when you wonder if it would be possible to, using only first approved components, build a working version of wall-e...

that'd be fun...

or when you try to build a hud display that works like ironman's visor...
i think all you'd need is a couple of web cams, and a set of ipod video goggles, but i don't code, other than html, and i don't think i'd be able to write the software to control the goggles...

and when you're surprised that the posing in this thread is slowing down after 1250 posts!!!!!

come on, we have to hit 2000, at least

~You knew what NEMO was before you opened the PDF, and you're not a mentor
~When you go through this (http://www.firstnemo.org/PDF/first_competition_tips.pdf) and do the following:

(quotes from http://www.firstnemo.org/PDF/first_competition_tips.pdf ....)

"Color Coordinate your tools for easy access in the pits, say I need a 10/24 screw, where is it--oh, it's blue"
~Your team actually DOES do this (and oh my god, that makes things SO much easier)

"Batteries don't help you if they're lying on the field"
~If I remember correctly, our backup battery fell off once during a match. That, and 3 of our 4 bumpers (though it's getting hard to remember what fell off when...those matches were PRETTY intense :D )

"Never forget your safety glasses"
~Yes, that's why I always have them in my purse, robotics season or not-robotics season (is there such a thing!? :ahh: )

"Always keep track of your stuff"
~Mr. Leslie needs to read this (he lost his car keys in Pittsburgh, so he left his car there, carpooled with someone during the 6 hour drive back home, slept, grabbed another set of keys and another person to drive him back out there, retrieved his car, and drove back home. We have students keeping track of his keys for him now.)

"Designate a few team members to be 'team spokespeople' in the pit, and make sure they are always there to be spoken to"
~This is a team joke...

"There is no cure or treatment for addiction to FIRST"
~Oh dear...

--When you're at Pep Boys for something unrelated to robotics and are sure you see a CIM motor, large size, in its original state.

--When you get a job at a go kart track and start trying to figure out:
Can your driver control the robot on this track (there are 6 tracks)?
Can the overpass be hurdled over?
If not, how can it be, without landing in the channel on the other side of the fence?
How do you control the robot where you can't see it?
Can it beat the karts we've got on the track?
Will the robot spin out (slick track)?
How good would our driver be (bumper cars, tank-drive steering)?--When you think that they've got it wrong on the track when one of the three main tracks starts with a right turn and ends with a right turn (and it's drive straight into both of them...)

--At said go kart track, there is no bumping on most of the tracks...so you think of it as "hurdler interference" instead of "bump to pass".

...You include "Wrap the freshman in tin foil" as an idea for the robot.
...You design a team logo, and than design that one team's logo, and than that other team's logo - all because its fun.

When you involuntarily twitch upon hearing the "charge" noise.

When more of your music than not you first heard at a FIRST event.

When there is a power drill on your coffee table.

When you buy a laptop rather than a desktop entirely so you can take it to FIRST events.

No I know that there is a CD version, but I am actually programming a website like people use for Fantasy Football, or Baseball, Hockey, etc. but FIRST Robotics. Sorry to say I think this will be better than CD's version as it will run like other Fantasy leagues(I hope). It all started at robotics banquet touring Medtronics facility and then joking with some others about seeing a worker adjusting their lineup, then that went into having a Fantasy Robotics, which lead me(the main and only programmer currently then on the team) to want to program that, then this summer learned two/three new languages (not all for the FR but some yes) and am currently programming the site. This first year I will just have our team test it out along with some of my friends that are interested that aren't even in FIRST , fix stuff from what they think and open it to the FIRST community the next. I know you will have to wait but I want it to be in good working order.

VEX related technically but still...

when your parents think you're dating every guy in the robotics team
when you have to explain to all your non-robotics friends as to why you have a roll of duct-tape and zipties in your handbag
when it takes you five minutes to actually think of any non-robotics friends to justify the above
when your grandparents come to your house to visit and ask why you're at home
when your teachers have stopped asking why you werent in class
when you walk around the school quietly in a sleep-deprived state waiting for a class you can get away with skipping
when you sprint from one end of the school to the other (while recieving weird looks from everyone you pass) just to get that precious extra 2 minutes on the robot
when you and your team spend every lunchtime in the robotics room even when you have no robots to build
when your robotics mate's older sister (who happens to be your hero [other than Dean Kamen :L]) is standing right behind you and you dont even notice because of the heated discussion you're having with the mate on who's robot will be finished first
when you can write all this stuff even though you havent had your rookie FIRST competition yet
when you have heated debates over whether cardboard team signs in the VEX competitions have to be made of 'vex cardboard'
when you program your calculator so that you can make notes about robotics during math class (then i had to clear the memory for an exam and cant remember how i did it :()
when you complain that your internet cord doesnt stay in and all your friends immediately yell 'DUCT TAPE!'
when the one person who doesnt suggest duct tape starts explaining in great detail how you can fix it 'properly' and everyone stares at him like he's mad
when someone at an event hears you talking about Delphi and asks if you know who <insert screen name here> is.
when your immediate response to the above is 'well she IS my teammate. if you like i could recite you her weekly schedule'
when you've rebuilt your VEX robot so many times that you start informing everyone that when you finally get a FIRST number, your rebuild-count will be higher
when you walk into your class after lunch - late - wearing your safety glasses, because you forgot to trade them for your normal glasses, and have to run back to get them
when you dont care when everyone laughs at you for the above
when you log onto Chief Delphi in in the middle on the night and are disappointed to see the 'Nightly Backup' notice
when the seniors at your school go on study leave and you suddenly find yourself a loner because all your junior friends are non-robotics friends and refuse to hang out with you within a month of a VEX competition
when you dont care about the above and spend all lunch in the room anyway, fiddling with gear and tank-tracks
when you no longer laugh at the word 'joystick'
when doing a project on cults in english class, you seriously start to wonder if FIRST is a cult - then decide you wouldnt care even if it was
when you cant wait to get your team number so you can do the things that people posting here do
when the worst threat you can possibly make to someone is 'I wont give you the small allen key!!'
when you come up with detailed plan of how to survive six weeks at school so that you dont have to go home

[The great thing about liking someone in your robotics team is that they've already seen you at your worst, and you cant shock them with ANYTHING anymore :D]

Your computer has a countdown program telling you how many days, hours, minutes, and seconds until kick off and ship.

Your robotics friends constantly remind each other in the halls guess what XX days XX hours till ship!

You still arn't completely sure how many button you have becuase everytime you count them you find somemore

You sit in class reading wiring diagrams, and blueprints for silent reading. And your teachers don't ask anymore.

When you are called out of class the teachers just say, "Robotics?" And you nod.

You forgot about christmas and is more concerned about kickoff.

You have Chiefdelphi as your homepage.

2. You have more visits per day to CD than to either Myspace or I Can Has Cheezburger.
3. You get the music from the 'Life is full of firsts' video stuck in your head.
4. You open 3DS Max more times in one week than any computer/console game you own.
