[Official Playlist from DJ!] Music played at regionals.

ok ok ok, its gone on long enuf, thread after thread about music played at regionals, so i took it upon myself to get the official playlist from a DJ (after some sweet talking) because i had a hard time finding songs for my slideshow CD last year.

so here it is, the Official FIRST Playlist, this gets emailed to every DJ at every regional, so it should definately have the song you heard (minus practice matches, which is just CD's field crew had), enjoy.

I guess that wasn't exactly what I expected. I know for a fact that I have heard far more music from the Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, and Metallica. Did the DJ say how strictly they are required to stay on that list?

FIRST has some amazing DJs. :)

I mean -- you've got to be dedicated to your craft if you're going to lug around that 7' edition of Everybody (Backstreet's Back). If that wasn't evidence enough of your dedication, surely there are but a few DJs in the country -- nay, the world -- that have the rare Blondie recording of 99 Luftballons. This edition is rare, for the most part, because the song was released by Nena after Blondie effectively disbanded and they've never covered it.

A good list, for sure, but there are obviously songs added by the DJ's. I didn't hear it at Purdue or Cleveland, but last year in Chicago and several times in Milwaukee I heard "Stomp to my Beat" by JS17 - this is a great song to get the crowd pumping.

The list for music during the awards is standardized as well...I know I've seen it floating around here somewhere.

I'm looking into it. There seems to be a huge gap between DJ's such as the one at VCU which played a bunch of terrible music vs the one at UCF who felt overly restricted by the playlist vs the one at Detroit who kicked butt, but was overly repetitive as well.

I'll let you guys know what I find out.

At Waterloo the DJ played And Then What by Young Jeezy (not on the list) but only the "boom boom clap" and none of the actual rapping. Such a disappointment for such a great song.

the REAL name is "O-Zone - Dragostea Din Tei (3:34)" and i heard it at waterloo but not sure which day it was.... but alas its still not on the list :S

hmm.. i thought they had to be pretty strick with the songs because they needed a liscence to play at a venue like that?? .. remember: day 1 theirs no DJ.. just random CD's

One thing that really suprised me was that Green Day's "Holiday" was on the list (our DJ played "American Idiot") It seems to me that FIRST should stay away from songs as politically charged as those, not to mention they don't really fit in at a robotics competition. They should just sub in DSK's "Robot Case"

Slightly deviating from the purpose of the thread... I highly disagree. Not to mention the "free speech" issues, every song is "charged" with something. Most songs are love songs, some are political. Just because you don't happen to agree doesn't make it "inappropriate." And to present an interesting point: I believe that robotics IS political. Dean's homework is to call up all of your statesmen and get FIRST teams in every political district. If you want to go a step further, Engineering is Liberal. We try to change the world, making it better. Who wants to be a "conservative engineer?" "Oh, the design is fine as it is. It doesn't need any improvement." Next thing you'll say is that they should ban Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" because THAT's a protest song too...

Day one there might not be a DJ because they're paid by the hour, and music on Practice Day has never been considered that important.

Content has nothing to do with the license to DJ. Content is strictly the control of the person who hires the DJ.

But there are easier ways to restrict content than a list of 300 or so songs. Instructing the DJ to follow "FCC guidelines" or explain the meaning of "Gracious Professionalism." would be a better improvement, because the DJ is now free to play whatever he has that may be appropriate, but hasn't been heard of by FIRST yet. The DJ SHOULD know the content of all of the music he owns; it shouldn't be a surprise to him if there's inappropriate content that he obviously shouldn't play.

From what I heard they are to stay as close to that list as possible but allowed some lee way if needed but they must preview the songs into their headphones to insure no profanity is audible. And of course Special Requests are allowed (at least at those regionals where the DJ was in reach of the teams - Majority of which are posted at or by the scoring table) =)

probably where the awards is - I can't give too much information on this only b/c I have been behind the scenes in which most of everything is visible, the awards music from all I can say is random. and is not played by the DJ. So that just leaves the AV Crew / other means -----> Highly Secretive Shhhhhhh =)

well i thought i had last years Awards music list on my school drive from last year but i just looked and nope..

but i did find this on my school drive.. i totally didnt know i had it..modified date: may 15th 2005. it apears to be the complete list of music from 2005? or maybe just a handmade list of songs one person heard? i have no clue but i know it first music.

I'm sure if you were musically intellectual, you could compose the list yourself since they play the same songs for the same awards at every event per year.

You just have to actually know the songs. I know like.. 90-95% of them.

I could come up with this list at The Championship event if I remember.

As a follow up to my earlier post:

I talked with the DJ at Toronto, who's been doing the Canadian Regionals for 5 years. He's pretty much left alone, because he knows what he's doing and is obviously experienced enough to not be force fed a playlist. From what I heard, it is up to the individual regional committees to enforce "The List." Talk to your regional directors for more information.

My new pet project for the summer is to get my DJing whitepaper cleaned up and approved by the men upstairs so it can become a guide for new DJ's instead of "The List," which is IMHO rediculously restrictive.

I like it when you can go from played Mix-A-Lots "Baby Got Back" one minute, to Tim McGraws "I like it, I love it."

I agree, at UCF I counted him playing Queen's We Will Rock You I think 14 times in the same day. Eventually I started getting annoyed and covering my ears. It was so hard to tune it out tho. And I liked Palmetto's DJ too! :D

Where do DJ's get the actual music files without spending a fortune and without illegally downloading them?Your first option was correct, they spend fortunes to buy the CDs of the music. Most will not download music, as the quality of the compressed audio (such as AAC or MP3) on such services as iTunes is no where near the quality of of CDs. On iPods and other similar consumer devices the difference in quality may not be noticible, but at high volumes and on nice audio equipment, the difference between downloaded music and CDs is like night and day.
