I guess John and Chris shouldn't have bet our team that they would shave their heads if we medaled at 2 regionals! :)
Take a look at pictures of the whole event here:
http://www.team229.org/photo/57/
P.S. I think Joel is even smiling in one of them!!!
Hey!
Bald is a good look!

Well, it'll grow back! Just make sure you wear suntan lotion on your head in Atlanta! ;)

God your Grandmother must be proud. Or only your grandmother could be proud.
It's most definately time to start the "There's No [expletive deleted] Way I'm JVN" Club.

Amanda, I'm that old -- didn't think you were! Did you see it in syndication?
(Bull was always my favorite among characters who got very few lines.)
I guess this means that I can now say that instead of the dumbest, I made only the SECOND DUMBEST bet for this competition season!

It's always nice to see people following in the footsteps...of Elgin. ;)

You guys are braver than I. I am thinking "why would anyone just shave their head like that? It might not grow back and then where will you be?" Evolution can be cruel sometimes. Of course, as a child of the sixties, hair was once important and I wouldn't part with it on a bet. (I can't believe I said that, it must be really late.)
I guess I should chime in and tell the back story to this whole thing. It all started when I was studying one night and John came in and said, "Chris we should promise the team we'll shave our heads if we medal at two regionals as motivation for the team to do well," and I was very resistant to the idea. However he kept bugging me, and finally I did some mental math (I've been in FIRST for 6 years won a medal once) so it seemed like a pretty safe bet. So I agreed to it just to get him to leave me alone.
Next thing I knew the bet was sent out in an email to the whole team, I still wasn't that nervous. Then once the team silvered at FLR they started to get into. I kept hearing things like "one more" from everyone, and as you can see from the pictures even Joel got into it calling first dibs on my head if we got another medal.
The rest as they say is history. It was definately good for team, I was surprised by how into it everyone got. The chance to see both JVN and I bald was an amazing motivational tactic. But it was well worth it we had a great team this year, an amazing season, and I for one know that I'm going to miss everyone who won't be back next year both college and high school.
The best quote of the night was when John was asked if he had any last words, he looked at the sky and said, “Please God let it grow back."
Ahh the things we do for FIRST.
See you all in Atlanta,
Chris C.

Yeah Chris it really was good motivation for us.
(Anyone else notice the difference in hair between John and Chris?? (http://www.team229.org/photo/single/3208)) In the end they were eager to get a couple of us High schoolers up in the chairs for next year. Joel already called first dibs on my head. It was a lot of fun and well worth it. John's ending line, “Please God let it grow back." Chris was definitely right, best line of the night, next to everyone noticing just how much he looked like Pee-Wee Herman. ;)

They're everywhere...
Excellent Sixth Sense (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167404/) reference
Jay Trzaskos decides to tell ChiefDelphi.com his secret:
Jay Trzaskos: I see bald people...
ChiefDelphi.com: At FIRST competitions?
Jay Trzaskos shakes his head
ChiefDelphi.com: In every day life?
Jay Trzaskos nods
ChiefDelphi.com: Bald actors like Ving Rhames & Patrick Stewart?
Jay Trzaskos shakes his head again stronger this time
Jay Trzaskos: ...They're mentors... ...they don't look good without hair... ...they didn't think they'd loose the bet!
ChiefDelphi.com: How often do you see them?
Jay Trzaskos: all the time, (pause) they're everywhere...

That is too funny! I thought about making that kind of a bet with my team... I'm 99.9% sure I would win... but when it comes down to it, that .1% is still way too much of a risk for me... My co-workers measured my hair recently (don't ask, I have odd-ball co-workers) and it's just about 2 feet long, so that's a lot to lose!
Even though they are now bald, I think those two won a lot more with that bet than they lost.

This is hilarious.
At the same time, it is noble of Chris and John to do this. Their dedication to their team is honorable. My hat goes off to them. (snicker, snicker)

Wow congradulations you managed to get Joel to smile, that is quite the accomplishment. And we had a mentor bet his hair on the odds that we would take gold at Chesapeake alone. Well one meeting his hair too came off....... Now to just find a picture.

Yeah, we figured out at the Las Vegas Regional that if you put Andy head-to-head with Tony Norman, you would get a Heidi Foster (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/pictures.php?action=single&picid=5964).
Wow, now that I think about that, I am not sure which of them should be most offended by that comparison...

Lisa from Rage's ALCS bet (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/pictures.php?s=&action=single&picid=10429&direction=DESC&sort=date&perrow=4&trows=10&quiet=Verbose), without a doubt ....or would that be considered last season?

New game - If you had to declare that you were a blood relative of one or the other would it be:
1. The shaven JVN
-OR-
2. The esteemed Mr. Baker with the glasses and the umbrella hat???
I don't know who I'd pick, but I have a ninth grade niece. If I could get you two to pick her up from a school dance and proclaim in front of her entire peer group that, "We're uncle Rich's friends. Does anyone else need a ride?" ... that would be perfect :)

Personally, I think that would be HYSTERICAL. I would love for that to happen, but mabye that's only because I appreciate them as members rather than folks with a bit too much insanity. Then again, I'm a FIRSTer, and we're all insane.
Not to threadjack, but what is the new second-dumbest bet for this season?
Possibly the 2 bets he made in Maryland during the Chesapeake regional? One was a steak dinner for beating the High score, which was done on Friday, then Saturday morning he made a bet that every team on the alliance that beat the 120 that was set would get 2 boxes of KK donuts in Atlanta, well later that day the 173-1027-53 alliance got a 121 which was the new high score.
And Jess yea Lisa's bet with Grady was awesome nothing like forcing a Yankees fan to wear a Red Sox hat to all FIRST events!!!

finally I did some mental math (I've been in FIRST for 6 years won a medal once) so it seemed like a pretty safe bet. So I agreed to it just to get him to leave me alone.

In 2003 I did the same math and I too paid the piper. At least yours was done only with your team instead of in front of everyone at WMR. I may not have had my head shaved but I lost as much hair as you and way more than John. Now I get back at my team by coloring my hair. If yours grows back you could do something similar but I really feel for John as I believe that he will now always have the Yule Brenner look. :p
John and Chris were real good sports about this whole thing. I had actually totally forgotten about the bet thing until I received a meeting notice that declared that a portion of the meeting would be dedicated to shaving our friends.
I did offer them wax, and someone did suggest shellac if that didn't work....
