Is anybody following this playoff matchup? I sure as heck am, being from a suburb 30 minutes from detroit, so I'm obligated. GO WINGS! We stomped the Avs today in game one, 5 to 3, McCarty was able to score 3 goals, achieving his first ever hat trick!
LETS GO WINGS! BRING STANLEY BACK HOME!

"The Red Wings spent their day off filling out Social Security forms and restocking their metamucil. Yes its another typical day off for the Detroit Red Wings."
If by some way that travesty of a team wins this year, you know that many of them will be retiring, and Typical Detroit will spend another 40 years or so rebuilding so they can even have a remote chance of winning...

^^^bah.
i'm ignoring most of this post, cause apparently some peoples' brains were fried at Nationals, because they are cheering for the Red Wings.
Did anyone read the interview about how the Wings are "anything but cocky"
HAHAHHA YEAH RIGHT!#@!
Then they went on to say how Roy is amazing and how the Avalanche are the most respected team in the NHL by the Red Wing players....at least they have some things right.

Alright everyone, here's my take:
The NHL playoffs would not be the same if the Avalanche and the Red Wings didn't play each other. That said, to all you Red Wings Fans (myself included): Be careful! Be very Careful! Not too long ago the Wings were up 2 games to 0 and lost 4 straight! Colorado makes me very nervous and Roy will always have 1 bad game against Detroit. Personally, I think Roy played a great game until McCarty got in his head. Also remember that any player who can miss the whole season and then dominate in the playoffs like Forsberg can, is a force to be reckoned with.
Now, all you Avalanche fans: The Red Wings are the team to beat this year! If you can't see that, then you are blinded by ego, or you just don't really follow hockey. The Wings may have many older players, but they are still skating circles around most of the younger players in the league.
And to all you Illinois and Indiana people cheering for the Avalanche: Shame on you!!
Anyway, my pick is Detroit in 7 games and 3 of the games will be O.T.

Even if Colorado loses this year, they will be a top contender for years to come, once Detroit's old men retire soon, they will be the laughing stock of the NHL for years to come...

Oh young D.J. Your lack of hockey knowledge is showing. True, The wings stacked the team full of older greats this year. However, the Red Wing's farm club is one of the most extensive in all of the NHL. Take Mattieu Dandenau, Sean Avery, and Jason Williams .. they are all from the Red Wings farm system. Avery isn't even playing in the playoffs, but he is good (a little scrapper, too). Also, free agents are going to come flocking to the Wings. When Hasek retires, Curtis Joseph will probably come here next year (I'll even bet on that one), and other free agents will, too.
One more thing, Roy has been playing in the league 18 years; he will retire in the years to come; Sakic will hang it up when Yzerman does. Igor Larionov (oldest guy in the league) has been less of an impact this year and the Wings really won't miss him that much. Robataille and Hull were only gap fillers (great gap fillers) until the younger farm club players come of age.
Don't count Detroit out after this year
D.J. Fluck
20-05-2002, 13:22
I admitt that the wings do have the best defence right now, but they are fairly old, and there arent that many decent defencemen comming up from the NCAA or the farm teams...
The NHL will have a defenceman shortage in the next few years
Plus: Im not too impressed with most Farm Clubs
Except the Hershey Bears....and a few others
Cinncinnati usually has a good club, along with the Manitoba Moose Club, and im sure im forgetting others
Example:
Brent Gretzky, yes the nephew of the great one. He was supposedly supposed to be as good or better than his Uncle, but he has been around for many years in the farm club and has been really quiet....

"Darren McCarty had a hat trick in Game 1. Maltby and Devereaux added goals in Monday's game. Stars like Steve Yzerman, Brendan Shanahan, Sergei Fedorov and Luc Robitaille have yet to score against Colorado." Source: NHL.com

D.J.,
You missed a good game. Both goaltenders have had better games. The Ave's definitely outplayed the Wings, but Roy almost let them back in. In my opinion, the Ave's should have won that game 3 to 2. Although Maltby made Roy drop his shorts on the shorthanded goal. Drury's goal to win in O.T. was one of the prettiest goals I've seen in a while.
Update on my prediction: 7 games Det wins (3 games go to O.T.)
Well, 1 O.T. game already. Series tied 1 - 1.
Time will tell ....
Series will be tied 2-2 going back to Detroit.

Is Hasak choking? Maybe... he's had bad games before, and he usually picks right back in up the next game. At least he didn't kick the puck into his own goal :D

Well, the Wings took game 3. 2 to 1 in O.T. Update on my prediction: I said 3 O.T.s; it looks like it will be 4 or 5. For those of you who are not into hockey, you are missing one of the best rivalries in sports. There are about 16 future hall of famers on the ice between Colorado and Detroit. These guys are some of the best athletes in all of hockey. So if you are reading this and are not a big hockey fan, watch at 3:00pm Eastern Time on Saturday.

Detroit didnt win that game on their own...they now have to rely on moronic defensemen to score their goals for them... DARN YOU Greg de Vries!!!!!!! knocking the puck off of Luc Robitaille's skate....oo yeah that takes talent....morons...

Bah, dont count them out yet, its only been 3 games.....Detroit was huffin and puffin in the high altitudes....they can't take much more up there
Anyone catch the Rick Reilly column in the new sports illustrated....its great
heres some highlights:
"If detroit doesn't win, do you realize how many detroit fans will try to kill themselves by jumping out the windows of basement apartments?"
"Detroit has a great owner. He might have a team full of guys who couldn't find downtown detroit with a GPS....."
"I hated their little lawn gnome of a coach Scotty Bowman. I hatd their Moscow-Red uniforms (wheres Joe mccarthy when you need him(D.J.'s addition)). And I hate their spoiled brat owner who simply writes a check and steal whichever stars he fancies from whatever organizations molded him.....What happened Detroit? You couldn't come to terms with Gretzky?!"

Hey D.J.,
Maybe Detroit should sit Yzerman out for the whole season so he will be fresh for the playoffs(huh, Forsberg, huh). The Aves are a good team and I am not counting them out, but they have been relying on Roy too long and I think that well is drying up.
-Paul
D.J. Fluck
24-05-2002, 10:44
yes maybe...but detroit needs to bench Steve, Sergi, Brendon, and Luc who have done absolutely nothing this series....Federov is on a 9 (?) game scoring slump and Luc Robitaille's only goal wasn't even his (DARN YOU GREG DE VRIES!)..so far this has been a disapointing series on both sides becuase both teams have played tons better....if Colorado didnt go to 7 with the Sharks and they were more rested it would be 3-0 Avs....Detroit is playing bad, but Colorado is playing as bad and sometimes worse....i have a feeling this is going to 7 and rhe rest of the games will be in overtime due to the lack of scoring, or too much scoring.
Anyone counting out the Leaves yet?
Down 3-1....i think its going to 6 before Carolina taks it
Paul Copioli
24-05-2002, 10:52
Yep. That was the shots on goal total for game 3.
Roy actually had decent game. The Wings dominated most of the 2nd period and all of the 3rd. The Wings had 13 shots on goal in the O.T. to Colorado's 4.
These are the best 2 teams in hockey and the defenses (for the most part) are making the offenses look worse than they are.
Oh, and about Yzerman, he is playing hurt. If Forsberg was hurt like Yzerman is, he would sit out the whole season .. Oh wait ...
D.J. Fluck
24-05-2002, 15:55
hahahaha
No.
Anyway there is such a thing as comming back too early...careers have been ruined due to people comming back too soon before they were healed and then they re-injure the injury and it gets worse....Peter was playing it out and making sure that both of his feet were ok...anyway he wanted to get back on the ice the day after he had his appendix removed....which is crazy if you ask me

2001 Colorado Avalanche (Patrick Roy )
1998 Detroit Red Wings (Steve Yzerman)
1997 Detroit Red Wings (Mike Vernon)
1996 Colorado Avalanche (Joe Sakic)
Take a quick gander at the revelent winnings of the cup recently. You accuse detroit of relying on our vets, which I dont think is wrong but look at the Avs there doing the same. relying on theirs so dont be the pot that calls the kettle black. I think that these are two kick (insert generic term for glutious maximus here) teams and some great hockey eh? but there will be a winner of the series and taking each team for its merrit
I think the Wings will emerge triumphant!!!

I may be biased, but thats absolutely true...Colorado hasn't lost a Game 7 since 2000 Western Conference Finals against Dallas.....and the dominator has never won a game 7 out of a few attempts...of course he was with buffalo though...
anyway about last nights game
Both teams played bad, its just that Colorado played worse and Detroit finally woke up and realized they aren't gods...
still i still back what ive said all along:
Detroit is overrated!
Dave Hurt
30-05-2002, 11:07
Hmmm... Detroit overrated? I don't think so. The wonderful thing about hockey is that anything can happen, no matter how good a team is. Look at Carolina... who actually thought they would make it all the way to the finals? Anyhow, Colorado is tired and hurt. Look at how many of their players are injured. I think playing 3 7 game series is finally catching up to them. As well, no team has ever won that many 7 game series in a row. Colorado is tired and Detroit still has plenty of energy left. Should be a good game tommorrow.

Well, if Colorado can't take a physical game against a bunch of old guys, well.... I won't go there. Anyhow, the Red Wings got their name from the team they origionally came from. I don't remember the specifics, but it was a Canadian team. Anyways, as for the Red Wing shoes, they are named after the city where they are made, Red Wing, Minnesota. A little bit different. Once again I say, Detroit is not overrated. Anything can happen in hockey, that's what makes it the best sport out there.

Ok, here's my theory.
What better way to embarras the team that's been a thorn in their sides for a while? Scotty Bowman is a genius when it comes to coaching. I don't think of any better theory then revenge. Take Colorado along, and crush them horribly in game 7. With how much experience the Wings have, do you really think they don't know how to play the game? That's my theory at least... flame it if you like, but I'm sticking to it.

Anyway, like I said earlier, Colorado played like crap and game 7 was a total disgrace to the state of Colorado, it was a terrible way to go, but Colorado has the upcomming talent and plenty of youth to cover in the future once Joe Sakic and Patrick Roy hang up the skates

Yeah that last reply was out of impulse and frustration...after thinking about it I figured out what I really want to say..
I have no reason to blame the players of Detroit, they are doing nothing wrong, they have a ton of talent on that team, even though they are aged...You have to have one good owner to get Dominick Hasek, Sergi Federov, Steve Yzerman, and many others on a team together....In a radical way, I basically said in previous posts, that Detroit will spend forever rebuilding...once their superstars retire, get traded, or move on as free agents, Detroit will have a big gap to fill. The only complaint about Detroit is the strategy of the Front Office...They come close to the salary cap by filling the team with heavy talent...the problem, most of them are on their way out of the NHL in a few years....The owners of Detroit are going to disapoint their fans when this happens, becuase you cannot rebuild a team to what they were, no matter what kind or how good of owner you are. Colorado is playing it smart by sacrificing a few stanley cups this year and most likely next year, but they still will be a top contender and when they finally get their act together and stop relying on the goalie to carry them they will become a very strong team..
Why?
Their roster has a wide variety of age, and they have some good young men who are going to make it big and possibly be the next Dominick Hasek, Patrick Roy, Steve Yzerman, and Joe Sakic...
Summary
Detroit has a great team right now, but the front office isn't planning their future really well...Colorado's owners could teach them a lesson or two. Once Detroit's superstars retire, the fans will be disapointed when they aren't as good for the next few years
Good Luck to Detroit and Carolina, and may the best team on the ice win.
Finally:
To Matt Attallah, Dan Levin, Dave Hurt, and whoever else I angered with my thoughts, I apologize, lets put this childish arguement behind us and move on...
