At some point in the competition, at least one robot will break. Therefore, FIRST has provided a Spare Parts station near Pit Admin. Some suggestions for using this valuable resource follow. Note: This is from the standpoint of someone who volunteered to maintain the station at LA.
1) There are no fasteners at Spare Parts. Neither is there metal or sensors. (numerous instances at LA)
2) Most items in Spare Parts require exchanges. Be sure to bring the bad part in. Some grace may be given on when you bring the part in. (Spare Parts instructions)
3) Spare Parts does not have anything that is not in the kit. (Practical experience)
4) If you need a control system component replaced, do not send a student. Send an adult with a credit card. (If you don't return the component by the end of the regional, the credit card will be billed for the price of the component.) Some components need IFI approval, but that is easily arranged.(Spare Parts instructions, and Game Manual Section "At The Events")
5) Spare Parts will not give parts as "spare in case it breaks" basis. (Spare Parts instructions)
6) Although Spare Parts is often next to Pit Admin, it is not part of Pit Admin. Should you request something that is in Pit Admin's area, you will find yourself directed towards the Pit Admin sign. (Numerous instances of this.)
7) Spare Parts has no loanable batteries or chargers--of either type--that are available for loan, except to international teams that are not from Canada. (We were asked this several times.)
Spare Parts is there to help, but it only offers a limited amount of spares. Please bring your own spares for any custom parts that are likely to break, and to give to teams that need them more than you do.
