We as a team pride ourselves on the fact that our robot is completely student designed and built. Our mentors give advice and watch for our safety. Thats it!

I was wondering how other teams were organize. How much work do mentors/engineers (we dont have any)/etc do? Who actually builds and designs the robot.

On the same topic. Every year at regionals i see teams where the kids are standing in the corner while the mentors fix/tweak the robot. What are your opinions on that?

Sigh...I think you should do a search. This has been brought up many times before. It may end in a flame war, particularly regarding the last sentence. That said, I refer you to two threads.About mentors working without students. (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36962&page=1&pp=15) and Another view. (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40514&page=1&pp=15) There are more threads out there, but posting to one could be risky.

Anything like "student/mentor" should work. You may have to filter out a few threads that don't apply.

having mentors do all the work basically defeats the purpose of having the students on the team in the first place. What is the point of showing the student how to build a robot, maintaining it and all the other stuff related to one's construction if they don't get the chance to actually try it out?

Just so you know, your team is not the only student-run team out there.

Bottom line, FIRST does not put guidelines out as to how teams are to be run. I have not seen a team that violates FIRST's *outlined* intentions before. In the end, everyone has a different view. Just 'cause Bill next dorr has a man-eating tiger that sleeps in his bed or a pink fluffy kitty doesn't mean that you should do the same, or judge him for that matter.

Unless he sicks the cat on you...:ahh:

Wow, this thread could hurt a couple of peoples feelings. That said, here it goes...

We are designed and built by students, our mentors make sure we dont impale one another with 3/8 leadscrew while "Testing" out our pneumatic launcher, and give us advice... thats about it. I personally don't believe that students should get shunned off while the mentors do the work... but they are getting a different experiencefrom FIRST. While we actually go through with our limited knowledge in mechanics and build a robot, they can see how it is done by professionals, and how they themselves would be doing it if they did choose to go into an engineering feild.

A common argument (and my personal belief) about this is that it's unfair to the student teams because the AREN'T professionals that are paid to do this,
But FIRST doesn't think so, and because of that I'm okay with it :)

Sorry for the abrupt ending, I HAVE to go eat something :p

the students build the robot exept for some aspects of it like welding aluminium then we will send that out to be done. but for the most part the students build it.

There are more threads about this than there are Arabian Nights. Please search through them, read them, and then... well, then go outside. Sorry, but we don't need another of these right now.
