I was in Math the other day and learned the the Greek letter "Phi" was pronounced "fee". I've always pronounced Delphi as "Dell~fi". So what is the correct prononunciation and how do you pronounce it?

ChEEf Dell-phy.

Unless I'm being silly, at which point I may refer to it as Chiefy D (CHEE-fie Dee).

I discovered this difference in pronunciation last year, while writing a paper for my English Literature class as shown here:

Most of us that work for Delphi, pronounce it with a long "i" like "eye", not "fee".

I remember from way back in the good days of Nickelodeon, there was this show called Wienerville. One of their inserts was this cartoon with two relatively mad scientists, I forget the name. Anyway, when they got to an important word, they would always show how to pronounce it by breaking it down into two syllables, and it was quite funny. 'Pillow' for example was broken down into "pill and low, pillow."

So, how to pronounce Delphi: its Del and phi, for Delphi.
Now how you pronounce the 'phi' part of it is totally up to how you prefer it. Personally, cheef delfee seems a bit too dull and too wierd.

I say both depending on how fast im talking.

If im talking slow, Chief Del-fi comes out
If im talking fast, Chef Del-fee comes out.

It's weird. o.O

The Greeks would have pronounced it del-fee (you know, the city with the Oracle). But since we're not Greek, we pronounce it del-fi (long i).

Actually, before I heard it from one of the Team 47 mentors long ago, I always though it was Chief Del-fee (apparently, he used the same version before joining the team; sadly, I don't remember the mentor's name). Ever since, I've used the long i version myself. Yay for Anglosizing?

I keep on accidently seeing (and pronouncing) it as Chef Deli. Either I'm dyslexic or (more likely) food is too much on my mind.

Most of my team just calls it "The Chief"

I tend to call it "Chief" [Cheef] and leave of the "Delphi" but if I say the "Delphi" its Dell-fi, like Sci-fi :D

Just CD ("see-dee") works for me as long as the context i'm talking in isn't music related. And for most of us you could say "The Forums" and everyone knows what it is. As for the long form pronunciation i call it "Ch-eef Del-feye" and most people tend to understand it fine.

True, even the people from Delphi who come into where I work pronounce it that way too. That's also the way I pronounce it and most of the people where I work.
