View Full Version : Displaying cosmetic threads in an isometric view on a drawing?

Does anyone know how to do this?
I know when it's in one of the standard 6 views (front, top, etc..) the thread diameter shows up as a dotted line, but when I pop in an isometric view of my parts, the outside threads I created with the hole wizard, or just as a cosmetic thread, doesn't show as something that looks like a thread, but as a smooth feature.
Is there a way to turn that on???
I know in the models we just stick on a texture of a thread, but it doesn't carry over to the drawing for some reason???
HELP!! I don't want to put drawings to the production floor and have them miss the thread callout in the standard views, and not see the thread on the isometric view, and make a smooth chamfered feature.
That would be bad. Very bad. lol

I haven't figured that one out either. One of the (I believe many) ways Inventor tops SolidWorks.

If you click on the isometric view in the drawing that is lacking the cosmetic threads, and then click on the "shaped with edges" icon in the top right, it will show the cosmetic threads (as well as the fully shaded model, etc).
I do not believe you can make them appear in the "hidden lines removed" view that is default (and what I assume you have currently selected)
I have to disagree with you here Dave... I have moved over to the SW crowd after having used both for quite some time. I learned Inventor first, and was fairly proficient. I went through the SW tutorials one night for my class, and was easily able to create parts and drawings in SW in what seemed like half the time as with Inventor. This was after working with Inventor for nearly 4 years, and having used SW for only a matter of hours. Granted, the programs are similar, I find myself with alot more free time now that I do everything in SW. Just my opinion though...

Travis, thanks for the tip. I am showing it as hidden lines removed, and will try your suggestion tomorrow at work when I get there.
Also, I forgot one more question. Do you know an easy (and least graphic intensive) way to show a diamond, or straight knurl on a cylindrical part?
To tell you the truth, I have not really looked into as of yet, but I know I'll need it eventually to show parts accurately.
Thanks in advance!

Draw your knurled texture in a graphics program, or find a suitable image. (Note that I don't have the program on this computer, so I can't verify this.)

Appearance - texture - metal - machine - knurl or one of many other default textures.

Okay Travis, you are starting to win me over on this SolidWorks thing.
/me needs to come up with a few bucks to get his hands on a copy so he can do a project side by side in both programs and compare

Uh.. for models, or for drawings? lol
I want it to show up in both, the model I can care less, that's just some visual icing on the cake, but I need it to show up in the slddrw file. (drawing views).
I'm guessing to use the same procedure as above with the cosmetic threads to make it show up?

Strange, I guess you cannot add that in the drawing view. I guess a work around is to take a screenshot and insert that into the drawing.
I'll look into it.

I know there is a way to change a view in a .slddrw to a shaded view. I think you would have to do that, but I've never tried it. I use real threads on my parts :]

ok about decals. i know that they dont normally come up in rendered images. do you think that if you apply the same strategy as you would to the threads, they would come up?
