Hi all,

In order to steal another page from what works in sports, I have hit upon the idea of trying to generate some added excitement about the FIRST Championships by starting a Zone Zeal Pool (ala the very popular NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament pools).

Here is how it is going to work:

You make your favorite picks for the tournament.

You submit those picks to us via an Excel spreadsheet mailed to ZoneZealPool@ChiefDelphi.com

Prior to the tournament, as entries come in, we post information about which teams are being handicapped to go how far.

During and after the Elimination Rounds, we will post the scores and usernames of the higher scoring entries.

After the Championships, we will post the winning entry (so you can all see how that high score was obtained) and to make things interesting, I, personally, will give a $100 gift certificate from Home Depot to the winner.

More rules about who can enter and other details are included in the Excel file and below.

Good Luck.

Joe J.

1) Choose the 16 teams from each division that will you believe will be most likely to be in the Divisional Quarter-Finals of the Elimation Tournament

2) From the above list, choose 8 per division that you believe will most likely pass on to the Divisional Semi-Finals

3) From the above list, choose 4 per division that you believe will most likely pass on to the Divisional Finals

4) From the above list, choose 2 per division that you believe will most likely pass be the Divisional Champions

5) From the above list of 4 pairs of Divisonal Champions, pick the 2 pairs that you believe will be most likely to pass on to the Grand Finals

6) From the above list of 2 pairs of Grand Finalist, pick the 1 pair that you believe will be most likely to pass on to the Grand Finals

7) Enter X's in the appropriate boxes on the DATA ENTRY sheet. NOTE: "ERRORS" MUST BE ZERO (0) FOR YOUR ENTRY TO BE CONSIDERED!

8) "Save As" Replacing "YOURNAMEHERE" with your ChiefDelphi.com username

9) E-mail the entry with the file attached to: ZoneZealPool@ChiefDelphi.com

10) Entries must be received before 9:00am EDT Friday April 26, 2002 to be considered

11) The pool is just for fun, but, Dr. Joe has decide to make things interesting by providing a $100 gift certificate from Home Depot to the person who submits the entry with the highest score.

12) In order to be eligible for the gift from Dr. Joe, you must meet the following criteria:
You must submit only one entry per person
You must be a registered member of the ChiefDelphi.com Forum
You must submit a 100-300 word response to the message titled: Zone Zeal Pool "Entry Fee" (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3837)

13) Members of the Chief Delphi team are welcome to submit entries, but will not be eligible for the gift from Dr. Joe.

14) With the exception of the winning pool entry, no individual pool entries will be made public. Other than the winning name and winning pool entry, only the names and SCORES (as opposed to pool entries) will be published.

15) Information about team's scores (see team scoring below) will be made public on the ChiefDelphi.com web site

16) Scores for individual pools will be calculated as follows:
1 point for each correct divisional quarter-finalist
2 points for each correct divisional semi-finalist
4 points for each correct divisional finalist
8 points for each correct divisional champion
16 points for each correct grand finalist
32 points for each correct grand champion

17) Scores for Teams will be posted on the ChiefDelphi.com website. Teams will get points for each pool entry similar to the manner that pool entries are scored (the numbers will be normalized by the number of pool entries).
1 point for each pool entry predicting that the team will be a divisional quarter-finalist
2 points for each pool entry predicting that the team will be a divisional semi-finalist
4 points for each pool entry predicting that the team will be a divisional finalist
8 points for each pool entry predicting that the team will be a divisional champion
16 points for each pool entry predicting that the team will be a grand finalist
32 points for each pool entry predicting that the team will be a grand champion

18) As usual, the decisions of the judge (Dr. Joe) is final and not necessarily fair and/or just. Sorry in advance.

About the pool...
What exactly is this data entry sheet that you refer to? I realize there's an entry form, but there just seems to be guidelines on it, not places to enter in data. Would you like us to write to the right of all the cells, or should I make my own spreadsheet and submit it to you?

How would you like the 100-300 page essay submitted to you? Should that be attached with the spreadsheet as well?

DO NOT WRITE YOUR OWN SPREADSHEET! The format of the data is important because we are going automate the pool scoring process and we need you to leave the file just as is, only putting X's in the proper boxes.

As to where to enter data, in Excel, there are sheet tabs at the bottom of the page that let you switch to different sheets of the spreadsheet. In the pool entry spreadsheet, there are 2 sheets. There is one called "Instructions" which is the one you see when you open the spreadsheet. There is another called "DATA ENTRY" Click on the tab and you will be ready to enter you pool choices.

As to how to submit the essay, just reply to the thread on the forum.

The team member from our team that was supposed to set up the mailbox to recieve the entries must have gotten too busy last night to get it set up.

Hold off sending it until I get the all clear signal.

Sorry for the delay.

I am sorry, but I just can't help you Mac folks ;-)

Basically, we need the spreadsheet filled out and mailed in. Can you visit the library or a friends in order to fill it out?

Wish I could do more.

Anybody have any better help for Mac users?

The Mac versions of Excel(and all of the Office apps, for that matter) create files 100% compatible with their Windows counterparts. Even though Excel probably won't list the file on a Mac when you go to open it, if you select All Files from the list of file types to show, it should show up and open without a problem.

From a previous post, I am wondering ...

Does the file download 100% .. and then Office crashes opening it?

Or does IE or your browser crash when downloading?

purplehaze357

IE crashes...because of a type2 error

Have you tried Shift-clicking, or click-and-hold, or whatever it is on a mac to get the menu to pop up, and tell it to save the target, rather than just clicking on the link?

Has anyone else filled the form in? As a native Hoosier, I've done my share of NCAA pools, but I never really cared about them, so they were easy. This form, on the other hand, is a monster! There was only one easy thing about it (118's performance, natch), but the rest will take some research. I'm going to go get some Dew, this could take a while.

Here's a spreadsheet with the winners and calculations to compute the score.

Simply cut and paste your selections into the first columns of this sheet to see how you did.

Obviously this is kind of quick and dirty. I think it's right, but let me know if I made mistakes.

Joe sent me my results yesterday. I assume he's pretty busy, so I'll pass on the list as he sent it...

Below are the top 10 finishers:
#1 Joel Johnson -- 162
#2 Mark Pierce - 146
#3 Karthik Kanagasabapathy - 136
JVN - 136
Doug Peterson - 136
#6 Joe Johnson - 134
#7 Kevin Weiss - 132
#8 Steve Shade - 120
Colleen Shaver - 120
#10 Artur Ostrowski - 115

Congratulations to Joel and all of the participants.

It's kind of suprising that there wasn't a larger spread of scores among the top ten.

I really enjoyed reading the "entry fees" and trying to predict the winners.
