Hey Guys,
I was curious, I am the PR rep for my team, whats the craziest sponsor you have?

this may be a dumb question, but crazy in what context?

Well, one of ours is Carolina Culinary Foods. They prepare chicken and beef and other such items for restaurants. A little odd at first glance, but all that machinery requires an engineer or two on the payroll. ;)

(Getting a smidge crazier might require a trip to the past: Hooters donated a wings party for 10 to our auction our rookie year.)

I mean like non technological companies

Best I can think of for us is Sweetheart Cups, who gives us silverware and plates for our dinners.

I forget whether we (MOE) still have them as a sponsor this year, but for a while, we had a funeral home partially sponsoring us. :yikes:

And I think that's pretty crazy.

We're going for supercrazy next year. We're gonna try and get this company "Fuchs Lubericant" To sponser us, for the sole purpose of saying Fuchs.

I don't know if they are sponsoring us this year, but last year we had a company named PHE. They are an adult toy company.

We get to combine both of these - Chipotle's and Adams-Green Funeral Home are both co-sponsors of Team 116 this year (along with NASA, SAIC, Dominos Pizza, and - gulp, I have to admit it - Dunkin' Donuts).

we've got a law office sponsoring us. It's not WAY out there, but it's our "crazy" sponsor

We have a local funeral home as well as a dentist and a doctor.

We've had some odd sponsors-

Merrilee the Clown - oddly a past team parent (whole family of clowns!)- no jokes please!

and

Royal Hawaiian Creations (www.gorhc.com) - our perennial source of aloha shirts. They have never met us but apparently they hang pictures of our team in their office every year. They even watch the competition on the internet to see how we do!

We don't have any unbelievable crazy sponsors, so I'll turn your attention to the CCNY/HSMSE FRC Team #1520, who nabbed Red Bull as a sponsor, so every day they worked on the bot, a red bull car would deliver a case :yikes:

We don't have any particularly unusual ones, but 1823 from Portland has Voodoo Doughnut - famous (infamous?) for its Pepto-Bismol donuts and odd operating hours (10pm-10am).
They also perform marriages and give Swahili lessons.

A local carpeting store is our craziest...

As some may know, team 306 has a long list of small sponsors. The craziest of them include sewing shops, a potato chip company, a hair salon, our local hospital, an optometrists office, and a pizza shop. Our total sponsor list contains arround fifty to sixty small businesses from our town. The strangest to me is the hair salon, but the others are weidr too.

Cody Carey

Really, the hair salon is the strangest?

I thought for sure that it would be the fish hatchery :)

Hmm, I have a feeling you are mispronouncing Fuchs then, Hexagram.

We have a few local doctors, dentists, and lawyers as sponsors - and yes, we have a funeral home as well :). Some other notables are a local Prescription Center, Golden Guernsey Dairy, and our local resort - Olympia Resort and Conference Center.

For us, even though it's not really weird, I'm pretty sure we have Tim Hortons giving us some money... Well not really money, but more like free donuts and coffee... :D So, during the build season, we would have 2 dozen donuts there almost every day for free... hehehe...

Bemis
19-03-2006, 17:53
oops, I was reading the list and didn't even see the fish hatchery. That list is so darn long.

We've had fairly normal sponsors.... but in awesomeness factor, we have one that sweeps the boards. Intuitive Surgical, the guys who make the DaVinci Surgical Robot, were one of our valued sponsors this year.

Koko Ed
19-03-2006, 18:55
We have only one sponsor :Xerox.
And the craziest thing I can think of that they done is to stick with the program for all of our 15 years when it would have been really easy to drop everything when times were tough.

Don't discount that they sponsor us too! It's such a great feeling knowing that the industry is impressed with what you're doing. btw, you (114) had an awsome robot. Good luck at SAC

If you are speaking about the fish hatchery... I don't know if they bothered making a logo :)

they're not really weird or crazy but sara lee has sponsored 1038 in the past...and puffs tissues sponsored us this year...not really sure how they relate to robotics

We have Dr. Greg Olsen, a local resident as well as the 3rd ever Private Astronaut. He went to the International Space Station and while he was in space he sent us an email saying that he'd like to sponsor us. Pretty cool, but we had to wait for the check until he came back to earth.

It's pretty cool, but the Clown is kinda tough to beat, I'm guessing he gives free training to 25 (not like they need it).

[Off Season Plug]By the way, if you come to Monty Madness (http://www.montymadness.org/), you'll get to see Greg Olsen as our keynote speaker. [/Off season Plug] [related note] the $100 enterence fee deal ends March 31 so sign up quick! [/lots of off topicness]

For those of you that are saying you are not sure how robots have anything to do with a product, try thinking about how the products are packaged and/or manufactured. In the above, I'm pretty sure that they don't have a person with scissors cutting each tissue. A robot/machine is responsible for it.

Many food products are the same way. There was a tv show on the Food Network (name escapes me) that would show some of the equipment that was used to make candies or package the food items. How much better can you get than combining food with machines?

As for my teams, I think the craziest sponsor is actually the non-sponsor. Too bad many companies/businesses still don't see all the benefits of this program.

The show's name is Unwrapped. They show how many popular food items are made and packaged. They also usually show a little bit about the history of the item.

Missouri Doodles breeds superior miniature Labradoodles and Goldendoodles

our craziest sponser.. was last year. This company Precision Edge, gave us 1000+ of these little Medallion (http://www.cricketsnorth.com/robotics/albums/buttons/Medalion.thumb.jpg)

all for free with their robotic lazer cutters (go Fanuc robotics!)... .they are a company which primarily makes surgical tools... so that in itself was pretty crazy ide think.

One of our sponsors is the division of Philips Medical that makes Sonicare toothbrushes. This isn't that strange, though, since every robot needs clean (gear) teeth.
