if the back bot gets pushed acros the line, do they get a penalty or does the robot that pushed them get one?

If I am not mistanken If an offensive robot pushes the back bot over the line the back bot will not be penalized I don't rember though if the robot that pushes the back bot gets penalized

I have not seen anything in the rules specifically about that.

It says you must have one backbot at all times during defense. You also have a 5sec grace period to achieve that and it must appear that a backbot is headed that way.

Edit: Answered in below posts. Somehow read that line of the rule differently in my mind and didn't correlate it to this question.

There is a rule about that in the manual. I read it yesterday... I am in a bit of a hurry at the moment, so short answer... No penalty if an offensive bot pushes another bot offsides. If someone would like to back me up on this, its in The Game section near the end.

I remember reading something about this. In section 4. I am at school, so someone else can post the exact rule.

If they are forced over, or not able to get back because of another robot, the penalty is ignored, but I dont recall seeing the bot that pushed them getting a penalty [unless they are pinning for more than 10 secs, but thats a whole different story]

Ashley is correct.

See the last part of <G26>.

If your backbot is indeed moving twards the centerline during the five second grace period, but is then held or pushed-backwards by an opposing 'bot, then your backbot is NOT penalized.

But, if your backbot is NOT moving towards the centerline or is still in the opponent's field, then yes you do incur a 5-point penalty.

Now, this does bring up an interesting point. This is what I'd call "mid-field pinning" or repeated blocking, and that's NOT covered under the <G24> pinning rules which only implies pinning of a robot against some fixed field object.

Looks like two buffalo going head-to-head on National geographic channel!

<G26> ...A BACKBOT that is prevented by an offensive ROBOT from crossing the field centerline will not be penalized.

Hope this helps

also along this line of thought, if your backbot is on the "back" side of the field, aka is onsides, and an offensive robot pushes across the midline while you are trying to stay onsides, are you penalized?

That is exactly what this thread was about and it was determined that there is no penalty.
