What does your team call its student head? Just curious.
We have used captain for all up until this year, where we now have a "commodore". ;) She's also occasionally referred to a Czar, or Czarina. And of course, we call her captain as well.

We have two student leads, but right now we're in the process of re-structuring our team, so maybe I can suggest Comodore, it sounds pretty sweet.. :p
We don't have a team leader. We have a leadership team (http://www.x-cats.org/leadershipteam.html).

we currently like the idea of Capitano, but i'm pushing for Kingpin, Skipper, Honcho, Overlord, or "Hey You with the Face". You can have a lot of fun with this

Our team has a captain and a co-captain but with renovation of 204, who knows what going to happen next year.

Last year we had 'Major Tom', this coming year it should end up being 'King Heatwave'.
w00t, post 100 (after over 1 year)
This past year, we restructured and made the leader the Executive Director. But he ended up not doing much so we are dropping the job, divereting all leadership to the Vice Presidents. But the Board of Directors (aka mentors) have surpreem power and can over rule if they want. Maybe we should call the VPs the Triumverant (sp?), or quad-umverant...?

It's officially the office of the President, but I prefer to be called Il Duce or Supreme Dictator. Either will suffice.
She Who Is All Good and Holy
No, but seriously we really don't have one lead person. Somehow the team kinda just meshes together in an odd system of checks and balances. Of course, there are a few people that are more of a leader to a team than others.

Same way my team is.. We have selected subteam captains.. They really became pointless, because some teams only had 1-2 kids and didn't really need a captain or anything, or like our construction team had 2 students really stand out do most of the major work on the robot, and because the captain wasnt one of those two students he really didn't know what to say during the captain/advisor meetings every week.. We had no 1 leader except at the compeitions we had the team captain (me) and head inspection student, and we were really just given titles to sign the inspection papers and that was it.

Well officially it is captain on the theory that a club has a president and a team has a captain. However I do occasionally get the title Castro, Hitler or other dictator, there is always a name, however I do like Ceasar of "C".
"I told you. We're an anarcho-syndicalist commune. We take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week. But all the decisions of that officer have to be ratified at a special biweekly meeting. By a simple majority in the case of purely internal affairs, but by a two-thirds majority in the case of more..."
No, seriously, that's about it. We don't have a major power structure, we just all pretty much work and then at the final inspection whoever happened to be talking with the inspector just signs off as captain.

For the OCCRA season, we have co-captains, and for FIRST, we have a leadership team consisting of chassis, electronics/programming, promotions/communication, and appendage leaders. The project manager oversees this leadership team, and, in effect, the whole team.
As for less formal names, my team called me the Mother Duckling a lot...
Do you have anyone in mind for this title?
No, but we are taking applications...

Soldering sovereign I think I might have to take that title. While we have a commodore of the team we have so many groups with leaders. Lil' Lavery and myself are co-captains of outreach for example and the list of leaders goes on and on... ..

Our team does not have any official leaders. We have sub teams with their leaders. Most of the the time, the kids who put in the most amount of work end up being the "real" leader of the sub group. Our team is pretty much run by 5 students(who put in the most amount of work), and the rest put in all they can. I'm guessing the 80/20 rule applies here too. 20% of the kids do 80% of the work. All this has worked well because we've got work done(that needs to be done) efficiently and in time.

FIRST ROBOTICS is part of our six week project in our class of Engineering Physics and Engineering Systems. So keeping in mind the strucure of our class and System Engineering Projects, our leader is called Project Manager; and then so on. We have Public Relatio Manager, Additional Manager, Sub-Team Captains (head designer, head animator, head programmer etc), and Coach.
Yes but the team leader is called Project Manager. Even though Public Relation and Additional Manager do all the work. Lolzz
Like others... we have sub- team leaders. At the beginning of the year we used to meet in a "project management" meeting so we were called "Project managers" but that didn't last too long. Now we are just the "sub-team leaders" and there are eight to ten of us.

We have two co-captains on our team. Since there are two schools on our team, this works out fairly well. The powers of the captains are very limited during the build; everyone gets an equal say. The responsibility of the captain is to keep each school informed and make phone calls and e-mails about meetings and such if it is necessary.

For the first two years of 1168's existence, the leader was the President and was elected by the team. After that didn't work out so well last year, the Board of Directors (mentors) appointed a CEO this year, who was the team's student leader.
However, we don't have a very formal leadership structure. Essentially, whoever's in a best position to do the work ends up doing it, whether or not they're actually the designated officer/underling in charge of doing it.

Local Goddess graduated, so I'm not sure what it will be next year.
Well... currently leader, but last year's team lead was known as "The Plaid Warrior." Unfortunately, he moved to Indiana. :(

We don't have one student leader in charge of all the kids, but, if they are mature enough and qualified enough for the position, the team's mentors do appoint individual student captains to head up each subteam. These students work directly with each adult subteam captain to make sure the responsibilities of each group are carried out successfully.
We got a President, Vice president, Treasurer, and Secretary.
Although I am going to want to switch the names after some of these ones that are mentioned in the thread.
I guess we call our team leader - Captain.
Occasionally we call him Fearless Leader (the head bad guy from Rocky and Bulwinkle)

This year Mirza was our student team captain. I dont think we ever made an official title, as our leadership organization had a hard time getting off the ground (Mirza did a great job leading by example anyway!)
But back in high school, I earned the nickname "The General" and it stuck... my new team now calls me that as well, kinda goes with our army type theme anyway. Its kinda neat to have carried it all the way from HS to my mentoring position.

Team 836's top leadership is the president, which for the 2005 season was me but since i will be a mentor next year I can no longer fill that position, and when school starts again or even before that the leadership new and old will elect a new president. Under the president we have the team manager, and from there on we have vice presidents or captains for each sub team. This system worked for us last year and we hope it will work out for years to come.

We elect a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer each year, and then our elected officers get together and decide on who to appoint as subteam leaders (programming subteam, electronics subteams, etc). The president and vp run the meetings, and basically oversee all the work that's going on, while the subteams leaders are in charge of whatever is specific to their team. Our team is very student-run, and the system we have works pretty well to keep some semblance of order during build.
Our official leader of the whole club is simply the President, though he has been known as El Presidente. As for leads in specific teams, I became Mr. Autonomous for my lead in the autonomous programming last year. We also have our Chancellor of War who makes sure all those not working are not working properly, and throws in as many suggestions for equipping next year's robot with death rays as possible.

President and Vice President. I was dubbed the "Business Coordinator" back last season in '04, so I guess I'm Secretary-ish. I don't know.
But we've always dubbed our leaders Prez and VPrez. =D
i call myself vice captain, but we call the main leader El Presidente....

We call our student leader the Captain. Prior to this season, our leader was the President, but we decided that "President" was more befitting of a club, while a team should have a "Captain". So, when we held elections for this year's officers, he became known as the Captain.
He also goes by "The Human Playa"... but that's a whole different story...
Our team leader is our President other officer positions include Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Though in the past the President has done most of the work for all 4 positions, but now our mentors are going to start making sure officers do their own jobs. We have other leadership positions which include Pit Chief ( In charge of build and pit area organization), LEGO Overlord, Scouting Queen, and the Godfather. We also have sectional team leaders (electrical, mechanical, programming, website, animation, Awards(Chairman's and Woodie Flowers).
Captain is my official title. However, most people just call me by my last name (Duch, pronounced Duke). We have one Co-Captain who is second-in-command. Then we have sub-team captains who lead their sub-team students. We also have people with specific duties (i.e. pr, fundraising).
I don't think the model would work for small teams, but for a team with 45+ students, specific roles and student leaders are very important.
I'll be captain again next season so maybe i'll have a new nickname. We'll see :D

we just have student captains...the offical team leader is an adult who handles mostly the paperwork and all that fun stuff
then there are the student heads that are in charge of certain projects...
nothing really cool with names but all wellz maybe that'll change now i'm off the team..

Our team has what we call project managers. We have one head project manager and two others, so they as a group lead us. I mean, one person couldn't be at three places at once, so there couldn't be just one. But they can also check each other. :)

Well, we have a team captain, but it is only a title, although she is one of the most active members. The leader is whoever steps up and leads.

maybe you should call your team leader a team figure head, because the team is a democracy and one person cannot decide on what to do they come up with ideas and them presents them to the team so they can get the teams consent to put the idea into action
for team 22, we have what we call "the board" or inner circle, we call the head of the board.the president.

i was called a Student Team Captain and my very close friend who was also heavy into robotics and joined after me was considered the vice president / second in command / and a few other things =), the team i was with had 2 captains the student level and on the coach level - trust me everything ran quite smoothly with 2 captains ;-)
I was called the "Team Captain" this year, and that's what we use on letters or stationery sent by me. However, other common names (as you can see from my profile title) are "Student Leader" and "President." Our team constitution stipulated that the election is held for the "Team Captain," which is defined to be identical to "FIRST Student Leader" and "Club President." The multiple names for this position were made in order to:
(1) make sure the 'club' is actually a TEAM (hence "captain")
(2) abide by our school's 'Club' regulations - we must have a President
(3) identify who is designated in the FIRST Team Registration form as Student Leader
This year, all the team's final decisions went through me, the Captain. We also had "Directors" for each group (animation, PR, robot build/design). These Directors (Vincent for PR, David for Animation, and Me for Robot Build/Design) would delegate tasks to their groups and communicate their group's needs to the Captain. We also had a Assistant Captain, William - but this position is only active after our last competition is over and we hold elections for next year's captain (i.e. the Captain-elect for the next year is also the Assistant Captain for the current year). Generally, a Captain is either elected by students or appointed by the mentors, whichever is appropriate for that year, and then remains Captain until s/he graduates. All of these students make up the "Leadership Council." Next year, some students want to keep the Captain final-in-command, others want to increase the power of the Leadership Council, but the Council-elect members seem to be working well together anyway, and the ones who argue about such things aren't on the Council.
But in joking, we also call our various Leadership Council members "general," "comrade," "dictator," "supreme ruler," even the "head Fajita" (but that one's only for me  )

Our team calls me the Team Lead because I oversee everyone, of course that seems like a big job until you take a look at our roster which has 8 names on it 7 students and 1 adult including myself. 3 of the student members are leaving this year though, which will make us a team of 5

We call Mr. Tenbrink MR.T, "he pitties the fool"!!!!
The last one was the "Fearless Leader" or FL.....
He just graduated and I'm replacing him. Gotta decide what to go with now. I actually kinda like Commodore. Maybe Commander, or Admiral or something.
