I'm enabling CD-Media .. things may show errors or be generally screwy for the next 30-60 minutes. Bear with me.

CD-Media is up! Finally!

I think it was last June when I made an announcement, letting you know that the days of not being able to search the white papers and picture galleries was over! 9 months later, ta-da.

First, I'll answer some FAQ:

Q: Is it done?
A: It is in a state that more than replaces the current photo/paper system.

Q: Can I use it?
A: Please do -- the old ones are gone.

Q: What if I find a problem?
A: Send me a PM with a detailed description of what you were doing, what browser you are using, what OS, and any information you can provide. Exact error messages are extremely helpful.

Q: How do I edit information?
A: If you uploaded the image/paper, then you can edit it. Click the title, description, or excerpt and the edit form will appear. Click 'Save' or 'Cancel' and you're done.

Q: What's a tag?
A: There is a bunch of info about tags in the FAQ (link up top). A tag is basically a keyword (or very small phrase) that will help group similar images, and make things very easily searchable. You can add a tag by clicking the tag button (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/images/cdm_tag.gif).

Q: How do I get a Who-Am-I picture?
A: Upload an image. Give it the "Who Am I?" tag (double-quotes are required). Click the nametag (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/images/cdm_whoami.gif).

Q: How do I change my Who-Am-I?
A: Click the nametag (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/images/cdm_whoami.gif) on any of your images, tagged with "Who Am I?".

Q: I see an incorrect tag -- what do I do?
A: Click the vote button (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/images/cdm_vote.gif). Four unanimous votes pushes the change .. otherwise majority rules after 2 weeks (time/amt subject to change).

Q: What is the naming scheme for tagging a team (or team's bot) that appears in a picture?
A: frc47 .. frc234 .. frc229 .. frc111 .. fll25 .. fvc23 .. etc.

I have a lot of improvements and enhancements planned, but I wanted to get this out and start getting some feedback, bug reports, and make life easier when searching for things.

A few of the features that are new or improved, compared to the old systems:
1) Upload multiple images at a time.
2) Attach multiple files to a white paper, without having to zip them up.
3) Searching.
4) Tagging.

What now?

Tagging. The White Papers are in desperate need of tagging.

Voting. Keep an eye on new tags .. when voting is available, the icon will show up. I will make a page, eventually, that you can visit to vote on pending tags.

Feedback & Suggestions. Let me know what is confusing, what needs improvements, what you like, what you don't like, what's broken, etc.

Improvements:

1) Already, I see that the tag cloud (the list of tags, where the more common ones are larger) is going to need to change. I wasn't thinking when I did it, and will be redesigning it tomorrow night. It kind of works, but not really.

2) When creating the square (small) thumbnails, it may chop it weird -- I'm working on a 're-thumbnail' option that lets you choose whether to take the sqaure chunk at the top, middle, or bottom of the image.

Well that would answer a few questions. Thanks for all the work even late at night. Keep it up, can't wait for CD-Media to be in full swing.

Is that where the Who-Am-I pictures went?

Guess so.

Yes. It's missing on purpose, but it looks like I accidentally lost the who-am-i data also .. I'm going to try my best to get it back. (your newest who-am-i will be set, you can always change it in CD-Media, so .. no biggie.)

I added tags to http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/20681 (frc841 and "Regional Chairman's Award") and they showed up as hyphens!

(Should this be in the "Forum Help / Comments / Suggestions" sub-forum, now that CD-Media is live?)

so i am really digging the fact that everyone's wai photo reverted to the first one that they updated....i mean look at big mikes (when he was little mike, which is still bigger then big Greg). Just wondering if everyone has to go in and change them or you can do a system wide setting and change them.

Tags -- these are a cool new feature, but it looks like there are still a few bugs to work out.

I tried to add the tag "frc663" to the photo at http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/23495 but it instead results in a "-" being added to the tag list. I see that others have had similar problems on other photos.

Another tag quirk -- the photo at http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/23472 was incorrectly tagged with "frc1296" but I don't see any way to delete the incorrect tag.

Something to add about this, it seems to be connected to tags that were already added. For example, FRC111 would appear, because there have already been pictures with it tagged, while FRC217 would appear as a "-" because the tag doesn't exist yet(?)

::Update Edit:: Now FRC217 works as a tag. Maybe it takes a few seconds to get into the system? Still had to retag all of the "-" tags though.

If you go to the item's page and click on the little voting button in the tag window you can "vote" on the validity of that tag. As Brandon mentioned in his FAQ (above) -Four unanimous votes pushes the change .. otherwise majority rules after 2 weeks (time/amt subject to change).

I just fixed the '-' .. I'll have to hunt down how that got in the system, and why the system started using it.

To remove invalid tags, you have to either vote them down (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/images/cdm_vote.gif), or initate a voting sequence by clicking the little trash can next to them (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/images/trash.gif).

Old Who-Am-I pictures .. whoops. Should be fixed now.

Bugs: using this thread works, for now.

More Tag FAQ:

Dispite their length, we are going to tag regionals with at least 4 tags. This will help group/browse by a specific regional, a specific year of that regional, and all regionals.

-- 'Regional Name'
-- 'Regional Name Year'
-- 'regional'
-- 'year'

For example:

"Great Lakes Regional" regional 2005 "Great Lakes Regional 2005"
Team numbers must be preceeded by 'frc' 'fll' 'fvc' .. ie: frc47 frc111 frc234 frc45

Speaking of code.. and not with CD-Media per-say, but in general on the site: Why is it that sometimes I see &quoteTEXT HERE &quote in some places rather than, I guess it's suppose to be "TEXT HERE" in actual quotes. Can some pages not read the " symbol?

I have seen it get generally better over time, but some places still exhibit this bad code reading ability.

Also, why is my WAI pic changed? Did the switchover change a lot of people's WAI pic by default for some reason??

Anyways, great job with CD-Media. Keep up the good work!!

The " is probably because of some transition between the older gallery -> old gallery -> CD-Media, and all of the changes/bug fixes/etc thoughout then.

I'll try to fix them one of these days.

WAI switched to your newest uploaded pic in the WAI old gallery -- you can always change it back.

could this be from a copy/paste situation where it didn't take the " just the code version? possibly an easy find &quot in the code and change to " ? although 1GB of code is lots to search through, nevermind...

the way comments show up below pictures is really cool and nice, no need to click "continue discussion"

Weird anomaly. Using using FIRE FOX 1.5.0.1 winxp-pro

Some text when viewing all pictures, gets mixed up with the uploaded by possibly too much text or too large of text? Sorry, I don't know how to have a small picture/thumbnail instead of this large one

A note to uploaders, make sure you title your pictures. Otherwise the title just shows up as the file name.

(Brandon, force a title the image to submit for upload?)

A few more things ..

Discussion threads all go into the "Extra Discussion" forum, for now. If you want them moved, I've given everybody the ability to move threads out of that forum -- once out, you must have privileges in the destination forum to move it again. You can move by clicking 'Thread Tools' in the upper right, and then 'Move Thread' should be there. I've disabled deleting of posts & threads in that forum, since if a discussion thread is deleted .. CD-Media will freak out. CD-Media is aware of the thread and will prevent errors, but the thread is not aware of CD-Media and will leave things in an invalid state (for now).

Please remember to use double quotes when tagging names and other 2-3 word phrases.

Don't tag names of people that worked on the robot, or took the picture of the robot -- only include add their name if they are in the photo or discussed in the White Paper (Chairman's Award Essays, etc).

Please add a good title to your images -- it defaults to the file name, but you are encouraged to change it on the next screen, as well as add a description.

Nah, it's just like getting a new car...Say you've driven an automatic all of your life, and you feel rebelious and proceed to get a 5 speed manual. It takes some time to get used to. Undoubtly in like a month, I'll probably change my mind and actually use it and appreciate it; as for now, being a virgin to it, I'm still a little afraid to get my feet wet. My dislike is the same as if you've driven a standard for years, and on a buisness trip you have to rent a crappy rental car. Say, a Plymouth Horizon...which happens to be an automatic. You'll be cursing at it, trying to find the imaginary clutch, and fiddling around with the knobs. Thats me right now, I usually don't adapt well to change, so throwing this all at once (granted it's not done) is just a little hard to take in.
I have a completely irrelevant suggestion Brandon, the image attachment thing...improve it please? Sometimes I'll upload an attachment...and it will never show. So I upload it again, and behold...Doesn't work!

Sorry, Just want to clear it up.

A few more changes/enhancements made last night:

1) You can delete your own tag additions if there has been no voting. I've made mistakes adding tags and I hate that I have to wait for someone to vote it down. So now, if you add a tag 'frc47' and you meant 'frc74' you can delete it (before someone votes yes/no).

2) I added Who-Am-I and avatars to the user info under the title. This serves two purposes: recognition based on avatar/whoami, as well as giving more room for longer titles. Let me know if this screwed up any spacing or anything in your browser.

3) You can move your own discussion threads out of the 'Extra Discussion' forum, into a more relevant/prominent place in the forums. If it's a picture of your bot, move it to the Robot Showcase subforum. If it's a paper dealing with motors, move it to the Motors subforum. The picture gallery moderators will be helping keep this organized, too.

That's all for now -- thanks!

One of the great things about CD-Media (from a development standpoint) is how easy it is to make a list.

At lunch today, I came up with six quick lists that will help you tag items with no tags & vote on pending tags. All of these pages, and more, that provide miscellaneous functionality will be listed on a page linked in the upper right, under everything, labeled misc (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/misc). Once that page starts to get more content, it will probably look a little better than it does now.

So if you're bored, and want to tag some items, or vote on some tags, that's the place to start.

Question:

can you add in under help the standard format for a scrimmage?

Billfred
12-03-2006, 21:02
Alright, a request for everyone who's tagging.

You know that little box that appears next to the field to add new tags? READ IT. I've had to vote against about 1,293 different tags that, while the information was right, was formatted entirely incorrectly.

Remember: FRC1293 (not 1293), "Great Lakes Regional" (not Great Lakes Regional--the quotes count--or GLR), and add in all the proper fields for a regional (for example, "2006" "Florida Regional" "Florida Regional 2006" and "Regional").

Thanks to everyone who is tagging the right way, though!

<edit>By the way, I tried to tag http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/23584 with fvc80, but it instead gave me a comma as the tag. Is this a bug or feature or somewhere in between?</edit>

Clark Gilbert

I'm also getting the "comma" bug. It some of the pictures have a ton of commas on them.

nehalita
12-03-2006, 22:08
I got that a lot of commas too... it seems that phrases that aren't pre-approved (or something) aren't accepted. For example, when I try to tag photos, the only name accepted is the person in the photo (or something like that).

I noticed a lot of pictures are getting just the name of the image file as the title. When picture discussion threads come around, they get the same thing making for inefficient browsing. Do we need to force the uploader to enter a custom title?

Greg Ross
13-03-2006, 01:28
Do we need to force the uploader to enter a custom title?
I was thinking the same thing. I vote that the uploader be required to enter a title.

Brandon Martus
13-03-2006, 08:42
'Require a title' will need some re-work of the photo upload, since it's on a separate step. I will probably end up moving it all to one step, but for now ..

The 'comma' tag is a bug -- we saw it previously with the '-' bug. I increased some debugging in my log files to catch it -- I'll have to investigate later today.

I'll be adding a 'Tagging Standards / Style Guide' to the FAQ, eventually, which will outline the proper way(s) to tag items. Hopefully I'll have that started in the next day or two.

For what it's worth, the comma bug seems to show up on less-commonly-tagged items. FRC1712 tags fine, as does Robot, but I can't get anything FVC to work (FVC111, FVC96, FVC123, etc.), and those wouldn't have been tagged that way before. (I uploaded the only FVC Orangeburg images that I know of, and none were tagged with anything other than the ones from when they were imported from the old gallery.)

I guess one of the problems I am noticing with the new CD Media system is that a LOT more photos are being uploaded. This means that they get knocked off of the front page really quickly and I don't get to see them all.

There's not really much you can do about it, but I wish there was an easier way to browse all the new photos since the last time I logged in.

2 things.

For some reason I was trying to add a tag just now and the system would "add" it and the tag would never show up. It seemed to eat up my suggestion. Don't know if this is temporary or not. (i used quotes)

I just found a few pictures where someone forgot to use quotes and there are about 20 words used. Can you put a limit on the number of tags or have some alert to moderate it? Just voting no to every single word seems like it can be avoided otherwise.

Otherwise I love it. I think i spend too much time on it.

For now, vote against all of them -- the bad ones will go away soon.

I'm going to be adding a little helper that pops under the tag box, suggesting tags for you as you type (similar to Google Suggest, but not as cool). I'm hoping this will help out those who may not know the normal/usual/proper tags to use on some of these photos.

If it doesn't add .. it may think it's already there. Send me PMs with links to the photo/paper you've had issues with and I'll scan the error logs for what happened. Without a link, though, I can't find it (it's huge!).

Please keep the user in mind when tagging. For instance, I was tagging the state maps I made a while back, and realized that not only should they be tagged by full state name, but also by state abbreviation, since both are possible to be searched upon.

(Unless we make a rule about it. As far as I know, there is none.)

Additional note: Maine's state abbreviation, ME, gets entered as "me", which some have already started using as a tag.

Brandon Martus
14-03-2006, 09:44
Yes, 'ME' should be for maine, and "Who Am I?" should be used for 'me'. I"ll update the case of "ME" to reflect that.

I think adding both 'Maine' and 'ME' is a good idea. We already add three or four tags for regionals -- the more we have, the better it is (within reason, of course).

I need some input on some ideas I had, please

Should we allow people to retract and/or change their votes on tags? Sometimes, after thinking about it (or after making a mistake) I've wanted to change my vote. Should this be allowed, if so, when? ..is your vote final, and let others form a majority and pass/fail the tag addition?

Should I add in notification (via email) on any of the following:
-Your image gets a new tag.
-Your tag gets voted on.
-Your tag makes it through the voting cycle.
-Your tag doesn't make it through the voting cycle.
-Your tag gets put back through a voting cycle (essentially a delete).
-A tag you voted on gets voted on.
-A tag you voted 'yes' on gets a majority 'no'.
-A tag you voted 'no' on gets a majority 'yes'.

I agree with this. Once you vote, it should be final.

Maybe you can make those stats about your tags/images available within the User CP. Having them sent via email is ok, as long as I can turn the option off.

Every tag in the tag box (to the right of the image/paper) is a link, which takes you to more photos (or papers) with that tag.

Some of you may know, others may not realize that the star (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/images/star.gif) to the left of the tag takes you to all media with that tag.

Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/) uses a little globe for something similar to this (public vs private tags). I didn't want to rip them off (completely ;)), so I went with a star, but I'm not really liking it.

If you have any ideas for an icon that could show up there, please send me a PM with them -- either a word explanation, or an icon if you're feeling creative (10x10 transparent gif or png).

Thanks. :)

Should we allow people to retract and/or change their votes on tags? I know i've wanted to change my vote but it seems too much of a hassle. The mere option that we can challenge tags even after they are approved should be sufficient

Should I add in notification (via email) on any of the following:
-Your image gets a new tag
-Your tag gets voted on.
-Your tag makes it through the voting cycle.
-Your tag doesn't make it through the voting cycle.
-Your tag gets put back through a voting cycle (essentially a delete).
-A tag you voted on gets voted on.
-A tag you voted 'yes' on gets a majority 'no'.
-A tag you voted 'no' on gets a majority 'yes'.
Actually, if you can make a little stats page where we can enter if we want to, that would be cool. It could be on our cp (just like reps where we can view them at our leisure). It could also be a separate page in cd-media. So, we can view it. I don't think all categories are necessary though (for ex: -A tag you voted on gets voted on. ... there's just too many)

This way it's not in our way but we can still view it at our leisure. You can even make it so we can decide what we want to show up on our "cd-media tag stats" page.

FAQ ;) (add "who am i" tag, then the little name tag icon will show up to make it your WAI)Do we have to upload the picture ourselves, or can we use a picture someone else uploaded as our WAI? I was thinking of changing my WAI to this (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/23588), but when I tried adding a "Who am I" tag, it does not work. (The WAI icon will not appear.) I really don't want to re-upload the same image if it is unnecessary.

I noticed a bit of a bug. I went to http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/23665, but 23664 is another picture of me. The latter doesn't show. But when I click the one before (the one of Ashley Weed) and then click next, I get 23664 (the one with me giving the cheesy thumbs-up)
This 'next/previous' bug should be fixed now. Please let me know if you see anything weird happening.

I agree to using the smaller (frc47, frc1, frc33, etc) -- although technically we could (once the tag editor is up) alias them all so that frc0047 = frc47 and could be used interchangeably.

When I do a search, or click on a tag, I get a bunch of thumbnails. That's good. I find it a little disconcerting though, that I can't click on one of the thumbnails, and then just "prev" and "next" to navigate the pictures. What are the chances that you could implement such a feature?

Add them as the simple ones. Don't reject the complex ones, though, I can always change them (either by alias or by renaming them altogether). Just make sure one is there .. preferably the simple (frc7, frc47, etc)

does adding an additional param to the SQL query solve this?

Like: SORT BY uploaddate DESC id DESC, or something like that?

I don't know what's going on under the hood, but I remember having a problem like this one, and I solved it by adding the id, and mirroring the sort direction from the date.

Just an idea...

How about a "Tags:*** " counter for users, displayed underneath the counter for how many posts a user has made? There's space.

It could kind of serve as another indicator of how involved people are in the community, it could also be a nice incentive to for people to help out.

What do you think?

(I hope none of this is already covered in the FAQ. )

This may be a feature or a bug. I'll let you make the call: When you click on "tags" under "everything", the list of "All Tags" is in alphabetical order. But if you click on "tags" under "photos" or "papers", the "All Tags" list is out of order. (Maybe it's in order by popularity or by date added.)

A question about tag popularity: Is it figured according to how many items receive a tag, or by how many clicks the tag receives?

A couple more questions about deleting tags:
When I vote to delete a tag, am I voting to delete the tag from the system, or just from the picture/paper.
(Is this the difference between a vote to delete via the "Vote on tag changes" button, and a request to delete a tag via the "delete tag" trash can icon?)
Why does the trash can icon show up on some tags and not others?

But if you click on "tags" under "photos" or "papers", the "All Tags" list is out of order. (Maybe it's in order by popularity or by date added.)I still have to rewrite the tag clouds .. so I haven't been paying enough attention to them. The most popular ones (tag is used the most) are listed first, but that will probably change to be alphabetical system-wide.

A question about tag popularity: Is it figured according to how many items receive a tag, or by how many clicks the tag receives? How many items are tagged with that particular tag.

When I vote to delete a tag, am I voting to delete the tag from the system, or just from the picture/paper.From just that item.

(Is this the difference between a vote to delete via the "Vote on tag changes" button, and a request to delete a tag via the "delete tag" trash can icon?)When voting via the trash can, you are essentially removing it from the item, and then adding it again with 1 'delete' vote. If it truly should be deleted, two more deletes will get rid of it for good (from that item). When you vote to remove via the 'add/remove/abstain' page, it is already in voting process and you are just voicing yes/no ..

Why does the trash can icon show up on some tags and not others? It won't show up if it is currently being voted on. It won't show up for 'Who Am I' that is not your own, just yet (whoami weirdness prevents it from happening).

When you tag something, it should show up in the list of tags.
Click on a specific tag, and it'll come up with a search string results of everything that has that.

Or, just search images and use keyword: TAG where TAG = what you want to search for.

I think that's the best way to find something especially from one specific regional for example. Not everything is tagged fully, and probably never will be, but since there is no browsable "tree" view like their was before, this is the best way to look for all similar pics.

By tree I meant the ability to browse through the sections of where pictures were located such as: 2006>Regionals>Peachtree for example.

ex:
FLLreferees, etc.
those seem fine.

I'm not so sure about the different tournaments though. I guess we would use whatever is on usfirst.
ex: Florida State Qualifier
but have FLL in front:
FLL Florida State Qualifier

also for vex, some tags are after the city, some are after the regional they were in. any ideas for uniformity?

another question: for labeling items, should we keep it singular or keep it plural (or keep both)? That way, when people search... they will know which one to use (if we have a little 'common tags' page or something)

I'd say keep them just 'referees' .. there's no need to separate them, really.

I'm not so sure about the different tournaments though. I guess we would use whatever is on usfirst.
ex: Florida State Qualifier

FLL Florida State QualifierI'd go with whatever's on FIRSTs website. Add a 200x after them for the year.

also for vex, some tags are after the city, some are after the regiona they were in. any ideas for uniformity? How about for the official ones, we do "Vex [city]" .. like "Vex Hartford" and "Vex Hartford 2006". For the unofficial ones, let's go off the 'Events' column on the FIRST Vex events webpage.

another question: for labeling items, should we keep it singular or keep it plural (or keep both)? That way, when people search... they will know which one to use (if we have a little 'common tags' page or something)Singular is probably good, just to be consistent -- one is best, otherwise we'll get too many tags. If they search for plurual, it may still come up in the results .. we'll have to test that out.

Wouldn't a tag more like "FVC Orangeburg" keep the competition names in line with FLL? (I suppose one could argue that FRC should be appended to those competitions, but I guess it's assumed since CD is pretty FRC-heavy.)

sounds like a good idea.

maybe, since it's hard to remember every tournament name, we can put in a tag like "FLL Florida" or "FLL New York" to atleast make the FLL tournaments searchable by state. What do you think?

Another suggestion, when we make delete requests, can we be able to write a reason why (just like when you vote add/reject)? Some people are requesting the deletion of a tag and maybe they have a reason that we wouldn't otherwise understand.

Ok, now you can regenerate your own thumbnail.

The interface is functional, but kinda ugly. I'll be fixing how it looks, eventually.

Just click the edit icon ( http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/images/cdm_edit.png ) and you will be able to do all sorts of things (eventually). For now, all you can do is regenerate your thumbnail.

Why would you want to do that? Right now, the system automatically chooses a square in the middle of the image. For portraits, mainly, this causes a problem when it chops off your head. Now you can fix it.

Let me know if there's any issues with it, if you use it.

Thanks,
Brandon

I tried to regenerate the thumbnail for one of my older WAI pictures (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/19680). I tried refreshing, but I'm still getting the Marie Antoinette treatment in the thumbnail.

Is there anyway (or going to be) to change your vote on a tag? Sometimes when I go threw and I'm voting, I mis click or mis-read the tag and give it a wrong vote, only to realize it later. It would be nice to have a way to change it since mistakes do happen.

Any way to retract a delete vote?
I accidentally put delete on a picture tag in which I thought that a better tag existed for. I guess not. :(

edit: LOL Looks like Michelle wants the same feature. (That's what I get for not reading the previous posts.) OK, so far 2 votes for this.

Hrm.. if its meant to be, your wrong vote shouldn't be in the majority in the end. ;)

I'll have to see how easy this would be, and if it will mess anything up.

I have a question (or maybe I'm just inviting discussion) about tagging format. Lately I have been feeling indecisive about whether or not tags for team names should be added/voted for or deleted. For a while, I thought that team names were unnecessary to tag because we already had the frcXXXX format in place (and I voted to delete team names). However, now that I think about it, I think team name tags are also acceptable, for searching purposes (someone might search "Wildstang" instead of frc111 and not come up with as many pictures).

Can we taggers come to a consensus on this? I think we should vote 'in' team names instead of voting against them.

Also, I have noticed alot of new users neglecting to use proper format, or who are unaware of how to set a picture as a WAI, and/or who probably have not read the CD Media FAQ (http://chiefdelphi.com/forums/faq.php?faq=cdm_faq). Would it be too much to ask for an announcement on the portal reminding people about format and directing them to the FAQ?

Thanks,
Jaine :)
