Lets do what the Rule Clarification Committee Would do.

Check out the flow chart on page 14 in http://www2.usfirst.org/2006comp/Manual/5-The_Robot_Rev_C.pdf i had the exact same question And I got a NO!

Is the part an electronic

Yes
Is the part a motor,
solenoid, pump, or other
actuator?
Yes
Is it a legal additional
CIM motor or servo?
NO!
It may not be used

There was another post on this subject just after kickoff. First has not allowed solenoids other than pnuematics. There should be no reason electrically to prevent their use. I hope to be able to include them in future designs. Add that to your list of things to bring up in the post season discussions, please.

Add that to your list of things to bring up in the post season discussions, please.I'm totally with Al here; solenoids are a nice, simple solution to a lot of problems which we solve nowadays with pneumatics or servos.

By the way, 522 posted a question to the Q&A about using electromagnetic shaft brakes (on Spikes). Let's see how FIRST treats that one; it's similar in principle.
