I recently built a mini-sumo robot for a demonstration and I remembered a post made a little ways back. I wanted to know if it would be possible to have a mini competition at the Nationals this year. Just a little mini sumo competition, nothing very formal just a friendly competition for bragging rights. If there are enough people who want to participate I'll research some reasonable rules and design requirements. So if your interested please let me know, and if there are any suggestions feel free to give them.

Just some information for you.... I do not think that you can hold a mini competition on the venue. Only FIRST approved games like Lego Competition, VEX Competition and overall the FIRST ROBOTICS Competition can play on the venue. However you may hold it off site at your hotel or other place (i.e park, restaurant, or whatever place.)

Actually, you'd be out of luck here too. Robots are not allowed to be removed from the premises of the competition site.

I thought this would only apply to FRC robot that you have entered in the competition. If you built a mini robot that is not FRC legal and was going to be used to participate in a sumo competition, why would FIRST care and what would they do if you removed it from the premises? Prevent you from using it the FRC competition?

Nothing would prevent you from doing so as long as you weren't using your competition bot.

I assumed the original poster was referring to using competition bots, since a sumo competition with miniature robots would be kind of lame.

Typical Sumo Robots (Japanese Class) are no larger than 20cm X 20cm and can weigh no more than 3kg (6.6 lbs)...i'd say most of our FRC 'bots wouldn't qualify, and in comparison, they are "minature". However, "lame" is a matter of opinion...

Wow. I had no idea there was a whole sumo competition setup established.

I guess I'm just too used to big, powerful robots to get very excited over a pushing match with robots the size of cereal boxes :p

one of the neat things about Sumo Bots is they have to be entirely autonomous

Here (http://www.parallax.com/html_pages/robotics/sumo/devcon.asp) is a link of one sumo bot I know of.

Mini-sumo can be a very exciting sport. Unlike our FRC robots mini-sumo bots are completely autonomous and rely on sensors to find their opponent. Don't hate it until you've tried it.

if I had a 'bot I'd be game...but finding the time to make one is gonna be hard. Count me in if I do tho!

I'm investigating the possibility further, I'll post whatever I find later.

How about we use modded R/C cars? That would be fun! Put it on a table so that you have to stay away from the edges, and whoever falls off first loses! This could be fun (digs in closet for that busted Tyco R/C truck) :D
