View Full Version : Who did you get to meet/want to meet at nationals?

Hey everyone!
I had a blast at nationals this year. It was my first year being an alumni and I wasn't expecting to have as much fun as previous years.
One of the highlights of my nationals trip was I got to meet two people I've wanted to for a while.
Encounter #1: Saturday morning at the Omni, after getting dressed and heading downstairs, I went to eat breakfast in the CNN Center food court. I went over to the sandwich shop, one of the only places open at the time, and placed my order. I shuffled off to the left to wait for my order. A mentor from team 45 The TechnoKats, wearing a competition team coach pin, stepped over in the wait line behind me. I know a few people (Deej) that came from that team, so I figured I'd start a conversation while waiting. Much to my surprise it was the one and only Andy Baker! (On top of that, he knew my name! :yikes: ) We talked for a bit before my order came and someone else came over to get Andy's attention. I said goodbye and went to enjoy my mini pancakes, eggs, and sausage.
Encounter #2: This also happened on Saturday. My friend Tom and I explored the Hall of Fame, looking at what other teams had done in past. We noticed a teammate of ours, Kyle, talking with a member of the X-Cats. After looking at the rest of the displays, we sauntered over to where they were. Kyle had to head out to tend to other duties, so Tom and myself stayed there and continued the discussion. Turns out it was Koko Ed! Koko meets Coco. We stayed there for about 20 minutes talking about how the year was going, the game in general, chairmans awards, etc. I would have stuck around longer but we had a match so Tom and I had to leave.
Being an alumni, I guess I now have more time to interact socially with other FIRSTers. I hope to meet many more people next year!
Did anyone else get to meet someone they wanted to? Or did anyone not get to meet someone?

Kinda got stuck in my pits helping fix things and coaching at whatnot, So the list of people I met is rather short..
Paul Copioli, who I didn't actually know was all famous and the new WFA when I actually met him and played with his team. (Shows how in the loop I am)
Karthik Kang..... yeah. Karthik. Who's really cool and mentored 1114, who we teamed with to beat 71 in a round.
Eugenia Gabrielov, who randomly found me staring at a match on the screen waiting to see if we needed to leave for our next round.
Joe Johnson, who I actually met at GLR, but that was before kept finding bugs in his wicked scoring spreadsheet.
I'm sure I probably met more people than that, but things are a bit of a blur at the moment....

-Kevin Watson (????)
-Heidi (116)
-Neha (1345)
-Barry (1604--although I so said something to him at UCF)
-Andy Baker (45, although his stuff's everywhere)
-Steve Warren (188?)
-Al Skierkiewicz (111)
That's all I can remember. For some reason, my fragile college mind isn't working as well as I thought.

Brandon Martus (Got to shake his hand and said hello during the web hug)
Robomom - Jenny Beatty (Was walking back to the pits from a practice sesson and suddenly saw the name tag)
And the rest who I saw in Atlanta, I may have seen them but didn't speak to you or I just didn't noticed if you are a poster on ChiefDelphi

People I was very happy to meet/hang out with:
Team 1574 from Israel. I had the pleasure of meeting most of them and actually hanging out with them for most of the competition. We had a lot of fun and I'll miss them a lot. They were really really really nice and funny guys.
Lindsay Q from team 234. I met this chica in Arby's at the Boilermaker Regional and was really happy to have hung out with her again at Championship. She's a great girl and I can't wait to see her again.
Aaron (aka rocknthehawk) from the DevilDawgs. I had been talking to him for a while online and was really looking forward to meeting him. He's a cool guy. I hope to see him again at a competition.
Ryan from 234. I didn't get to talk to him much, but he's a nifty guy and I'm talking to him online right now.
I wish I could have met more of you!!

I didn't have as much time as I thought I would, and when I had spare time, it was rarely long enough to venture into the stands or extensively in the pits. As a result, I didn't meet nearly as many people as I intended, but most of my time was spent finding these people that I did. I probably didn't forget anyone on this list, as it was rather short:
-Billfred(1293)
-Brandon Martus (47)
-Big Mike (25)
-Corey Balint (25)
-CDR1122334455 (1403???)
-Barry Bonzack (1604) (nice business cards, btw)
-The Lucas (365)
-Henry (222)
-JVN (229)
-Oliver (1006)
-KathieK (173)
- RJ (don't know username) (173)
-Genia (461)
-The rest of 461 (that's what happens when you cram an entire team in an elevator  )
-Alex Cormier (1126)
-Koko Ed (191)
People I saw Again:
Tom (195)
Steve (571)
Kyle, who I saw only briefly at Philly (365)
That's all...I think. I recognized a bunch more of you, but at the time I was either rushing around or you were zooming by me on a segway fast enough that I couldn't catch up :D .
RoboMom- Saw her at the seder after championships Saturday.
Arefin- Finally met him...several times
Dean Kamen- Again...at the seder this time(I now have his and Woody's signatures on my team shirt :D )
Isreali team members- At the seder obviously
Human Players- Human player zones.
I cannot believe all the people I got to meet, at the webhug, at the NEMO hug, in the pits, at the seder, at the VEX party, in the Hyatt elevator, at Jocks and Jills, walking the blue carpet back and forth, and even on the street. It was great! of course it helps when you have a name tag, or two, or three, or four, hanging from a fishing vest. ;)
Next year, I want to add one like Steve W.'s flashing nametag thingy.
Many thanks to all of you who went out of your way to introduce yourselves.

I got to meet Billfred and Big Mike!!! Lucky for me, I didn’t get a bear hug from either.
I’m really disappointed that I had the chance but didn’t get to meet David Kelly. He was sitting right there next to my son, Keith, at the scorer’s table on Curie, but I never saw the name on his volunteer badge. If I had, I would have delivered some reputation points in person – AKA a very warm handshake.
Keith and I volunteered this year at GLR, Detroit, MWR, WMR, and the Championship. I wish now that I’d kept a list so that I could exceed the max post size by mentioning them all. Many of them you may not know; they’re the ones behind the scenes, the scorekeepers, field attendants, coordinators, technicians, referees, supervisors, directors, judges, and so on and so forth…
Note to Jack: Make a list in 2006 !!!

I didn't meet many people at all, I was too involved just watching the competition, I forgot to go socialize! I'm a bit shy, but next year, I'll be everywhere.
I did, however, meet Woodie Flowers on multiple occasions. I saw him in a gate at Logan airport, his flight was leaving a few hours before mine. I saw him today also, but this time, he was on my flight! I was the first of my team at the gate and I spotted him and it definitely caught me by surprise. We all talked for awhile and I got a picture. He said 'bye' to me when he was getting off the plane (as in, staring directly at me). About 20 minutes later, there he was again! But this time, at baggage claim. I didn't bother him, but his wife said goodbye to me as I left (I was picked up early by my parents since my team's second plane was delayed twice). All in all, it was awesome. :)
I met plenty of people... the only problem was that I never really got names or anything.
Since I'm arm operator I was busy for long periods of time and didn't have much time to socialize except with other drivers. I also got quite a few people who just randomly walk up and start talking to me, or comment on my hair...
...thats about it. Wish I woulda had time to make friends with people (aside from the drivers from 245, they are about the only non-Chickens I consistently talked to)

I met a whole load of people, almost everyone on my list.
I also met most of them at the webhug, where I had already had 3 cups of coffee.
Disclaimer: I rarely have quite that much energy :P :P :P
There were some people on my list that I didn't get to meet. Here's somethign cool that happened.
I sat at the Seder with Dan Green leading it with me, and at the same table as (gasp) Dean and Bart Kamen. That rocked. Dean signed my shirt, and Bart gave me his business card because I want to be a pediatric oncologist and he is one. And that was my entire weekend
Nice to meet everyone that met me.

Coco... perhaps Andy knew your name since it is on the back of your shirt!
Anyways, my list is pretty short since I was either in the pits or in the stands, and I was pretty quiet at the webhug.
Greg Ross (330)
ChrisH (330)
Bill Gold (254 - again)
Some other random drive team members
Mysterious person in the red sweatshirt (some person who saw me right after I got kicked off of the drive team when I needed a hug. She walked up to me and gave me a hug. That made me feel better :) )

I met a ton of people, but of the people I recognized from Chief Delphi I met Ashley from team 1559 (with Rolling Thunder) and the Kool Squad from team 25 (on two occasions...). I never really made a list of people who I wanted to meet though.
I was also extremely happy to get to see some familiar faces one more time (hopefully not the last).
Al Skierkiewicz
24-04-2005, 23:26
It was wonderful to meet so many of you at the webhug. I now have so many more people I can wave to in my travels. I wish we had just one more day to meet and greet. A chance to talk with some of you that I only was able to say "hi" would be great. I met almost as many people in the hotel food court as those I saw on the pit floor. Hope everyone had a safe trip home.
Wow I met so many ppl in person finally....including....
Al Skierkiewicz
SteveW
Big Mike
BillFred
Woodie Flowers
Dean Kamen
John Abele
Dave Verbrugge
Blair WhatshislastnameIforgot AKA Voice of FIRST
Koko Ed
RoboMom
Heidi Foster
And of course the group of people I've met at other regionals as well...
GWRoss
ChrisH
Courtneyteam330
Mark Leon
Sorry if I forgot anyone...hope you all had fun!
Edit:
Oh also met Ryan Albright really quickly at lunch break, and Rev. Jesse Jackson on the last night at the hotel. He was there for the Trumpet Awards. I think he was a little shocked, if not disturbed, by the large masses of teenagers running around in brightly colored plumage.

Hmm...lets see, my list is fairly short cause I was always in the stands doing scouting stuff and running between the pits and the stands. I did get to meet Andy Baker, which was really cool. I also got to talk to some other people from 45 cause we were sitting in the stands next to them and they were all really cool. I also met Ryan from cyber blue, we had a scouting talk, trading scout forms and stuff, which was cool too. Also met Al Skierkiewicz for a moment when I stopped by Wildstang's pit (electrical rocks->electrical never messes up, its the programming lol). If some of you met me and dont know it (lol) I was the guy from 364 with the black sombrero with all the buttons hanging around it.

Of this list (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showpost.php?p=366211&postcount=62), I finally got to meet...
Rich Kressly - Although his namebadge was wrong ;)
Koko Ed - Whom I managed to find at the webhug
Bill Gold - Whom we HAVE to get to IRI, because he was just too awesome and we didn't get to hang out enough
Heidi Foster - Whom I hunted down on Thursday, and who was a total pleasure to meet (thank you for the ltd edition button!)
Gary Dillard - Whom I teased about the short shorts picture
Bharat Nain - Who freaked us out with his 'I Am JVN' backpack
Jeff & Tyler Wetzel - Although I had met Jeff before, they're still cool
Dorienne Plait - Who was just as sweet as I had imagined her to be!
Kim O'Toole - Who shook her milkshake with me, and sang backups
Jenny Beatty - No relation, very nice and a great NEMO
Kathy Kentfield - Another outstanding NEMO
Jay Trzaskos - Whom I cheered for in the stands, and did a great job driving
and last, but certainly not least:
Greg Needel - My dance partner who helped me bust a move
What a great weekend. I'd say my meet & greet 'report card' was pretty good; Rich Wong and Travis Covington weren't in attendance, I tried to meet the elusive Joe Ross like three times, and for the UFH's I didn't meet (Wayne Cokeley, Joe Ross, Ian Mackenzie) I did get to meet several other people who were great (like UFH's Warren Boudreaux and Mark Breadner, the guys from 65, etc.). Thanks to all those who took me up on my 'Meet Amanda In Atlanta' offer, and I hope you enjoyed your sweet treat! I couldn't even BEGIN to list everyone, as I went through about a bag and a half of candy (around 75)... so for everyone that came to say hi, it was great to meet you!

Actually, I was not near Atlanta this weekend and I don't recall any visitors up in these parts. You must be mistaken.
I didn't meet as many people as I would've liked to :(, I was scouting too much of the time, but some people I met were RoboMom, KathieK, The Lucas and Barry Bonzack1604.

Heh... yes, it was cool talking to you at breakfast.
The Coco name on the back of your shirt helped, but I recognized your face by your "who-am-I" pic also.
The introduction went something like this:
me: are you Coco the Monkey?
Coco: yes
me: I am Andy the Baker.
:)
Take care and stay in touch,

Ok, so I started making a list of everyone I met at Championships in Word and ended up realizing by the time I had continued on to a third page and still had tons more to add that I had met far too many people to list in this thread. I had a simply fantastic time. I was given the opportunity to talk and hang out with so many fantastic people and made some great friendships along the way. The fact that I had the chance to converse with so uncountable members, mentors, advisors, volunteers, judges, ambassadors, company heads, heads of FIRST, and so many others was truly amazing. Being able to meet some of you who I talk to practically everyday over AIM and phone for the first time and who I consider to be family was such a significant experience. It was great finally getting to be with my "Indian children" (love you all!) and having our "family" together for the first time with a few new additions as well. Of course, it was also awesome getting the chance to talk with my soon-to-be classmates at Carnegie Mellon from a number of teams. I loved being able to get together with all of my FIRST sisters and brothers, some of my closest friends. I miss you all terribly and truly hope that I will get to see you all again sometime, hopefully soon.
To all those I met (you know who you are), thank you all for making Championships such an awesome event for me, perhaps one of the best ever! Please make sure to keep in touch with me!

503 flew to and from ATL on the same plane as team Rush (27), i met the drivers from every team that 503 had a match with for those all important strategy sessions, and saw too many teams to even remember on the subway and in the airport. We caught up with 330 at some MARTA station after the party, and the next day while we were going through security at the airport. And i met andy baker while we were leaving centennial park. it was pretty cool to meet the guy behind the transmissions we used.
I spent a long portion of Thursday talking to 1577, the Lion of Judeah. It was very interesting, talking to the Isreali team and learned a lot. Some of them were a bit looney but all were still fun to talk to them.

This year I was sad to not be traveling to nats with a team, and then I realized I was traveling with many teams. A special thanks to MOE 365 for adopting me at the comp this year!
! ! !!! !!!! GO MOE!
For reference, I was doing field re-set on Galileo Friday and Saturday, then was the crazy girl dancing on the Galileo side of Einstein during the finals/awards. Yeah the one who was on the big screen like 5 times :ahh: And no, I am not a cheerleader and will never be one, I'm just a geek like the rest of you. I definitely would have loved being in the pit working on a robot instead, but hey, getting people to be spirited was fun too.
I really wanted to meet all the people in the stands who got up and danced (too bad they didn't come down and join me! but I guess it's a bit scary dancing in front of thousands of people). I'm still trying to figure out how I did it... I had a triple mocha Saturday morning, then after that started to wear off I was running on pure adrenaline. I especially want to meet the people who were video taping me... :yikes: can I have a copy please?
The new people I met (because listing everyone I saw again that I knew would take too long) were:
- All the drivers of teams on Galileo, especially Titian robotics from WA (with their "killer" autonomous mode) and St. Joe's from NJ
- My stepbrother's teacher from BG in NH (he was wondering why I was cheering for their team lol although I was cheering for everyone)
- The refs and other volunteers on Galileo
- A bunch of random people I said "hhhheeeeeyyyyy" to, but I don't think I caught their names
- A few guys from 1038 in Ohio
- And of course, the few people with the guts to come down and join me dancing! You guys rocked!
If I met you and/or you want to say hi, please feel free to IM me.
Congrats to everyone! And I'll just leave it with "GALI---"
Yes, one of the best things at competitions is actually getting to know more of you folks face to face.
I was able to chit chat with just a few with the little free time I had:
Andy Baker and Mark Koors
Joe Johnson
Dave Lavery
Dave Verbrugge (at Embassy Suites)
Dean Kamen (at Embassy Suites)
Paul Copioli
John Neun

It was great talking to them. I truly wish them the best in their future FIRST endevors.

It's funny, but the people who came by our pit area looking for me impressed some of my teammates (most of our team does not post on CD) and made me seem much more important than I am... hee hee... And of course, everyone who was there highly enjoyed it when Big Mike sneaked up behind me and bear hugged me... But that's okay... Big Mike is just the kind of guy that you don't mind being an arm rest for. From the rest of my list I also met:
Amanda Morrison, and if the picture is any indication, her legs are as nice as Dave's...
Billfred, who I forgot to swat, darn it!
Gary Dillard, who should also worry since I now have a picture of him...
Andy Baker, a person everyone should try to meet!
Koko Ed, got his picture too...
Brandon, and I forgot to thank him in person because he showed up with Amanda and Big Mike and I got distracted by all of the excitement!
JVN, DCA Fan, gwross, Barry, Kevin Watson, ChrisH and KarenH, Matt Leese, and I'm forgetting some names here, especially the names of the people I met at the party on Saturday.
Oh, and I met Woodie Flowers at the Vex semi-finals where I gave him one of the Dave buttons, and Dean Kamen was in the bar at the Embassy Suites after the party on Saturday night, and I wouldn't really so much as say I met him as I just approached him and said "I know you're busy, and probably don't want to be mobbed, but I thought you may want one of these" and handed him a Dave button.

Special thanks to Courtney, I managed to meet Kyle (from 45) and Arefin (from 108). Both guys were awsome and I'm hoping to see more CD people in the future.
Funny thing is that I was known as "the guy who made 'The Person Above Me ' thread"

Gah, I overloaded on new-people-meeting at Nationals! So many to mention!
I hung out a lot with my twin from 1022, Jill. As she stated earlier in this thread, we met at an Arby's at the Boilermaker Regional, and ever since then, it's been nothing short of awesome. I spent so much time with her at Nationals, that some of her fellow Archer GEeks nicknamed me Jill 2.0! They have a picture of me helping out in their pits, too. :p
Nil, Noam, Tomer, Dor, and Or from Team 1574 were (and still continue to be) extremely awesome to hang out with during the competition. They taught Jill and I some "useful" Hebrew words, and we all continue to stay in touch.
Gabe and I didn't get to meet Dean, though. That was our mission, and it wasn't accomplished! Oh well. Does anyone have any tips on how to meet Dean next year? Like, where would someone have a better chance of seeing him?

I think the coolest person I got to meet by far was Woodie Flowers; we even got him to sing for us! It was our head mentor's b-day and we were joking around that morning about how cool it would be if we got Woodie Flowers to sing Happy Birthday to him, and then he actually did! It was awesome....I also got to meet people from 1574, that was really fun, and got to meet a few other people from teams we allianced with and all...other than that tho, sadly, i didn't get to meet a lot of people cuz i was always busy...but i still had lots of fun!
