It is, unofficially, the fastest production car in the world.

Exactly what that means to anyone but the advertising division of Bugatti is a mystery since 'production car' is a loose term.

Don't expect to see any of these crusing down main street.

According to Car and Driver (http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=19&article_id=10108), while cruising at 253 mph (407 km/h), it gets 3 mpg (78.4 L/100 km).

And, you think that color scheme is a new thing?? Think again.

http://whitemetal.com/thread/FineScale/h00_00002.jpg

That's a 1930 Bugatti T50 (Type 50)
This car had straight 8 (cylinder) engine under the hood making the engine compartment almost half the length of the total 3.5m or 11.5ft.
Being a 2 door car and barely enough room for 2 back seat passengers it was truely a touring car as is, even though Bugatti made a new version that same year specifically for touring.

Wow, 3mpg. I'm wondering about a couple things,

-How big is the gas tank? You won't be doing 200mph for very long if you don't have a big gas tank. Miles will start to go by very fast
-Whats the 0-100 time?
-What would happen if that was tuned? I know its factory tuned, but there has to be some sort of improvement out there.
-How does the transmission work? It sure ain't an Andymark

I've loved Bugatti's for quite some time and the id90 (http://files.conceptcarz.com/img/bugatti/1990_bugatti_id90-1.jpg) is a reallllllllly cool car.

The Noble GTO-3R is a steal at $100,000 and has the added advantage of being, well, not ugly.

True, but the Noble happens to have a nasty little problem with having to do-si-do around American emissions/crash safety laws. Some (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=126597#post126597) people (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=207221#post207221) (myself included) don't take kindly to that. ;)

Well, I don't know what to do about emissions, but fixing the second part is easy -- don't drive your $100,000 sports car into a tree. :)

There are other types of vehicles that do not have to totally comform to todays emissions/safety standards.

A kit or composite vehicle is exempt. For instance, you can build a kit car and you're not required to install air bags or ABS in it. Todays emissions components are also exempt.

The minimum requirements also vary state by state. If vehicles are past a certain year they are also exempt from todays standards.

The basis on this is that composite, kit and older vehicles make up a miniscule portion of registered vehicles. The chances of something happening to them is low. Almost all of these vehicles don't rack up much mileage either. They're normally use for shows or Sunday cruises, not as a primary or secondary vehicle used for fetching groceries or taking the kids to soccer.

(Here in Connecticut my 1968 Mustang is exempt from any emissions tests. I can have that car sprewing as much nitrous oxide or carbon dioxide as I want and creating a hole in the ozone layer and nothing can be said to me about it as long as I'm not creating a fog behind me as I'm driving. Connecticut also doesn't require inspections on 1980 and newer vehicles unless you just moved here from out of state. My 1987 Caprice and 1997 Camry never needed any inspection although they need to pass emissions tests every two years. My Mustang only required an inspection when I first registered it.)

Who cares if a car can go 250 mph? Where in the world are you going to drive it? Would you seriously take it out to the salt flats?

I still think a Corvette is the best bang for the buck when it comes to these things.

^Agreed on the Z06
The Veyron, I love this car. I hear that it can run on multiple even number of cylinders by driver control. It gets to 186 mph in 14 seconds i believe. 0-60 in low 3's. It has a tail that flips out to provide Down force at high speeds. It has a turbocharged engine.
From some of the magazine I have read, McLaren will still have it for fastest producation car and that even though the Veyron can hit 252, the production car will hit only 218. Only being used loosely here.
And there are proving grounds and other tracks that you can take these cars out to to get them up that high.
If I had the money I sure would buy it.

The Veyron is very nice, and very very fast. But for 2.5% of the price of the Veyron, I am saving up for my downpayment on one of these, complete with an original Carroll Shelby signature (only 11 months to go until they are available)...

Dave, do you know of any plans to make that body style mustang avaliable with the hood shaker from a couple years ago an option as well??

That would complete the look, and then we would have to go out and buy one at my house here to match it's then would be twin 70 Mach 1 in the garage. lol

Oh, and the 65 too.. but who keeps track of all their mustangs nowadays?

From what I have seen and read so far, there is not a plan to have a factory stock Mustang with a shaker hood. The standard V-6 doesn't need it, and the GT doesn't come with a factory Ram Air, Shaker, or similar intake option (but it does have a nice beefy bulge in the hood to fit over the V-8). But you can get them from several after-market sources, either just for looks, or if you want to pull the huge intake ducts out of a GT and replace them with a shorter flow path, or if you want to stick a blower on the block and need the extra room. You can get either straight-forward hood scoops, or a real shaker two-piece set up with a big hole in the actual hood. There are also a lot of after-market builders that have them as standard equipment on their re-builds (e.g. I think that both the Roush Mustang GT and Chip Foose Mustang GT have them).

The hood vents on the Cobra GT500KR are actually designed to get air out from under the hood, not pump air in like a hood scoop. The acceleration is fast enough, and the front air dam effects are strong enough at speed, that the car has a considerable pressure build up under the hood. The hood vents are there to dump the pressure out the top of the hood so that the hood does not blow off, similar in function to the hood vents on the Ford GT. Oh yeah, and they look cool.

And now back to our regularly scheduled episode of Car Talk (http://www.cartalk.com/)... :)

-dave

If I remember correctly, the last factory option Mustang with a shaker hood was the 2003-2004 Mach 1 special edition. They are no longer available.

Red, shiny, and convertable... say, you wouldn't happen to be planning on having a midlife crisis in about eleven months, would you? :p

Back on topic: 3 MPG? I get better milage than that! Though I suppose if you can afford the car, you can afford the gas.

AC Cars just announced plans (http://www.netcomposites.com/news.asp?3052) to build a factory here in CT for their AC Ace, AC MCKVI and AC Mamba carbon fibre coupes (all priced between $90-150K). Maybe if I get a job there I can get a discount??? :)

"The new AC Ace, a modern successor to the lightweight British sports car which inspired the much more powerful AC Cobra in the 1960s;
The AC Mamba, the first closed coupe version of the classic AC Cobra shape; and
The new AC MK VI – this is an all new design which updates the Cobra for the modern world."
