View Full Version : Cart Party!
That's right, cart party! (robot cart that is)
All teams with a sound system on their cart are invited to bring their cart to the area between the Georgia Dome and Georgia World Congress Center on Friday after the competition for music based fun! I will be bringing my iPod with FM transmitter to supply the tunes. This way, everyones cart will be perfectly synced, creating the most awesome surround-sound stereo ever! :yikes: If there are any songs you would like me to play, PM me with the title and artist. I haven't run this by the rest of 1549 yet, so our cart may not be there.
Of course, anyone who just wants to come and enjoy the music is welcome too!
Hope to see you then!

assuming your cart has a radio on it of course.
I have made like 4 carts with stereos, none of which had a radio.

Most stereos have an attachment for a radio antenna, and since the source of the signal will be less than 50 feet away, I don't think that not having an antenna will be a problem.
I am assuming that the car stereos people put in their carts have a built-in radio, just no antenna.

sounds like a good idea, we used to have a radio/cd player in our cart but i dont know if it was still there when we shipped it.

u need an antenna on a head unit if you want to pick up any signal

Do radios come with head units? If they do, you would just need to hook up a small antenna, since the source won't be very far away.

a car stereo is usually referred to as a head unit. in order to pickup any radio signals you will have to hook up some sort of antenna to the head unit. another thing to take into consideration is the fact that those iPod FM transmitters weren't designed to broadcast very far. you might have a bit of a garbled signal between the iPod and the receiving head units.

I have actually had success with the transmitter being about 20 feet behind my dad's old escort wagon.
BTW, attached is a list of songs I will be putting on the playlist for this event (if it works/happens). Any sugestions are welcome.
Ok, update time.
I told our coach about my idea and she thought it sounded cool, so our cart might be there. I also e-mailed our resident radio expert, and I will edit this post with whether or not he thinks it will work as soon as I hear back from him. Any more playlist requests need to be made before April 26, because that's when 1549 leaves for ATL. Hope to see you there.

EDIT: Ok, a couple of things have come up. First, our "resident radio expert"'s e-mail appears to be invalid.
Second, I do not have the track "who let the dogs out"; I was planning to pick it up at Best buy, but it seems they don't have it. If someone who does have it would attach it to an e-mail and send it to me at dylan.stoll@gmail.com it would be greatly appreciated.

Somewhere i have a 500mw FM transmitter i built out of a kit. If yall are interested i can bring it to let whoever is coordinating this use. It has MUCH better range than one of those ipod FM things.

That sounds cool. What does it use to connect to the recording it broadcasts?
And I am coordinating this event (or at least trying to  )

I'll have to run it by our coach to see if its ok, so if it is, count 1251 in, the monster cart wants to get a workout.

See i was smart when i made the radio for my teams cart. I took a small broken guitar amplifier, pulled the header out of it, and replaced the header with a car radio, and a 40 watt booster. I don't know if were bringing it to Atlanta though, I'll have to see if i can take it as a carry on.

Saw your cart pic and WOW , I hope you can come. Too bad 548 won't be there, their cart was sweet! :D
BTW, I noticed you guys are from Florida, you wouldn't happen to have any spare coconuts from Team 1341, would you? Here's the my CD Swap listing for them. http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/parts.php?action=itemdetail&itemid=10282
I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but you may want to take note of section 7.7.6 of the manual, which states, "Please do not add music to your cart." I think this rule is new for this year. It's a bit disappointing to me, too, because I really liked having music on our cart to keep us upbeat on the loooong walk to the Dome last year.

It's been on for at least two years; as long as you keep it down (waaayy down for some of you) most people let it slide--but I wouldn't have music on a cart anyway. If you get more than one or two warnings, you will be turned off.

thats so you dont go blasting it in the pits/arena, but if it was outside in the open im sure it will be fine.

That's exactly why I suggested the area between the buildings.
That way, It's really not any different than a party in the parking lot with the stereos on people's cars.
Ok, here's the planned play list so far, with the songs in the order they will be played. As always, suggestions by post, PM or e-mail are welcome.

If i remember correctly it has standard RCA inputs. I will have to dig up the antenna.
Ok everyone, I just heard back from our radio expert and he says it will not work without an antenna. However, he also says it can be just any random piece of wire, so long as you connect one end to the antenna terminal, and the other to ground. He also sent me some equations to calculate what I think is wavelength. I don't really understand what they mean, but I will ask him.
Here's what he sent me if anyone knows what it means:
three element directional beam:
Driven: 468/freq. in MHz
Director: driven x 0.95
Reflector: driven X 1.05
random wire 1/2 wave: 468/freq. in MHz
random wire full wave: 1005/freq. in MHz
Please note it is best to use the center of the band as the frequency
in the math above. For your application it is 98MHz.
See you later!

So nats is coming down upon us soon, I would like specifics about the cart party please, exact location, time, and hopefully what teams will be attending, if the turnout is good, a little friendly cart competition may be in order, lol :D
I e-mailed our radio expert the numbers you get from the equations and he says: The numbers you get represent the length of the wire in feet.
There is an alternative if no one wants to mess with the radio stuff: If everyone has RCA input cables (you know, with headphone jack plugs on the end) on their stereo's, and everyone brings a splitter with their cart, I can just plug everything directly into my ipod.
Let me know which you would prefer.

Time: I'm thinking about 6:30pm on Friday, Later if the matches run long
Location: Between the Georgia Dome and GWCC buildings, I will need a map or pics of that area to be more specific.
Teams: so far the teams that have indicated interest are 1251, 527, and of course, our team.
I will see if I can pick up a powered splitter if everyone wants to do it that way, or if someone has one they can bring that would be great too.

great idea, but only problem is that that would drastically reduce volume and quality, unless a powered splitter is used, it can be purchased at radioshack for about $12 and splits into 3 jacks and keeps volume at a normal quality and level due to the fact that it increases the output power with 2 AA batteries
and of course, our team
Scratch that. Unless our cart fits on the bus that we and two other teams are taking to ATL, we will not be taking it :( .
If there are any more requests for the playlist, or teams who are interested in bringing their cart, please post or PM or e-mail me by 5:00 Tuesday the 25th (tomorrow).
Hope to see you all there.

Final Update.
Our cart will most likely not be going. However, team 1251 (The Tech Tigers) will be bringing their cart (http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/23550).
Any other teams are welcome to attend, or bring their cart. I will be bringing a radio transmitter and a splitter, for two possible ways of syncing the cart(s).
Also, here is the final playlist.
Hope to see you all there.

So for all of you that weren't in the clearing between the congress center and Georgia Dome after fridays matches, the cart party was amazing, our team dancing on the cart with a nice little surrounding of other dancers, 1251 would like to thanks all the teams there to show their spririt and mad dancing skillz at the first annual 1251 cart party.
We'd also like to extend a special thank-you to teams 247 and 11 for bringing their cart, next year however, we shall have a way of syncing them so they're all playing at once, then it will really be a cart party.
and only 1 thing can happen between now and next year, and that is making the event bigger and more well known. All those who care to help pm me!

Yea it was a lot of fun.
Too bad Dylan wasn't there to transmit to the other carts that showed up. I was surprised he organized the whole thing and wasn't there. Anyways thanks to team 11 and 247 for bringing their carts and their dancing skills. hopefully next year we can get them all to play the same thing.
Thanks everyone for all the fun.

I'm glad everyone had fun, but when did this happen? After talking with my teammates, I realized that if we tried to have the party after the last match the pits would close while we were outside and we would not be able to get back in. After this, I tried to find as many teams with sound systems on their carts as I could and invited them to the party for 4:30. I also told 1251 about the change in schedule. However, when 4:30 came and I went out to the courtyard no one was there. After 10 minutes I went to their pit and was informed that they were not yet back from their last match, and I asked to be told when they were. Well, no one ever told me when they got back, and when I went back to their pit the team was gone, and the cart was there without the sound system (removed for safe storage, I'm guessing). Did you work something out with the pit administration to let you back in and then have it after the matches?
Please let me know, so that I can do a better job of planning it for next year, if our team makes it to nationals.
-Dylan
BTW, next year our cart will be there, bigger and badder than ever before.

Ya we had a late last match, we got back at around 5-ish if i remember, i do not know who was asked to contact you when we got back, but we were never informed that you were at our pits, when you came back to find the pit team-less and cart-less, we were at the cart party. Also the pits didnt close till 7 (at least thats what I thought) so we had no trouble re-entering. Well next year if we both make it back to nats, im sure it will be better organized, cant wait till nats '07
