I was thinking about possibly getting a FIRST podcast going... any interest out there? Would you listen? Would you want to host?

Let me know,
Matt

Sounds like a great idea. I don't know if I'd be any good at hosting, but I'd DEFINELTY listen.

Well... I'd listen. What are you thinking? Something along the lines of TWiT, IE, everyone who hosts Skypes in?

Cool idea.

MattK

Yeah I am thinking I would record it, everyone Skypes in... we have around 4-5 people on the show a week and maybe a special guest?

Matt,

It sounds like a cool idea and you are in the right place to do it. I would definately listen in. As a Head Coach for what will be our Rookie FRC year, I am looking at all the avenues for information, I can get. A podcast would be a great option. I would be willing to give any help on VEX as we were one of the of the FIRST in Atlanta last April. Good luck and keep us informed.

What about a new topic/subject every week? Count me in for it too, my Mic is ready to go

It sounds like an awesome idea, I'd definitely listen and spread the word. If you need any contributions, feel free to ask me, I'll help in any way I can.

I'd be interested in listening or helping to produce (as I have a bit of experience (http://wusc.sc.edu) with that).

I'm up for being on either side of the mic. While I've always entertained fantasies of being a radio host, and a lot of people kindly tell me I have a face for it, I may be of more immediate use on the technical end of things. I've got a fairly high degree of Perl-Fu, and about 4 years expirience in live sound production (which is somewhat different than this sort of thing).

In a week or two, I can offer hosting on a dedicated 5mbps up connection. (I live in a Verizon last mile fiber optic pilot city, which has its advantages :D )

Once a week, eh? I'm in favor of recording on sunday afternoon/night, so it can be released Monday morning.

So... names....

"FIRST home companion"
"As it happens (autonomously)"

I can picture in now:
"Mothers, hold down your daughters, daughters hold down your mothers, it's your host...
MaaaaatKaaaaay!!!"

Funny, Greg Marra and myself were just talking about this last night about having a Team 177 podcast for build season '05 and thus be eternally known as "The team with the podcast." I have a moderate amount of experience with podcasting(4 episodes of my own show so far), and with feeds. I'd be willing to help, and feel free to use my template (http://www.alexpelan.com/podcasttemplate.xml) for the feed if you so desire.

I'll definitely listen and definitely host, as I already have a pseudo podcast-studio going on in this room.

I imagine I'd listen occasionally (like I do for our local campus radio station). I'm curious though; how many FIRST people are already podcasting things and if there's a bunch, would the format basically be stitching together interesting/related podcasts from different sources? As for hosting; well, being a radio host who actually speaks, etc. isn't really something I'd considered; but, it may be a possibility to host the actual podcast on one of the openFIRST (http://www.openfirst.org/) servers (ala. FIRST Blogs (http://blog.openfirst.org/)) especially if someone else were willing to take on maintenance/organisation.

As far as a distribution system goes, I'd like to avoid using BitTorrent, as it limits your audience to those willing to install it (sad, but true). So the best way to do this would be to have a perl script on each volunteer host, and the script that generates the podcast XML would randomly pick one of the volunteer servers to direct the user's podcast client too. Then it's just a matter of tweaking probabilities to ensure each server is loaded in porportion to what it can handle.

Sounds like a cool idea Matt.

As far as BitTorrent & PodCasting .. A guy I used to work with (just moved down to TX) runs this site: http://podcasttorrent.com/ and may be helpful if you decide to go that way, and want some exposure.

I've never done any podcasting before, though I have done some shoutcast shows before, so I'm willing to give it a go, either as a host or a guest.

I'd definitely be in for listening and hosting if wanted/need, I've got my Skype and headset ready to go, plus ventrilo, teamspeak, etc. I play a lot of games so if you're using a common VoIP program I probably have it.

Keep us updated!

Do you have Roger Wilco? (wow... that's oldschool)

I have the installer...somewhere.......220GB of storage half is backups, but I know it's in there somewhere....

Anyways, perhaps it would help to bring this idea to fruition if we all picked a time to meet in the IRC channel at

irc.freenode.net:6667/#firstrobotics

I believe there's a few links in peoples profiles, sanddrag comes to mind, I don't know if it's still there, it leads to the Java IRC client if you don't have your own.

I'd help host or with technical details if you need help. I have a podcast listed on iTunes, but it's not a real podcast. You can search it if you want.

I was thinking about doing a podcast during build season for our team too. Would anyone listen to a more small-scale one like that?

21-08-2005, 23:39
i think thats a great idea. people could email in their questions or as said before use skype. we could set up a website with FAQ, pod cast downloads and some other stuff. people could use ipodder to download the pcasts or just click on a link. i think thefirstpodcast.com would be a suitable name. i'd be willing to lend a hand where ever needed.

Sounds like a great idea and I would defiantly listen but I have one question would it be a seasonal show, I mean to say just during FIRST season or would it be an all year thing.

Brandon Martus
22-08-2005, 08:25
I think with the amount of off-seasons there are, you could get material year-round.

I think with the amount of off-seasons there are, you could get material year-round.

I also think there's enough material year-round; not just with the off-season competitions, but also with FIRST-related Organisations like RCU (http://chaos131.com/rcu/), FIRST Wiki (http://www.firstwiki.org/), openFIRST (http://www.openfirst.org/) and the large number of others at http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=61 to at least make one regular section of the podcast be introductions to or updates from the people working on those.

Sounds like a plan. I'll definitely listen, and maybe, just maybe want to do a few not hosting but just speaking/commenting. Don't count on it.

bittorent is definetly one way, multiple servers is another. We could potentially setup a sourceforge style network, pick your server.

Anyone have any ideas for:
-The first podcast? Once we settle on this idea, you can build the rest of the show.
-Special Guests?
-The Offical Host? Or even better we could use a team of hosts like they do on radio shows.

bittorent is definetly one way, multiple servers is another. We could potentially setup a sourceforge style network, pick your server.Personally, I think that invisible multiple servers (IE, requests get sent to a non-busy server, but the user has no idea that's happening) is the best bet. Bittorrent isn't supported by many of the popular podcatchers. (IE, iPodder and bashPodder)

Anyone have any ideas for:
...
-Special Guests?Oh!! I know! We could try to talk that Mars guy, um, what's his name, Lavery into coming on and talking about Marsy type things. ;)

Or the inventory of the Segway. He's cool too.

-The Offical Host? Or even better we could use a team of hosts like they do on radio shows. So far we have a bunch of volunteers, but we probably should only have 3-5ish hosts. Since they'll probably using some form of VoIP to create the podcast, they need to have broadband connections. Those are my only suggestions.

Matt Krass
22-08-2005, 14:49
Ok everyone, I'm going to be in the IRC channel at 8:30 tonight, I'm hoping some of you will be there to discuss this, if I picked a wildly inconvenient time for everyone just yell at me and I'll fidn a better time, otherwise I hope to see you there.

How about the FIRST Podcast Network .. Intsead of one regular show .. a variety of shows each with their own set subjects/topics and hosts.

We managed to pull together a pretty good chat earlier, and it looks like we may actually get this show on the road. We have 4 hosts right now and we're developing a site, but we're always in need of help big or small.

Some things that can help us (PM or IM me for further details and if your intrested)
-Topics to Talk about
-Questions! (We're planning on having a Q&A segment every show)
-Guest Speakers (you don't need to be famous, just be knowledgable in a certain robotics related field)
-Audio Editing Skills
-Hosting

For the hostage of the files themselves, i suggest a site called Ourmedia. Basically, they will host any and all media. You then give it a little Creative Commons license, decide what people can do with it, and thats it. Hosted forever, with [flashing text]unlimited[/flashing text] bandwidth.

All free and everything. I heard of this site on TechTV or something like that. I plan to use it as a host for the teams movie files this year.

I would totally listen to something like this though. Love podcasts, and FIRST.

i can get us hosting and a webaddress. for the pod casts we could do mirroring so we dont get overloaded. if you dont feel like making the whole site your self try out mambo. www.mamboserver.com just make a template. gotta let me know right away about the web address/domain name. i can also edit the files as i do have some experience in that area.

Some Podcats (Security Now w/ Steve Gibson & Leo Laporte) are now using Google Talk for a free way to talk to people. I know I'm poor college student, and well, I'd like to maybe partake in the podcast through iChat AV or Google Talk.
