View Full Version : Top FIRST States 2006
In the annual arms race for top FIRST state so far Michigan (http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=area_teamlist&area=MI-USA) and then New York (http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=area_teamlist&area=NY-USA) and California (http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=area_teamlist&area=CA-USA) .
So far it loks like Missouri ( http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=area_teamlist&area=MO-USA&option=rookie) has the most rookie teams, then Kansas (http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=area_teamlist&area=KS-USA&option=rookie) and New York (http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=area_teamlist&area=NY-USA&option=rookie) and Georgia (http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=area_teamlist&area=GA-USA&option=rookie).
912 (http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=area_teamlist&area=) teams so far.
Growth seems alot slower this year than the last.
Growth is slower since the economy has made it's mark once again and you can't grown unless the existing teams are sustained.

I thought team registration was ahead of last year.
915 teams so far this year to 849 last year at roughly this same time (as of 11/3/04).
P.S. The Israel teams were listed this time last year and included in the count above, but this year none of them are on the registered teams list yet.
We're dead even on rookies 125 last year and this year at this time.

i love new york, so i say they will have the most teams.
Now FIRST has over a thousand teams for the year.

Growth seems alot slower this year than the last.
But NJ doesn't seem to stop growing. We have something like 11 new teams and 6 of those are coming to Brunswick Eruption. I don't even know if the NJ regional was planned to hold this many rookie teams. Growth in NJ doesn't seem to stop...

1051 Registered teams
190 Rookies
Several Regionals are light on attendance, however, if you just sum up all the pending (including overflow) there would only be about two dozen Regional slots open. (Discounting Israel since I think that is still closed to out-of-country registrations?)
Three times this total in Championship slots are being left on the table.
Even if you just add up all the un-requested Regional slots it's still less than the available Championship vacancies.
I ran into a team at Brunswick Eruption this past weekend who hadn't paid any attention to Championship, because they assumed being Tier 1 they wouldn't have a chance of getting in. I corrected that impression with one team, but there may be many others who assumed Championship would be impossible to get into, and just haven't noticed it's so empty.
Back to the topic...
California just squeaked by NY, so it's now:
Michigan 97
California 94
New York 93
I'm flattened by the huge increase in Missouri rookies, especially, when you consider the 8 rookies in Kansas are in that same geographical area and part of the same growth spurred by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.

[edit] updated
1123 teams now registered.
222 Rookies
(although I know of some teams that will probably have to drop out)
The Israeli teams all added in at the same time.
Regionals look like they are full or will be except for a few with 2 or 3 slots still open. The Championship still has 27 unrequested openings.
As far as states go:
California 103
Michigan 100
New York 97

sadly, Virginia's growth seems to have slowed a little bit this year. :(
Only 9 rookie teams so far, and 59 total (we had 55 last year) as of yet.

The number of UK teams has more than doubled for 2006...
If you try to look up the teams from the UK, you'll not find any unless you change it to look for Great Britain rather than GB.
759 continue at the NYC Regional for a 5th year.
2 teams from London, one from Winchester and another from Doncaster have also formed, bringing the total up to 5. At least 2 of those are down for Cheaspeake.
Last years rookie London team, which apparently also went to Cheaspeake, does not appear to have signed up for a second year.
So, UK Teams in:
2004: 1
2005: 2
2006: 5
I know we aren't a US State but I thought that'd be interesting.

Israel has 27 teams.
Canada has 69 teams.
Brazil has 8 teams.
and two teams from Puerto Rico (unfortunately Mexico has fallen out of FIRST and the team from France and Austrailia did not come back).
It's good to see international FIRST doing so well.

It's been almost a week since registration officially closed, but the registered team list continues to grow
(1137 teams total up from 1128 at Friday's close).
California is the governmental entity with the highest number of teams (107).
It'd be interesting to list places by the highest percentage of growth this year, such as the UK's 250% growth.
(P.S. We have a signed Union Jack from 759's first year at NYC.)
I just noted the dynamics after the close of registration.
14 teams have added in, mostly veteran teams registering late, and 5 teams (including some rookies) have dropped out. I assume the primary cause is finances, but FIRST is obviously being as helpful and understanding as they can. I expect 10 or so teams might drop out when they can't make the payment cutoff tomorrow.

Anyone know where i can find the total list of teams.
By that I mean the list that has all the teams registered for this years game, and if they are attending more than one regional/nationals, they are repeated on the list.

I think this might be more what you were thinking.
This query repeats the team once for each event they've signed up for.

OK, so I felt a little geekier than usual this evening, and decided to look into FRC 2006 registration statistics. Using crude techniques in Excel, I count:
4 teams (48,302,1114,1503, all are registered for the Championship) that have registered for 4 events,
48 teams (1,4,16,25,33,34,45,47,56,65,66,67,68,71,74,79,93, 103,111,126,157,175,176,180,188,190,233,254,287,33 7,341,343,358,365,378,395,469,519,573,703,716,772, 830,1319,1403,1507,1511,1675) that have registered for 3 events,
173 teams that have registered for 2 events, and
915 teams that have registered for 1 event.
4x4 + 3x48 + 2x173 +1x915 = 1421 total registrations for all 2006 FRC events including the Championship.
Of the four-event teams, two are from Canada, one is from Michigan, and one is from California. Of the three-event teams, 13 are from Michigan, 6 are from New York, and 4 are from Indiana; it is interesting to note that 41 of these 48 teams first competed in 2001 or earlier. So experience seems to be correlated with the ability to muster support for participating in more events. And it would be natural to conclude that Michigan leads all states in supporting teams to participate in FIRST events.
This count does not include 301 pending (unpaid) registrations.

The Kauffman Foundation wants to have a Kansas City Regional In 2007 and insisted that 25 new teams be made available for it. The did however put their money where their heart is...

Are all those new teams receiving other support, such as engineer mentors, as well? I imagine it must be quite a load on the existing teams and rookie mentors getting such a high percentage of rookies acclimated to FIRST and off and running.
It looks like most of you are attending the Colorado or St. Louis Regionals this year, with a smattering of Wisconsin, Midwest, Indiana, Great Lakes, and Florida.
Good Luck to 1653 in Colorado!

Richard's numbers made me curious about the total registration numbers (including the 301 pending teams -now 297), so I'll share those.
4-events - 12 teams
3-events - 128 teams
2-events - 302 teams
1-event.. - 692 teams
Okay, so I have nothing better to do during lunch.
P.S. To expand on Richard's Michigan comments, It turns out 2/3 of Michigan teams go to 2 or more events. By comparison, 50% of California goes to more than 1 event.

im having the same problem i think its internet explorer, it just won't connect to the link.
The link is not working for me either, and I was using Firefox.
For whoever mentioned international teams, Mexico will be competing again this year with team 1401, they'll be attending the Arizona Regional for the 3rd year.
For international attendance, there are 4 regionals with teams from 3 countries, 10 regionals with teams from 2 countries, and 19 regionals with teams from 1 country.

It depends on whether you're talking percentage growth or just # of new teams. It's surprising, the number of old teams that are still around.
Percentage growth is probably the more important stat, seeing as it (to me) indicates more accurately the growth that matters to our community. In 1995, 200 new teams was huge.
Just my 2cp.
