I still think we need more teams!!

This is an awesome event that probably rivaled some regionals last year....and adding an extra day this year should make it sweet!....

So i would suggest signing up for Indiana robot summer time fun!!

(heck you'll even get to play with a California robot!)

We have progressed past the "thinking" state to the "waiting" state. We still need permission from the school and a teacher to be a chaperone.

We still have openings for the IRI!! We have 8 free right now, but a couple more may open up later. The list above is the most current list. If you look at the list of the teams, there are some VERY impressive teams coming. This list even rivals some of the regionals for this season. This is going to be an exciting event. For registration, go to http://www.cyberblue234.com and click on IRI Registration.

Just a question to all IRI teams,

Where are you planning on staying?

It looks like we are gonna hit a Super 8 for the Friday nite, just wondering...:D

Here are the packages at hotels in the area. I'm posting on it here but i'll be emailing it to all teams tomorrow

David Kelly

The newest registration for the IRI is the one, the only CHIEF DELPHI!!!:D You heard that right, Chief Delphi has registered. For all you teams that have been holding out, nows your chance to sign up and compete against the best teams from all across the country, not just the mid-west.

for registration, go to http://www.cyberblue234.com

Team 469 has a student who is attending Purdue this summer and in the fall. He wants to join our team at IRI but could really use a ride home fromt eh competition and possibly to the competition as well.

Is there anyone from that area who would be willing to drive him?
You can respond to me directly at gsalp@aol.com.

Our team would be eternally grateful!

Thanks. Gail

Clark Gilbert
12-06-2002, 00:17
Maybe if David Kelly reads this he can email the question to the person from 461 (Purdue team), and the former 469 student can tag along with them....

Jeff Rodriguez
12-06-2002, 12:41
our team has talked about it a little. WE have students willing to go, but we need transportation and a chaparone. Don't count us in just yet though

Hey I was leaked a rumor that Dr Joe was going to be the guest MC at IRI?!! Is this true?!

David Kelly
12-06-2002, 16:39
i've heard that too! :D anyone want to confirm? Dr. Joe?

or maybe you'll have to just wait and see.

Clark Gilbert
12-06-2002, 19:46
I think i also heard the same today from a very reliable source (although he could have been lying to me)...

I thought it was sweet just having 47 come (long live the ball bots!), but now if Joe Johnson is the MC it will be really awesome...

Jeff Waegelin
12-06-2002, 20:42
How reliable does that make your source, then? ;)

Anyways, Dr. Joe as a guest M.C. would be really cool (hint hint :D).

Mike Soukup
12-06-2002, 23:03
It's true, 111 will be there. Andy, you'd better get another pig from the farm, we like our BBQ pork and lots of it.

The list of teams keeps getting better and better, now all we need is team 60 :) It's gonna be a blast.

Don't worry about it - I'm sure we'll be there! There were just some issues about who from our team will be available to go. With 35 people, though, I'm sure we can find 10 to go! See you there! :)

The 3rd annual "Indiana Robotics Invitational" is just around the corner, and the locals here in the Hoosier Heartland are getting pretty antsy.

We've got 25 teams coming in to compete, with room for 7 more. These teams will be competing in one of the best gyms in central Indiana! The pits will be around the field, just like the first two IRIs.

This year's IRI is a two day event... that means teams will get a slew of Q matches to fight it out for their first seed. But, as a first seed... who do you pick? Have you seen the list of teams competing? Hmm... 71, 469, and 308 were three of the four "first picks" at the championships... that would be a tough decision.

Also... we're gonna have a good time. On Friday evening, after we play a few qualification rounds, we get to eat some of that yummy "TechnoPig" while having fun at our own IRI team party.

Speaking of a good time, it will be fun to see friendly faces "working the field" at the IRI. First of all, the one and only Dr. Joe is our our M/C. You may also recognize Crazy Nate Smith behind the scorer's table, so we know that all will go smoothly. Also, we will have an elite panel of judges who will be deciding on 10 awards for the competing teams.

Then there are the referees... and they're tough :). I'm the head ref, and the rest of the crew will be made up of 1 fellow TechnoKat, 2 CyberBlue engineers and one notoriously tough ref from the Beach Bots (thanks, Sean Roberts!). We will call the game just like FIRST refs call it at the Championships, so make sure that you re-read FIRST's Update #8.

So, 25 teams are getting all of this... the competition, the fun, and the excitement. We could use more teams to make this competition even better. If any team is interested in coming, check out the CyberBlue website and sign up... if you dare!

we will be there one way or another. but the reason jnadke posted that we might not is believe it or not there is not enough interest on our team. i know sounds unreal. dont worry though there r a few of us that will find a way to be there no matter what. see u all down there. good luck.

With my spare time(what little bit I have left,) I've been adding new features to the scoring software which will make their debut at this year's IRI. Currently completed or in the works:
-Notification on the match results screen if the high score has been tied or beaten.
-An updated alliance selection display, not only showing the teams selected and still available, but also who they will be competing against in the first round.
-A "ticker-tape" display on the pit monitor, showing various event statistics(high score, rounds remaining, schedule reminders, etc.)
-802.11b access available to custom event information system(instant rankings, match schedules, etc). (SSID if available: iri_net)

I may not know for sure until I set up and test on site at the IRI which of these features we will be using. More information will be coming as the event gets closer.

DISCLAIMER: Some features, including the public 802.11b access, will only be available bandwidth-permitting on our wireless network. Due to the nature of the event, stress testing of the network will not occur until setup on the Friday morning of the event. Therefore, it will not be possible to provide advance notice as to whether or not this feature will be available.

Actually i dont even really have to stay at a hotel but i'm to lazy to drive back and forth to Indy 6 times (i have to help set up on Thurs.)

I also checked out a map of Indy to see exactly where Lawerance North HS was and its pretty close to the Omni and a pretty decent mall.

Great to hear you working on advancing the system! If you have Internet access, would you want to try and feed the SOAP DB some LiVE match data? If not, how about a .tab file after the event? The data in Matches, MatchDetails, and Awards would be all we need.

Also, could this modified version of ScoringFIRST be available for our Mayhem in Miami event? See: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=86517

I'd be glad to push up some data after my computer gets back home, but I don't think I'm going to have access on site(unless this is still a possibility David?). As far as using the new version, as soon as I get it tested out completely, I'll be posting it to the normal postseason SF2k2 download location....

DJ,

You better not step out of the box, throw a ball onto the playing field or touch the controls... I would LOVE to throw the flag on team 45! Also, those metal cleats better be smooth and not tear up our carpet!

With regard to how closely things will be called on the field, I'll probably be tougher on calling penalties on team 45 than anyone else. Sure, my intention and the intentions of the other referees would be to treat all teams the same, but it's only natural to be more critical of your own team when in this situation.

So... be on your best behavior, DJ!

So, how exactly does the alliance pairing work if only 6 teams pick? Do the top two teams get a first-round bye? Or is it done some other way?

Nate Smith
29-06-2002, 15:07
Here's the way it's going to be done:

#1 & #2 seed get a first round bye....

#3 plays #6 (as normal)

#4 plays #5 (as normal)

Basically, there's going to be placeholder teams inserted for the #7 and #8 alliances, and #1 & #2 will be given the wins...

For those of you whose interest was piqued when I mentioned the possibility of an 802.11b WLAN at the IRI which would allow you to get up-to-date information on team standings and match results, a preview is now available. You can go here (http://68.42.129.111:8080/SFWeb/teamlist.cfm) to view the current team list(at least the newest that I have), and then use the links at the top of the page to view the rest of the system. A question to all, was a the Max QP (without a DQ) a team could get this year of 195 ever hit at a regional/championship? If not I think it could be done at IRI with the right combination:

Red-
1 Goal
35 Balls
2 Robots

Blue-
2 Goals
25 Balls
2 Robots

Final Score 65-65 Red would get the win with 195 QP

This would require every ball on the field to be placed into a goal and all robots to get/tether back, could be a challenge but it'd be awesome to watch....

I thought IRI registration was pretty much dead, guess not. Maybe we can get to the number of teams everyone had originally talked about. Hopefully none of this messes up the amount of matches that we are having or the way the finals are going to be played out, oh well i though...the more the better :)

I need people to start coming up with reasond why my parents should let me go to IRI. I'd be coming with RAGE, which is a long drive. Their reasons for not allowing me to go are:

1) I haven't worked enough because of my arm. I was out for awhile while my arm was healing. I'm taking like four days off for a wedding in august.

And thats the only reason i remember cause i was too pissed of at them when they said i couldn't go.

I need some good counterrpoints before i try to change their minds. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Clark Gilbert
05-07-2002, 21:47
The first thing i would try is to make as many bargins as u can. Tell them you will go above the call of duty to do whatever once you get back from IRI, but make sure you keep up your end of the deal. You can try telling them it's a "once" in a lifetime chance, especially this year since you are national champs. You could try telling them by going it could possibly help out in the long term by meeting people in the "industry" (possible jobs?), maybe try to get business cards, etc. to show your parents...

(Are your parents looking?) You could lie and say that if u dont go the whole team suffers...;) (dont know how well that would work, maybe you've already tried it)

Hopefully all goes well so all of us over here can see the true RAGE team. Too bad i dont have the money to next day Fed Ex you a ladder so you can get yourself out of the hole you've seemed to dig...

Since we are just under 2 weeks away from IRI, does anyone wanna through out guesses about maybe who they think will be...

#1 seed?
Finals Alliances?

EDIT: Opps..looks like i forgot to mention that the top 6 seeding teams cannot pick each other in the finals. (I dont know if everyone already knew this).

Ricky Q.
07-07-2002, 13:50
I have my ideas, so I won't post specific things but heres how I see it:

#1 Seed?: This is a hard call you have so many great ball bots in: 173, 45, 111, 234, 47, 269, etc.... I believe it will be one of the stronger ball bots getting the #1 seed and I believe it will come down to the wire on QPs.

Alliances?: Also another hard one, if you can seed highest, then you can pick the best goal grabber, which was the trend in the finals this year, However I'd like to see an all-ball alliance go far in the finals, will it happen? Who knows.....I think an alliance of the high seed ball grabber and 2 goal bots will take the IRI, I'll proabably be wrong though.....

Just my thoughts.....

Oh yes I forgot about the top 6 rule, That will make it very very interesting, making the best go against the best, not with them.....

Allie
07-07-2002, 23:48
at this time i will not even begin to guess who will come out on top. the competition is going to be hard. that is a pretty stacked list of teams that r coming. though i am sure 93 will do well of course. just becuase we r the best. lol just kidding. it will be hard and a good time. should be a better competition then we have seen yet. but we will see what happens.

Since Clark brought up predictions, here are mine (most aren't very daring):

For the #1 seed, take your pick from the long list of hybrid bots (33, 45, 47, 65, 111, 173, or 269). It will come down to strategy, pairings, and a lot of good fortune.

The #1 pick will be:
71, 308, or 469

The winning alliance will a hybrid, and a strong 2 goal grabber, and either a fast 1-2 goal grabber or another hybrid.

The TechnoPig will be repeat hit.

One of the refs will misplace his flags.

Baker will be the toughest head ref ever and will DQ everyone. Ok, maybe that's a stretch, but under his guidance the refs will call 5 penalties and will DQ one alliance, minimum.

The Great Carnak I am not, I'm still waiting for his predictions.

I can see it now... Sean tries to pull out his flag to call a penalty, but to his surprise it is no longer in his pocket. He turns to his left just in time to see the back of Mike's head as he runs off with the rewards of his nice pocket-picking...

I wish I could be there this year :(. I guess there's always next year.

Not necessarily, at Battle Cry two very powerful goal grabbers 237 and 190 picked two really good hybrids (190 & 121) (237 & 173). It seemed that with such as high percentage of ball bots, it gave the powerful 2-goal grabbers a really big boost in QP. I wouldn't be really surprise if 469 or 71 got to pick first.

For the finals, I do agree with you that it will like mostly be an impossible 2 goal or 3 goal grabber (469 & 71) and a hybrid (173,45,47,111) that will win it.

IRI is like the Battlecry of the Mideast, there are going to be the best teams from there, and it will be as fierce as Battlecry.

Here are some more random predictions:

1. A suprise team will get #1 seed.
2. There will be no entanglements, but the carpet will get damaged, resulting in a DQ.
3. A new high average QP score will be achieved.
4. The Lady Truck Town Thunder team will seed higher than the boys Truck Town Thunder team.
5. The refs will have 2 or 3 flags each.
6. Friday's hog roast/party will be a hoot.
7. There will be some major robot damage on the field, due to carefree driving and all out bashing.
8. An all-Indiana alliance will win the competition
9. A good time will be had by all.

Not much, I know. But hey, I'm doing my part to keep this thread going.

And here's something else to look forward to...my current new feature list for the version of ScoreFIRST which will make its debut at IRI:
-Timer display with background logo for those events not using video switching
-Real-time scoring capabilities
-Activation of a "placeholder team" mode which allows, with a little work after alliances are generated(going through and manually "scoring" any matches with the placeholder team), any number of alliances to compete in the finals.
-A slightly changed alliance selection display, showing who plays against who in the first round of play.
-Notification on the match results display if a new high score has been reached.
-Multiple options for field controller use
-Real-time access to a Wireless LAN setup running a live-update information server(SSID: iri_net)
-Miscellaneous other operator-side enhancements(read: things you'll never see)

I'm sure there's something I've missed(I don't have the newest version of the code in front of me right now), so you'll just have to wait until next week to see everything! See you there!

Also, just an FYI...for those of you who were watching my work on the web information system, it has been taken offline until I arrive at IRI. With registration closed, I am starting to generate actual competition matches, and if the web system remained online at this time, it would allow unrestricted access to the match information.

Car Nack Predicts

1. The IRI will again be great fun and a huge success.

2. The final match will be a tremendous pushing contest which will tear the carpet somewhere between the alliances and result in a pile of bunched up carpet under each of the robots. Because the lines of the zones will be moved the winner will have to be determined by the highest pile of carpet under the robot.

A couple of things about the IRI

1. If you can we would appreciate your teams using the concessions in the facility. The proceeds go in full to next years rookie team “Team Lawrence”. So the money you spend there is going to a good cause. The group that is working the concessions will be the team leaders for this new team so encourage them when you get a chance.

2. There will be shirts for sale at $6.00 per shirt. We are working on getting all the teams listed on the back of the shirt so you can brag to the fact that your team competed in one of the strongest pound for pound tournaments around. These are very nice shirts for $6.00

3. Due to some late sponsorships there may be few extra $’s left after the tournament is over so the three host teams have agreed to take the left over and offer a scholarship to a student on a team that attended the IRI this year. This is still in the planning stage and applications hopefully will be available at the competition. No word on the value amount yet.

4. You may want to bring a power strip and a small extension cord. You will have access to one outlet at your pit area.

5. Enjoy your stay here in Indy and I can’t wait till next Friday.

I plan on making 2 flags for each ref... and actually got the material for the flags during lunch today. With Car Nack's prediction in mind, I may have to make some more!

Also, maybe the refs (or a ref) will wear a hat so that when the run out of flags, the hat can be thrown, kinda like in football.

We shouldn't have any rules issues at the IRI. We have a new team member in charge of rules compliance and we're going to bring him along with us to the competition. His name is Ben Franklin, and he's been known to do a VERY good job at helping avoid DQ's.

Chris,

My understanding is that Ben was actually planning to join the judges for the IRI, in order to remain completely impartial. I'm certain that while Andy pays closer attention to Team 45 (only natural), Ben will be looking out for us.

Since it's being held in Indiana, I have no qualms about it being called the IRI. I do, however, appreciate the nice tribute to the wolverine state with the color scheme. :D

Hrm, you guys have to push it dont you? :D

Lets read from the book of Baker, modified for the situation:

"OK, then why don't you wear your "Michigan Robotics Invitational" shirt instead? Oh, yeah... you can't do that, 'cause there ISN'T one!

I think that you're just jealous of the fact that the Hoosier state is much more technologically advanced than the Wolverine's . "

I'm trying to recall some of the chapters, like..

1. How to drive a cheap, crappy car.
2. You too can misplace tools at the TechnoKat shop.
3. Pig wrestling is fun!
4. Hicks are people too.
5. Yes, the Universtiy of Evansville DOES have an engineering school.

Kidding aside...

Speaking of books, I'll have have a 37-page copy of the TechnoKats' latest white paper available for each team who is attending the IRI. It's called...

"6 Motor Drive Assembly w/ Pneumatic Shifting of 4:1 Gearbox"

I just got it done, and it looks nifty.

Now it seems that there will only be 1 "special guest" at IRI....Do to circumstances this guest has to appear somewhere else..although i hear there is a slight chance he may be able to attend.... :(

Hey Students - I think the maximum score is actually 85 to 85.
With "mini-me's", each robot could actually be in both ends of the playing field, scoring 80 robot points, plus 30 goal points, plus 40 ball points.......

It is true that the max qualifying score is 255 (85 * 3), although that would mean utilizing all 60 balls.

You'd also need Two empty halves of coconut that can be banged together, and the secret formula of a Krabby Patty.

Nate-

Not that you haven't done enough, but what about an alliance that ties the high score? What if both alliances have the high score (i.e. Match #1 was a tie 30-30?) Is this only for Qualifying rounds or does the code apply to eliminations as well?

Hope the event goes well.
