etc.
menu backgrounds
graphics in menus and UI
3D
robot modeling - modeling for teams without animators, tweaking models
field and arena modeling - field and game locations
Sound
sound effects - robot sounds and game tones/jingles
original music - your own songs you are willing to let us use
band contact - get bands to let us use their music
Web
main site - standard HTML, Java, etc.
wiki - special wiki syntax
servers - letting us use some space for pages/files/mirrors
another way to help that ANYBODY can do is testing. it will probably be a few months before we have any file releases, but when we do anybody can download what we have and report bugs.
if you are unsure how you can help, want to suggest something, have questions, or just want to talk about the game, you can try out AIM chatroom "Ultimate Robot Challenge" we are often in there. or you could just catch me on AIM, "Mike Ciance"
