View Full Version : What is the ration of boys to girls on your robotics team?

Just curious if we can estimate what percentage of students in FIRST are boys or girls. Ours: 17 boys to 8 girls (closest it's ever been, on our team!)
Jan Olligs

Most member of our team are guys, although the girls have the important positions...
Our team, mathematically, is about 20% girls... we have 32 people on our team...

Our team this year is mainly boys, i think we have somewhere around 6 girls on the team...

we have 1 girl, yup count em 1 girl to the thirty two or so guys. Thats all right, we need at least one to keep us all in line, and keep things from getting lost.
We have one girl (and that would be me!) out of a team of 8

Ours is about half and half,
We a private all boy school, nuff said.
Our ratio: a bunch of guys to four girls. All of the girls are seniors who are going to graduate this year. So, unless we have newbie girls next year, our team is going to be all guys.

Hmm...
The poll results are a bit disturbing: we have about 75% guys on our team, but ideally it should be 50/50, right?
Hopefully, things will begin to turn around, and we'll get a more even distribution of FIRSTers through the years.
Hey, that'd be an interesting experiment: put up this poll each year, and see if there are any trends. I think that we'll begin to get closer and closer to 50/50 as time passes, and FIRST grows in size, and visibility.

team 25 is somewhat girl deprived. we only have 3 female members. maybe the hawaiian shirts scare them away. or maybe its just the really strange people on our team.
we have only 3 girls. We do however, have alot of women(like engineers and moms) on the team also.
I would just like to take this oppurtunity to also thank all the mom's on moe. Thanks for all your hard work and creative ideas. GO MOE BOOSTERS
Our evolution, since we started doing FIRST:
2000 - 12 men : 0 women
2001 - 5 : 1
2002 - 2 : 1
(proportions, not actual numbers)
So, women participation is getting bigger every year. :)

Allright: continuing the tradition of the girl dominated team every year at our school; team 128 has: 17 girls, 8 guys:D
i dont know why we always have more girls than guys, but we do

Our team's split about 50/50, and has been for the four years i've been involved. Most of the team's leadership are girls, as are about half the engineers. It's nice to know we're ahead of the curve, even though all the alumni are guys.

I'm one of 12 girls on a team of 35 total, so basically one third of team 103 is girls. Each girl has a very important role, including team secretary, treasurer, and vice president. What would the guys do without us? haha. jk I have to give the guys some credit too... we'd have no one to build the robot without them. :o)

Our team has about 13 members and only 2 are boys. The positions are equally split we have a girl and guy driver and me and another guy as human player. last yr we were a team of over 50 and there were way more boys that girls. Fortunately most of them graduated. While me and the girl driver are graduating this yr there will be an opportunity for the other girls to step up. Unless we get some "fresh blood" that is composed of alot of boys. But anyways he all get along pretty great and I don't see the guys complaining about their being the overflow of girls. :-)

team 668 is predominantly female :) we are very proud of this.
my memory says 14 female to 9 male, but i think my count is a little bit off...alot of the females help with animation and chairmans, but there are about 5 of us that help extensively with the robot itself. all of the females play and important role on the team. even if it's small, we can't do without it. i have informally taken a few roles (we don't have actual offices on the team) girls rock!! (i guess guys do too... ;))

Girls... err.. uhm..
bah.
I was going to reply intelligently, but I think I've lost my ability to count.
But I think we're 75ish% male. Could be a little more than that though. I guess that makes me a minority. :p
Katie Reynolds

We started out with 6 girls and 29 guys... now we have about 6 girls and 24ish guys... so tha ratio of girls to guys is about 1:4!

W00T! My team, as stated earler, has a ratio of 11 girls to 2 boys. I guess its ok, but sometimes, when we need to do "guy" things, we can't. (I am not going to post, they are some-what inaproprate) I'm not complaining, but it wouldn't hurt to get some more guies in our club. Mabye a 20:13 girl:guy ratio would be fine w/ me. Just so we (guies) can do what we want to. (Hit up on chicks w/ out being called pigs :D)
<Edit>I am the only male driver on our team:p The other one is the human player!</edit>

We don't ration the boys. Any of the girls can have as many as they want. :-)
Matt Reiland
20-04-2002, 19:03
Out team is about 5:1 boys to girls, which is probably a better ratio than what you are going to see in many Engineering colleges in the fields of Electrical and Mechanical, most of the girls (ehh women) liked chemical engineering back when I graduated. I think there were a total of 3 or 4 women in my graduating class at Purdue in Electrical. Until things change that type of ratio is a drwaback to engineering which is why Dean and Woodie encourage everyone to participate.
Hey Alfred I was wondering if anyone was going to pop that in.

I love being on a team with more girls than boys. We really know how to get things done and that is how it should be.
Recently there was an article in the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle about girls getting more into science and technology and the X-Cats were featured!

We have 2 girls to about 15 guys, sometimes more guys.
Mike Martus
21-04-2002, 17:05
Over the past several years team #47 has had more female members than males.
2001 there were 20 female and 8 male team members
2002 there are 14 female and 13 male team members
This may be due in part to the high academic standards we have to become a FIRST team member.
Michael Murphy
22-04-2002, 01:02
I really hope that was a joke. It's kind of offensive to imply that guys can't reach the same levels of academic excellence that girls can. We may think differently, but that has no relevence on our ability to do well in school. In my graduating class, the top ten students were five girls and five guys (I was not one of them, sadly enough). Of course, if it was a joke, please excuse my rant.
Mike Martus
22-04-2002, 05:26
Not to imply that guys are not as smart as girls.
What I really am saying is that there are many other choices for the male students that seem to attract them. Sports teams are a big attraction. Many times the girls do both sports and FIRST. The guys seem to focus on just one activity at a time.
While the choices for sports are supposed to be equal they really are not, due to when the sport is offered.
Add to that the responsibilities of an afterschool job and you reduced availability. Many male students choose - because of necessity - the job.
Overall, less male students apply to the team than female students. It has been that way for the past 7 years.
Michael Murphy
22-04-2002, 13:12
Thank you, Mike, for clarifying your point. I didn't know that more girls applied than guys.
Members of my team of both sexes compete in both FIRST and other sports, so I've never seen it as a problem.

We have 7 guys and 5 girls. In the past, the ratio has been a lot more weighted towards guys, but this year, it's close to equal. Even in the beginning of this year we had more guys, but we lost a few members for various reasons, and more of them were guys than girls.
The poll results are a bit disturbing: we have about 75% guys on our team, but ideally it should be 50/50, right? -Ameya on Team 293
Well, Ideally, it'd be about 250 girls and... me... that'd be MY robotics team if i had to choose... *grin* but we can't all have what we want right? ;)

we have about 40 people on our team and girls include me, Kim Ehret, Michelle DeCarlo, and Nicole Kessler. 9 guys for every girl...not bad at all... ;)
Rob Colatutto
16-05-2002, 21:48
what are you talking about 40!! we have like 15 members at most....
Rage has 4 girls and about 20 or so guys on the team. Two of them are seniors so we may only have two girls on the team next year but we will probably gain some incoming freshman girls next year

shush, no one asked you, weenie (nataku)! about 40 people are getting credit for being in the club, even though 13 people went to florida, and only 8 people were completely devoted to building the robot. 3 of the 13 in Florida were girls, but for the most part, i was usually the only girl around.
DanLevin247
16-05-2002, 22:19
Nobody went to Flordia from 'da bears. We couldn't afford it. Those pictures are our travel team, and sadly some of those people don't deserve to be on it. Other than those people...there are about 40 more kids that are just taking FIRST as a blowoff class at our school, even though it's anything but a blowoff class.
Mark Hamilton
16-05-2002, 22:31
Our ratio is probably around 6 guys : 1 Girl. But the Emerging Computer Technology Magnet, which is why we have the team, at our school is skewed in a manner similiar to this (More guys into tech I guess), so its not that suprising. I think I speak for all the guys on 108 when I say we are jealous of the teams with more girls then guys.

it's fun to be on an all girls team. but it does get annoying after awhile when people stare and marvel in amazement that a group of girls were able to create a robot. almost like it's something that's NEVER happened before. it was never expected, but it's such an accomplishment. it should be counted as a compliment, but it's just tiring to hear. oh wells... that's enough of my rambing.

MEEEEEEP! Yes I meep at you, and i will meep at you again. MEEEEEEP!:)
My team has three 33 guys and 3 girls, and two girls are graduating this year. It's not like we discourage girls from joining our team. We encourage them to join but they just don't seem to want to come. I mean, I love FIRST, but if I'm stuck at school for 250+ hours during the build period, I don't want to be looking at guys the whole time.

3/4 of our team is made up of boys. It is kinda sad...but all the girls on the team are a big part. They help alot. Maybe alot more combine than what the boys do  haha im just kidding wildstang boys. :D

I don't know the whole team, but I believe that about two-thirds of my team are boys. But if you just count the manufacturing team of the team, then it's about half and half assuming that all members on the team are active members.

It's just trolling.
You can do that on any messageboard and get the same empty calories from doing it. You been around and you know FIRST offers better opportunites than that, man. You could be so much more. Why waste it?
