Below is a link to our prototype ball shooter.

this is a prototype using the minibike motor to drive 2 aluminum wheels coated with friction tape. The vast majority of the inconsistancy is due to the feed mechanism. There are, however some belt slippage issues, which were responsible for the rest of it.

I have some questions i hope you wont mind answering:
1)what is the gear reduction bwetween the motor and the wheels.
2)how did you connect the motor to frame?
3)how did you transfer the power? (belt/ chain)
4)if belt, as implied by post, where did you get the matching parts? (i.e. the belt and the other belt compatible sprocket)
5)are both wheels moving?
hope that's not too intrusive!

Wow, good job! Seems like alot of teams are making accurate shooter mechanisms...this this should be an interesting year.

Very similar to ours, though we used a small instead of a large CIM. I'm glad to see that the RPM difference isn't an issue, as that is what we plan to use eventually. Great job guys!
Nice job team 358. Look forward to seeing you at UTC New England in March.

Leav - Your questions are not intrusive at all. As was said, this is a prototype, and we still have some work to do, but the following are the answers based upon what you see in the video:
1, 3, 5) There is a 2:1 gear ratio off the mini-bike motor, to timing belts which rotate (2) 4" drums.
2) The motor is connected to the frame by means of replacing the motor length assembly screw to match the other longer motor assembly screw. These screws then attach the motor to the gearbox.
4) These are standard gears and timing belts/pulleys, available from places like McMaster Carr, Small Parts, MSC, Stock Drive Products, etc...

I'm starting to notice a lot of people using the minibike motors for their shooting mechanism. My team and I seem to think the smaller CIM motors will pay off when shooting balls repeatedly.
Wow, I guess I'm missing out this year, maybe I'll stop in this week to see what else you guys have done without me.

It works pretty well and it's got a pretty good kick to it, hit me at 12 feet away and it hurt! :P
I'm also curious as to why the smaller CIM would be more repeatable?
this is a cool design
i guess that the design was sort of like the baseball shooter.
maybe ill show my team and they might start taking suggestions

I think the meaning is that the small CIM's higher ultimate power will let you shoot more balls in a row. The repeatable might just be a typo.

what were the exact specs for the belts you used and where did you get them? i spent most of my time in the shop today looking for timing belts online but i couldnt find anything that fit the 3mm pitch 15mm width that had been mentioned on the forums before.

Actually, we're changing what we used in the prototype, as we went for the smallest, lightest weight pulleys we could find, but they were not holding up.
They were MXL aluminum pulleys and 1/4" wide timing belts (where the "M" stands for mini).
We're moving up to XL steel pulleys and 3/8" timing belts for a more robust system. We'll know more about how this works tomorrow.
As far as were we are getting materials, I've found that StockDriveProducts.com has a very good selection, and most items available.
