Hey everyone!
Who is going to Jersey this year?
As usual we are almost selling our souls to raise some money, but hopefully we will be there! What should we expect this year? My guess is that it will be a great event!

Team 1403 will be there as usual.
The NJ regional should be really great this year especially since our friends from the midwest, team 48, will be joining us. We are also seeing the return of some great teams like 88 who are from further up the NE area. This is some tough competition in addition to the already stacked regulars. Teams 25, 56, 75, 103, 1279 are also signed up as well. This should make for an amazing regional, only 4 months to go. I am especially happy to see NJ on the first weekend because last season it was torture while waiting for it. This is the NJ regional's 10th year running and like I have said before, I wouldn't miss it for the world.
It is great to see that 1156 will be there again. I remember working with you during qualifying rounds and you were amazing. Best of luck to you and I look forward to seeing you there.
GO 1403!!!

Yeah, it should be a great event again, there are 60 teams attending right now so its a jam packed regional (its the 2nd biggest regional behind VCU and GTR which are at 66) But the more, the merrier so it should be a lot of fun.

1403 is going down to Trenton for the 3rd year in a row, NJ and BMS teams are ready to show everyone how the Aim High game is played. Should be a great regional as always, the a diverse of teams attending added with one of the largest numbers of teams signed up will result in an even better event than in years past.
See everyone March 2nd.

Guess who's doing play-by-play announcing this year? I'll give you a hint...it's the same guy as it was last year. I personally can't wait to see this year's competition.
Team 293 will be there as usual, it will be our 10th year! Spike 9 Will Make its debut at Trenton. I won't be there because I am at College, but my team will be there in full force. I will be interested to see how all the BMS teams do this year!
Spike 9 is quite impressive this year, good luck to all teams!

I know I am...the tenth anniversary of the NJ regional is going to be insane!!! Supposedly there's going to be special event and such going on, and In my opinion this is the most stacked the competition has ever been!!! There are a lot of really really really good teams on the docket. I'll see everyone on Thursday when I come around to the pits to interview you all.
I can't wait. Trenton looks like one of the most stacked regionals this year. Ican't wait to compete with all the amazing teams that are going to be in attendance.

Darn it.. I was hoping you were going to NYC so I could pick you in my Fantasy FIRST league.. Now I don't know who to pick.
And as for the snow expected for NJ regional.. I'm glad the Hartford regional is finally not the only regional who has weather problems now.. :p
And it figures, since I will be in NJ on Saturday for the regional..
Yes, you can blame me and the rest of us from CT who are coming down this weekend for bringing the snow.. I dare you. :D

We have to drive from Montclair, NJ to Trenton, NJ which is about 1 hr 30min drive. You may think that if it snows we are stuck here but no a parent of one of our students owns his own construction business. So our plan is make him drive out front with his plow and we have 2 other 4wheel drive cars behind him.

Ok everyone, heres an update:
So we got there and the first issue everyone had to overcome was the weather. Freezing rain, hail, ice, the road conditions weren't great. On top of that the weather was starting to get bad as everyone was driving down. Some schools actually ended up canceling class, like 56 and 303's school. Guess what that means? No buses, so there were quite a few teams that got off to a late start.
It gets better, the official field doesn't have any Poof Balls, zero. The shipment that was on its way down for today probably got delayed because of the weather, however they got enough teams that brought balls to competition that they borrowed all of those and returned them at the end of the day. As for the control system, rumor has it that NJ had more problems than VCU and BAE, but they were working on it and its getting there slowly but surely.
Most teams that got there didn't pass inspection at all today. There were teams that had all sorts of problems, improper wiring, illegal parts, robots 33 pounds overweight. I talked with the inspectors and they said that the robots just weren't developed enough and had a lot of issues.
The average practise match had 2 robots on the field total. 2. Of those robots none really ran smoothly everyone was having problems at one point or another. Autonomous mostly looked to be buggy too, not too many looked clean.
Overall the game play looks like its a whole lot harder than anyone predicted. The ramps at the corner goals are preventing a lot of easy points being scored, if you thought that ramp was easy to get on and score on, watch and see its a good bit harder. The center goal is getting some balls in and by the look of it more teams are giving up on the corner goals and just trying to make a shot with the center goals.
Everything should and will clean up for tomorrow, but for one of the first regionals this year NJ looks like it'll be great, a lot of teams are looking good but a little more than half still have a good deal of troubleshooting to do.
See everyone bright and early tommorow!

*cough* you mean 1403? *cough*
We looked pretty good, we were having some glitches in the ground feeder (tubing on it changed size in the cold of storage) we had a bad master link on our drivetrain the snapped in an early match, but thankfully everything got back in line and we should be good for tommorow. We got a nasty scare when we weighed in at 120.5, but that was later corrected on the account of the offical scale needed to be re-calibrated, which left us at 119.5. We spent most of the day making sure that it was running the way it was supposed to and tweaking a few things here in there. Our camera is looking pretty good also.
25 also looked good, I love the way they load balls into their shooter. They looked to be minorly tweaking a bunch of stuff all day, but I'm not sure if their Autonomous video is proofing to be legit, who knows it was a weird day for everyone.
Right now the team to watch out for is in no doubt 103. They got there a bit late and left early, but they basically opened the robot up and it ran beautifully. Those guys got a robot that works, and it works well, if they aren't seeded high, they should be the first pick on saturday.
I have a list of bots that impressed me a ton in my head, I'm not so sure about their numbers but there are some ones that looked good, I think 486 and 637 that I really liked, they both had shooters that when loaded made great shots. I think they played defence really well too.
Anyone know how 375 was doing?

Today was a challenging day, volunteering and everything. I was the person with the head set walking about the field on the red alliance side. Anyway, I am very impress with all the teams and may talk to a couple of y'all on SAT ( I can't be there tomorrow due to college demands) but yea, um, it was very good and can't wait for the real competition to begin.

02-03-2006, 22:33
I had the tedious job of sitting at the scorer's table and saying 3,2,1 go...not that exciting (I really get to open up tomorrow)
ANYWAY onto the ?'s
We DO have Poof Balls now, Karin Kloberg tracked them down and transported 140 Poof Balls to SBA in her mini van.
Sara Neid got the update for the scoring software so hopefully a lot of those bugs will be worked out for tomorrow.
And I do agree with a lot of the teams getting slow starts. 293 missed a few of the beginning matches, but towards the end of the day got into the swing of things. 375 looked like it was having a little trouble with its ground feeder, but its shooter worked well. I was surprised at some teams that didn't even make the field...the most promenent that comes to mind was 48, they didn't take part in one practice match all day!
I also agree the the Cybersonics and the Positronic Panthers are the top two teams to watch as of now, they were the only two that consistently performed IMO. However as the day went on a plethera of teams came into their own and made their presence known...such teams that come to mind are 11,25, 1403, 293, 102, 56...and some others that I can't think of right now.
It's shaping up to be a glorious competition and I'll talk to everyone tomorrow when I get home.

There are differences between a real field and a school field. We don't have time to sit and spoof a video .. we'd rather perfect the autonomous modes. Everything else works flawlessly.

Funny story about those rankings
for what seemed like almost the entire day the ranking system was down right through the end so as far as I know no one knows who's at what place.
but here they are http://www2.usfirst.org/2006comp/Events/NJ/rankings.html
top teams in 1-8 order are
375
25
1811
56
1418
381
103
486
As for awards
87 got the imagery award
innovation in control went to 225
Creativity went to 293
Driving tomorrows technology went to 637
433 firebirds got the entrepreneurship
1676 got the 1st judges award
1089 got the website award
Ernie DiCico won outstanding Volunteer

That guy above me is the most deserving WFA candidate off the top of my head.
Great day today, we made a lot of changes just before we left today so look for a new 1403 tommorow (we have the second highest point average right now)
My Short List:
25- Top
103- Three
486- Shooters
56
88
293
1089
224
1156
1676
102-Best corner goal scorer
25 and 486 today also set a new high score, 135 if i'm correct. Whatever it was, it was a really well played match both teams have purely dominating shooters. (and 25 fixed their autonomous so now the video they posted is completely legit)
What about team 375? I know the rankings say 1st, but what about actual play? Any praises? Any criticisms?
galewind
03-03-2006, 20:20
375 was a great team. We played with them, they're good people, and have a great machine.
Thanks for considering 1089 on your short list :). We were off to a really rough start, but it seems like we've pulled it together quite nicely. Now we need to go for consistency to make us pickable. We're getting there, though, and are excited for tomorrow.
We're currently trying to figure out why some of our rc digital inputs aren't working -- our Geartooth sensor was fine before ship, but now it's not. Very bizarre.
But we finally got our camera code up, so...
void auto_adjust(void) will soon be active! :)
Oh, by the way, Wayne, I heard that your team was so shocked and sad when they heard the quotes and thought "That wasn't from our essay!" But as soon as we heard it, Carli and Sara screeched it out. I'm surprised you guys didn't hear them: they're the loudest in the building.
Congrats again :)

I just wanna say thanks to all the teams for helping make today's event run smoothly, we had some replay issues, but I think we've taken the precautions to make sure that doesn't happen tomorrow...
If anyone's up to read this, are there any critisms for my announcing? Anything i should keep doing, do better? I'd appreciate the input.
On the FIRST website, Team 1187 has 4 wins but is ranked below a team with only 2 wins. Can anyone make sense of this? (Numerous other examples)
http://www2.usfirst.org/2006comp/Events/NJ/rankings.html

I definately know that there were some issues with scoring and the way that seeding was happening...if you also notice team 11 which is 4-1 is ranked behind a team that is 3-3, i know the scorers (the lovely Sara) was working on it after Closing ceremonies, and everything should be working by tomorrow...I hope

Hey,
First off congrats to everyone on a great regional so far. I'm happy to share that we finally worked the shooter alignment back to preship condition and we can consistently sink auto now.
Thats just a Shameless plug however now on to bigger and better things, My First question is was match 55 canceled? We were queuing and were turned away but now the Standings page indicates a 20-0 loss? I assume that just another one of the bugs?
Secondly was that open source scouting system ever set up for the NJ regional? We used a new system this year and I have a sinking feeling some of our data is skewed I just wanna cross check it.
Thanks, and I look forward to an exciting Saturday

Match 55 I believe was rescheduled to start at 8:15 tomorrow before opening ceremonies, see yeah bright and early. And like what was stated before this is the unofficial score right now, the official one will be released sometime tomorrow hopefully by 9:00.
FSN is still in the trial stages so it isn't being released for the NJ regionally officially. You'll see it more at the later regionals after it gets debugged a bit more. If you want to cross-reference some of your Data I'm sure some teams would be willing to trade information with each other, it doesn't hurt to ask around.

Btw i was there today. And not to be rude. But i was rather disappointed with 103s shooting. We are by far not even tapping into our shooting potential so you wont see us shoot unless we need to..
but i think theres still a lot more in stock tmrw i really wanna see some of the other teams that are usually VERY good top up their day today, by performing tmrw. 25 what can i say amazing shooting guys.
I was also surprised with 303, i think they have some more things in store to stand out.. but overall really good day.
BTW the team thats surprising me the most right now has to be 75...
Umm also i dont know how they are calculating avrage...
But in our 4 matches 7-27-42-52 our scores were 23, 58, 56, 30
Can anyone calrify how the ranking is done....
ITS REALLY COLD in that ARENA, got me a cold and a head ache!!! But ill still be there tmrw. I mean its freezing in there.

A transcript of the judge's speeches gets you a cookie (substitute cookie for rep point)
The team who won at BAE won for having a lot of sensors.

The only other info I have heard is that the number one alliance has moved onto semi finals (the 3rd team in the alliance is 1279) ... I had limited time to talk with my (biased) connections, had bad reception, and of course it was insanely noisy... so I really don't know much. I will try to update later.
are more news on the alliances and scores?
Here are the alliances I got from Steve Warren on the phone.

Whats up guys.
I'm from Team11, we got knocked out first match of the finals by 25's alliance. I left since I knew 25 would win easy.
Hat goes off for team 25, amazing robot. Words cannot discribe how well they did. Scoreing up to 80 points by themselves in most of their matches, every atonomous round scoring every ball they had even when being thrown around by other robots.
Amazing robot this year, and an amazing team. I dont know if you won yet, but I'm pretty sure you did. You deserved it, cya at nationals.

25 is the most dominating robot I've ever seen, it gives 71 in 2001 a great run for its money.
Heres a short list of what 25 won here in NJ:
NJ Champions (with 103 and 1279)
NJ Chairman's
NJ 1st Seed
NJ WFA-Wayne Cokeley
NJ Highest Score-133 (with 486 and 225)
Bravo!
Seriously though these guys are soo dominating its not even funny, wait till you see a video of them from the finals, they are just crazy.

Nice job Brazilian team with your animation victory. We will get it next year! I hope...
Thank you 103 and 1279! Also thank you to Winner of the NJ WFA Wayne Cokeley while he cut my hand open with the award he still is a great mentor! And how could I forget our amazing sponsor, BMS!!!

It was a great time...
25 indeed had an amazing bot, I was the Human Player for team 486 on alliance two (whom faced the 25 alliance in the finals.)
Good job 25, and congrats to everyone, everyone did well.
Special thanks to team 1860 from Brazil who played this game like it was their job in the quarter finals, semi finals, and finals.
And, of course, thanks to team 375 for creating such a great alliance and doing a great job.

Just for clarification it was 137 points. Also, our team has video of every match (qualifiying and eliminations), however i do not know if they are or aren't going to be hosted. Shout outs, thanks, and congrats to all the other amazing teams, our alliance partners, 103 and 1279, the AMAZING MR. COKELEY, and bharat, corey, allison, neil, the BMS guys, and anyone and everyone else who helped make everything run along smoothly and for helping us out. We were the team (along with 225) who got 137 points with 25. That was an absolutely insane match... point after point after point, all the human robots just loaded up 25 to the top and he went and shot them all in... ended up being at least 24 of them including their autonomous, not to count Us and 225.

For everyone at NJ, what made 25 so dominating?
Was their shooter more than ordinary?
Do they auto aim?
Was their drivetrain strong enough to overcome defense?
Was it the auto mode?
If you had to pick one best feature, what would it be?

Was their shooter more than ordinary?
Do they auto aim?
Was their drivetrain strong enough to overcome defense?
Was it the auto mode?
If you had to pick one best feature, what would it be?
Let's start from the top.
1. They're top-loading. During defense, they took their bot back and just top loaded it to full. (at least 15 balls)
2. Rotating shooter: Their shooter is low but it could rotate to aim without turning the robot (not 180 degrees, maybe 130).
3. Very accurate: I don't remember exactly what system they used, but it was very, very accurate.
4. Strong driving: Their bot, while thin, was very powerful and could push other bots out the way. Their only weakness was they were also very pushable when not specifically resisting that push. That's how we came 6 points from winning in the first match of the finals, we had 1860 turn them in autonomous.
If to point out any one thing I'd say the fact that it was top-loading was a huge advantage (though obviously they did some things better, seeing as other top loading teams like spike or some of the non-play-off bots were also top loading.)
They're also very hard to push over. Those bumpers stop them from falling almost every time.
In autonomous they kept changing how close to the goal they got to throw off our blocks, but they always went for the upper goal.
During manual mode, they had auto aim as well.
Very tough to overcome... It seems bots with auto-aim in manual mode did the best.
I'm tired, that's all I remember at this point.

The NJ Regional was absolutely AWESOME!!! That is positively the loudest I've ever screamed in my entire life. I'm a frosh, so this is my first competition and now I see why the upperclassmen are addicted to them. Our robot was better than I expected, I wasn't able to see it in action when our team held Robot Rally. But, I'm incredibly happy and tired at the same time right now. About the WFA, just 3 words: I LOVE COKELEY!!! I LOVE COKELEY!!! How was the bear hug? Haha. I was so stressed out about the finals, I was shaking and screaming. Haha. Yeah. I LOVE YOU BHARAT!!!! WOOOOO!!!!

3. Very accurate: I don't remember exactly what system they used, but it was very, very accurate.
The camera does all our aiming work. Most of the time I cannot see the bot when I shoot because there are 50 gazillion bots playing defense on us.

Well even once in a while, we (486) shot one a little off even with the camera working correctly, it might have just been how our shooting system was designed. If your guys' camera was working there was no way you were going to miss.
I should have looked more at the actual mechanism for nationals =P

Team 25 was dominating, their shooter was dead on accurate, they could auto aim on the fly so even if you did manage to push them they just compensated, they were fast and strong at the same time. I would go far as to say that this robot was better then their robots from 2000 and 2003 (where they were National Champs and National Finalists respectively)
Congrats to 25 for going undefeated and to teams 103 and 1279 for winning NJ back to back years.
On another note, what did you guys think of the competition? How was my announcing? Was there anything I should work on, make better? Keep the same? I'm always looking for pointers, and any advice you could give would be a tremendous help (Btw I was the one that did the little flip/somersault during the one match)

We are working getting a video of 25 up, 293 is working on it too hopefully we'll have something by Monday night (maybe tommorow sometime).
Ok so now that the regional is over I might as well list my teams in order:
25
25
25
25
25- Thats how dominating they are
293- Awesome defence, these guys can shoot really well too
486- Second best offencive robot, pretty good at defence too
103- Well built robot, I thought it was underachieving, but they are a team to contend with
After those 4 teams it gets a bit confusing (in no specific order)
75, 303, 1089, 56, 1807, 102, 1279 there are a bunch more too
Congratulations to Team 25. Being a member of team 1257, it was great getting to team with you guys earlier this morning. Same goes for 1279, it was fun working with you guys. I really had a good time at the regional. I wish my team but chosen, but eh, it happens. Still feel kinda bummed about that, but I won't let that get in the way of what was a good time. I hope to become a mentor for my team next year, as I'm a senior. Hopefully we'll go to Trenton again and we can try to join you guys in the finals next year. Again, congratulations on a very dominating performance.

Spike (293) had a great robot, unfortunately they really got unlucky throughout the competition. They didn't have a great seat by the time we picked teams, though they were still picked third.
I had originally hoped that our alliance would be 375-486-293, but spike was quickly chosen, and (obviously) 1860 turned out to do a great job. I recall that moment when spike almost pushed 25 over but instead they came back and pushed spike over. :(
Plus we think one of our team members is the American long-lost twin of one of the 1860 Brazillian team. They look a lot alike.
[QUOTE=Mercury Rising]Whew our semi-finals almost made me lose the control of my bowels when Spike almost tipped us over[QUOTE]
You should not have worried. Our drivers saw you tipping over and we pulled back. We don't play dirty. Never have, never will.
Congratulations on a well-deserved win.
Congrats also to the new BMS team 1807 Allentown who managed to pull off a win in the rubber match of the quarterfinals when their alliance partners had both fallen over. Thanks to 563 for making our great alliance possible. We ran into a juggernaut against whom we needed to play perfect to win, and we came up short.
Congrats to 293's drive team who overcame a lot of adversity to become one of the best, most coordinated, most strategically adept units at the competition. You four know what I'm talking about.
Most importantly, thanks to head ref Sky Morehouse for yet another well-run event. The officiating at Trenton is incredibly consistent not just from match to match but from year to year. Refs only seem to get noticed for the bad calls, but I think it's important to give them credit for a job well done, especially when they've made a habit of doing it right.

Thanks Shaun, but Mr. Cokeley does more for our team than I think he realizes. Mr. Cokeley really is a mentor, and a substitute parent for SO many of our team members. I could not imagine a better person to win this award.
I think 1089 is more proud to see our mentors and role models not only WIN the regional, but come home with the two awards they so justly deserve. Congratulations on winning Chairman's and Woodie Flowers! I can't wait to see you guys in Atlanta!

Next, congrats to all the teams on their respective awards, which I will not name in fear I will forget one.
The regional was great! I know I was covered in buttons and other such objects and lived in the mascot pit the whole time! Anyone who got down there experienced the amazing insanity!
I'm so happy my first regional experience was this positive of an experience to make me want to come back... especially to see all the friends I've made!
Thanks to all for making it such a great regional!!!
Thanks to everyone who made the 2006 NJ Regional such a great event. The competition was outstanding - especially on Saturday - as was the teams' spirit.
This was my first FIRST event as FTA (I was the guy trying to keep the field working) and you guys made it a really memorable one. I'd like to add my thanks to some of the people who kept things rolling and helped us work though the first week kinks:
Sarah, our good scoring fairy whose patience and deft touch kept scoring on track (the field only gave problems when I didn't listen to her!).
George, The Voice of NJ - I am still in awe that you were able to work "propane and propane accessories" into the play-by-play and make it fit!
Tom and John, our IFI heros from Texas, who helped us keep most of the magic smoke where it belongs (inside robots and field control).
John, our Field Manager - if it weren't for your whip-cracking we might still be there!
and Paul Kloberg - for letting me practice for next week's Pittsburgh regional on his field - hope you miss your field so much you follow it out there!
But mostly I'd like to thank all the teams who played so hard and fairly - it was a pleasure to watch!

Congrats to all at Trenton, I wish I could be there, but I was there in spirit! Some of you may have seen me up on the FIRST Alumni Presentation:D
Congrats to 25 for winning!
Also mad props to my homes Team 293, we had a lot of bad luck and our record did not show how well our robot was built. Our quality really got noticed for the playoffs, being picked 4th not to shabby. We got unlucky flipping over, hopefully that can be fixed. I can't wait to see the robot in person, all I get is pictures and videos from afar, and during the regional my experience was play by play from a cell phone:(
I will be at the Annapolis Regional! Getting to break into my mentoring shoes, hopefully Team 293 can kick it up a notch there!
Again congrats to all teams and I miss the truly unique experience that is the NJ regional!

There are many people I want to thank for making this competition so great. Thank you to Mike Wade for the machine shop, the field setup and take down crew so we could have fun on the field, Senior mentor Paul Kloberg for ensuring the smooth running of the competition. The field crew and IFI guys did an awesome job dealing with the minor problems on the field[although the problems were very irritating]. The referee and judging crew is one of the best I have seen in FIRST. Next I would like to thank our alliance partners 103 and 1279. It was a pleasure working with you guys. Last but not the least I would like to thank people on my team - Wayne Cokeley, Shaun, Bristol Myers guys(it would not be possible to create such an elegant machine without them), the pit crew, Scouting crew(I don't think we would have had 1279 on our list if it wasnt for the scouting crew recognizing their importance), the programmers and the drive team fellas(Corey and Vishal) for working well together. It has been a blast. Congratulations to all teams who won numerous awards at NJ. I was very happy to see our sister team 1089 win 2 awards this year - they totally earned it. Congratulations Mr. Cokeley for the WFA - you absolutely deserved it.

Yep brazil did a great job of stopping our auto mode the first time. In fact it was the first time in the reagional we had to change our auto mode to counter it. Being behind in the first match was hard to over come but 1279 and 103 both came though and we were lucky to get away with a win. I think 375 team they put together could have won anywhere there a great team and i am sure they will keep us on our toes next year.

I didn't even think to tell Brazil that you'd change your autonomy, I think we were too 'in the moment' as it were.
Did you already have an autonomous mode that changed your position to that or did you quickly write one and load it onto it in the 6 minute interval?
George, The Voice of NJ - I am still in awe that you were able to work "propane and propane accessories" into the play-by-play and make it fit!
ahh! i missed it!
George was in our pit yesterday morning and showed us the list of things he had to work into his play-by-play... I only caught one of them. something about a team chasing after another team like they were on a pig hunt or something.
I'm really curious, how DID he work that into his play-by-play? I'm kinda disappointed that i either was in the pit when he said it, or didn't catch it.
Thanks so much to everyone who made the regional possible, it was a blast!
and a special thanks to George for flipping for our team:-D Too bad you can't be in SC with us, enjoy Philly!

Congratulations 25,103,1279. You guys were amazing.
Look out for these teams at Nationals. They are a killer combo.
They all have the ability to climb the ramp, even though they score enough points that it doesn't matter. They have killer autonomous modes, where they score almost every ball they have, lastly they have the drivers, and teamwork to get the job done.
A heads up, these guys together score around 90 points every match.
and Congratulations again to 25 for their winning of Chairmans.

I'm just wondering, as a point of clarification--did the judges award the WFA Finalist to Wayne Cokeley of 25, or Wayne Cokeley of 1089?

It was two separate essays that were submitted. Cokeley is on 25.

We visited NJ for that great Finals show on Saturday. I found the game in the finals to be very exciting, fast paced and riveting. Congratulations to 25 / 103 / 1279 as well as their opponents 375 / 486 / 1860 for masterful play.
We've posted video of all the Finals matches here: http://team358.org/history/2006/videos/NJ_Regional/
Not all the links have videos behind them yet. They have all been edited from the tape, but the quarter final matches are still in the process of being uploaded. Apologies to some teams who had great team action missed as the video zooms in to get a closer look at the robots.

Cokeley is from 25, but he essentially founded team 1089 and the quote that they gave in the award announcement was from 1089's WFA essay submission.
It's been said a million times, but here's mine. Congratulations to the #1 and #2 alliance, Team 25 for their sweeping accomplishements, and especially to Wayne C for the Regional WFA. Also, congratulations and thank you to all of the teams that participated. You were a great crowd and really impressed me with my first trip to the NJ Regional! Last but not least, I wanted to thank Chiniqua and George for letting me share their spotlight. It was truly a pleasure and honor working with both of you. Good luck to all the teams participating at other regionals and the championship. I hope to see you guys in ATL or next year at NJ.
Best,
Wayne

So Corey, do you still think the Chairmans should be lessened in Fantasy FIRST? :p
Congratulations to 25, 103 ( I really hope you guys come to Atlanta) and 1279. That was a heck of a show you guys put on.
I would also like to congratulate 375, 486 and especially 1860 (who our kids just loved to death. Your enthusiasm is what FIRST is all about. May you last for years to come) for putting up one heck of a battle. New Jersey was pure entertainment (in spite of the glitches).

Yes, 1860...you guys were amazing. I think that team single handedly had more fun than any of the other teams at the regional. The kids were so full of life, and just seeing how happy they were at the end of the regional made it all worth it.
Too bad they dont have enough money to come to nationals.
I can't wait to see everyone in Atlanta, and especially untill next year to see team 1860.
Team 358, any chance that you guys can post higher resolution videos sometime soon?
Thanks,

First of all, thanks to 25 and 103 for realizing our potential and helping us to our second straight nj championship, we couldn't have done it without you guys. Also excellent job to all of our competitors including 375, 486 and 1860, match 1 of the finals was exciting. Does anybody have the final rankings? I noticed they didn't have them up and running on a monitor after the last match and I think that really hurt some awesome teams like 1403 who were around 12th and had a lot of potential but werent picked. They also didn't show the final rankings ( to my knowledge) to the audience before the alliance selections, so everybody was in the dark. Any idea why?

well the problem with rankings is a long and hard one to explain, but basically if you wanted ranking to work all the time and be correct, we would still be at the regional because it crashed the scoring computer. sorry to say we never did get a sure fix to that for this regional but there will be a patch out to fix that in the next weeks events.

WOOOOO!!!!

Congratulations to the winning alliance! We cheered for you guys alot when we wern't facing you.
Also, I think this is the correct place to say this (if not, please guide me to the correct place):
On Saturday, one of the members on my team lost a White Yankee's hat in our section of the stands. We were sitting in the first 6 rows right above the mascot pit. If anyone has seen it, has seen someone with it, or has it in their possesion because they saw it left behind, please let me know. He got the hat as a gift from his girlfriend just now over one week ago. We checked with lost and found and they didn't have it.
Thank you

Me and another member of my team went to the NJ regional on Saturday to scout and I have just one word to say: Amazing!
Congratulations to teams 25, 103, and 1279 for coming out on top! Team 25 was just unstoppable out there, with 103 and 1279 both being amazing shooters to add to it! :yikes: Being able to go to the competition and see all the different people and robots was just a great experience, especially for someone who has not been to a regional before. I'm looking forward to when our team competes at the Philly Regional and is able to see team 103 and all the others at NJ going to Philly! It already looks like it will be a great event!
Lastly, thanks to team 341 for allowing me and my other team member to ride on their bus to and from the NJ regional. Sure, we had to pass by our houses again both to and from NJ, but it was worth it to see all these amazing robots and teams in action. Great job by everyone!

I just have to crank them through Adobe Premere I suppose.
Any in particular you're most interested in?
I don't have a lot of spare time, since we're getting ready to visit you guys in Hartford on Thursday.
P.S. According to Premere it's going to take 2 hours to convert just one of the full resolution Finals videos. I'll try one of the low-res files first (~20 mins).
PPS: That's odd, I cannot seem to view wmv files. As a test I also downloaded other peoples posted wmv videos and I only get a black screen with audio.

Thanks for posting the videos! Of one concern I saw the video of 25 pushing SPIKE(293) over! SF 1-1 My goodness I am surprised they did not get a penalty! In the video 293 and 25 are fighting each other, 25 almost tips over during the pushing fight, but 293 backs off and lets them balance, but it appears that 293 moved back so quickly that 293 tipped up and 25 drove under them. Then from the video it looks like 25 does not back off and let 293 balance, but they continue to drive forward and push 293 over! They were under 293 for a good 3 seconds why did they not back off and let 293 balance like 293 did when 25 was tipped? Not very nice in my opinion..

Have you ever noticed that the play gets more physical in the tourney? It was that way in Stack Attack. It was that way in FIRST Frenzy: Raising the Bar and it was that way last year.
You cannot be that naive to think that people are going to just back up and leave you alone especially Raider Robotics. You want to label them Graciously Unprofessional? Go ahead, it's a free country but I guess the refs didn't see it that way and their opinions the one that counts!

Excuse me sir, but you read my comment the wrong way. I said it would BE UN GP IF WE FLIPPED THEM.....
I never accused them of playing unfairly, yes they do have a history of pushing other teams over, that should not excuse pushing us over. Yes I understand the game is physical and robots will fall over, but if pushing robots over is fine then I point to last years Philly regional in the finals where a robot was flipped and the whole alliance got DQ'd.
For a forum that touts the holiness of Gracious Professionalism I am amazed at your comments. Of course its a free country, but FIRST has rules, and refs, sure they did not call the play, but that still does not make it right. I happen to know the head ref, he is a stand up guy, if he did not make the call that is fine, all I am saying is that there is a point to which pushing is fine.
By your reasoning we should have pushed 25 over, and not just once, at every chance we get, now what kind of response would that get here? People would be screaming how UN GP it was that we pushed them over, and how we played dirty.

"I never accused them of playing unfairly, yes they do have a history of pushing other teams over, that should not excuse pushing us over."
Time to put an end to this now. If there is a problem with the performance of my team then have the decency to take it to my face and not flame them here on CD. The implications of the above statements are very clear. As for our "history", who are you to judge?
This game is not a science fair. Nobody is going to sit there and let you shoot at the goals and nobody is going to let you push them around without pushing back. Thats what the bumpers are for. Thats why you design a robot that is not easily tipped over. And you live with the design you build.
There was never any intention of our guys going out to knock over other robots. But frankly, a lot of them didn't need too much help to be tipped over. When we went over we recognized it was a part of the game. I've been watching the videos over and over and I see more robots repeatedly flying at us over and over rather than the opposite.
Time to drop the subject. Its over. Good luck with the rest of the season.

Alright lets get a few things straight:
1. I did not attend the regional, I am reacting to video, I am at college
2. If I personally had an issue with what was at stake, yes I would spoken to someone directly, I can't do that when I am at college
3. I retract my statement about the "history of pushing" a bad reaction to a previous user comments
4. I am a 5 year veteran of FIRST, I have seen many competitions, if anyone thinks I am naive on the subject of pushing you are mistaken
5. I am not here to flame anyone, I am simply raising an issue that concerned me as a person who respects GP and competitive game play.
6. I had no intention whatsoever of labeling someone un-GP, if anyone thinks that or asserts that, they are putting false words in my mouth
7. If anyone wants to challenge my assertions or has questions and wants to see me in person I will be at the Annapolis Regional PM me

Let's just back away from our keyboards for a second and relax before someone does something that they're going to regret. Arguing on here does nothing, and won't get us anywhere.
Especially after the NJ regional thread from last year was locked because of bickering...I don't think that's a tradition that we should continue.
Let's be thankful that we actually have the opportinunity to compete in FIRST and reap its benefits to the best of our ability, instead of argue whether or not somehing is GP or not. We're all human, in the heat of competition things happen or are said that people wouldn't do under normal conditions.
Let's just forget it and look forward to the remaining weeks of competition.
I wasn't surprised to see no penalty there and I wouldn't have called one were I the ref. While intentionally tipping another robot ought to be grounds for some sort of penalty, I think a ref ought to be most conservative when making this call. If the ref has any reason to doubt the intent of the driver's actions, the best call is no call. I've been on the wrong end of an arbitrary disqualification in a final round match at a regional, and it's not a nice place to be.
The call made was the right one for the situation, and the only consistent one with the way the head ref at Trenton had called the matches not just throughout the competition but throughout the last three years. The Trenton Regional head ref should be congratulated for yet another job well done.
I cannot and will not speculate as to the intent of team 25's drivers during the match because that would be irresponsible. Unless they--and they alone--say otherwise, I will assume that they were playing clean and that the thought of intentionally tipping our robot over never crossed their minds. I can say with confidence that our driver saw that we were tipping 25 over and that he backed off in the interest of fair play and the spirit of gracious professionalism. While I am in no place whatsoever to condemn team 25's drivers, I think it is appropriate to commend team 293's driver for his actions and I would encourage others on this forum to do so rather than criticizing him for not "finishing off" the competition.
In summary, I think the video of that round shows a whole lot more what's right with FIRST (and the Trenton Regional) than what's wrong with FIRST.

ok guys i am team 25's drive team coach (I was on the feild) and i can tell you for a fact that 293 being knock to the ground was a suprise to us when it happened. We had no clue that they were on top of our robot when we went foward because not only were they in front our our robot when it happened another robot was between us and the drivers. What are the chances of you robot being on top of ours right after we were almost flipped. Our only goal was to get to the other side to score points. That is why we spent sooooooo much time loading up the hopper. Sorry to say but we are not going to waste time to play bumper cars with you when we can unload another 30 points and end the game.

OK, it's close enough to tomorrow. Thanks to all of you who responded so positively to PM comments! Please note that the overwhelming majority of posts in this 13 page thread celebrate the wonderful qualities and machines of the NJ Regional teams. For now, posts in this thread will remain unmoderated. Let's keep it that way.
Also, intent of overly-aggressive play is nearly impossible to prove, thus not worth talking about. After viewing all of the video, I must say it was as exciting as all of the finals I've seen there in person. Passionate, hard fought, and solid strategy.
A little food for thought as we reopen the thread:
-GP is something to apply to yourself and your own team. It's never a tool to judge others.
-Having someone make a spirited and possibily controversial post is nothing new. Answering such a post with comments that obviously irritate the situation while adding no real value to the thread, send it down the tubes in a hurry.
-Think twice, post once. We exist here to recognize and inspire while changing the culture for the better. Even if you worked your butt off and didn't "win", don't get caught up in the trash-talking mentality that pervades and degrades popular culture.
-Have fun and celebrate the special thing we have here called FIRST.
:)

I should have it... and now that i have a match number it'll be easier to find.. let me look now... *endless FF* ooo there's the part where they tried to shove us on our ramp.. and we ended up flipping them back wards... and here's a bunch of important people talking..... *ff more* well, it's the end of the tape.. next tape! haha.
wow. match 67 is harder to find than i thought... FIRST should think about putting a giant "MATCH: #" on the screen before each match, it would make this a lot easier and quicker.
hmm... can anyone give me a guess on how much time was before match 67 and the alliance picking?
thanks.
edit:
I found the match where they're waving our flag George, is 67 before or after that?
On the real time scoring screen there is a match number, thats the best i can say.

It was a fantastic final at NJ Regional!
Here is my City slicker observations:
1. Even thought the 2006 game appeared simple, it is quite challenging for the strategists.
2. Many good robot moves were quickly counter by other robot.
3. The use of poofballs as the field element was ingenious (by design or by accident). It made for some really creativity robot designs. I was really inspired by the unique approaches to solving the spongy and sticky problem introduced by the poofball.
My 10-year old was fascinated by some of the "very cool" ball storage and delivery systems.
4. The game was really exciting to watch during the final matches. Strategy was extremely important.
5. Some teams didn’t know some of the rule or was not paying attention. HP were trying to score when it was not their turn. Alliances forgetting about the backbot. Autonomous can be offensive and defensive.
6. Painfully, teams realized the importance of building accurate field elements. Some teams found that the ramp was steeper than the school-build model.
7. Several robot shooters at this regional is amazingly accurate. I can’t wait to see what other regional teams have. It’s going to be a great Championship this year- a real show down at the OK Corral. ;)

Out of the 6 years of me being in FIRST and a volunteer for 3 years for FIRST this was the best regional I ever attended, The Music was perfect, A wide variety of both Rock, Rap, Hip Hop, Dance, Techno, and many other genres were played throughout the competition days. The Refs, Judges and an assorted amount of FIRST Volunteers made the competition Fun, Fair, and Safe.
And to the main head Ref that made the fairest of calls Mr. Sky (or at least thats what his name tag says) He made this competition Fun and Fair, I dont think that many Penalties were called except when needed mainly for teams being "off sides", As for as Robot Interaction is concerned Anything that occured on the field was kept in fair play.
The only problem with this regional was the scoring system, it was extremely buggy, Does anyone test these programs before sending them to FIRST or before FIRST sends it out to head to the regionals, I mean come on I never seen so many computers freeze at one time while Real Time Scoring is displayed or when the match is getting ready to start. Thats why the regional ended up running close to an 1hr to 1 1/2 hrs late. Field Resetters had that field cleaned up within 2 minutes after the match ended and yet to get the scores displayed took forever. On top of that when the information was uploaded to the FIRST servers like currently right now the only matches displayed were the ones from thursday and the rankings are sorted by team # instead of W-L-T and averages. Wait of got it =) how about the finals matches when the score displayed before penalties e.g. red gets 35 and blue gets 25 after the penalties which there was none the final score would read red 35 blue 0. or better yet when the match started the arena controllers never got the signal to enable all the robots for autonomous mode - or - the second period or the center goals would not activate for random periods. We had quite a number of match do overs b/c of this small bug ;-)
well anyway i know that was the 1st set of regionals of the season so you can't be too mad but if teams are giving 6 weeks to build and test the robot completely i think FIRST should also take some of that time and have the software tested completely as well before sending it to the regionals b/c us volunteers should not have to pull our hair out while trying to enjoy ourselves. =)
Great Regional!!! Congrats to all.
I hope someone can help me. My team (637) won the Delphi "Driving Tomorrows Technology" award. I was on the practice field trying to help tune up our autonomous, so I missed it all. I am so embarassed I missed it as well as shocked and happy we won it. Can someone please post video (with good audio) of Fridays awards or even just that segment. Or maybe inform me of an alternate source to obtain the video. I would really like to know what they liked about our design.
Last year was my first year and for me it was just about helping the kids build a robot. Our other mentor convinced us to leave before the finals were over and we missed the final awards. This year I made a point of staying and watching it all. Seeing the matches and hearing the judges testimonials of how teams are impacting their schools and communities was truely inspiring. The combination of that experience as well as our induvidual success with the Delphi award has set our team on a new path of showing our school what Montville FIRST Robotics can ultimately do for our students and our community. With any luck, we will realize those dreams in time.
Too bad NJ is our only regional. We finally got the bugs worked out by the end of qualifying. We qualified so poorly, I'm not entirely suprised we were passed over for the finals. Maybe next year.
Congrats 25....thanks for the inspiration

With the scoring system it was the first time they tested the ELIMINATION rounds... from what i know of... and it happened at every regional where ONLY the BLUE side had a score of 0 for the entire finals... while red was ok... its a simple programing error *i would assume* and SHOULD be fixed by week 2 regionals... hopefully... =P
The NJ regional was an awesome time. While we hit a few roadblocks with our robot, we did sort things out (just in time to ship to Philly :) ) and we still had a lot of fun. Aside from being a little chilly, I was impressed with the venue. I was in the pits on most of the day on Thurs. and Fri. and when I watched a few of the final matches on Sat. I was also surprised to see just how spirited the crowd was - it was great!
Thanks to all of the volunteers! Congrats to all of the teams!
There is one last point that should be added to this discussion in the context of rules and officiating, if only to inform future discussion (be it civil or uncivil) on disqualification calls and non-calls. This thread might not be the right one for this, but I'll post it anyway because it needs to be pointed out. FIRST has either limited or clarified the conditions for disqualification, depending on your perspective.
FIRST did not include in this year's game rules the following sentence from last year's <G25> (of which I was a most vocal critic):
"If the tipping, entanglement, or damage occurs where it is not a part of normal game play, at the referee’s discretion, a 10-point penalty will be assessed, and the offending team/ROBOT may be disqualified from that match."
This year <G22> lists several specific guidelines and concludes:
"In all cases involving robot-to-robot contact, the Head Referee may assess a 5-point penalty and the robot may be disqualified, subject to these guidelines."
FIRST wants to avoid the type of subjective judgment calls by referees that affected the results of regionals last year, which is why they changed <G25> of 2005 to the much more narrowly-tailored <G22> of 2006. A disqualification here or in any similar situation would have been an indefensible call.
