Ok...here's the question:

Gals:

What's the most B]romantic[/B] thing a guy can do on a first date, any date, in general. It can be as simple as holding a door open (;) ) or as elaborate as flowers or candlelight.

Melissa Nute

Um...the most romantic thing on a first date....
being on time...
having the look of aww when she comes to the door..
flowers can work...
walking her to the door and just giving her a kiss on the cheek (shows us you do actually have some values...)

Judy

Melissa's got it right... but one thing about flowers, if you really want to impress me, don't just give me any old flower, if you give me one of my faves, I'll probably melt! hehe...

well judy, i can't admit to knowing what those look like, but they sound cool :) i guess us guys can just ask the girl what they like, but here's a quick question just in case: can you go wrong with a rose? would you think it's too unoriginal, or would you appreciate the thought?

Personally, I think roses are way too common and most guys figure they can just get a rose and it'll all be good... now if it's another colour.. that's a different thing.. I mean personally I think blue and black roses are really cool!

I agree with black roses...I love those things...A friend got me one of Valentine's day since she knew I like them, and i was one of the happiest people in the world....however people at my school thought I was crazy for that....

Judy

Oh and if you know the meaning of the colours, that's even cooler! Like I think black means undying love... pink or white(can't remember, been a while) is friendship, etc. If you work that out, it means even more.

I have always been a fan of chocolate...

I remember for one first date I brought a chocolate rose...It went over very well. That a fluke? or am I on to something?

Judy
03-05-2002, 23:01
I'm not a chocolate person, but I guess most girls are.... that seems like a sweet( oh man I just realized how corny that must sound) idea.

You know, I feel sorry for you poor guys, I really do. Run now while you still have the chance! The flower and candy thing is never a sure thing. On holidays, it's clichéd, for no special reason, it's suspicious. But then, maybe I'm too cynical. And I'm most likely too weird, the most romantic gift I ever received was a keychain mace from a boyfriend in college who was worried about the neighborhood I lived in.

I personally think flowers, chocolate, stuffed animals, and jewelry are boring, but statistics show me that I'm a minority in that belief so my advice is most likely useless and should be discarded.

Poor guys.

chocolate = good
flowers= better
good manners = best

I remeber the first time I got flowers on a date, it was the sweetest thing ever, I had a conversation with the guy the first tiem we met a couple months before about how I had never gotten flowers from any guy, so when he finally got the nerves to as me on a date 2 months later he knocked on my door, met my parents and gave me a single rose and hugged me as he told me not to ever say I'd never gotten flowers from a guy :) It was so cute :)

how about poetry?

or comparing the sparkle in her eyes to the pale luminesense of the full moonlight, or the way her hair falls around her like a waterfall, glistening with a heavenly beauty, or her skin, the color and softness of the finest silk?

Or maybe that's date #2:D

Melissa Nute

With poetry, make sure it is original...I personally hate it when a guy gives/reads me a poem his friend wrote or from some famous author...it isn't true to the heart then...also don't go overboard with comparing her to stuff...I find it a bit annoying after a while...

Flowers= Ummm...OK

Chocolate= YES! YES! (least for me, I LOVE CHOCOLATE) :D

Poetry= Ummm...If she's into it, sure, but for a lot I think we'd think your trying to hard

Good Manners= ABSOLUTELY, I won't even talk to you if you don't have some sense of manners.

:D :D :D

Well, I guess there are two of us that think this. I agree candy, and flowers and stuff like that is getting a bit dull.

So what then do people like us want? Well, stuff that we personally like, obviously if you are going to the trouble to get us something, you know us well enough to know some of our interests.

To Settle to Rose Meanings once and for all....
Black Roses signify undying love or death
Coral Rose conveys desire
Lavender Roses symbolize love at first sight and enhancement
Orange Roses indicate enthusiasm, desire and fascination
Pink (Deep) says Thank You
Pink (Light) Rose conveys admiration, gentleness, grace, gladness, joy and sweetness
Pink Rose carry the message of happiness, gracefulness and gentleness
Red Roses symbolize sincere Love, Respect, Courage & Passion
Red (Dark) Rose reveals unconscious beauty
Red (Single) means "I Love You"
Red & White Roses together signify unity
Single Rose in any color expresses simplicity and gratitude
White Roses express Purity/heavenly, secrecy, silence, innocence and charm
White (Bridal) Rose symbolizes a happy love
Yellow Roses indicate joy, gladness, friendship and "I Care"
Yellow Rose with Red Tip indicates friendship falling in Love

Ben Mitchell
04-05-2002, 22:40
I'll take one of each, please!:D
(minus the bridal one, of course)

Would a bouquet of one of each be pretty, do you think?:D
(minus the bridal one, of course)

"Ones that aren't corny"....That really helps melissa ;) lol

...and now that I know what all those rose colours mean, I just need to find a store that would have tha appropreate colour for a first date...

BTW...What colour would work for a first date? I would think something not too strong (like black)...But not something weak and common (like red)...

I'll have to agree with you on this one. On Thursday night of the Nationals weekend a few friends of mine and I went to FSPA (Florida Schoolastic Press Association) Convention being held like 10 min from EPCOT where there are tons of girls from TV Production classes and Yearbook and Newspaper. I brought my camera along (Canon XL1 - very pro lookin) and even with all the other cameras there we ended picking up like 20 + girls. Cameras are exactly the way to go! Girls go nuts over em! So after this we had to bring it out during Nat'l. You may remember a few guys walking around through the pits and stuff asking if you had seen our "beachball" or if you were from Tennessee... I think that corny pick up lines plus a camera deffinitely nice way to go.

Harrison
05-05-2002, 00:17
How about (with a cam of course):

"Hello, we're documenting the FIRST competition for our school (or maybe local TV channel if ur feeling lucky) and we want to get to know people from other teams, and other parts of the country. Can you tell us where you're from, and a bit about yourself"...cam goes off...u thank her, and then talk to her for a while...

OR, you could always just go up to a girl and talk to them?

What I mean by not corny is don't be sterotypical...girls usually don't like that..be original...

I think a light pink rose or a yellow would work well for a first date...

Boys and video cameras usually don't work for me...I rather juts have the guy come up and talk to me without the camera.

its interesting how definitions of roses shifted.

from what I remember, deep red stands for bashful shame, and yellow stands for a decrease in love, or for jealousy. White rose can mean all of the definitions you stated, but also can stand for I am worthy of you. A red rosebud can mean you are young and beautiful. A white rosebud can mean you are too young for love. red and white roses together represent unity.

I had way too much fun with the white rosebud definition at one point.....hehehe

From all ive seen florists and others over the years have tried to put better definitions on some of the different rose colors. I hope that everybody keeps in mind that these are not always the currently used definitions....there arent even definitions for some of the different colors which were not as prominant at the time. These definitions stem from the victorian definitions of flowers...from the time when flowers having definitions was the most popular.

I don't just use the camera everytime... I mean at FIRST Competitions or FSPA Conventions and stuff like that... especially where there's a big party/dance. Usually when I go to "pick-up" a chick I just walk over and say, "Hey you look very familiar... I can't figure it out... oh wait, I know, you look like my new girlfiriend!" ;) J/K... No seriously I just walk up and try to make small talk, get a number or a way to contact them again, talk later that week and then next thing you know we're going on a date.

I like the idea of flowers having meanings. The problem is...

what if SHE does'nt know the meaning.:( I think I would be much more charming and romantic if she knew what the flower represented.:)

A ring on the first date huh? As long as the guy doesn't get on one knee when he gives it to her! :) Seriously, I consider myself a nice guy, but I don't think I'd ever give a ring on a first date, that's pretty excessive.

Eeek, its happened again! How come my last post is always on the bottom???!!!!

I deleted the post, and reposted it. That's odd. I could'nt post this morning either, a message about im only allowed to post every 47 seconds...even though it was hours. hmmm...

Has anyone received anything original, instead of flowers on a date? Like maybe a vase for the flowers ( I don't know!)

:D A ring would be out of the question, right? :D

Harrison

My last first date I got a hug...That was all..And I was perfectly happy.

I don't think that a 'present' should be expected just for a first date...You shouldn't have to win someones heart thru presents...Altho, it cant hurt to try i suppose...lol

Yes a ring would be out of the question....
once on a date, the boy gave me one of these plastic guns from the little dispensers at a bowling ally. He was a bit special though....

Ben Mitchell
06-05-2002, 16:31
I was just kidding about the ring! Really, that's why i put the laughing faces around it. I would'nt normally do that..honestly...

Was he a good sort of special, or a different kind of special?

actually there are like friendship rings and other rings like that. at least i think that getting a ring like that on a first date it sort of shows that the guy really thought about the date but i know i date really expect anything like that on a date but of course my last date I left from my soccer game without like getting to take a shower so I am probablely not the norm here
