When FIRST gave teams permanent numbers in 1998 they were assigned in alphabetical order using the team's sponsor's name.

So Team 1 had a sponsor with either a number, or "a" as the first letter, and thus received #1.

They're from oakland county in michigan just like us. We teamed with them at OCCRA (local compitition) finals and took first place.

The Juggies sponsor until only a few years ago was 3-Dimensional Services. 3DS does rapid prototyping, which resulted in some VERY nice designs for the Juggernauts. Unfortunately, they stopped sponsoring the team during the recent recession :(.

Incedently, if you look at the teams from 1-200, you can see a general progression of Alphabetical Sponsors. All of the General Motors teams are grouped in the 60's, the Delphi teams are in the 40's, and the Xerox X-Cats are number 191. In 1999, the teams started being numbered first-come, first serve.

Incidently, if you look at the teams from 1-200, you can see a general progression of Alphabetical Sponsors. Hence the clump of UTC-sponsored teams in the 170s.

Until the revival of some of the older team numbers this year mainly for teams that "split" in half or reform.

Also note the NASA teams in the 110-120s.

Did I hear the story right that someone's typo made 121 get wedged in with the NASA teams? (121 is the Rhode Warriors, sponsored by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and 122 is the NASA Knights, sponsored by...well, guess.)

Muahahahaha

Im a Juggernaut! 2005 Team Captain.

We are based out of Pontiac, Michigan. Students on this team attend a Technical School, Oakland Schools Technical Campus, NE.

The reason we are team #1 is, we had a sponsor, 3D Services, and in 1998 when they redrew the numbers, they started in numeric-alpha order, and 3D happened to be first!

WHO'S HOT! JUGGERNAUTS! WHO'S HOT! JUGGERNAUTS!

We saw them in Cleveland.... that's all I got....

As far as the numbering bit goes. When the numbers were permanently assigned, team 166 was sponsored by Texas Instruments, I believe.

If ever you want info about a team based on its number, you can access its FIRST profile by using the URL http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=teaminfo&team=<number>
for example, team #1's URL is http://www.usfirst.org/frc/map/index.lasso?page=teaminfo&team=1

and to head off further team number questions:
yes, there is a team 69 (from MA)
team 420 is from TX
there is no 666 (they decided to skip that number)
1024 are the Kil-A-Bytes and event hosts for IRI (1024 = 2^10, and 1024 bytes = 1 KB, and all of us robot folks ought to know that ;) )
cool trivia

I am Coach on the Juggernauts team. He is a little history of the Team. The reason we have #1 is because of our original sponsor (3Dimensional Services). We are now sponsored by DaimlerChrysler. We have been involved in FIRST since 1997.

Actually, I think the Teams in 1999 season went to 292 or something, hence the Grandville RoboDawgs are number 288 since at the time they were sponsored by X-Rite.

The Juggernauts were amazing in 1999 and have done well several other times over the years.

It is a great thing having team #1. In the back of your mind each year you go in trying to prove it but with all the talent in the FIRST world now it makes it extremely difficult. But the on thing about being #1 is the number of great teams that come to your pit just to see who has #1 as a team number, and for those that want to it's the JUGGERNAUTS!!

Just looking back at some of the old videos Dean mentions that Paul Allaire (past CEO of Xerox) was the first person to sign up to the program back in 1991. So if they never went alphabetical we may have been #1. Oh well they never foresaw how big this would get back then.

it really doesn't matter what number you have. team 1 is from pontiac mi. our team number used to be 32 then we were changed to 47 so hey i don't care what number my team is. but it does get annoying sometimes when you see the number47 about 15-20 times a day. the other night my cousin which is a cadet onour team was prank called 47 times in 1 day

juggernauts remind me of astronauts and space which makes me think of cosmonauts, russians, NASA, Kevin Watson, and the code he writes, which reminds me of programming, my team, me posting here, and my unusually large obsession for anime and manga, which makes me think of my avatar...basically, in my mind, all is connected-they are related.

Fun Fact: While rummaging through old promotional materials tonight, we came across a little plastic thing you held up to your eye and inside was a picture of Team 1's robot. I'm not sure quite when it dated from, but it was pretty nifty.

Being Team #1, we were National Champions in the 1999 Championship.

Our team used to be like team 26 in 1996, when our number wasn't all that permanent. Then we picked out #7, which was left over from when the Oaktownz (sp?) team left FIRST. FIRST just gave it to us because we requested it. We officially became 007 in 1997. =] So this is indeed our 10th year.

:yikes: I was just curious who happens to be team #1?

When FIRST first started, team numbers were assigned as teams joined (join first, you get number 1) our team joined 10th or 12th. When the numbers were reassigned to be permanent, we were given team 319. So it is not always possible to tell team experience by number (our team, for example, being the tenth team all time to join FIRST but ending up with the number 319.

The Juggernauts have been in FIRST since 1996!

That was when I was a freshman in high school and drove the robot. ;)

The original team was 3-D Services and Brandon High School. We weren't the Juggernauts yet though.

Another interesting bit of trivia.....my older brother actually named the team a year later in 1997 while working there as a laser cutter operator. "Juggernaut" was his code name while he was in the military.

I also am the proud owner of one of those. I haven't seen Juggernaut compete since I was last at Nationals (back in 02). It's definitely from either 99 or 00, since that was the last time I had any time to collect stuff at Nationals/The Championship.
