View Full Version : Who do you think is the best bet to win the Chairman's Award at the Championship?
Everybody always talks about what robot is going to win the championship but no one ever brings up who they think will win the Chairman's award.
I mean all you get for that is admission to FIRSTs Hall of Fame, who cares about that?
So now we have 30 canidates who do you think is the best bet to achieve FIRST immortality the weekend of April 21st in Atlanta? And why?

What's that? 384? ;)
Nah, I highly doubt that we'll win, but just being up there with these guys is amazing!
My bet? Eh, well, I'd say 60, followed by 365, followed by 341. Of course, watch 79 win it and prove me wrong.....

I have to wait til the end of the week to post my official choice but there are a couple of odd facts to consider....
- First until last year FIRST had some sort of odd bias against team numbered over 200 when it came to the Chairman's award til the Cheesepoofs broke through. So will FIRST go past 300 this year? Will they make it past 1000?
-Secondly the last two Chairman's award winner were in the same division that we were in (Cybersonic in 2003 and the Poofs last year) so now we are like some sort of good luck charm for the Chairman's award. :D
Come next week I'll actually do some research and give more thought to who I think will be the newest FIRST Hall of Fame member.
Hey Koko Ed !
Should we say don't vote for yourself? That would make things more interesting. But, I don't want to make rules for your thread.
So what do you think?
If I were to vote for a team other than 341, I would say Team 236, TECHNO TICKS!! They run a great program.
Best of Luck to all of the 30 Chairman's Teams in Atlanta!!!

Nah if you want to vote for yourself I say go for it. As a matter of fact do so and give us CDers a good reason why your team is worthy of reconition. Everyone should know your stories.

I'm hoping for 365! They do a TON of work. I got to see their yearbook and talk with Melissa and Kyle about their submission. It's incredible, and they really deserve it.
My vote would be for 60. They have a truly amazing organization and were truly deserving of the award at our regional.

This may not be a great answer, because I do not know about all the teams and each of their extensive programs that make these teams so great. But if I were to pick who is going to win this year based on what I know, I think team 341 will join you in the hall of fame Koko. My second guess would be team 365.

I'm putting my bet on 67. The name is virtually synonymous with FIRST, they are the epitimy of FIRST. Their program is run efficiently and they just flood every part of the requirements. I know that there are a lot of teams shocked that they haven't gotten it yet.

Well not to toot our own horn, but I'm going to take Ed's advice and tell you why 11 deserves to win.
They started their program in 1997 with less than a dozen students, 1 teacher in the back of a wood shop. They barely had any tools, no heat, little experience, and even less support from the school/township.
Since then they have grown into one of the largest extracirricular activites in thier school. They have grown so large that their robotics program is the first class to fill up during registration, and they even helped pass a new school referrendum (sp?) to get the team a new lab to work in.
They also have started dozens of lego league teams, they hold the New Jersey state Lego League Tournament every year which hosts over 60 teams. Bill McGowan (their mentor) won Volunteer of the Year for the Mid Atlantic (Now New Jersey) Regional in 2003. They even hold camps every summer to teach kids FLL and Robovation. Team members go to elementary schools to get younger and younger kids excited about robotics, Also they have started a sister team (1302) and helped lead that team to success (finalest in Palmetto in 2004)
Aside from being fully immersed in FIRST they also give back to the community. They raised money for tsunami victims, and "adopted" troops overseas. They were asked by a local organization who helps people with disabilities to have the team make a device that would allows disabled people compete in sports. They do displays at schools and even did a demonstration at the local movie theater to spread the word of FIRST and at last word that demonstration may lead to several new teams' inceptions.
So that's just a piece of why I feel 11 should win, but with such competition like 111, 233, 365, 79, 48, 341, 694, 60, 342, 236...just to name a few it's going to be a nailbiter to the end.
I'm going with 236.
If they don't win after pulling off a threepeat at UTC, what more can they do?

This is the first anybody has actually given a reason why they should win the award. Good for you. I can throw out plenty of numbers and say they should win the award but the question is, WHY? Just saying that they run a great organization tells us nothing. it's all in the details. Tell me why 341 should win over 60, or 11 over 79. Please turn this tread into a toot your own horn thread, we can all learn and grow from all of the Chairman's award winners. It's not like you're saying that your robot is the best, you're giving all teams a blueprint for how to run a better organization.
Going back to Ed's point of breaking the 200 barrier, has anybody else noticed the number of 300 level teams winning at the regional level this year? 0-299 have 10 winners, 400+ have 12 winners, and the 300 level teams alone have 8. That's pretty good representation for the Rookie class of 2000.

I'm not going to sleep on 342, personally. They had honorable mention last year at the Championship, and they seem to have done a sa-weet job at reaching out this year. I don't remember the entire judges' citation from the awards--I've slept eleven hours since--but for a sampler, they added visually handicapped students to the team, and wrote software for them to be able to drive the robot. And there was plenty more that I've since forgotten.
That might be a South Carolina bias, but that's me.
1006 probably won't win, but we have a shot at it. We are a 3 year team with 2 rookie all star awards and 2 Chairman's Awards under our belt.

I'd say any of the teams that have won regional chairman's 3 years in a row.
236, 79, 341, and any others that I may be missing.

My vote is going for the Florida team .... The Navigators (team 79)
ITS KRUNCHTIME!!!
Every single regional Chairman's award winner has a shot at Nationals. Every single team has done a great job. Other than team 79, I (personal opinion) think Techno Ticks, followed by team 365 would win.
... But anything can happen.

My picks would be 79, 60, 111, or 341. All great teams with great programs that go way above and beyond most FIRST teams.
Hmm... Fantasy FIRST Chairmans Award League... :]
my pick is on team 65. ha ha ha. no for real i think we have a really good chance of winning it this year. but if we don't win i think that team 111 is going to win it.

I was wondering, are the teams that won the engineering inspiration award on the regional level the only teams eligible to win it on the champioship level?

I'm going to start off by recognizing and congratulating all thirty regional winners:
501, 340, 384, 1002, 393, 842, 79, 65, 1014, 931, 236, 957, 1108, 341, 503, 11, 358, 48, 233, 111, 694, 365, 368, 1006, 1241, 60, 118, 342, 812, 67
The judges in Atlanta will have a most difficult job, but truly they cannot make a bad choice from a group of such inspiring role models. Because I represent PA, more specifically the Philadelphia area, my heart is with our hometown heroes 341 and 365 (in no particular order guys :)). However, over the years I have also become a huge fan of many of these programs on the list. In the end, we will all be winners because these 30 programs will keep raising the bar (along with our Hall of Famers and former Regional CA winners) to strengthen all of FIRST and move us toward our shared vision of a changed culture.
Good luck everybody :)

I personally think that 342 will be able to win the Chairmans Award at Nationals this year. Like Billfred said, that had done a great job at reaching out. They always have a great animation showing what FIRST is about. Team 342 must be continually inspiring people because last year they won the Chairmans Award at Palmetto also. To me personally i think they are a great role model team and exemplify the true meaning of FIRST. :)
It'd be wrong if i didn't think my own team was going to win the national Chairman's Award. Team 118 has been doing an extreme amount of work since it's creation years ago. We've won the Lone Star Regional Chairman's award twice now, once in 2003 and again this year in 2005. The Robonauts won the judges award in 2003 at the national level commending the work we do with younger students, and based on the comments we received back from the judges, we really upped our progress since then. Over the years some of the major points of the things we've done are but not limited to:
-Creating the EARLY(Engineering And Robotics Learned Young) robotics competition for k-5 . link (http://www.earlyrobotics.org)
-Spreading EARLY across the US and beyond (over 100 teams in South Africa)
-Designing EARLY challenges each semester and running Tournament
-Mentoring 14 FLL(FIRST Lego League) teams every year
-Starting new FLL teams across Houston
-Organizing and Helping with National FLL Invitational at FIRST Championship in Houston in 2003
-Planning/Organizing/Hosting/Running South Texas FLL Regional (over 70 teams)
-Mentoring BEST (Boosting Engineering Science and Technology) teams
-Volunteering at BEST Kickoff, Practice day, and Competition
-Mentoring Botball team
-Volunteering at Botball Competition and Kickoff.
-Along with help from Houston Area Schools created HREP(Houston Robotics Education Program). link (http://www.houstonrobotics.org)
-Started and Mentored many FIRST teams over the years in many places.
-Robonauts Alumni have gone on to start many teams and mentor
-Acquired funding for 9 teams this year alone through Houston Robotics grants
-Shared work facility, along with tools, mentors, and students, to another team for last 2 years.
-Promoted HREP to and adopted HREP in other communities
-Promoted Robotics Education, FIRST, and HREP at an uncountable number of community events over the years. (World Space Conference, Offshore Technology Convention, ASME Crawfish Boil, SECME Competitions, JSC Visitor Center Demos, NASA Bring your Kid to work day, NASA Open house days, Car washes at the donut shop...)
-Ran Summer Workshops for teaching teachers about FLL and EARLY
-Gave out grants through Houston Robotics for adding Lego Simple Machine kits into Elementary school's Curriculum.
-... the list goes on, but the time i have right now doesn't so that will have to do for now.
The robonauts really bust their butts year round, and i feel that they really do enough outreach year round to educate the children in the Houston Community to FIRST and Robotics Education that deserve the Chairman's Award.
My vote personally, based purely upon what knowledge I have of them, is on 60 or 365. I would like to see 812 be at least a runner-up though, as they have developed an amazing program in a compartively short span of time.
I was wondering, are the teams that won the engineering inspiration award on the regional level the only teams eligible to win it on the champioship level?
I highly doubt that teams that only won an engineering inspiration award at regionals can only win it at nationals, however, this is not based on any facts. Even though Engineering Inspiration does qualify a team to go to championship, it's not as high of a priority to find funding for the championship because it doesn't mean you're up for any kind of award. Based from experience, our team had no idea we had a shot at winning engineering inspiration, it came as a big surprise last year. We went to Championships last year because of the tier system and registering before hand. We would have most likely not gone to Championships if we had not registered before.

I so agree with that! Its amazing to hear of all the things that FIRST does for people. I proud of all the Chairman's winners. I'm proud that my team lives FIRST and that I feel like I'm home every time I'm with my team.
Good luck to all and congrats to the winner!

Good Luck to all the teams (including mine) for the National Chariman's Award...
I believe that teams that have won Chairman more then once would have a better chance...and many are better then mine...
Anyone has a chance
Go 694......
Just to remind people/teams!
There is a sticky-post in the Chairmans Award Forums about posting your Chairmans submissions in the CD-white pages.
It would be awsome if more 2005 regional winners would post. [Only 3 teams so far] Then other non-regional winner teams would have a good array of regional winner team submissions to look at.

I believe that teams that have won Chairman more then once would have a better chance...
True, but also consider that there are teams on this list who were "Chairman's Award Finalists" before the Regional Chairman's Award came out a few years ago.
Other than that added point of reference, there are too many teams to pick a favorite. I presume that most of these teams will deserve the Championship Chairman's Award, but only one can win.
Good job to all Chairman's Award Regional winners and good luck to you all in Atlanta.

I don't really know of most of the teams that worked hard and were able to get the award on a regional level. However I know that 341 will be a strong contender for the award due to their great program.

well, i dont want to toot my own horn or anything (although that is now allowed in this thread, i have modesty issues ;)) but first of all, i want to wish all the teams elidgible for winning the Chairman's Award at The Championship Event the best of luck. we are all winners, and even if 29 of us dont make it to the Hall of Fame, we should not be discoraged, because since we have come this far, that means we truly do exemplify the true meaning of FIRST, and we should be proud of our accomplishments and continually strive to do better.
that being said, wow, do we have some competition.
personally, i dont really think 233 is going to win Chairman's this year at this level (next year may be better), although, dont get me wrong, that would make me the happiest person in Atlanta for that moment in time. considering i started crying when we won chairman's at the regional level at Denver (i am the Project Manager for the Chairman's Award Group on my team and personally put my heart and soul into perfecting our essay and presentation for 2 years in a row), i'd probably faint or just end up crying again. ANYWAYS, i might as well explain what 233 has to offer on the basis of the criteria for the Chairman's Award, and if i can find where i saved our essay on my computer, i'll post it on the White Papers sometime within the next week. (btw, this info is all just off the top of my head, so i might have missed over something...)
Personal Impact of FIRST Students involved with our team get involved in Careers they had never even considered as a result of their participation on the team. My brother, for example, considered a career in Aviation before he joined FIRST, but now, four years later, he is a Mechanical Engineering Major at FIT. The members of our team also learn valuable Tech Skills, ranging from how to use a hammer, to how to design using the computer program Pro-E, to the actual fabrication of the field and the robot, as well as valuable animation, programming, and electrical skills, taught by our wonderful mentors, most of them being NASA engineers. Being on the team builds self-confidence and leadership skills, especially for those involved in Project Management. i know from a personal standpoint, i used to be absolutely horrible at time management, but being put in several leadership positions over the past two years has helped me gain valuable leadership skills that i will continue to use for the rest of my life. (thank you FIRST!) Also, being a part of the team has given students and teachers/mentors alike new motivation in their lives. It gives students the motivation to study and do well in school, since we have a GPA requirement to be a part of the team, and it also sparks the interest of teachers and mentors by giving them something new, fun, and challenging to do. Lifelong friendships are a result of working year-round with teammates and mentors on team--the experience is lifechanging. An alumni of the team, Denny Caldwell for example, made grades ironically representative of what many of his teachers thought he had: A-D-D-A-D-D-D, the A's being in Math and Science, and the D's in all of the other subjects that did not quite strike his interest. in a single semester after joining the team, Denny doubled his GPA, and moved on to have a successful carreer in life, and come back to team 233 as a mentor!
Community Impact of FIRST Our team is involved with a lot of community service--for several years we have worked with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for the homeless, and just this past year, when Nature was so greatful as to hit our area with FOUR hurricanes, we all got together and did hurricane cleanups between and after hurricanes, cleaning up debris on what was left of the beach at the time and on the little islands in the river separating our schools. Also, year-round we are doing Robot Demos at Schools, Organizations, and places like that--it has even gotten to the point that instead of us contacting a venue asking if we could demo our robot and promote awarness FIRST, the venues themselves are contacting us first, asking if we could please bring the robot and tell the community more about this wonderful thing called FIRST robotics! Just last week i was at a demo at the KSC All-Americal Picnic/Return to Flight Rally. the robot was a hit! we allowed kids and adults alike to drive the robot and attempt to stack three tetras on top of one another as we spoke about FRC and FLL. (i even ended up becoming a role-model of sorts for a few of the girls who showed up there, and exploited the opportunity to urge the girls to be sure to study hard in math and science in school... heehee) We have even made an Activity Book that we bring to hand out to kids at demos, so that the children may have something more tangible than simply the memory of how cool the robot was. the activity/coloring ABC book consists of mazes and connect the dots, wordsearches and coloring pages, as well as explaining the mission of FIRST and telling a little about our team.
We also are very involved in FIRST Lego League. this year alone we started and mentored 28 local teams in our county! we founded the 1st Sunshine State FLL Tournament, and we continue to host it at FIT, having our team members volunteer to actually run the tournament, participating in every aspect, from refereeing to crowd control and everything inbetween. This year (the 4th year we've hosted the tournament) we had 54 teams from all over Florida and Jamaica come and participate at the tournament! (i was a ref there, and trust me, we were at maximum capacity +1)
We have started two other FRC teams (M.I. Tide, which won the Peachtree Regional this year, and the Bionic Tigers, which won the UCF Regional this year with us) and they, along with The Children of the Swamp and Team Voltage make up the Brevard Alliance, where we share our funds, fundraisers, and information. We also mentor several teams across the globe. We formed the Trans-Atlantic Alliance last year as we kept in touch with and mentored the British team, but had to upgrade it to the Intercontinental Partnership this year, as we also mentor a team in Israel and in Puerto Rico. We mentored team Harmony (1604) this past year, as well as another team in Colorado, and as long as we're talking about westward expansion, we already have an alliance with a team from Hawaii set up for next year. :)
Team Communications Our team communicates with each other mainly through e-mail blasts, but we also communicate with our website, which has a calendar of events, letting us know the dates and times of various different functions of the team, from demos to team parties to fundraisers. there is a members-only Hours Page that informs the team members of how many hours they have dedicated to the team, as well as how many fundraisers and community service hours they have dedicatied. There is also a survey that team members take at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year, to see how team members have changed in regards to career preferences and interest in school and things of that nature throughout their experience with FIRST robotics. We also use an advanced scouting system (consisting of notecards and pens and paper, but is soon to be upgraded to Palm Pilots and wi-fi.. i dont know all the technicalities, sorry! i'll try to get them if you're more interested though... send me a PM and i'll try to get the details for you) that everyone is involved with. At the beginning of the competition season, the entire team gets together and watches a webcast together and practices scouting, to ensure that we are all on the same level in understanding of the game and its rules and how to scout in the same manner. We use FileMaker Pro and create Team Daciees (i KNOW thats spelled wrong.. i'm sorry my spelling is horrific) with a picture of the team's robots and its statistics for use while scouting.
Rockledge High even has its own Technology Curriculum (unfortunately i do not attend rockledge and cannot really speak from experience about the awesomeness of the class). It is a year-long class that is visited by teachers and engineers alike who speak of their professions in relation to technology and robotics. the class teaches topics such as Pnematics, Bridge Design & Construction, Pro-E Software, Computer Programming, Electronics, Electrical Design, Controls, Mechanical Design, and much more. (i seriously wish they had this class at my school. i barely know anything about any of those topics...)
Partnerships As mentioned above, we have partnerships with other teams across the globe in alliances such as the Brevard Alliance and the Intercontinetal Partnership (formally known as the Trans-Atlantic Alliance), and we are also a part of the South Florida Chapter of the RoboChicks Union (RCU), working to promote Women/Girls in science and technology. we also have wonderful partnerships with our sponosors (such as NASA KSC, United Space Alliance, and other Local Sponsors) who get so involved in what we do as a team, that they even send us Mentors to help us out. our partnerships with our mentors is phenominal--they are like family to us. we a blessed to have NASA Engineers, Technicians, and Programmers (the same people who work on the Orbiter and send the Space Shuttle into space!! XD), as well as teachers and rediculously awesome people like Kit Gerhart, as mentors.
How We're a Role Model The Space Coast FIRST Team (aka The PINK Team) #233 is a role model for other FIRST teams in many ways. Most Apparently it would be because of our flamboyant SPIRIT! (come on, how hard is it to miss 73 people dressed in pink?) Also, we love to help other teams in need of a helping hand in a crisis. on several occasions our wonderful Pit Crew has shown exempliary Gracious Professionalism in aiding teams in need. We help spread the word of FIRST through demos and such, and we help other teams by sharing funds, sharing our sponsors, and even sharing our mentors! our scouting techniques took forever to perfect, and we are always willing to help teams develop their own scouting methods to best suit their own needs, and of course, our robots are always stellar. we have a robotics class at one of the schools which teaches students about various aspects of Robotics in regards to science and technology, and while working with the RCU, we promote Women in Technology. of the four people in our Pit Crew, Three of them are Women, and they really know their stuff. our Tool-Girl, Shaara, is only a freshman, but she knows more that most senior boys on the team when it comes to the robot! This summer we will be hosting a Girl's Robotics Summer Camp for a week in conjunction with the Society of Women Engineers.
this is our 7th year as a team, and we have accomplished much in that time. here is an abridged version of the Competative Awards we have recieved in that time:
1999 Rookie: Kennedy
2000 Photogenic: Kennedy; Driving Technology: New England & World
2001 DCX Spirit: Kennedy; Finalist, GM Design: Philly; QF: World
2002 Quality, Incredible Play: Canada; Archemedies Champ, Leadership in Controls, Incredible Play: World
2003 Finalist, GM Design, Imagry: Central Florida; Winner, Imagry: Pacific Northwest
2004 Finalist, Imagry: Central Florida; Winner, Leadership in Controls: NYC; QF World
2005 Winner, Leadership in Control (they changed the name..idr right now): Central Florida; Winner, Imagry, Website, Chairman's: Denver
i think thats it for the most part, with out going way too much into detail... i hope i didnt miss or skip over anything. :)
Once again, i wish the best of luck to 11, 48, 60, 65, 67, 79, 111, 118, 236, 340, 341, 342, 358, 365, 368, 384, 393, 501, 503, 694, 812, 842, 931, 957, 1002, 1006, 1014, 1108, 1241!

So that's just a piece of why I feel 11 should win, but with such competition like 111, 233, 365, 79, 48, 341, 694, 60, 342, 236...just to name a few it's going to be a nailbiter to the end.
Well, I don't have a whole slew of reasons, but I can tell you 1676 is for 11 :)

Thanks 1676, we're looking forward to a great time at nats with you guys...
I think this year is possibly the most competitive it has ever been for national charimans award. There are SOO MANY good teams, theres no point in even trying to list them because you'll just end up with a list of 29 teams. Representing team 11 I would like to wish luck to all the other teams. I hope that we set a high example for other teams to follow and in time will show to doubters that FIRST truly isnt about building robots, but allowing yourself to reach higher and farther than you ever could.
GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE FROM TEAM 11 (MORT)

Hey Koko Ed !
Should we say don't vote for yourself? That would make things more interesting. But, I don't want to make rules for your thread.
Best of Luck to all of the 30 Chairman's Teams in Atlanta!!!

Good luck to all teams, especially team 341, you guys have a great team and an awesome chairmans entry.
i think that my team...team 65 will win chairmans this year.
there is many reasons that i think that. one is because we have been a great team throughout the years despite the lack of school recognition and support. we have been in running for this chairmans award for many years now. 2001 we were national finalists, 2003 we won in great lakes and were very very close to winning it at nationals. 2004 we were very very close to winning it at great lakes again. and we won it this year at great lakes. every year we help out at the silver dome with concessions for the suburban youth league football. we are organizing a Lego league of our own called PLLAY. this Lego league is for middle schools in Pontiac. we are supporting a solider over in Iraq right now. we are also designing and soon will be making a robot that will help our police force with hostage situations or bomb scares. there are many more reasons that i think that we will win it this year. so don't for get about team 65. we will be a great contender to win chairmans this year.

48, 79, and 365 in my eyes both have a great shot at it, they all done a great job at showing what they do for the community. But don't discount MORT (11) It will be a very close race.
it does seem that your leaning towards the smaller teams, but forget the 694 ye not. They have done a hell of a lot in the community, and when we heard about it at nyc, it kinda pleasently suprised me, as they had done so much. It kinda put what we thought was a good entry to shame, but i wish them luck.

341? Go 340! You guys rock!
The judges are going to have a tough time on Friday. Wish I knew more about some of these teams, but maybe ***broken record**** they will consider posting their entries in the white papers so we all can learn from them!
I talked to FIRST last year about posting all these entries on the FIRST site, but it got lost in the shuffle. Maybe this year...
Kudos to the teams that have already done this.
Good luck to you all.
I have to wait til the end of the week to post my official choice but there are a couple of odd facts to consider....
Hey Koko Ed!
Just curious who you thought was going to get it.
Congratulations once again to Team 67!!
Good luck to all in the off season!

I thought 118 was going to get it. I never thoguht 67 was going to ge it especially after they won it all. FIRST had just never done that before (it makes them uncomfotable if one team gets all the big prizes but at least they're getting over it. If you're deserving, you're deserving.)
Now if FIRST could only get over that low number bias.

But the Chairman's Award was decided before the championship match took place!
Listening to the award presentation just inspires me to work that much harder this year!

I am confident that the highest team number of a Championship chairmans winning team will increase next year at least into the 300's ;).

I dont think ther was a way for them to change who was going to win after Friday... Early on Saturday (looking back, we were foolish not to realize what this meant) one of the FIRST Ambassitor was hanging around our pits with a video camera asking questions like "What does FIRST mean to you?" and "How has being on the team changed you?".... obviously questions that are going to go in our video...
As for the 'low number bias', I dont think thats a good way to think about it. I know it may sound harsh or ungracious, but wouldn't give the Chairmans award to, say, a 3 year team as opposed to a 9 year team be like giving a "Lifetime Achievement" award to an intern? Im not saying that new teams dont do great things for FIRST (heck, they are FIRST), but the CA is kinda like senor award - wherein most senior teams have given the most back to FIRST.
I am not sure it all completely low number teams. My team got honorable mention last number and w are a 1000+ team. We got nothing this year but are definetly looking to improve all summer long and during the school year.
Is FIRST more interested in teams that go for multi state outreach. We are really trying to get in touch with some alabama teams because they are really close to us yet they have very few teams. The only 1 I can think of is 538 ARAB HS

Oh Lord someone help me, I'm agreeing with Davis...
I don't think that it's a lower number bias for Chairman's as much as the lower teams have been in the competition for longer and obviously have had more of an opportunity to become involved in their communities and show sustained partnerships between their team and all aspects of their community. It's not that they only like low numbers, but more that the lower numbered teams have had more of a chance to do what the Chairman's Award honors.

Yeah but a team like 1114 has done an awful lot for NiagraFIRST. To say that their work is not " good enough" becasue their only three years old seems cruel.
I bust chops on the low number bias but I sure hope it's just a myth because if it isn't then it would hurt the integrity of the Cahirman's award. Why should teams turn it in if they're not going to be seriously considered because of their number? This is actually not a good thing.
If there is a low number bias at championships, that is able to be discussed. As far as for a regional level, there is not a bias, or at least not that I can tell. There are at least two 1000+ teams I know that have won two regional chairman's awards in only three years of existence.
As long as the regional are unbiased, the championships will eventually go to a higher numbered team. Hopefully my team will be one of the first to break the 300 barrier. But seriously look at the list of chairman's finalist. Most all of these are elite programs regardless of numbers. I'm proud to be part of the group even without the trophy.

One of those two teams is 1002. After winning first runner up last year we came in this year with high hopes. We definately thought we would get at least a runner- up award. When they went through those and we weren't named, the tension mounted. You can imagine our dissappointment when the winner was announced. In retrospect I think we just didn't do enough. The winner is a team that did a ton and ultimately deserved their award. In fact, the only bad thing I can think of about that team was a probation issued in a preseason competition. Basically they were accused with sufficient evidence of having their robot built (by a sponsor). Since that doesn't matter at actual first, congratulations on both their awards, they have a great program. We are coming in next year to try and win our third chairman's at the peachtree regional in four years and try again at nationals. We have more funding this year and will be working hard to get a big sponsor. Hopefully we can achieve our goals. Anyone at nationals should remember us as the team with the glowsticks. Good luck to everyone next year.

Oh that's most certainly not what I was trying to say. I apologize if it came out that way. What I'm saying is that obviously older teams (which have smaller numbers) have had more time to create more of the partnerships and continue them. Team 1114 has done some amazing things (trust me, when Karthik first told me, he left me with my mouth gaping open) and that's undenyable. The Chairman's Award places significant focus on sustained efforts which obviously give the older teams a greater advantage. I have no problem with fantastic new teams being recognized, I'm just stating why more than likely, the low number thing has stuck.

Feel that? the Earth just stopped turning! :yikes:
In reply to the past few posts... what you have to understand about getting such a prestigious (sp?) award as the national (heck, even regional) CA is that they can only give it to 1 team per year. Now, your team could do amazing things for 3 years but there will almost always be a team thats been in it for longer doing similar things.
Not getting an award isn't the same as being shunned or put down. It just means that its not your turn to be recognized yet. Its not that your efforts aren't appriciated, its just that the teams that have been in the game fore longer have done more. Eventually everything will catch up and teams in the 1k's will be winning left and right.

Interesting example. Would you happen to know who won at both events 1114 went to this year? Here's a hint, each has 4 digits in their team number.

Thank you for the kind words Ed.
Before we get drawn into a battle about the magnitude of team numbers, let me clear something up. Team 1114 submitted for the Chairman's Award at the Waterloo Regional. The winner at this event was Team 1006, who have been around for the exact same amount of time as us. There was definitely no "Team Number Bias" involved.

As far as winning the Championship and winning Chairman's, these are two separate awards controlled by two separate sets of people. Once the judges make their decision on the Chairman's Award winner (I'm guessing this would happen on Saturday morning sometime), there's no changing it regardless of who wins on the field of play. While it makes sense to spread the awards around to as many deserving teams as possible, it does not make sense to create a contingency plan for FIRST's highest honor, in case someone wins the Championship on the field.
I may be way out on a limb here, but I don't think "team number bias" has any part in this discussion at all. A team that has been around longer AND that has exhibited Chairman's Award qualities obviously has an advantage over a newer team that exhibits those same qualities, but hasn't been doing it as long. This DOESN'T mean that the Chairman's Award is being given to teams simply because they're older. A review of the Chairman's Award section in the manual clearly states (in 9.2.2), "...the Chairman’s Award recognizes sustained excellence and impact." It would stand to reason that more veteran teams would fair better in this area, but it's also not a surprise that some four-digit teams are winning at the regional level due to the depth of their outreach and culture-transforming efforts.
Also know that Championship Winners have not gone in numerical order. For instance, Team 67 won AFTER 175, 103, and 254 even though 67 has been around longer. Further evidence exists when you consider 111 as one of thirty candidates in 2005, yet it was 118, 341, and 365 that impressed the judges enough to win honorable mention.
All of this brings me to the meat of what I want to say. Wanting to win a Chairman's Award is a fine external motivator. If that is your ONLY motivation for reaching out, building community, and preparing an entry then it becomes easy to say, "Why bother, we can't win anyway because of ... (plug in your favorite criticism of the Chairman's Award here)."
Now why prepare an entry, even in your Rookie Year?
-It's a great way to document achievement and growth.
-These documents and materials are great ways to promote your team in your community and foster growth in a number of ways.
-They are roadmaps for the future
-The interview process is a valuable experience for students
-The journey is the reward, remember? Read your Chairman's entry from this year and compare it to last year, the year before, and so on. Look at the growth and the culture shift and the changed lives. Isn't that why we do this? Am I missing something?

I love what Rich says here. Although it is no secret that we would love to win Chairman's, you have to keep it all in perspective. When we take on new projects, they have to pass the "FUN TEST". Because if they aren't fun or helpful to others, we are simply not doing it.
Saturday morning in Atlanta, I had my team stop and think about all of the lives they have changed and growth they have experienced over the past year. This daily experience is what has true meaning. That is the internal motivator .
This is what makes FIRST people so amazing, they are always looking to grow, learn and help others. You could never get anyone to work this hard for just a trophy.
Best of luck to all in the off-season!!!
