"In honor of the first manned Moon landing, which took place on July 20, 1969, we’ve added some NASA imagery to the Google Maps interface to help you pay your own visit to our celestial neighbor. Happy lunar surfing."
It looks pretty cool and if you mess with it enough you should be able to find the hidden joke.

The most important piece of scientific knowledge we learned from the Apollo moon landings:
When you leave green cheese out in the vacuum of space for millions of years
it turns grey and gets as hard as a rock!
Yeah, zooming in was funny... but I'm confused... I thought it was supposed to be green, not yellow.

DaveI think it really is green, but the image is red-shifted which makes it appear yellow. I've emailed them about this problem and will let you know what their explanation is.

No Dave, I think that is reserved just for "Man in the Moon" skits ;)
So, when is Google Mars being released?

So, when is Google Mars being released?
I don't know about that, but i'm hoping that they release Google Astroid soon since the Deep Impact Mission apparently was a success.

Ah ha! So it is made of cheese!
Wasn't expecting that one. I was hoping to see if I could see some signs of men on the moon, but I guess that even zoomed in all the way (without the cheese) it still would have been to low a resolution to see.
Well, here's what Google Moon's autoresponse FAQ had to say about the type of cheese which the Moon is made of:
If you're wondering what type of cheese the moon is made of, we wish we
could tell you. Conventional 20th century belief suggested that it was
made of green cheese, but recent data has disproved this theory. Diligent
research by the world's most preeminent scientists suggests that it's
either havarti or gouda. We recognize that a sniff-off among our talented
Google users would likely resolve these scientific disputes, so we're
working on patented scratch-and-sniff technology. You didn't hear it from
us, but if you get close enough to your monitor, you may be able to
discern the cheese by smell.
Thank you for taking the time to write.
Regards,
The Google Team
I wasn't able to smell anything except the usual apple scent on my Tibook.

We'll also keep constructive feedback and suggestions - we know, you'd like to see Mars, too - in mind for the future. So I suggest you email them (google_moon@google.com) if you want to see if Marvin (http://looneytunes.warnerbros.com/web/stars/stars_marvin.jsp) is home.

It has to be havarti, gouda doesn't have any bubbles (of consequential size or repeated appearance) in it!

Its probably swiss cheese, because I smelt a moon rock over at the Smithsonian Science Center in Washington DC a few years back, and it matches the acute bitter stench of swiss cheese, especially moldy swiss cheese. Not to mention the crater-like holes on the large rocky substance matches the bubbly content of swiss cheese.
Weird, I thought life cannot thrive in the intense vacuum of space.
