View Full Version : Autonomous All-Stars
I saw the other all-star threads and thought this would be a good one to start. Nominate any teams or alliances that had great autonomous modes, or modes that were particularly clever.
The best autonomous modes I've seen were 111 and 1625 at the Wisconsin regional (the only one I've attended). My team (1816) was lucky enough to be on an alliance with those two and it was just amazing to see them both score all ten balls for 70 points in autonomous. Side question: Has anyone else seen this at another regional?

at the Colorado Regionals, I think the best I saw in autonomous was 1158 and 159, there may have been more because I was the driver and me and our team strategist were constantly down in the pits planning for each match and then again I had to help fix up our robot of course.

The triplets are crazy in auton. I saw some very impressive consistency from them. At palmetto, team 11 got 30 auton points very consistently. (I'm still scratching my head why we didn't pick them)
Of course, there's us too. We score 8 out of 10 every match.
Oh wait, that's just what it does in theory. ;)
Man, I wish that theory worked.

team 1726 had a very consitent 9-10 point low goal shooter that was unblockable. i watched their autonomous and i was amazed in their consistency and the speed of the balls as they flew out the front side of the robot. Makes me wonder why we didn't pick them for our alliance (no offense ot 568 or 835, you guys were great teammates).

At Phoenix, team 987 had an awesome autonomous mode, especially teamed up with 1241. Both could make almost all ten every time, and when we played them they clogged the center goal in autonomous!

Pink (233) had a wicked awesome auto. Many teams tried to block them (few succeeded), and they consistently hit 8-10 auto mode.
Of course after watching the palmetto webcast, team 11 had an amazing auto, hitting 10 for 10 in the finals on 3 + occasions

I'd have to say from the regionals I went to because i think it only fair to judge auto-modes based on actually seeing them thier are 2 that top the list.
1126 - these guys are unstopable in automode, 10 for 10 almost everytime.
217 - these guys are also unstopable, 10 for 10 in almost all cases

chuck 84 consitiantly dumped their ten, I think some times the dumpers go under rated but these guys were GOOD!
Not to toot my own horn, but:
Team 375 has consistently shot 7/10 or higher into the upper goal, and when blocked and hit, still managed to get 4+/10 balls into the goal.

703, once they got their speed under control and didn't try to bash through the Lexan. ;)
Only one I remember seeing score in high goals at Peachtree was Team 34.

There are some great auton modes out there, 233 comes to mind right off the bat from Florida, 1523 auton mode worked pretty well as well.
118 had a stinking amazing auton mode in the Lone Star finals. They got it going the way it was supposed to in the finals matches and it didn't matter if you hit them they were gonna make 10/10. The only way to stop it was 418 in the finals match hit them so hard that the robot spun around 180 and the camera couldn't find the center goal in time. Watch out for these guys at nationals what they've been able to do is pretty impressive.
Hey and don't forget those dumper bots hehe Its hard to discount the easiest 10 points in the game. I think it was 364 who had a pretty nifty auton where they drove to the opposite corner goal and dumped their balls there.

Hey team 85,469,1114,27,1503,70,494, and a few others i would have to check but these guys have great autonomous modes.+ the other 2 triplets but 1114 is the better of the three.

Hey and don't forget those dumper bots hehe Its hard to discount the easiest 10 points in the game.1272 and 322 were very good lower goal shooters, or dumpers if you prefer. 1272 were our parterns at Boilermaker and they made all ten just about everytime. 322 was the #1 seed at West Mighigan and could also score all ten.Not to toot my own horn, :D But its so hard not too. Anyhoo, Team 85 finally got our turret and camera to work in autonomous at Boilermaker, and this has helped us score 6-7+ 3pt balls in autonomous, and as I said already 1272 picked us there. At West Michigan we continued this consistency and ended as the #2 seed.
There are so many robots out there that are good shooters in autonomous, that its going to be hard to name them all. Just like the the thread about Pure Shooters -- 2006 Hall of Fame (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=46123). But we FIRST people don't give up too easily. :D
Our team's Auto mode never once failed to do exactly what it was supposed to... we guarded our starting spot vigorously and never failed to be there ten seconds later....grin

176- 10pt dump never failed, 10pts every time
1124- 3pt shots were great an on the money
126- an amazing shooter 2 balls at once, an on a bad match still got 8 or 9 balls in
177- great shooter always did them well
20- 3pts never seemed to fail for them
At the Boilermaker 1024 and 1038 both had very good auto modes. Once 85 got their camera working they also started to dominate the match.

At Lone star 118, 1421, and 1858 had the best autonomous modes. During the finals 118 would get 10/10 in the center goal and the only way to stop them would be to spin them around. 1421 could make all 10 balls into the corner goal from their starting position. This alone would usually let their alliance win the autonomous period and get the 10 bonus points. 1858 could hit the center goal from there starting position and if aimed right they could get 8/10-10/10.
Keep up the good work guys!

(IMHO and with as much nuetrality as possible)
VCU had several good auton modes.
435- until they were countered
1610(My team)- Simple, effective, made 7/8 one round with the 8th not exiting in time
1522- Simple corner scoring

I may be partial, but Team 70, More Martians scored 10 for 10 and 9 for 10 quite a few times at the Wisconsin Regional. In one of the matches when FIRST was having trouble with field resets we had to start over 3 times. In that match we scored 10 for 10 on the first try, 9 for 10 on the second and finally a poor 6 for 10 on the 3rd (???).
Not to shabby for a new team.

Have there been any teams that can dump ten balls into the far corner goal? If so, I would definately say they are an all-star.

I was told 364 did, thats why I said it earlier, Not sure if they actually ever did it or not ( whether they could or if they ever needed it. )

Agreed those 10 point dumps if consistent are amazing, 1902 was #1 in lone star and all we did was dump the 10 balls. I believe the team is 98% or something through out our 2 competitions scoring in the corner goals in auton. I believe the missed 2% was a 9/10 score. I think however if you count the scorers there should be some verity in the auton. Maybe being able to score from the 1 2 and 3 spots a defensive mode and a maybe a far goal maneuver?
To nominate an all star defensive auton I would say 710. They would move out in front of a robot then throw up their shot blockers in autonomous disrupting some of the better autonomous bots at Florida.

135 could make 8-10 balls in auton (unless blocked which they were alot by the end) at BMR. 1018 could make all 10 balls in the corner goal early on at BMR.

We had the code to go dump into the far corner goal, but we never had the need to do it. We could make 8-10 points regularly in the near corner goal and were usually the only team on an alliance that had a working autonomous. So we stuck with the near corner. It worked out best for us.

213 had 3 auto modes, straight forward dump, across field dump, and reverse defend. Our straight forward auto mode was extremely effective, delivering 9-10 balls every time. We used the across the field less, due to it being more vulnerable and problem prone, (it kept getting turned straight into the wall), but after tweaking it (it still had problems once in a while after this) made 8-10 balls across the field when it was set like that. We never used the third mode. I thought it was pretty cool that our programming team was able to utilize our holonomic drive and make it cross the field and successfully dump at all.
We had the code to go dump into the far corner goal
Team 95 had code for it (in case we weren't in the near-goal position and there was a possibility that our 3 point shot routine would interfere with an alliance mate) but never tried it in competition. Indeed, we had about 15 autonomous modes, only three of which we used in competition (all variants of the "center goal shoot").

How about some of the defensive auton modes? I watched Foley Freeze, Team 910 come out and do a "fish hook" maneuver on us. They went across the field toward the corner goal and turned sharply right into us. Pretty neat defensive move.

135 and 1018 wern't the perfect auto-shooters at Buckeye, but the way they had played I knew they would eventually be able to tweak and fix their systems.

1834 was a very consistent blocker in auto, and they were strong enough to push most robots.

At the Davis Regional, Team 955 did a great job with their low goal scoring in the autonomous phase. They would consistantly score 9-10 balls at a time, which was very surprising considering the amount of defensive bots at the competition. Also, they did a great job overall, especially in the final matches of the regoinal. They put up a great opposition.

395 consistently made 10 points in the lower goal at Pittsburgh. They have a great reliable bot.
175 (Buzz) had a great auto-mode at chesapeake. They were able to shoot or hit the corner goals. 393 also could hit 10 for 10 in the corner goals at pittsburg. My team (1629) has over 100 auto-modes (if u want to find out how visit www.team1629.com and click on the auto switch tab on the page). We can hit 10/10 dumping or 5/7 shooting (as long as we dont get hit and then we only shoot 4 and make about 3). We also have some tricks up our sleves to make us very unpredictable in auto-mode  .

teams 703 and 469 ( both being in the finals with us at the detroit regional) had great autonomous routines, although 703 got some bad luck in final round 1. Team 818 had a great autonomous at the detroit regional but because of programming errors and more prepared opponents, our autonomous was not that good in Palmetto. The one thing we were bummed about was that when our team was on Live with Lucas the field and Lights were not on, but were turned on for the other teams.
Good Luck!

I would have to say(sorry about the partiality) that in the playoffs at Finger Lakes the best auto mode would have to be...229 going out and setting the pick for 1126 consistantly with us making 8-10. Unless of course we had a crimp undone :yikes:

At New Jersey, the obvious pick was 25. It was an early regional and most teams hadn't figured out the bugs in the camera code yet, but they were right on.
At Palmetto, the big names were 95, SPAM (no longer know their number...), and 16. (Although, I'm sure I've forgotten many.)
On the other hand, there are countless excellent defenders who win autonomous by robbing other teams of points or defending their own scorers (1251 comes to mind) and don't get the credit.

My alliance was against you for that one. I was a driver and my team was right under the goal. Let's just say it wasn't easy to endure :(
nice job on getting picked by them :D
P.S. we lost to wildstang in the first round in chicago too, it's like they're out to get us...

Buzz (175) could hit the high goal or dump very well in autonomous. 1038 impressed me at Pittsburgh with their shooting autonomous. 393 was a very consistent auto dumper.
118 the Robonauts could hit 10/10 easily,
when pushed moderately in auto mode they could still get 8/10,
when hit by 418 in the last finals match, spinning around 180 degrees, the could not find the goal ! What a crazy turn of events in the final round of Lone Star! Worst ending ever !
Question:
Has anyone seen any robots that have autonomous code to recover from a defensive autonomous move?
Also, on the topic of autonomous, don't forget to vote on / post on my thread "What does your camera do?"
Can't wait to see what happens with autonomous in Atlanta...
Well, at great lakes our autonomous mode was sweet. It showed everyone in the audiance how fast our Twister (commonly known as holonomic) Drive can spin. We didnt have the camera working for a while, so we just set it to spin cycle pretty much.
Now though, We aim for the center goal, and if a robot hits us so we can't make it in time, the robot tries to correct and wont shoot until its sure it will make them.
Question:
Has anyone seen any robots that have autonomous code to recover from a defensive autonomous move?
I've seen several bots (including 95's) that had a "delay" mode, so that if it looked like the other team was going to try and collide with you, you'd wait a few seconds to let them pass.
This worked very well for us in one match at BAE (although that was also a match where the 8.2V bug sidelined us the rest of the match)

And yes, Bomb squad had an awesome autonomous, SPAM had a good shooter in autonomous, and 1251 was amazing by dumping ~+10 balls in autonomous. 25 deffinatly has one of the best, and from what i hear the triplets.

At IRI, 25, 1114, and 33 were able to score 24 balls in the center goal in autonomous mode for 72 points + the 10 bonus points for a total of 82 points. :ahh:

Yep. So many times (especially at NJ when they were still working out bugs in the scoring system) we'd score 9/10 or 10/10 in autonomous, and then the match would be reset.

25 was very strong in auto. They were undefendable unless you were 910. 40 was cool with their ability to set their auto from the drivers station. 1272's ability to make auto modes was really cool. Finally Pink and the Thunderchickens had sweet automodes.
