I wasn't to sure if this should be in the "General Forum" thread or the "Chit-Chat" thread so move it if needed.
This being my first year attending a regional, I was quite amazed at what some of the teams were giving away. From talking to my team mates I knew there was going to be a ton of them. But I never expected such "grand" things.
So here is what I pose to you, the FIRST community (wow that sounds too formal). What was your top 5 favorite give-a-ways from a team at your regional from this year? (please include what regional you attended)
There's been so many cool things I got this year, I wouldn't be able to choose just one. So my top 5 give-a-ways are:
Florida Regional
1. 1341's coconuts
2. 1543's hats/beads
3. 79's little duckies
4. 1319's "smarter than monkeys" buttons
5. 21's power ranger buttons.

From Hartford were
Miniature tools
tiny screwdriver/measuring tapes
BUTTONS
Beads
Tattoos (well that was us but it was stilll awesome)
shamuwong
13-03-2006, 22:40
830 Carabiner
1023 Carabiner
Wildstang Bandana
Leopard cat ear thingies from some team at GLR...sorry, I forgot the team name
Everyone gives out buttons. I like things that most teams don't give out and serve a practical use, such as a carabiner...or cat ears...
Unfortunately, plastic bananas were not exactly a high-demand item, so production has been ceased. As it stands, there will be no more 469 bananas until we can secure another supplier.

Everyone was so nice about it, I had a fun time trading and collecting this crazy stuff!
Anyone going to Palmetto, we'll see you there with buttons and fun! :D

If you are traveling to Philly, Chesapeake, or Atlanta our team will have the ultimate FIRST give away. Team in a Box!!
"Team in a Box" is a DVD/CD set designed with the Rookie in mind but also has many other uses. There are sections on the meaning of FIRST, interviews with Dean Kamen, FIRST Senior mentors, Regional Directors and students. Many teams have used it for promo purposes and sponsorship meetings as well. We just added expert advice from Chairman's Team 67 (power trains) and Chairman's Team 103 (animation) as well.
If we run out of copies at competition, you can also order from our site at www.team341.com . we even pay the shipping! Hey when its free you can't lose!!
Of course we will also have buttons, keychains and lots of small daisies too.
Good luck in the weeks ahead!!

If that's true then we have been breaking the rules for years because we always do a raffle for an Atari 2600 and have never been confronted by anyone about it.
We sell the tickets outside the arena so I think its OK.

Our teams giving out coloring books (Wo-Bot Aims High!) and crayons. Quite amusing. I really did like a lot of the frisbees given out at the Buckeye this year... what can I say? I'm a sucker for frisbees!

If that's true then we have been breaking the rules for years because we always do a raffle for an Atari 2600 and have never been confronted by anyone about it.
We sell the tickets outside the arena so I think its OK.It is specifically prohibited in "7.12 SITE RESTRICTIONS" of the rules this year - I don't know if that has been the case in the past. It applies to the site - not just the arena.
Our team was considering a raffle, and cancelled it because of this rule. Other teams should also comply.

Outside the Arena Is legal as long as their are no city ordinances (in the city of the regional) to prohibit so.Again, please see section 7.12 SITE RESTRICTIONS. That's the same section that says you cannot bring in your own food. You can't play loud music or use loud noisemakers. Don't save seats.
Do some of those things happen? Certainly. But that doesn't make it right.

@ UCF, aside from our "hot chicks giving tattoos", we did give out CD's containing video of Friday's matches. EVERY team registered and EVERY team got at least one CD. The tattoos.. well, I'm not so sure.
Guys will always be guys.
Just go to www.team341.com , click on the Team in a Box Banner and fill out the online form. Thanks!

At the FLR there was at least one team with a high end digital camera taking photos thrusday and friday, and they had a laptop burning the photos onto a CD, which they handed out saturday.
Being able to pull photos down from a website is okay, but to get a lot of high resolution (5Mpixel or more) jpegs a CD is still the best way to go.
Photography and videos is something that many teams take for granted at a regional, until you are the person holding the camera. If you take photos all day long you really dont get to watch the matches, because you cant see everthing that is going on - its like you are there but you watched the event through a camera viewfinder.
Also the lighting at regionals makes it difficult to get good photos unless you have a fairly expensive camera and lens - so if you have one, and a laptop that can burn CDs, all you need is a stack of blank CDs and you got something every team will want.

We love the shop rags. Our robot had one on its front at the GLR competition. Judges asked us why we had it and our students mentioned our mentor team 85 and Steve Yasick. They are a really usable product. We love them. Thanks team 85.
One question we have is:
What products are not too expensive to hand out?
Our team is very limited in money. :( We do produce buttons and baseball cards. People seemed to like our baseball cards. They were easy to make and not too expensive.

5. 21's power ranger buttons.
Most of our buttons we printed ourselves (I don't think our mentors liked them, but I really don't know), so we ran out of the really fun buttons, like the Power Rangers and Chuck Norris. But for SC we are printing a whole bunch.
I think the funnest things I've seen were actually when my sister was on the team (back in '01 and '02 when I was too young). I really liked the Thunder Chickens key chains (I don't know if they still give them out). Also, I think they were called Dragon Slayers, gave out the swords that pulled out.

Florida Regional
1. 1341's coconutsI found it strange how we weren't allowed to clap the coconuts together in the stands, while one team was using a drum during the competition, in the pits and in the stands.
I found it strange how we weren't allowed to clap the coconuts together in the stands, while one team was using a drum during the competition, in the pits and in the stands.
I was a little upset about that, because we weren't allowed to bring in instruments, and the team had drums. But I can't really complain because we were clapping the coconuts together the entire time.

Maybe it's because they didn't want people bringing horses into the Regionals.
My favorite Give-a-way from the Buckeye Regional was Team 70 and Team 494's Alien plushies.

At the Great Lakes Regional, there was a lot of cool swag.
One team gave away Gracious Professionalism braclets, and another mini-sharpies. But my team was giving out fortune cookies with a custom fortune on the inside: our logo and information. Plus we had pads of sticky notes, pens, and buttons.
The CircuitRunners are giving away stress balls, tattoos, beads, and our new addition of buttons.
It was kinda funny. Our mentor bought 2000 glowsticks this year for our B.E.S.T. competition and our FIRST competition all together, but we can't use the glowsticks because they glow bright green. But hey, atleast we have them ready for next year.

They're fine for the competition, we gave out glowsticks at ours again this year, some of them green. You just have to make sure drivers do not wear them when operating behind the glass (I accidently did this one match and they told me to remove it at the end; it completely slipped my mind the green glowstick could do anything since we've had them since 2 years ago at Nats.).

Hmm.... What about Team Photos?
I could just bring a computer, a ton of printer paper, some extra ink, and then go around the pits with my camera asking teams if they'd like a team photo made at some point.
Could be done.... if only I wasn't going to be on the field with my camera instead.
look out for 1552 at denver, we are giving away thundersticks, sry, only one per person, so find some1 else and smack them together. it's a team effort LOL

Last year we gave out glow sticks, but unfortunately, they're not in our budget for this year ;___;
We are trying to come up with something cool, but in the mean time, I pride our team on having 7 different button slogans! Collect all 7! And if you missed last year's, you can still collect some of those 12 slogans! ~_^

Last year we gave out Bosch Key chains and Scout Pro (a scouting program) at VCU and Atlanta. This year we are giving out wrist bands that says CA Robotics Team 612. Our next stop is Atlanta, so if you want one, do stop by our pit area.
Although I've some really cool buttons from last year. Also this year, a team at VCU was taking pictures of the robots and were giving out the buttons with the picture on it. It was kinda cool

Out Team's FIRST logo keychains are gone the second teams hear we have them. They are always enjoyed.
But...THE greatest giveaway has to be team 141 The Wo-Bot Coloring Book complete with Crayons. Have any of you see it? It's awsome!
Wo-Bot goes to plant dune grass.
Team 75 had awesome Johnson & Johnson gift bags
at Nj 102 was handing out mini screwdriver sets that were key chains, too. very cool. i so have 612s bracelet and one team handed out cups, useful and different. And i think my fav by far was the team (sry, the number rubbed off) was the team that handed out bubbles in a bottle shaped like a space man!

Our Team (1726) passed out metal keychains. A friend of the team had a plasma cutter, so he cut out "NERDS 1726" for us out of 1/8" steel. Unfortunately because of how expensive and the amount of work involved, we were only able to give out one to each team. But we had pleanty of teams coming back and asking for more!
As usual 862 will be giving several diffrent button designs, including our PS2 Buttons (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/23536)
As well as our Orange Leis like the one Paul is wearing here (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/24147?)

Team 1538 gave out Holy Cows tshirts, saying The Holy Cows 1583 High Tech High San Diego on back and GOT FIRST? on the front.
Frankly after team 79's Pirate Rubber Ducky I like tshirts. Any team that gives out a tshirt as long as it isn't a ridiculous color or say something really cheesy I will wear it as a normal shirt. (To school) I am wearing the Holy Cows one now. I will wear it during thursday no matter what the shirt is. (I have limits)
The anonobots (1190) passed out yellow wristbands with '1190 Anonobots' in blue, arial black font. I liked team 1777's poof ball earrings and team 1666's ducky. :D
As a mentor, I don't really collect the knick-knacks as much as most do. However, I've got to start taking pictures of some of the places the two pair of fuzzy dice that Team 885 gave me have been (various military cockpits and flight simulators).

The Mini tools were awesome, and the buttons were fun to collect. Someone at Wisconsin was giving out business cards. 93 gave out carabiners. 930 gave out extrusions on a keychain. 1103 gave out collectible coins. One team (I don't know who) gave out smiley face bouncy balls.
Argos 1756 was giving out a blue wristband (livestrong-style) at chicago, which I am still wearing and will continue to wear until it breaks (I have lost two similar bands this way). Wristbands are fun to give out because you can wear them all the time, and promote FIRST all the time.
At the midwest regional, my team was giving out hats, t-shirts, and water bottles(nalgene-style). Though one team kept "helping themselves" to the water bottles and t-shirts, so we couldn't keep them on display, and had to hand them out personally.

We will be attending Championships this year. If anyone is interested in getting a 'Got FIRST?' shirt we should have at least 300 of them with us in Atlanta, we may bring 600, so supplies are limited. We won't be giving them out until Friday though.

MARS is attending Championships for the 1st time. Do most teams pass out their buttons or give-aways from their pit or in the stands? Are certain days better for this? On our shoestring budget we don't have many items.

Pat,
Buttons are your #1 priority. Don't worry about all the other trinkets. Most teams divvy-up their buttons between a bagful in the pit and a bagfull in the stands. A few of your spirit-leaders should also keep some on-hand in their pockets (just watch out for sharp pins!)
Search the Internet for badge-making materials and BORROW a badge machine from a nearby team.
Also, make-up some cute fun trophies to give-out to teams you befriend in the pits. That is worth a LOT in making long-term relationships.....Come to Team 1511 and ask for "Lorien" and she may give you one of our cut-up TETRA trophies from last year!
From the sounds of things, you went to the Milwaukee regional. So did we! I liked the mini tools and Frostbytes coins too, but I thought the coolest thing was what we were handing out. Little limit switches on a chain with a thin piece of metal with an Mh for Metalheads laserd on it! (did you get one? I thought I got the whole pit!)

This is probably a little random but I would LOVE to see a team give out little nalgene bottles with their team name on it.

Team 1538 gave out Holy Cows tshirts, saying The Holy Cows 1583 High Tech High San Diego on back and GOT FIRST? on the front.
hahaha
yeah for the holy cows. In nats. they were going to give away cow-print hand made ipod cases to their alliances in finals if they went. But since they didnt, they handed some out andi got one :]
(were from san diego too, TEAM SAN DIEGO!!)
anyway, the devil duckies handed out just that: all sorts of devil duckie paraphenlia.
we had special beads with lil ducks on them
Also we hand made all our buttons (talk about making the underclassmen minions do some work!!) with fun phrases like "do the robot" "dean/woodie/dave is my hero" "Adopt me!" and "do you know where your duckie is?" Among others.
We also had our adoption agency open again. We adopted out multicolored lil devil duckies to people who filled out an application (which were hillarious most of the time. we are STILL trying o get through them all). We ended up "selling out" of the ducks (we ran out) because they were so popular.
:]
love that stuff!!
