We got one too! Sure it's a little smaller, but we chose to be be more tactical in our game.

What really amuses me about this one is that I didn't make a connection until seeing this but... My team is Team 87. There is an Aegis Equiped Destroyer, DDG 87. AND I work for the Lockheed Martin Division that provided the Aegis Combat System for DDG 87.

Spooky...

Spooky...So your Navy namesake is active, unlike 931 and 174. Cool!

I wonder how many active Navy ships carry FIRST team numbers?

The 40's Delphi teams were represented back in the day:

Here's a more modern ship with the 48 designation, the USS Yorktown:

Looks like there was an SS-237 named Trigger.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Trigger_(SS-237)

"USS Trigger (SS-237) was a Gato-class (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gato_class_submarine) submarine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submarine), the first ship of the United States Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy) to be named for the triggerfish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triggerfish), any of numerous deep-bodied fishes of warm seas having an anterior dorsal fin with two or three stout erectile spines."
Sweet.. a submarine.

Not so sweet..
http://www.csp.navy.mil/ww2boats/trigger.htm
89 Men were lost when it sunk and/or was attacked.

I'm supprised I didn't stumble across these articles before since I always randomly seek out things with the number 237 attached to them.

We have a ship too: http://www.navsource.org/archives/10/1016118802.jpg

Interesting that it was named "Saginaw" - after a city only 90 miles from home. http://www.navsource.org/archives/10/161188.htm

1114 was a pleasure boat taken over by the Navy to patrol the Texas coastline during World War I - ooooh lots of danger involved there. Soak in the sunshine and drink mint juleps all day. Sounds like something those Simbot mentors would do! ;)

Wow, this is sweet!

While looking for 174 on a boat, I found 174 in graffiti on a wall and I thought, "Alright! Thats my team getting the word out." But I found a boat.

I couldn't find one. Does this mean I'll fail at life in 2007? Depressing.Well, I looked but also couldn't find a Navy vessel sporting 461.

A by-product of the search was three pages of integral calculus (http://www.umich.edu/~chem461/Gaussian%20Integrals.pdf), seemingly unrelated to 461 except by the course number. The derivation shows why the transcendental number pi appears in the formula for the normal (Gaussian) probability density function commonly called the bell curve. So I guess 461 rings a bell ... :D

The SS-228 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Drum_(SS-228)) was an American submarine during World War II.

The USS Drum (SS-228):

Its one thing to joke about next years robot design, Its another to put up vessels, trains or other objects bearing your schools number and on top of it all you know the history behind not just a team number on the side of a ship or robot design.

Basically this is all fun and games for the sake of starting cool rumors but on the other hand what you are really doing is educating one another about history that just so happened to bear your team numbers - later on rep points shall be given and just so i don't forget to hand them out I will subscribe to this thread =)

Keep up the good work.

Oh man.. first a submarine, and then I finally find a ship!!!

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/03/USS_McFarland_(DD-237).jpg/300px-USS_McFarland_(DD-237).jpg

"USS McFarland (DD-237/AVD-14) was a Clemson-class (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clemson_class_destroyer) destroyer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destroyer) in the United States Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Navy) during World War II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_II). She was named for John McFarland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McFarland)."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_McFarland_(DD-237)

Creepy connection to CT as well.

John McFarland (1840 – ?) was a sailor in the United States Navy and a recipient of the Medal of Honor. McFarland entered the Navy at Boston, Massachusetts, 24 December 1861 as seaman on Ohio, later transferring to Hartford in the West Gulf Blockading Squadron.

Better hope for balls in next year's game too Andy, cause I think I spot a poof ball or some other kind, and a big fan behind it ready to blow it into orbit? LOL

That ball may rival the size of Epcot's Spaceship Earth.. I think we need bigger goals next year. (both on and off the field). :)

And, if it really was 45's boat, how come the ball is gray, and not a led lit up thing like your ball drop ball? :p

USS Bridget (Hull No. 1024) was an escort ship. Its been dismantled and sold for scrap!!! :ahh:

That's why we were thinking of something more like.... this:

:D

It's too bad that the 1,150hp engine might put us just a little over weight... but hey, that's what speed holes are for! :yikes:

Looks like '07 is going to be a pretty rough-n-tumble year... i wonder where the red, blue, and green lights come in to this

I gave some rep points out for those who were able to link their team numbers to a historical object but there are many people here who just posted "look heres an iteam with out team number on it". I will award rep points to those who can not only match their team numbers with todays Flying, Floating and Submerged fortresses but also identify what role they played for the US.

I would like to also say that Elgin and Hoffman I'd like to give rep do you guys buttttttt....... VBulletin says I need to spread the love around so I didn't forget you guys. =)
