I don't think so, I believe that you can only use paper to display your number. On that though I believe you can put different graphics on it.

Ask your questions in the official FVC Q&A forum ... other threads have the address. I believe there is nothing in the rules that states you cannot paint the metal, but ask in the Q&A for an official answer.
