I just had to reopen this thread to make an explanation....
The main breaker must be accessible for both you and the field workers. If your robot should take off with a mind of it's own, the field workers will look for the switch to shut it off. If they can't turn it off, they may end up trying to turn it over or some other equally terrible thing to prevent it from injuring anyone. (in the process they are protecting your robot from further damage.) Most inspectors I know will ask you to move it or cut holes in you covers to allow access to the main circuit breaker. Do yourselves a favor now and position the breaker where it is easy to get to.

this was our problem last year...we had to put the button up on top of the robot so it could be accessed by all of the people that needed to use it in case of emergency...

Do yourselves a favor now and position the breaker where it is easy to get to.

I can't count how many times I had to make people move their breakers while inspecting last year...for some it was a trivial task, and for others it involved a lot of work, such as cutting large holes in the shell of their robot, etc.

PLEASE put it in the right place now. Then inspectors won't have to make you move it, and you won't get mad that you have to cut up your robot.

Yes, have it exposed--but not enough for something to go through a hole unintentionally and turn off your robot. A hole for a finger probably won't slide; a slot wide enough for a hand will. Putting it on top is risky; I saw a team get hit in the top with a tetra last year and shut off. (The worst part: one of thier alliance partners wasn't allowed to start, making it 3 on 1.)

Yea, our team had to cut this huge hole during the competition to make the switch accessible.

The best thing to do is have some sort of guard around it, so the kill switch is recessed into something and balls/tetras/objects de jour don't shut you down.
