This should probably be in the Chit-Chat forum.

There's a school here in Indiana that's the Frankfort Hotdogs. I'de much rather be a beaver than a little dog......

Please use the EDIT feature instead of double posting.

I would say that the beaver looks pretty intimidating for a beaver.

My high school was the Bedford "kicking mules"..that's right the mules. The mule is dumb, not tough, and can't reproduce.

Fairfield, IL also is the home of the Mules.
The Midwest has its share of interesting mascots - the aforementioned Frankfort Hot Dogs, the Laporte, IN Slicers, the North Judson-San Pierre Blue Jays, and my personal favorite, the Hoopeston, IL Cornjerkers.

Oh I think Grand Ledge High School definately wins. Their mascot is Winky the comet. It is a comet. With a face. And it winks. Very intimidating hehe

Well, since we're the Rat Pack, the high school does have a rat that looks like it's been doing a bit of bodybuilding. Lame? Nope. A little bit cheesy? Of course.

What's a mascot without the cheese, anyway?

Rat, cheese... No pun intended

i think beth takes the cake but as for high schools, my home high school is the lightning bolt (try putting a face on that) and one of my rival high schools is the "flying Ls"... that's right, the flying Ls. they have a pretty sweet story behind it but still...

Beavers don't need to be intimidating because they have something much more valuable..... they are clever.

I sure hope not, 'cause they're a furbearer in PA!

There are two institutes of higher learning that have recognized that the beaver is most appropriate for a mascot. They are MIT and Caltech. I am fairly sure (and Woodie will back me up...) that MIT selected this noble animal first.

Here's what Lester Gardner (MIT 1898) said in favor of this mascot which was selected by MIT in 1914:

“We first thought of the kangaroo, which, like Tech, goes forward by leaps and bounds. Then we considered the elephant. He is wise, patient, strong, hard working, and like all those who graduate from Tech, has a good tough hide. But neither of these were American animals. We turned to [William Temple] Hornaday’s book on the animals of North America and instantly chose the beaver. The beaver not only typifies the Tech [student], but his habits are peculiarly our own. The beaver is noted for his engineering, mechanical skills, and industry. His habits are nocturnal. He does his best work in the dark.”

PS. It is University of California at Santa Cruz which has the glorious Bannana Slug as its mascot.

Well Cody, Fort Lauderdale High School never originally had a mascot but they had a killer track team. The track team was so good that a newspaper writer once wrote "look at those flying Ls" (they had a big L on their shirts). And so, Fort Lauderdale has been the "Flying Ls" ever since. Don't know when, exactly, that but Fort Lauderdale is the oldest school in our county (i think our school takes second for like 52 years or something).

(Note: South Florida is new. it was like underwater a few years ago --hyperbole-- so give it some slack)

The mascot for the science olympiad team at our school is a slug... they have it all over their clothes, which says they are the "LM slugs."

As for the oldest school, parts of our school were build almost a hundred years ago. Its so old that they can't knock it that part of the school down if they ever decide whether to build a new school or not.

Our mascot is the martian. It is suposed to be like the greek god of war but all the people we compete against ask if it is like the alien. Durand high school about an hour away has the weirdest mascot though, the railroaders because they have a train in their town.

My school's mascot is the Trailblazer. Interesting, right? Go Blazers! (Oh yes, our marching band is knows as 'The Marching Scots'.

Ah, you people are forgetting the best one...

The Yuma Criminals...

The first year at the new location, the Yuma High football team traveled to Phoenix to play the Coyotes. Yuma High School won the game in the last seconds. A Phoenix Newspaper sports reporter was standing on the home team side and as they were leaving he overheard a lady say: "It was just criminal the way they stole that game." As you can guess, the next day in the Phoenix newspaper's sport section the headline read: "The Yuma High Criminals stole a Game." We were upset at the time, but after awhile, the "Criminals" wore their name with pride. In 1917, the nickname was officially adopted and Yuma High became the home of the Criminals.

As for colleges, after getting my undergrad at Kent State "The Golden Flashes" I received my masters from the University of Akron which are the "Zips"

well at my high school we used to be the redskins about five or six years ago and our nickname was the "reds". but then since the mascots can't be native american related, we had to lose the redskins name and adopt a new mascot a year later but we were still the reds. The school adopted the bulldog as the mascot, yeah but, guess what? we're still called the "reds" so I don't consider us an animal, I consider us a color. yay, we're a color. I like being called a red than a bulldog.

I was mascot last year for the robotics team and i was a ninja/samurai. My school has 30 different teams with 30 different names, so theres no one mascot/name. However, i believe the official school mascot is a pirate with a pegleg after Peter Stuyvesant.

our school's mascot:

Magic!!!!!!!!!!

How on earth do you represent that?? Lame much? Usually we just have some girls running around in spandex and capes and tutus yelling and whatnot.

At a student council election speech last year:

"And we propose having a SOLID mascot. As in something you can actually see, and cheer for."

Now you see why we're the Firebirds. and NOT the magic.

(i've got the magic inside)

i'm on 433 too, and magic as a mascot is pretty sad! although really funny at times, there is no logical way of representing it! a beaver is definitly better! but hey, maybe thats just me... :D

Wilson Magnet is a Wildcat.
Back when Wilson was known as West High they were called the Occidentals and their rival school was East High (team 1567) who are known as the Oreintals.

My alma mater, Irmo High School, is home to the fighting Yellow Jackets. (The mascot itself, oddly enough, is more huggable than fightable.) The colors, somewhat naturally, are black and gold.

The other two schools that make up 1293 are rival Dutch Fork High, home of the Silver Foxes (which gave rise to all manner of "Why be silver when you can be gold?" jokes), and the smaller, further-away Chapin High School, home of the Eagles.

My current institution (no, not that kind of institution), the University of South Carolina, is home to the Fighting Gamecocks. (This link (http://www.sc.edu/usc/gamecock.html) explains it better than I can.)

Weird. I was pretty sure our school prided ourself on being the only school in the country with a mule as its mascot. Oh well...better hope we do good at GLR so our school has something else to shoot for.
