OI isn't recognized in the spell checker, while RC is. :)

Heh, and while we're requesting, why not CMU and BACKBOT (first two I could think of).

...for that matter, why isn't "heh" in the dictionary?

Amanda,
think that IFI could also be added to the spell check list?
I would owe you an extra hug at the web hug if you could put it in :D *would use any excuse to get to meet Amanda Morrison* :D

heh

(oh, Amanda, adding words to the spell checker dictionary has been broke since the server move, as not-broke as it has seemed..)

Ok, I realize this thread is a few months old, but there isn't really a better place for this:

Could someone add "Firefox" to the dictionary? Thanks!

Brandon Martus

No problem.

Firefox is now added.

Speaking of spell check.. is there any way to make it skip url's? When I post a url, it goes and tries to fix a bunch of "words" it thinks are wrong in it.

Any way to skip everything beginnning with http:// ?

Not sure .. it's not something I wrote, just a 3rd-party add-on for vBulletin. I'll have to look at it and see what I can do.

How about adding FIRSTcast and fixing the "Matt Krass" check, it doesn't properly resolve to "God of All".

Any chance of getting KOP added?

Does it at least default to "inflated ego"?

online? It seems to try and go with "on line" or on-line.

No one I know uses a dash in that word.

Thoughts?

Richard Wallace

I thought maybe machanum was an alternate spelling for Mecanum, but when I Google it all that comes up is some people's names. Seems Mecanum is the name of the company where the inventor of this type of wheel was working when he came up with the idea. So I guess that's the only acceptable spelling.

Not really adding something to the spell checker, just adding the spell checker somewhere else. Will it ever be possible to have the spell checker on reputation?

WildStang, Beatty, and DSKB are not listed. I don't think anyone has trouble spelling these but they should be there.

I'd think FIRSTers has entered common usage--it maxed out a search of the forums for it. (The oldest thread the forums will return for a search of it are right at the end fo the 2004 season...about 250 threads per year which use the word.)

levelled (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=leveled)

It doesn't seem to understand the double-l forms of those words, which are more popular in Britain. But the "Lookup" function is obviously looking at a bigger dictionary....

Also, what about a feature to directly recommend words for addition? Maybe something that generates a list, then runs them through (for example) Google's "define:" function to check for hits, and generates a list with citations for Brandon to deal with at his leisure.

Yeah, the 'Lookup' function and the actual spell check don't use the same dictionary of words. I may end up changing the spell check over to a Google -based one, and alleviate all of this. The problem with that is that we can't add custom, FIRST-specific words.

Until I get some free time, this thread will have to do for adding words to our dictionary.

How about a button in the spell checker that says "Suggest" and when we find a word that we think should be in the spell checker we press it instead of flooding this thread with suggestions :)I agree. It seems that would be much less cumbersome than this thread. (Although it is nice when Brandon replies in the thread that a word has been added.)
