View Full Version : Reputation Deflation

I have found that the reputation system is really good, and I love it, but I'm starting to think, that after 2 pages of people with maxed out green boxes (including myself), we might want to deflate everyone's reputation a bit. I'm not saying that these people don't deserve their reputations, they are the best of the best, but how will it help people if 60 some people all have the highest reputation level? I don't think I'm anywhere on the level of Andy Baker nor Dave Lavery, but they have the same amount of green boxes as I do.
Now, here's my suggestion. Every time the system goes out of control we can activate a 1/2 reputation. Basically, it'll half the reputation people have. So someone with 1,000 reputation points will have 500, 2,000 will have 1,000, etc.
Any opinions?

Sounds good.
oh boy, yet another rep. thread
Keep it the way it is, people will be pissed.
Take away some of their prized reputation: they'll still be pissed.
It's a lose-lose situation.
I still don't see what the problem is. If you sort by reputation, you'll see everyone with the highest rep first. It's more likely that if you have a question, you'll ask someone on the top of the first half page, than someone on the third page.

been there talked about that
As of today, my reputation level is just over 14,000.
To "max out" the green dots, you must reach 2,000.
Maybe we just need to make dots "cost more"?

I think that's the best idea.

I too agree, It has taken me a long while to get my rep points where they are now, I honestly don't think cutting all the reps by half will accomplish anything, By simply increasing the value of the green dots everybody wins.

Undoubtedly the best idea. Maybe we could also add a couple more dots(They might just fit in). Another side of my brain says we should not do anything about it because;

July 14, 2005 - I'll be honest -- I haven't touched (or thought about) Listen-To since March 01, 2005 (the last update). I have been extremely busy with work, other obligations, and such. When I do have free time, rather than continue my day on the computer after 8 hours of work, I try to do something else (I have a girlfriend, friends, bands I'm in, etc).
Yeah, Brandon looks really stressed out.

Teall you the truth... I don't mind at all how Chiefdelphi forum is right now. Why not give Brandon a break. He needs it, he has worked hard for us for the past few years. I wouldn't want to sit down infront of the computer after 8 hours of work. If you take a look at Brandon's "to-do list" you will see how much work he needs to do.
I'm fine with the way things are, but if we do change things, making a scaled rep bar cost would be the way to go. Actually, we do have that right now (slightly), I'm think. The bright green bars cost more than darker ones (200 vs. 100, I think.)
--EDIT--
And just for giggles, I'm the lowest reped person to have replied so far. :)

I believe that the rep points are good as they are right now. Sure many people do have "maxed out" rep points, but they are also the people who post quite a bit with useful information, so in a way, I think they deserve their maxed out rep. I believe that even if we scale the pints down, people will still manage to inevitably max out the new system. I think that some sort of harder system will "hurt" the people who do not have as high of a reputation as ChiefDelphi's super posters because it will take them longer to reach a point that the formerly maxed out reached rather quickly. the transition period would be too confusing.
just my .02, sorry if i confuse anyone
ps. now I have the lowest rep for a person who as posted here ;)

Instead of fitting more and more green dots, what about a different color or another shade of green once you hit a certain point? I know multiple colors may become confusing, but thats just my $0.02.

I'm going to agree wholeheartedly with Arefin here. There's about a dozen other things I'd like to see happen before I see rep levels played with again.
And in the end, does it really matter? Back in the days when post count was king, that turned out to be an inaccurate identifier, and now rep (although more accurate than post count) is showing its faults too. In about a year or so...someone will probably post again asking for it to be reevaluated. No matter what, there is no perfect system.
In my time here, I've noticed...if something is posted inaccurately, someone with the authority to state the correction usually comes out to correct the statement. The people with the most rep are most likely to be frequenting the boards or know people who frequent the boards enough that they can be alerted when something of importance shows up that needs their attention - thus either way, facts are getting straightened out. Opinions are another beast anyway - but we're all coming from different teams, viewpoints, and times in our lives - and because someone has less green bars does not mean their opinion is less valid than someone with maxed out bars.
The point of the forums is to communicate and share information, and I think that we are doing an excellent job at that as we are right now. We've been around this rep issue over and over...and personally, I'm itching to see new ways of sharing information - like CD-Media - finished before we think of playing with rep.
I vote to leave as is. I like the limit of 2000 to give max reps. I gives people a sense of the posters rep in CD. It is a firm and attainable goal for anyone. By cutting points, the most affected will be those that have just got there. As people give good and positive comments on CD their rep will continue to rise. At 2000 they will have shown that they have been a constant, informative and positive poster. 2000, 20,000, or 200,000 make no difference because you already have a good reputation.
I would like to see neg reps given for bad spelling now that we have spell check. :D

They're just dots. That's really all I have to say about that, for now. As previous people have said, there's bigger & better things to work on before I will donate any time to changing the rep dots.

Brandon, did you make it so new members cannot receive rep for a little while? I saw a post without a rep button.

Got a link to the post you saw it on?And I thought you had been hard at work on a new feature. :D Anyway, it was the free Nintendo spam post so they were probably banned or something before the post was deleted. :)
/me wonders about the mysterious CD groups and hidden forums and all the other "deepest darkest corners" of CD. :D

Yes, that user was banned but I missed that post. The banned group has permissions to log in, and that's about it. No PM, no profile editing, no posting, no repping, no anything.
There are lots of hidden forums .. check the latest forum we added .. look at the forumid .. count all the forums you can see, and that will give you an idea. (yes, there are some that were removed, test forums, etc, but there are a lot of hidden ones that only a few select people can see)

how about you make the ammount of points visible?
how about you make the ammount of points visible?
If you show everybody how many points each person has, it seems to me that it would turn into even more of a contest to see if you can pass the person ahead of you...which is completely not the point.

I've heard people speak of the system as is with this exact point. You can still see who is "directly" ahead of you. You don't need to see how many points they have for it to be an unwarranted "contest".

If you don't care about rep, use firefox + adblock plugin to block the negative and positive rep pictures.
