View Full Version : Another 3ds max "Key"
Here is the problem,
I would like to learn 3ds max over the summer. However, the person that is our primary animator has the software regstered on her computer. I need another "key" to use it on my home computer. I looked around on the 3ds max site, and didn't find any email addresses to which i could send my question. If anyone knows for SURE weather or not i can get a key for my computer and who to contact to go about doing this. Please help if you can
Thanks

I heard from one of my teachers that uses MAX in his class is now that even if u get X number of copies u have to get that same X number of Auth codes and all that stuff.....so each copy has its own special codes...
So.....chances are to legally do it you would have to either buy another code (whatever the cost may be) or have that guy completely uninstall the program and "loan" it to u :)
Other than that every thing else is illegal and not good..

I know that there is a way to get a travel home license for MAX. You need to download a piece of software called a license traveler or something like that but what it does is if you use max at work and need to take work home you take your license from your work computer to home and then back. The only down side is after you take it from the "work" computer, that copy of MAX is only functional for another 24 hours until you get the license back.

Yep. Read the EULA (End-User License Agreement) that comes with the software. It will tell you the terms of the license and how it can be legally installed.

3dsmax has a portable liscence utility you can use. I've never used it, but it looks fairly self-explanatory. The filename is PMAN32.EXE and it's in the main 3dsmax directory.

You can pick up another educational lisence for a mere $500. That doesn't cover future upgrades, I might add. Ain't technology great?
The problem with a Port-o-lisence is that your head animator guru(ess?) will have to abandon her working copy as long as it's transfered to you. Heck, if worse comes to worse you might even be able to constantly un/reinstall MAX and use that one month leeway period before you need verification. Not sure how legal that is, though.
On second thought, you can pull GMAX and learn on that- from what I hear it's essentially a duplicate of all core parts of MAX.
Thanks for the info. FYI: You can not un-install max then re-install it. It keeps some files so that you still need verification.
