A member of our team has created a really great flash animation/game based on the 2006 Aim High competition. It allows for a 1 on 1 competition using the theory of the 2006 with a basic, all-function robot. Just looking for people's reactions to this game. Thanks.

The idea is cool, but the robots are really hard to control if they get stuck. Much harder than our robot was this year. (Can't speak for other robots)

I have to get used to the controls, but this seems like another method of procrastination I can add to my list. Its pretty neat.
Totaly sweet. That is one addicting game. Great job. I'll tell my team about this game and maybe we might even make a REGIONAL out of it. Again thanks for the game and keep up the good work.

Heres a hint: You can only hold 25 balls at once, and when you "puke" them out the bottom, all 25 end up in the same spot and can be picked up in one gulp.

Hmmm... methinks a nice little randomization factor into your physics engine would work nicely. (Unless there isn't one and it's just a scripted event)

wow, i didnt know it would get that much attention!
Heres what im currently working on, for those of you who are interested:
-randomize who starts first, blue has unfair advantage
-physics of ball interactions, they cant occupy the same space
-allow bots to push
-allow selection of bot you want (out of three options probably, a low pusher, low goal only, 40 ball capaxity, one like the current one, shoots and drives slower, and a 15 ball capacity shooter only)
-you can only suck balls in through the roller at the front
-making it more friendly
-not getting stuck
if you have any suggestions, please post them, like you have been doing. its spring break for me this week so if i dont get this perfect by the end of the week, ill never finish. And maybe some day ill make one for the the 2005 challenge, i think tat would be easier (keeping track of 40 balls holy moley!)
and one last thing, there is a slight easter egg in the game, sort of. if you can find whats weird about the first human players and post it, you will receive a special award*
PS: my top score is 181
because there is no autonomous and blue always goes fisrt, i think they are getting an unfair advantage, so that gonna be the first thing i change. and if anyone suggests i make it so you program your won autonomous i'll slap you. no joke.

Im now at 180 but still not top score darn ;) And about the human player when u unload balls on the one side of the field some times balls are throw back from the other.

Very impressive work. Lots of fun to play. It'd be awesome if you could add networking to play against other people with. Also I had a tough time telling when I was scoring and when I was not, maybe an indicator for being lined up?
High score was 177. :p
Very cool and Highly Addicting so far I've only gotten 142 but I'm still trying.

ya, they do score sometimes, but it veries. I made it so that on the second, and halfway through the second, it checks to see if the human players have any balls, if they do they throw it from one of 25 spots randomly, at 1 of 5 or 6 velocities. Its cool when they get it in your robot or the goal, because its almost like it was designed to be a smart AI. :cool:
of course, you could make it so it always aims at you or the goal perfectly, but theres no fun in that. i tried to make it about as acurate as our human players were ;-)

Alright, i updated it, and it should be uploaded too. the changes include:
-SOUND EFFECTS - i have a good whistle, but the charge noise is bad. if anyone knows where i can get a better one id love to have that info
-also, somthing im excited about, random side selection at the beginning of the match. you never know who will go first!
more to come later, someone is working up a formula for me for ball-ball interactions. enjoy!

I don't know if it's just me...but when the red side is supposed to score first when it comes for period change the blue goal doesn't go on..the whistle goes on, but if you score in it it doesn't count.

ya i noticed the bog too and fixed it. i gave the updated version to tfisher, and he should upload it soon, but the newest version is also at http://www.geocities.com/gogogadgetmiester/
i copy/pasted somthing and forgot to change around the modifiers, so it turns out you could score on whichever goal was on first the whole time. so it should be up on team422.com soon so use that instead of the geocities one if you can.

Other suggestions: Speed up the rate of fire slightly (most decent shooters out there can do better than one shot per second) and give robot options.
Oh, and could you add a "play again" button?

still some bugs like not being able to turn if you go straight against a wall and the barriers from the ramp seem to stick out to far or the bots area is to wide???

and i call BS on anyone that says over 200 w/o screen shot proof thats not photoshopped cause i had 2 sets of 25 + ramp lol if you can pick up more than that then you are using both bots or having someone use bot 2 to pick up and dump to you... CHEATERS! =P

HUGE!!! HUGE!!! need for the game... move the scores to INSIDE the Starting boxes... if they are on the ramp they are EASILY hidden while trying to fit 2 bots on the ramp =( and i think i just got a 241 but cant tell =( lol!!!
using both bots a score of 222... yay for late night gaming =D i will break 230 by tommorow and i have SS's =P
and darn those HP's are good 7 pts!!!

ok, im gonan try and tackle this one at a time. I worked on it for just a bit longer last night before my parents made me stop and get some sleep, but im planning on doing alot more today. keep in mind, at the start of yesterdays programing session, there werent even any balls yet, so i think i can do alot to day if i try.
OK, first thing - auton is randomized in the latest version. i dont think its online yet, but it is randomized now. there are also sounds, because i know its hard to see the lights in the green box.
next - getting stuck - what you need to keep in mind, is that the computer right now thinks two things are touching if their object boxes are touching. this means that when your robot is rotated, you need to imagine that the robot is inscribed in a rectangle that is paralell to al the sides of your screen. that is why two bots at 45 degree angles can run into stuff they arent even near. i tried somthing to fix that yesterday, but it didnt really work.
pushing - i did make a version where you can push, but calculating in the force of two robots on their direction and stuff is way to physicsy for me. i tried, but it ended up so that you can push other robots off the field, then they get stuck putside and cant come back in. very annoying. that why i want to amke seperate robot classes, because if i only have to caclulate one of the robots haivng enough force to push, then it will be easy and doable.
i had actually slowed down the rate of fire a bit. i wanted to try and make the dumping function not as obsolete compared to a shooting function that has 5 really good sweet spots, at least. eventually there will be a fast shooter with a small hopper, and a dumoing only robot who can push other non-dumping bots with a large hopper, and this wll be the imbetween bot. i need to make dumping more realistically attemptable.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT A PLAY AGAIN BUTTON:
i tried and because i started thinking i would fail, everything, including the initial ariable declarations etc, is in scene 1 frame 1, so basically, if you are on internet explorer your replay button is f5, if you are on firefox, it is ctr + r
Moving the game info to your starting screen is somthing i had been thinking about since i first shoose its placement. i would like to ask though, why two bots are on the ramp? ya, i could moce the info, or i could put it both places. id like to hear at least 5 people say they want it moved or both places before i change somthing around like that.
and i dont think an AI is anywhere in the mix right now. in fact, of all the possible inproovements i will make to the game, an AI is just not going to happen. that would be the hardest thing ever and i just dont think its worth pulling my hair out for
finally, i would like to mention that sometime before noon, hopefully, but at least sometime today i will try and release the new physicsed version. last night i was trying to work out physics equations, but gave up, and made a stupid version of physics, but it looks better than i thought it would. however it made the game start to go extremely slow, so i would like to try and fix that before i release it. if you want it out though, just ask and i'll try and get it there.

because for pure trying to break the high score you need to use both bots and put them both on the ramp end of story... thats a lot of ramp room and usually you arent looking WHERE the bots end up on the ramp but just getting them on the ramp... and by doing so can easily block your score... =(...

ok everyone, you can thank a cold day in florida keeping me out of the pool on my third day of spring break, so instead i worked on the game again. i dont think it is updated on the team422 website yet, but it can be found on

there are now 3 bot choices at the beginning!
-lowbot - can only score on the low goals, holds 40 (there are only 40 in the game), and CAN PUSH!!! there are still glitches in the pushing stuff, like getting a bot pinned sideways against the wall getting it stuck forever etc, but at least you can push
-midbot - this is the classic bot, only now it can only hold 20, not 25
-highbot - can shoot three times as fast as the midbot, but can only hold 10 balls at a time.
so there are still glitches, and i think im going to make the lowbot not be able to move fast.
actually, what i might try is to make the lowbot the best pusher, follwed by the midbot, then the highbot, but the mighbot is fasted (3 speeds) followed by midbot(2) then lowbot. i think that will make things more fair. if you have serious problems with this (besides that the lowbot is still seriously advantaged, it cannot loose unless it plays itself) go cry me a river. or make a suggestion.
i understand most of you are at school right now, so maybe slots 2, 3, 4, and 5 on the petition will be filled soon. not at the top of my priority lsit right now though.
one last thing, i took away the physics of the balls. it can still be found on the above site /aimhigh2.html but it was slowing down the game way to much. adding the multiple bots and pushing and stuff increased my code by like 60%, so i dont think i can add to much stuff that it has to check through 12 times a second before it will get extremely slow again.

i LOVE the changes... espically the new bot types!!! its amazing... pushing works great from what i've seen!!! um... love the faster shooter =D... still can get stuck against wals =( but other than that a HUGE improvement in my opinon... *and getting a 220 score first time doesnt go against it either =D\

ya, ive been playing it some and noticed that even if the low bot just pins the other bots during their shooting times, he can only get but like 20 in during his times cause hes so slow. i can try and make it faster. the getting stuck against the wall stuff is never gonna be fixed, though, the lowbot doesnt get stuck, if you go full speed and turn so that his indent is against the wall, he comes unstuck most of the time. also, the lowbot can push the other bots into unforgiveable positions on the edge.
do you think it would be a good idea to have an emergency button for both bots, that turns them 90 degrees, so they can get unstuck? thoughts please. keep in mind that this is supposed to replicate the real game, and robots did get stuck on things, eachother, or worse, tipped.

That may be a good idea, but then again it does simulate real life so i dont know. I do know though that is gets anoying when u get stuck at the begining of the match not being able to move around, so i would say yes to putting that function in.
I just did something crazy. I was driving around as blue and drove right ontop of red. What ever way i tried to drive with blue red drove. Finally after 30 seconds i hit the wall and it came off. It was very strange though when it happened.

about the platform thing, its is based on you touching the colored part of the platform, not being off the carpet. sorry, but thats easier
i just finished a version that should make you not get on top of other bots, the issue was i had no safeguards for turning into bots if you can push them, once you are on them, the objects touch, so the pushing equation of the robot being pushed going the same direction and speed makes it stay underneath till you scrape it off.
and i have to address somthing i said earlier. i lied to you all. i am sorry. i actually AM going to ATTEMPT an autonomous program. dont get your hopes up, but that might consume my day tomorrow
i think that the e-rotate thing would be great.

sorry heretic, but i just changed it. i made the speeds a function for your robot. the lowbot is quite slow now, because he has the power to push, i think that makes it more fair. midbot was slowed a bit, just because hes average all around. the highbot was left alone, but now seems fast comparitively.
the 422 on the lowbot, heh, how do i put this...
our teams robot did basically what that lowbot does. it moved at a less than average 6fps, it pushed around everybody, and i mean EVERYBODY, and it reliably picked up and dumped a bunch of balls each game. in fact, thats why we did so well at the palmetto regional.
you may also notice, that when you select your bots for a repeat match, your hopper contains 422 balls! thats incredible!

oh, and dont expect another update past this tonight, if i do work on it anymore, i prolly wont update it. im running out of possible improovements. im still ify about the emergency key, but im think on moving score so that its also on the starting spots, but leaving it on the platform as well. besides people getting stuck, if there are any more suggestions for improvements, give them now, either on the forum or a pm, so i can do it while im still in the zone/on spring break

sorry i lied. i didnt realizze it would take a mere 5 minutes to update the sounds (props to the guy who sent me the official sounds) and make the midbot be able to push the shooter. not a major update though. the above still stands however, please send me input!

making an intelligent AI? i cant do that. what everyone here faild to understand, is that i do not know flash. this is only the 4th thing ive ever made in flash.

i have no idea what im doing when im making this. i only know a few flash commands, and cannot do the powerful program justice. i am surprised that the game is as impresive as everyone tells me, but am fristrated because i know that if someone who actually knew flash was doing this they would be able to get so much more out of this program.

Just scored a 201. Man, that highbot is something!
(Here's a tip: Get a hopperful, then shoot all ten so they land in a spot where you can shoot for the goal from. Park over those balls with a full hopper, and you'll effectively have twice the hopper you should have.)

hey, for those of you who haeve played the newest version with variable speeds, im really thinking of geting the lowbot up to the same speed as the midbot, and keeping the highbot that fast. thought? i just think that the lowbot is moving unfairy slow right now. i decreased his speed cause he can push EVERYONE but ya, i think its too slow

finally someone noticed. yes, i was messing with the counter mechonizm and i noticed that too. the problem is displaying it. it still counts it, but it stops updating points 1 frame too soon. i fixed that this morning, but the person who keeps the team website is at the beach so i was unable to upload the new version. sorry if it causes any confusion, but the lights at the top should still signify the winner even if the points dont
PS: i think that owuld be a funny screenshot, the end of the game, red is up by 9, but blue wins!

I just got a 301!!!...except without the points added on at the end for the ramp you have no way of knowing that...also are you counting your high scores in just one side or combining both sides? Because I've been utilizing both sides of the field to score with.

I'm not a huge fan of the multiple speeds. I think you push forward and you go forward at full speed would be better.
Now. How many points can people get without the use AT ALL of the opposite robot. You cannot touch the controls for that robot.
My highscore for 1 robot is 184.

just a thought but there is no item to change the speeds of the bots. like if the blue lowbot is pushing and the red highbot pushes then other way the blue bot should slow.

yes i take out the return in it...
and the low bot is WAY to slow now =( *got slow bot auto to run yay but still no shoot on high bot...
and you dont have the winner of auto starting on defense =X
*getting it to shoot now... but Auto seems to end at 123!!!! not 120 =( and i only get into position for low goal by 125 and only get 5/10 balls out on the low bot =/
BUG - blue midbot can not shoot out balls from bottom... *EDIT* mid can only shoot out what it picks up not in auto =( thats sad =(

oh yeah winner goes on DEFENSE! hah. i had it set on offense. i can look into that bug about not using balls collected in auto, theres a good chance i know what i did wrong with that one...
and also if red is unloading on bottom blue cant unload till reds done I HAVE NO IDEA WHY
i dont know whats goin on with the ending at 123 thing sorry, i have gotten all my balls in with the high bot when i use the code above. dunno what to say, sorry :-(

i started making one for the triple play game, and gave up 6 minutes later
so ill see what i can do about those bugs. i knew the autonomous would have a plethora of bugs, so ya, ill see what i can do. check back tomorrow, should be fun.
***ya ok, so where i thought i might find the problem, there was none. i cannot explain whats going on, so ure gonna hafta deal with it. there is a no autonomous option if you ignore the code input area and just press start, it will start at 120 like it used to. sorry i couldnt get it to work better
and by the way, theres always been stupid stuff wrong, for the first few version, there was no ball#1. there were only 39. i couldnt get ball1 to exist, then in later versions it started showing up! who know when autonomous will just start working (sounds like the real competition ;-)
******im trying not to post too many times, so im just editing. i made an update. in autonomous you automatically go your max speed. this means everyone needs to rewrite their codes (sorry)
but what i can tell you it, you dont need to change your lowbot code, for your midbot code you need to take out half of your f, and b, because its moving twice as fast, and for your highbot code, take out 2/3 of your f, and b, because its moving thrice as fast. sorry for the incomveniance, but it had to be done.

new subject, new post
i have compiled 3 seperate presents or everyone.
first, is the shareware version of the online game. its a zip file with instructions and an an html and a folder of suporting files. you can distribute it and upload it as much as you want, as long as credit is given where credit is due, and you do not alter the files.
second is a windows exe of the game. everyone loves free, fun downloadable games, so here it is. same rules aply to this, you can distribute it to anyone you want as long as its for free and props are given whree props is due
third is a mac version (yes a mac version, you heard me correctly) of the game. same rules apply as above.
i will atach the version 12 of these to this post, but these and all updated verson will be available off of the mechtechs website, which hopefully you know the URL of by now. but just in case...

MAJOR MAJOR UPDATE
first off, the lowbots speed has been increased to that of the midbot. i thought it was necesary
secondly, due so some complaints, i have simplified autonomous coding by alot. now, you type the function you want performed (f,b,r,l,d,s,p) follwed by the number of frames to perform it. MAX OF 9 if it is a two digits number, then it will screw everything up. so the old versoin of f,f,f,f,f,f,f,f,f is replaced with f9.
if you shoot or dump, just use 1 so you dont do weird things.
for shooting on the midbot, because he can only shoot once per second, use the pause, so his command becomes s1p9p2 for a shoot, and copy/paste 10 times and he will try and shoot all 10.
for shooting on the highbot, he can do it thrice a second so use s1p3 copy/pasted a bunch
raming in autonomous is cool, and the low/midbots can get to and ram the highbot before he is done shooting, so thats good.
hopefully it will be available on the team422 site soon, but until then it can be found on

My current high score is 224, and that's including a 40-point play (and the blue robot remaining a paperweight).

i finally fixed a bug thats been bugging me since the start. if you go to dump at the same time, it wont let you. turns out a break statement was owning us all. i fixed it, and in the process found that there was a bug inthe auronomous shooting (they both took balls out of the blue hopper, but recorded that they didnt)
so thats all fixed and on the geocities, hopefully it will be on team422.com soon. remeber, you can download the shareware version, give it to your team website guy and he can host it on your website if you want. there is also the exe and mac version available for download and offline play. they arent the most updated version though. they will be soon though i assure you
till then enjoy the less buggy program

ive pretty much run out of things to improove, so im starting a list of good autonomouses, heres what ive got so far:
highbot:
-f9l3f9s - real simple, easy to remember
-f2l4f9f9f6r3s - awesome. you get them all in, and you shoot from behind the platform so you CANNOT get rammed
lowbot:
-f3l4f9f9f9d1p9p9p5b9d1b9b9r4f9f9 - if you have a copy/paste available this is where its at. you dump, come back, and position yourself for the start of the match. if you ad a final f to the end you will continue down and ram someone at the last second, after theyve gotten their balls off
-f9f9f9f9f9f9f2r4f - will let you run around behind the corner the highbot is hiding behind. you wont get there in time, but hey, yull be there
midbot:
-same as above for raming
-keep in mind typing f will be the simplest ramming
-f9f9f9f9f6b9l4f2s - a nice midbot one, will take out a simple highbo autonomous, then go back and put in like 5 or 6

that because, and i believe this is in the directions, d works just like the toggle dump/suck key q or u. when you end the autonomous without a number, it will execute that command once per frame till the end of autonomous. so 12 times a second you are toggling between dump and suck. this can be fixed by adding a 1 after the d. so if you end your code with d1, it will toggle once to go to shoot, then wait till the end of autonomous. or you can get more complex and type somthing alnong the lines of d1p9p9p9p9d1 and after dumping everything (keeping in mind the lowbot dumps twice as fast as the midbot)* you will begin sucking again so you are ready to go once autonomous is over

*note from above, i looked it up and the midbot dumps 3 balls a second, and the the lowbot dumps 6. 12 frames in a second so a full load for the lowbot would take 10/6 of a second, or 20/12 meaning p9p9p2. but also, it takes a few seconds for the ball to get out of sucking range, so give it a good p9p9p9 for the lowbot, and p9p9p9p9p9 for the midbot and i think you should be good.

I would like to say goodbye everyone. my spring break is about up, and im put of time to goof off and program. I have done more with this game than i originally imagined i could ever do. it still isnt perfect, i know that, but i am proud of it. but because i am leaving tomorrow, i will need any bug reports/suggestions before 3ish friday. this includes final pleas for the score on the mat, and anything you find wrong with the program.
If you visit the team 422 site, www.team422.com/aimhighonlinegame.html you will find that we have compiled for your pleasure, downloadable versions of the game. there is one for macs, and one for windows. there is also one folder that contains everything you need, as well as the instructions, to put the game online yourself, on your teams site.

well using just 1 bot and shotting on both goals i got a 333... shooting on just 1 goal i still got 259 just using one goal...
