571 will be staying at the Hyatt and will be bringing an xbox for some halo 2 - it looks like some other teams will be there so let me know if you guys want to set up a system link or anything. We're also trying to get a projector so we can have 2 boxes going in the same room, but we'll need another team to join us for the fun! PM or reply if interested.

Halo 2. It's why our guys do Robotics. The students brought five X-Boxes to Portland. All our rooms were on the same floor, but not adjacent. They brought lots of cable, which they strung along the outside edge of the balconies to get signal from room to room, where they commenced to play H-2 with as many as 16 people online at a time. There wasn't much sleeping going on Thursday night...

As a responsible adult mentor, I don't even want to know how they strung that cable across non-team rooms.

Who else is getting really psyched about this event??

I can't wait to see all the great teams in action at this first-year event. Looks like there will be some real bigtime machines there.

I want to challenge all Boston regional teams to change the stigma that northeast teams can only play defense...Lets give everyone watching the webcast something to watch...I want to see some high scores this weekend!

Good Luck to everyone!!

The range of teams at this event is amazing.

Any one going to watch will see perennial powerhouses like 69, and 233. As well as up and coming teams like 1511 and to top it all off there are 14 Rookie teams, Rookie all star may be the most competitive award this year.

I can not wait for the Boston regional, a new event, a relatively new venue and it is all in Boston.

I'm looking forwarding to meeting the local teams! I will be in the pits on Thursday, talking to the teams, especially the rookies, about hints to help with judging.

Tons of VIP's at this event. Lots of opportunities for teams to promote their team.
Try to bring handouts about your team.

OH boy!!!! Maybe if I'm better by then I will.
I came back from MD and was sick. Darn allergies. That's what I get for goin' down south before spring ends. A mid-season change in climate did a number on my system. lol

Im currently sitting in my sisters apartment watching LOST, anxiously waiting tomorrow morning to see all the bots. I'll be wearing my MAVERICK get up tomorrow, Friday and Saturday i am all Cougar Robotics. If you see me, say hi...if you want.

Should be a great venue, the Agganis Arena has gone through one season of hockey, and from what my sister and friends tell me, it is incredible.

I'll second that. My only complaint is that some of the boards they use to cover the ice are quite loose, and shift beneath you as you walk down the pit aisles.

Yeah, BU has ice on the floor of the arena. The tiles easilly slide on the ice. Kinda makes me want to pull up a tile in our pit and do some ice fishing :p

Wow, the first day just ended and I can't say enough good things about the event. The organization is awesome, everything is running smoothly, problems with the field are minimal. I love how we are able to we are able to walk around the field and talk to people. The teams are looking pretty good too, the 14 rookies are competitive and all the veterans are bringing a pretty good game.

The most intresting match of the day to watch was probably the practise match where 69, 121, and 233 all were on the same alliance. For those of you that aren't familiar with the robots they all have a similar design (round spiral)

well the bus is moving and i have to wait for internet again

Tim Delles

So now that it is under way and the webcast is up here are few teams that are standing out to me.

121 - Nice shooter.
233 - What are the using so they don't get shoved around when they shoot.
1685 - Good defense

ScoutingNerd175
24-03-2006, 13:48
Watching the Webcast here in Enfield (I'm sick) team 233 looks awesome! Numbers seem to come up quickly here, don't they? I've seen a bunch of Teams up more than once in the last 30 mins.

Good luck to 839 (Go Hamilton SundStrand!) :)

Sorry I forgot to update, but heres my update after day 2. The competition is running really smooth, not many bumps, this really is a great regional and all the time they spent organizing it is really paying off.

Teams that have been impressive (in numerical order)

40 - One of the most advanced robots I have ever seen in FRC, crazy mechanism wheels (soon available on a larger market from what I've been told) as well as a great combination of DeWalt transmissions and CMUcam usage.
69 - These guys have a great robot that doubles as a washing machine, started high early off but they are still a very competitive team and in the top 5 last I checked
75 - My buddies from Hillsboro have been playing really well, one of the best players of defence in this group by the look of it, the 8 wheel drive train they got going is pushing a lot of robots around.
121 - consistently getting better and better
126 - This robot is really great to watch, they have wheels to help them self-right/get up the ramp and they are consistently scoring too.
233 - top of everyones list, pretty dominating but nothing like 25 at NJ, however still consistently the best all around robot here
571 - These guys are one of my personal favorites, the robot is solid defensively and they score points in the corner goal really well. These guys would make great alliance partners for almost anyone because of their awesome versatility.
1511 - These guys are easy great or have a good schedule, I think they got one of the best schedules here so they've had a good share of luck, even so, there robot is solid, with a strength in picking balls off the ground by the look of it. They look like they may get seeded so it'll be interesting to see how they work out later in the day.
My own team is going pretty well too, we had a lot of sauces early off shooting, but we ran into a problem with our gearboxes binding and consequently eating up the battery, but that was fixed after competition ended yesterday so hopefully we'll impress the scouts as the seeding continues, or even possibly get seeded ourselves.
Lets see how this all plays out, only 5 hours until we find out.

PS- The sundial network is awesome, if you have the means set one up at your regional, it really is handy.

Kristian Calhoun
25-03-2006, 11:51

1. 121,233,1568

Sorry I just have faith in Rhode Warriors and Think Pink.
I think all that first loss did was wake them up.
They're going to stomp everyone the rest of the way.

In that first semi-final match where 233 lost, i think its because one of the opposing alliance robots successfully blocked 233 AND 121 in autonomous mode.

233 is too easily defended (even in regular mode), and they continue to miss many balls at a time by being off. Either way, the finals will be hair raising!!!

This was a great regional, the organizers did a fantastic job making sure that everything went according to plan. There was a great mix of rookie and seasoned veteran teams present, which made it a lot of fun to compete in. Overall, I was very impressed and think that we shall see a regional in Boston for many years to come. By the way, congrats to team 121, 233, and 1568. You guys were amazing, you really blew us away in the finals.

The regional, from what I saw of it today, was amazing. The venue was really nice, the judges were amazing, the roombas were funny, the teams were very spirited. I don't know what more anyone could want out of a rookie regional. Great job to the planning committee!

I loved the regional. I would like to thank the planning committee for doing such a great job with a rookie regional. While I was only there for today, I did have fun, even though I was a human easel for most of the day, I had fun people doing it with me. Then I finally got down to do field reset and had a blast! Like I said it was a great event from what I saw.

On behalf of Team 213, The Dirty Birds <KHS Dirty Birds' Website (http://www.khsfirst.com) > I want to thank Team 40, Trinity High, and Team 69, Quincy High, for working with us and for their wonderful performance in the Quarterfinals, Semifinals and then the Finals themselves! Though we did not win, our alliance put up quite a fight against an extremely difficult alliance. And congratulations to Teams 133, 233, and 1568 for an amazing performance at the Regional. You were a killer team. I wish you all luck in Atlanta!!

Glad to see you finally got to get off that VIP sign, the Buzz contingent was worried we might have to create a distraction so you could run.

Well, good luck trying to get a seat at the Boston regional when you come in after a fire drill before the final matches. That was like an extreme sport! We finally ended up right behind the red alliance drivers.

1519, glad to see you guys and looking forward to seeing you at nationals. If anyone from 1519 reads this, please ask Brittany to email me, I had a question.

The Boston Regional was extremely well put together. From the Field crew to the pit announcers to the judges the regional was at the top in all areas. The entire atmosphere was great and the teams were all friendly.

Thank you to 121 and 233 for picking us for eliminations. Thanks for putting up the big points and letting us do what we did best, play defense.

A special thanks to Andy Grady and every one on 121 and 233 who did scouting and helped us to set our auto to play effective defense in the elimination rounds.

Also thank you to Team 40 for giving us all of those sky way wheels because we kept ripping the center out of ours. Also congratulations to team 40 for putting together an amazing alliance of 213 and 69 and making it all the way to the finals to give us a serious run for Championship.

Congratulations to team 383 you guys were great I'm glad we got to meet you and hang out with you for a while hopefully we get to see you in Atlanta.

If anyone has the space and bandwith to support a 55mb file for download, I have first hand video of Blair's dramatic entrance on Saturday morning.

What can I say... I've been to regionals for 7 years now. This was definitely one of the best regionals I've ever been to. The energy of the teams, the insane level of play, the speakers throughout the day, and the general atmosphere all made me completely forget this was the first year for this amazing event. I've been volunteering for Beantown Blitz for the 2 years it's been put together, and every time afterwards, the comment was always made- "how cool would it be to have a regional in Boston..."

Now we know how cool it can be. And it was well beyond what we could have ever expected.

Thank you to everyone- teams, volunteers, staff, VIPs, for making this one of my best FIRST experiences ever.

Same from 571 - it was an amazing match.

The entire regional was a blast for my team. Though we had to face the killer alliance in the quarterfinals we were happy with where we ended up. We loved the venue and the teams there had as much GP as anywhere. The announcer was, as usual, terrific, and the lineup of judges was outstanding. The sheer number of rookies shows that New England FIRST is growing at an alarming rate (I heard a rumor of at least 13 more Boston rookies next year!).

Great job to everyone involved in planning and pulling off this great event!

Thanks James...though it was more the scouting of the students on 121 and 233, and the quick thinking of team 121 coach Ricksta who had an effect on your outcome than anything I did. It was a fun ride that I was fortunate enough to be able to follow along on. Congrats to all of you.

Also...way to go NERDS! It was great to see them brining so much spirit and hard work to the field as volunteers...all while touting shirts and buttons! Way to go!

See you all in Atlanta,

That regional was phenominal, I don't know how much better they can come and words can't just describe it. The crew they had working it (including the organizers, judges, advisors, refs, volunteers, and random helpers) was just awesome and did everything right. I don't know how they can call that a first year regional, it looks like they've been doing it forever.

But hey the crew can't do the job alone, the teams chipped in a fair amount too. Going into the regional, they key stat was the fact that there were 14 rookies. Did you know that Every Single team made Every Single match on Friday and Saturday? It may not have been a "powerhouse" regional with lots of teams that are stellar, but the standard of play was quite high compared to many other regionals. Only one match had less than 10 points scored in it total, Q45 (intresting fact the winning blue allies all turned out to become the 6th seeded alliance) with a score of 7-0 after penalties, all the other matches were higher scoring.

I had a great time at the regional and 1403 is planning on making the trip back for next years regional, and this time we are bringing a better robot. If your team isn't getting how great this regional is, just think of a perfect regional, with a 5 minute fire drill timed perfectly between alliance picking and playoffs.

Oh a quick thanks to everyone's favorite corey for helping us out a bit.

To put it simply, Boston was an amazing event. In my mind, it was more enjoyable than the NJ Regional. Everybody was extremely professional and treated eachother with gratitude.

I loved:
-The Interspersement of Rookie and Veteran Teams- Team 75 had alot of fun helping everybody out
-Special Guests- Where else can a High School Student have a conversation with "The Woz" for 10 minutes!?
-Enthusiasm of Rookie Teams- You all did a stellar job and showed you were more than just "the new guys".

And I absoluetly loved painting "Defense" my chest with 6 of my fellow team mates. I never would have thought I would do that!

Everybody did an amazing job. Thank you all for putting on such an amazing event and making it worth the 6 hour bus ride up.

1519, glad to see you guys and looking forward to seeing you at nationals. If anyone from 1519 reads this, please ask Brittany to email me, I had a question.

Wow - didn't really think we'd be noticed -- we were just there scouting in preparation for Nationals. It was a lot of fun for us to be watching a tournament without competing -- I think I only saw about three matches other than our own at the BAE GSR! One of the highlights for us was seeing that the FIRST-related questions we wrote for the BAE GSR to be filler for the big screen were being played at Boston, too!

I've emailed Brittany to let her know you're trying to get a question to her. She'll probably email you directly; I don't think she has an account here.

Consider dropping an email to some of the people on this list thanking them for this event. Most of these folks hear way more complaints in their day-to-day work than they do compliments.

I had a blast talking with each of the rookie teams on Thursday. They were an amazing group (almost as great as the 15 rookie teams I had at Chesapeake ;) ) Props to Brad.

Fantastic volunteers and planning committee. Obviously a steller group of judges that I had the pleasure of spending Friday with.

And then on Sat. got to wear the red shirt and talk even more to some amazing VIP guests. I cannot describe how impressed these folks were with all of you.

I would first like to say that the organizers and volunteers at the Boston Regional did a phenomenal job. It was as if this regional had been conducted for many years. Also, the refs, judges, and speakers all did an excellent job!

Hey, thanks! It was an awesome experience for me and the whole team. To be honest, I was surprised we did so well. As you could probably guess from looking at our robot, we got as far as we did on the strength of our drive team and pit crew. ;) I think we had the only biodegradable robot in the event! Oh yeah, it wasn't my idea to add the "1" and "7" on either end of your big 75 in the stands, but I thought it was pretty funny. :D

Thanks again to our alliance partners, teams 571 and 1100 - boy, I showed Blair with my memory skills. :D After playing defense against 1100 for 3 straight mathces on Saturday, we had to be allied with them at least once. It's too bad we drew the number one seed, but I think we put up a pretty good fight - not everyone can be George Mason. The highlight of the quarterfinals was pinning 233 in autonomous, though 121 ruined our fun by scoring anyway. Oh, and I'll apologize for my driver for running over the Mechanicats in the final seconds of the match!

I know I have more to say about the whole experience, I'll be back later!

The most exciting part of the competition for our team came during our final round when we got our robot on the ramp without needing anyone to push us since we had always contemplated the idea of adding a little more clearance space on the bottom of the bot and lo-and-behold it worked during our final showing. Although we knew we had jsut been eliminated from the competition, we were all cheering at our accomplishment.

What a great time in Boston. Our MC Blair made the mistake of forgetting to announce Rhode Island on Friday. Both hotel rides up on Friday left me face to face with him and I let him have it . With an apology on Saturday, both Rhode Island teams (1568 & 121) performed seamlessly with 233 for amazing elimination rounds. Big thanks to all who helped us create a great machine and also thanks to our partners 233 & 1568. There is a good chance we will defend our title in Boston next year.

It was great working with you guys and Team 1568 in the elimination rounds. While the Boston regional was great, we probably won't be back next year because we "move around" to different regionals so the students can see different places. Over the past few years we have attended regionals at Denver, New York City, Seattle, Toronto, and Philadelphia. Next year is to be determined.

Anyway, Boston was great, and we'll see you in Atlanta.

Boston was amazing. Thanks to everyone who made the regional truly memorable, with all of its firsts (no pun intended), including but not limited to Blair in the Zamboni and the "fire drill". It was great to meet Woodie and Dean, and it was great to meet so many amazing people on amazing teams... this was truly memorable.

but what i wanted to mostly give kudos to everyone there was the sportsmanship. I've been to about... -counts on fingers- ten or so competitions over the past five years (i was a tag-along for the first two) and in all of the competitions i've been too--with Championship Events at both Epcot and Atlanta included--i have never been to a competition with such nice people. Just because FIRST is all about GP and teamwork and sportsmanship, that doesnt mean that all teams behave as they are expected to at all times. It was a wonderful relief when not only our team, but other teams as well, were embraced and respected by our peers. There was seamless positive attitude and energy at the venue--in the stands, in the pits, and everywhere inbetween--that was unique to Boston, and i hope to find it at many more regionals to come. :)

Boston was a GREAT regional; they even had their own P/R firm engaged. And, it went so smoothly from start to finish that I completely forgot that it was a "rookie" regional event.

Our team has tons of photos if you want to browse through them:
http://rollingthunder.smugmug.com/gallery/1108508. I'm the goofy adult mentor in the camo tux jacket (yes, I made it myself...I'm an electrical engineer...and engineers can do ANYTHING!)

We loved watching the other teams in the finals since we got beaten at the buzzer in the quarter-finals....sigh!
