It's that time again. Time for everybody to come face to face and get out from behind those monitors, keyboards, and hundreds of miles of Internet.
What: 2005 Chief Delphi Web Hug
When: Thursday, 12:00 Noon
Where: Courtyard between Hall C and the Dome. (details (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=363019#post363019))
Who: You have a forum account? You're invited.
We will give a quick hello, let people meet & greet, and hand out some goodies. Shouldn't take up too much time.
This year, instead of forum-based awards, we will be having a raffle. You must be present to win. You will get a 'ticket' from a page on the forums, which I will be writing and making public this weekend. There are many chances to win, so .. stay tuned for details.
People have mentioned that in the past they forgot about the webhug because Thursday is a very busy day. So, coming soon (this weekend?) will be a page where you can put in your cell phone # and receive a reminder text page 1/2 hour before the webhug, so you remember to come. :)
If you don't know what the Web Hug is, and want to read about previous years, see these threads:

One of the things i am most disapointed about having to miss this year because of not being able to attend the championship event.
THE WEBHUG!
Someone throw some extra special hugging action in there for me, and snag me some of those goodies:)

THE WEBHUG! I second that! And this is the second year in a row I'll be missing the Championship. :(
Next year I'll be there .... I hope!!
I'll try to sneak away from queuing to attend.

You won't be forgotten!
And (kudos to Brandon) I won't miss the webhug this year if I get a text message for it!

The location is TBA while I do some research. Anne Bergeron let me know that the pits moved this year, so I want to make sure we're meeting in a place thats central & convenient. I'll post a reply here, as well as update the portal announcement when we figure out for sure where.

Brandon - what if there are practice matches that we can't miss? (I'm the driver.) Would we still be able to win something since we are "present" at the arena, but not at the WebHug?

Yes - I would hate to miss it because I've never been to one before. But who doesn't like getting free stuff?

Ok, we've come up with a better (hopefully more central) location for this years WebHug. Last year there was a large FIRST banner where teams took a lot of team photos, like this one (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/pictures.php?s=&action=single&picid=8072). We are going to have it in that courtyard.
It is right between Hall C and the Dome, so it should be a pretty central location.
See attachment for a map of the facility.
Thanks to Ricky Q and Jeremy R for help figuring out where to relocate to.

There is a lunch break starting at 12:15 - maybe it would make more sense to have the meeting then or 12:30.
Unfortunately I don't get in until that night so I won't be able to make it, but if you see me on field reset/repair Fri/Sat please say hi.

That probably wont happen....FIRST is known for running very behind, so they shorten the lunch break and it turns into a 15-20 minute break before they get back to matches.
Ryan Albright

ya very good chance them might even cancel the lunch break. I will be there for the 2nd time. It was alot of fun last year. Its fun meeting the people behind the post and avatars :)

high-fives can happen after. ;)
I almost missed last year except someone got me on the way. If you can help an old man and see me in the pits, please remind me cause I have a very short memory when I get busy.
You won't be able to miss me, Just look for crazy old man with wild hair.

Our flight arrives at 10:45 at the ATL airport, so we probably will miss it (DCA Fan and I). Baggage, rental car, MARTA. and baggage drop off will probably take a few hours (it's all about the math!).

I should be there, as long as everything ends up going according to plan. I didn't end up going last year because I totally forgot, not to mention that I had only begun to post a couple of weeks before nationals. I really wouldn't have recognized anyone.

I was there last year, and I'll be there again. Even if I am anti-hug. XD See the white bandana? I'm right behind it LOL

I'll definitely be around, I've been so anxious for this! If someone sees me around the time of the webhug, and I'm not heading over, yank my shirt and I'll come with ya...after giving you a hug! =) Besides, I'm the PR gal, so I'll be running around the whole competition...yay for sneakers.
I'm going to definitely sign up for that cell phone reminder. w00t to that! Good idea, whomever came up with that idea. =D

Starting in about 20 minutes we will start giving out raffle tickets for the Web Hug raffle. We will have a bunch of prizes to give away, similar to last year. This year, we will be raffling them off rather than basing the giveaways on forum statistics.
On the 47 minute mark (the 60 seconds between XX:47:00 and XX:47:59) of every hour from now until the Sunday night before the Championships, a link will show up at the top of every page. Click that, and get a ticket. We will be giving out 15 every hour. You may get one ticket this week (4/2-4/10) and one next week (4/11-4/17), giving you two total chances to win a prize.
Get a ticket. Print it out. Bring it with you. Win a prize .. if you're lucky.

Anybody want to grab me out of the pits for this? As long as i don't have a practice match to go to I will be there. So any one going by 229's pits pull me out.
Thanks,

This is my fourth nationals, I haven't gone to a web hug yet. I'm signing up for that cell reminder, cuz this year i am definitely going. Yes, everybody you get to meet the guy behind the 05 Vette avatar. C ya there!

I really wanted to go last year and then --long story made short-- completely missed it. Hopefully this year i'll have no practice matches at all even remotly close to noon. And that text message idea is ingenious.
The text-message thing sounds great.
What ever happened to the conga line?!?!:D
Brandon, whats the update on the cell phone number list? I've almost already forgotten about the list, so i'm bound to forget about going to the web hug, lol. :P

It's about 60% done. I barely have time to work on it in the next few days. Wednesday night, definitely. Should be ready by Thursday.

Looks like I finally get to attend a Webhug! The past two years I wasn't there on Thursday...but I certainly will be there this year!
Maybe this has been addressed but I didn't see it: does everyone ID themselves with a nametag or anything like that? As an example - I would hate to be standing next to/hugging/high-fiving OneAngryDwarf and not know it was him!

Kevin, if your standing next to me and dont know its me, and hugging me, we have bigger issues then nametags:) Cuz i'm pretty sure i hugged you a couple weeks ago after chicago! And you've known me for like 3 years now!
Nametags would be nice. Make your own maybe, be creative:) or maybe someone will just show up with a bunch of those "Hello my name is:" stickers and some sharpies!

Well the good news for me is that it wont conflict with the conferences and workshops I plan to attend, however it is during the same time as Andy Baker's Overall Robot Design workshop. See the lists of workshops here (http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2005/2005_cmp_conference_abstracts.htm)
I better just drop by the 45 pit if I want to meet the great Andy baker :]

Barry,
If I were so great, then I would not be suprised to realize that the 2005 Webhug and the presentation that Bill Beatty and I put on were scheduled at the same time. Now, I either need to convince Mike Martus to start the webhug early (or move it back 1 hour), skip the webhug, miss the first part of the presentation, or just clone myself.
Thanks for making me realize this conflict.
Btw, I like your umbrella hat. I have one too. (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/pictures.php?s=&action=single&picid=10692&direction=DESC&sort=date&perrow=4&trows=3&quiet=Verbose)
Yep, just come by the pit in Atlanta... I'll be around there some of the time.

Andy ... don't push it back an hour ... My presentation is at 1:30 :) ... Maybe we'll just work on that cloning machine
Yeah, I'm with Rich presenting at 1:30 - so don't push it back, PLEASE? :D
NEMO already took the 10am spot, before the Conference workshops begin... (good thinking, huh?)

I don't think with the amount of different activities going on that we will be able to find a time where we could get 100% attendance. It's unfortunate that Andy, Bill (and anybody here attending their conference) won't be able to attend, but if we move it we will probably mess up an equal amount of other peoples' schedules.
There's always next year, eh? :)

Last year ngreen did something awesome. He took a screencap of a post on CD that showed his avatar, who am i, and username, and made that into a nametag. It was really easy to know who he was with that! So...do it! XD
if anybody that is going to the webhug passes by the 1167 pit, just ask for joe.p and i will follow... knowing me, i will forget all about it

I believe Greg Ross did that also.
Is there an alternative place to gather just in case it rains?
I'm thinking that the area in mind is somewhat sheltered... But if I remember correctly, if you go up the escalator and into the building that housed the other convention last year, there was a large area just beyond the doors that could house us. (Can't check on map since FIRST website won't load).
the planned meeting area is the open grassy area where they had the car-tent and the huge FIRST banner... I don't think there is much there in the form of rain-protection, but i could be wrong. Either way, there is a huge amount of open area in the GWCC-C building... their website claims they could fit the titanic in one of the hallways. If you want to check building C out I recommend GWCC Virtual Tour (http://www.gwcc.com/eventplanners/vtour.html)
By the way... I already <3 the pit area on the 1st level.

Hmm. I wonder if I could get Internet access quick enough and make the text page reminder state any location changes. Hmmmmmm.

Thanks Sara.
Sadly, I won't be able to make the championship or the webhug this year. My team will be there but I will be enjoying myself here in the Czech Republic.
Oh, and if anyone is interested here is the only picture of my nametag I have access to. http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2053 It was created using mspaint and color printer. And worn using a pinned nametag holder aquired from some event.
Although, I like the "Hello, My Name Is" a lot too. We had a stack of them in our band room. I really think people would be a lot more friendly if everyone wore nametags.

We can get you a bright rain jacket that says follow me to the webhug
Alas, if someone sends me a text I get it several hours to 4 months later...don't ask.
I didn't know about this last year, but it sounds fun...I'd like to attend this year.

I'll be there, probably the only one from my team, but I'll see what happens.
With all the talk of people needing reminders or forgetting to go, is there any possibility that it could be announced in the pits and on the fields 15-20 minutes before the web-hug? Then everyone would hear about it, and more people might show up; for example if they haven't heard of it yet this year, but went last year and knew what it was.

Has anybody considered making a sheet that has the webhug info, and hanging it on one of the balconies? I look up there all the time...

Actually, no. His family was in a car accident, and thus he will not be able to attend Nationals as originally was planned. I was just inquiring to see if his tickets would still be valid considering the circumstances.

Yes, we can make an exception here. The Ritchies are still eligible, due to their circumstances.

Already done. We had not posted it in the forums so that Scott or Libby would not see it.
