View Full Version : FIRST to be on the Disney Channel: I Need Suggestions
Daniel Brim

That's right. FIRST will be on the Disney Channel on their "Amazing Kids" segment. It isn't much - a 30 second short between shows. There will be 10 people interviewed total.
I have been asked to do an interview, and hopefully I will be able to talk about what I want to talk about. Since I am representing FIRST, I want to know what FIRST wants me to talk about :) . There are no guarantees, but I will take suggestions. I may have more details by the end of the week (hopefully). I will not be able to get to everything; it is only 30 seconds.
My ideas so far:
How FIRST is not battle bots
The meaning of FIRST
Personal experiences (why I joined, what I have gained)
The impact of FIRST
Again, I am open to suggestions :)
-Daniel
Man, thirty seconds... that's awesome that it's going on TV, but that really sucks.
It'd take a whole lot more than 30 seconds to give a semi understandable explanation of what FIRST is, let alone all those other things.

A little off-topic did anyone ever see that FIRST movie that DIsney did in 2002 with Noah Wyle? Was it any good?

Someone split this topic now please, before it gets to be about that, and not the original intent.
Anyways, 30 seconds.. hmmm..
5-10 seconds: "Welcome to the GA Dome <various shots of robots, and crowds>
5-10 seconds: Explain What the acronym FIRST stands for.
There goes (more than) half your segment.
No chance of an extension?

Whoa, FIRST Movie? Say Again? Anybody have a name??
Oops- sorry Elgin.
30 seconds? I say go for the acronym and the point really fast and show robots and stuff.

I believe all of the tapings are local - the phone number I got in the e-mail was a Southern California number. It's too late (as far as I know) to have any footage of Championships (it is a shame). There will be 10 segments of 30 seconds (if I understand this correctly), 1 of which is me. I doubt I can get an extension, but I will ask.

Do you know who the other 9 are?
If so, you all could coordinate, so that one person explains what FIRST is, one explains it's benefits, etc etc. until you cover everything you wanted to.

No I don't. One other person will be from around here. When I contact the director I will ask him. The e-mail I got sounded like they wanted to focus on me, but I feel that is the wrong route to take.

I would make it a big point to mention how FIRST needs corporate sponsorship/partnership and funding.
Also, that quote (I think it was by Cory?) that went something like "this is the only program where $6000 can change a group of students lives forever" would be good to use. You'd have to refine it from the way I worded it from my fading memory.

The issue I have with that is I don't think corporate sponsors would be watching the Disney Channel :) . You never know, I guess...

point out that this is something that kids (and adults) can get involved in now. make sure that this isn't just 'something cool that they saw on TV the other day'. unlike monster garage or pimp my ride (for example), this is something that they could be involved in tomorrow.

Tell the people watching about how cool it was for you for the first 20 seconds with a voiceover with FIRST video of the bot in action. Then tell the people watching about how they can get involved.
Wet their appetite then feed it. Then the 9 other interviews would be very similar format only with differernt footage and stuff about what first meant to them. But always end with that "to find out more, go to usfirst.org" tag line. Eventually enough wow factor will make people actually visit the site, FIRST can take it form there :) Good luck with the interviews!

I didn't even know it was going to be on. Is there a digitized clip online somewhere?

Even more off-topic...
While I didn't find that particular movie on the IMDB, for whatever reason I did a search on Woodie Flowers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098903/), and he was the host of Scientific American Frontiers on PBS for 3 years, from 1990 to 1993!
The show is still on today with new episodes, but the more amazing thing is PBS has archives (http://www.pbs.org/saf/previous2.htm) of every show. If you look back in the archives back to that 1990-1993 period, you can watch our friend Woodie as the host of the show! I'm watching an episode called "High Rollers" from 2/12/1992, where Woodie went skydiving! (In the PBS archive, search for "roller coaster" and it's the last one that comes up).

Yeah Marc, you don't remember that was a question I got at FIRST Jeopardy @ Battlecry like.. one week ago?

I didn't even know it was going to be on. Is there a digitized clip online somewhere?Unfortunately, no. I signed a contract saying I could not share it outside of the comfort of my own home "in the universe in perpetuity" (yes, exact words). They can't even tell me when it airs, so you will probably just have to watch for it.
What really made me mad was that I couldn't even mention FIRST by name. I did get to talk about Dean Kamen for a little bit, but it was way too centered on me (I couldn't do anything about it).

I saw it good job
I must say I love the Disney channel. Even if I am 17 :D
I notice on the clip that you look a lot younger than most high schools students on my team.

so i'm watching the disney channel with my siblings, and long story short, the first few seconds of this clip prompt me to shout "oh my god, it's FIRST!"
well done, especially considering the content restraints put upon you

I just saw it in the middle of Kim Possible. I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more about FIRST. It focused on Daniel who participates in a national robotics competition (I can't remember the exact phrasing, but it was something to that effect). He's a programmer and does CAD for his team. They showed some pictures of the competition and had a clip of him playing with the robot in what I assume is 294's shop.
But I do understand why they didn't talk about FIRST, so I guess it's alright. The purpose of those segments is to show kids doing great/big/interesting/important things. Talking about FIRST isn't as important to Disney as showing a kid that works with robots in a national competition.

Sure, I'll come on over :P

Whoa, so my roommate's obsession with the Disney Channel finally payed off and i saw the clip!!!
It was done really well and explained FIRST and the competition fairly well, and focused on Daniel's role on the team.
Sorry i don't have a better description, i was a little late tuning in (ever zoned out?) and it was a short segment, but i have to say, well done by Disney.

We should write disney, tell them to keep playing it

I think that being on the Disney Channel is a wonderful opportunity and another way for FIRST to advertise being involved in FIRST robotics competitions. Congratulations to you for being part of the interview. What is "amazing" to me is that the Disney Channel will broadcast this episode on "Amazing Kids", but the "Amazing kids" don't have the opportunity to go to Disney for an International Competition. When competitions were held in Disney the "amazing kids" were rewarded for their outstanding work and dedication to FIRST and were live for a large Disney population to visit. Maybe someday in the future...but not before 2008, the "Amazing Kids" will once again be acknowledged for their efforts and afforded the opportunity to go to DISNEY !!!

I hate to dig this thread up from the depths, but I figure since tv to internet recording has become simpler, I'd give this another shot. I know people have mentioned they saw the short, but for those of you that didn't, I included the script below.
Tonight, about 10:50pm EST I fell over it for the first time. If someone wants to reach out and record it (hey, west coasters - it's on between Life with Derek and Suite Life of Zach and Cody) that'd be great.
To be honest, I don't normally watch them, but what caught my eye was the bright red tetrahedron! I even ran upstairs to wake up my parents to show them (they didn't appreciate it as much as I did).
So, onto the script:
Boy: "Daniel is a member of a robotics team at school that designs, builds, and competes in national robotics championships. It says he's the team's computer programmer and designer. He builds a model of the robot on the computer, and then helps the team bring it to life."
Girl: "Looks pretty complicated!"
Boy: "Daniel and his team members get to work with professional engineers and scientists who are experts in robotics."
Daniel: "One of my heroes is Dean Kamen. He's invented lots of things that help other people. One of the things he's invented is the portable dialysis machine. He also designed the pacemaker that's in Cheney's heart right now."
Boy: "When Daniel grows up he wants to help people too. He hopes to someday design a remote-controlled robot that would help people who can't move to do daily activities, like brushing their teeth or going to the movies."
Girl: "Now that would be one cool robot! Keep on designing, Daniel!"
Congratulations to the Beach Cities Robotics, and specifically Daniel for getting the word out there about FIRST in a big way! I'm glad Disney is still showing this clip. =)
(and sorry for digging up an old thread!)

Ok so I saw this thread and was about to give a suggestion when I realized the date on it. That explains why I've seen the same "check this kid out" clip BandChick just wrote out for us. Nice job on it!
Meh, missed it and don't feel like digging through countless things... (apparantly Youtube can't distinguish between FIRST and first, so the first few pages are all about "firsts" for Disney, so I dunno)

keep in mind that this is just the disney channel. Yes it is television but it isn't the type of thing we should be adressing on a kids' channel. I believe that disney is doing that just for the hype of robots and FIRST. Just say:
(5 seconds)
your name and where your from and where you are.
i.e. Hey my name is _____ from _______ and this is the _____ robotics regional
(10 seconds)
say somethign else like: This robotics competition is organized and run by FIRST. Their goal is to make the future engineers.
(10 seconds)
something like: They give us a problem and we have to make a solution. i live for it
so theres 25 seconds. This is just probably what i would do in your case.
WhiteShadow1474: Just an FYI, if you go to the beginning of this thread, the segment was recorded nearly 3 years ago... O_O
Tell them that one of FIRST's goals is to be in every school in the country. NH has committed to this goal by 2010.
