RP stands for ranking points. If I remember correctly, you get 2 points for a win, 1 for a tie, and 0 for a loss.
In the qualifying match standings, you are ranked into "tiers" by how many "ranking points" you have. Then you are ranked by what your average "match points" are witch is the score of the losing alliance.
So, first, it is most important to win. Then it is important for your opponents to score highly (but not so high that they beat you)

dont slam me if im wrong here, but your ranking points are, if you lose, 0. if you win, it is your opponents score. that is how its done in first. i know, just like the league i'm in now, the scoring is different in other offseason leagues

The rules for awarding Qualifying Points and Ranking Points have evolved over the years. Excerpted from The 2005 Manual, Section 8.3.3:
At the completion of each Qualification Match, each team will receive a win, loss or tie depending on the final score. Each team on the winning Alliance will receive two Qualifying Points. Each team on the losing Alliance will receive zero Qualifying Points. In the event of a tie Match Score, all six teams will receive one Qualifying Point.
All six teams will receive a number of Ranking Points equal to the Match Score of the losing alliance or their alliance score in the case of a tie. A Surrogate team will receive zero qualifying Points and will not receive any Ranking Points.
Subsequent updates to the rules made distinctions between the losing alliance's score before and after penalties.

That is not right, you combined the 2 different types of points in FIRST,
Ranking points are the same as a win loss record in other sports, FIRST just assigns points to help simplify calculations.
Match or qualifying points are the tie breakers, If you score 100 points and your opponent scores 10 then you get 2 RP and 10 qualifying or match points, your opponent gets 0 rp but still gets those 10 match points, this means that even though your very strong alliance was able to score 100 points another team that won 26 to 25 is in much better shape than you are in overall standings.

Thats not right either, you got them mixed up. Alan posted the rule from 8.3.3, which is the tournament section. Perhaps you should re-read it.
The combination of Qualification Points and Ranking Points enable the Scoring System to determine the seeding of teams at any point in time.
The winning alliance teams will receive a number of Ranking Points equal to the un-penalized score (the score without any assessed penalties) of the winning or losing alliance, WHICHEVER UN-PENALIZED SCORE IS LOWER.
The losing alliance teams will receive a number of Ranking Points equal to their final score (with any assessed penalties).
In the case of a tie, all six alliance teams will receive a number of Ranking Points equal to their alliance score(with any assessed penalties).
This is why it is important to read the rules for content. Read them and know them for they are your friend.

ok to end all confusion:
RP is "Round Points". You take your opponents score and that is the tiebreaker after overall win-loss-tie.
So if my record is 4-4-1 and another team is 4-4-1, the team whos opponent on average scores the most points is the leader.
