View Full Version : Google chat
It's been speculated about before, but a recent Slashdot article (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/08/23/1313229&from=rss) has brought it back up: will there be a Google IM client soon?
Out of curiosity, I tried a couple of "experiments" (ok, they're boring, but hey)
Check if the rumored talk.google.com (http://talk.google.com) exists - Well, Google doesn't appear to find it, does it? But, what happens if you go to something which you know doesn't exist (http://blar.google.com)? You get a different error...
Also, if you try connecting to talk.google.com using a Jabber client, you get an authentication error not the "couldn't connect to host" error you get if you try to connect to say, blar.google.com.
Hm... I'm starting to believe the rumors. ;)
What do you think? Will Google attempt to take over (http://www.gmail-is-too-creepy.com/) our chatting as well?
P.S. On the attempt to connect to talk.google.com with the Jabber plugin for Gaim, I used my Google account info.
P.P.S. I support a hostile Google takeover. The link was provided to me by another loyal Gmail user. :D
P.P.P.S. Oh heck, let's make it a poll.

http://www.google.com/worlddomination/ you can pick up that same error easily! However i would not hesitate to say that google will develope a IM!

However i would not hesitate to say that google will develope a IM!Yeah, but worlddomination.google.com isn't a registered domain name... talk.google.com is. It just happens to redirect to something which doesn't exist yet. :)

They already have one, its called Hello (http://www.google.com/press/descriptions.html#hello)
If you telnet talk.google.com on port 5222 it used to come up with
telnet talk.google.com 5222
Trying 64.233.167.125...
Connected to talk.l.google.com.
Escape character is '^]'.

From what i've read on various sources is:
it could be made public as early as this Wednesday
It'd be like Gaim and Trillian supporting AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and Jabber mediums
It'll probably have something to do with Google Toolbar too
now the next thing I ask is Google Operating System?

I'll still stick with Trillian only because I'd rather my system resources not be monopolized upon by one company's applications...

a google operating system would probably not be too far off and would probably seriousely rival Microsoft.

Eh, I don't think so. There is a major leap between an OS and an AIM client.
Plus, if people arn't switching to OSX and Linux in droves, why Google OS?

Because Microsoft is an evil dictator, but Google is a benevolent dictator.
Anyway, Google OS would probably be Linux based.

I'm on google talk right now...without the client it's basically just the same as AIM. I'm using gaim for this. There are plenty of tutorials for how to configure your client to get on...I recommend trying out digg.com and looking for the google talk threads. If you're interested in talking, IM me @ alexpelan(at)gmail(dot)com

Google does search. Google does not do horoscopes, financial advice or chat
Someone needs to change that page
Google is fighting on too many fronts, I hope they don't lose focus.

Im mechabunny feel free to say hi! CD needs to add this to the IM list.
The Google Talk is pretty nice. It's very clean. It docks itself onto the right side of the screen and all of the conversations are side by side. It's very nice and organized. You can talk to me at jdkane527@gmail.com.

I am on it now. That was a fast download, for one. I have not talked with anybody yet.

Also, while reading the Google Talk FAQ, I came across some Gmail invites (https://www.google.com/accounts/SmsMailSignup1). Now Google is giving away Gmail accounts... (Well, they're inviting people.)

in case anyone wants to use the google talk with trillian, GAIM, iChat (im using trillian so it is the only thing i have tested) or something else basically you need to setup a connection as like you are logging on to a jabber server. The server is talk.google.com use your gmail login and password....feel free to test by msgin me =) skowski@gmail.com
actually now that i look there is a page that tells you how to set up this in third party applications http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/topic.py?topic=1415

For anyone talking about the Google OS...It's already being planned. Here's an article about it.

It will be called GooOS.
Tip: If you haven't invested in Google yet, do so NOW!!!

To the Linux folk:
I just tried to run the Google Talk client with wine-20050725 and it didn't work. It installs and even runs, but has issues. For some reason I can't get focus of the window to type anything in. Anything I type goes to whatever other window was just in focus. I can click the buttons though...
I guess we're stuck with gaim.

I highly doubt that. First off, designing applications (especially web applications) is entirely different from designing a functional OS. There would also be the legal problem. You can't really have a monopoly on search engines, all you need to do to switch is go to a new address. Switching OS' is very different, and much more difficult (at least to the not as technically inept). I predict if this happens (which I doubt it will), Google will get slapped with the same monopolistic lawsuits that Microsoft got.

Not necessarily. If it's Linux based, they don't actually have to design much. They'd only have to hammer out the interface (to Googlify it and to make it work with whatever web based features they want). Linux is already designed for remote logins. Supposedly, you can actually have a graphical remote login, but I haven't been able to get that to work yet. There was also an article awhile back about Google's entire server backbone running on Linux already.

As I recall, the issue with Microsoft was that they gained an allegedly unfair advantage in the browser wars by bundling IE with Windows and making it hard to use any other browsers. (Try uninstalling IE...you won't be able to)

I'm finding this confusing.
How do you chat? Yeah, I know you pick someone on your contact list, etc. But when I do that, the dialog that pops up talks about inviting the person to download Google Talk. The message is the same, even when I'm trying to chat with one of you guys who have advertised that you have it. When I invite one of you guys, am I really just asking you if it's OK for Gtalk to add you to my friends list?
Also, I'm guessing you are supposed to be able to access your Gmail inbox from Gtalk, since there is an "Inbox" link at the top of the Gtalk window. When I click on the link, nothing happens. I know there is a message there, because I sent myself a message. And the Gtalk client even tells me there is a message by popping up a message from the notification area -- just like the Gmail Notifier did. Has anyone figured this one out yet?

I just installed on my laptop here at home. The Inbox link works now! Maybe it's the proxy server at work?

I do know that I got an authorization request from you (and other people) to be added to your buddy list, so yeah, I think so. I also get an email to download Gtalk for each person who adds me, which is kind of annoying... :)
If I add someone to my buddy list on Gaim, it says "not authorized" and doesn't display a status. Has anyone gotten an authorization request from me? I'm not sure if Gaim handles that or not...

I see you accepted my invitation (as did Daniel), but I haven't received a request from you. (Maybe it's not necessary because I sent the request to you.) But I still haven't been able to raise either one of you on chat yet. I'm starting to believe Gtalk won't work for me here at work behind the firewall.
I was able to chat with Ryan today. It does indeed work across the firewall.

I'm starting to believe Gtalk won't work for me here at work behind the firewall.I saw you online last night, but I was too tired to try anything (something about 8 hours of work and 4 hours of band camp). I'll try you tonight (I am at work now and can't have any IM services). I don't think a return request is necessary, either.

I really like this. Very simple and clean (unlike AIM). The only problem here is that anyone I talk to is on AIM. Is there anyway to use AIM through Google Talk like ICQ does?
